Use of e collar for recall and dog reactivity
Hi everyone, I want to preface this by saying I am not looking to be lectured on the use of negative reinforcement with my dog. I am working with a reputable trainer using the prong collar and so far it has been the safest and most successful way to ease her leash reactivity. The trainer has suggested I give e-collar training a go so my dog (she’s a staffy mix) can be off leash. She is very drivey (will run off if she sees another dog and has chased a herd of cows before when off lead) hence now I can rarely let her off unless an enclosed space with 0 distractions! The trainer, who has just been fantastic so far at understanding my dogs needs and her breed, suggested we try e collar training. It will cost me 500 for an intensive training course, plus another 160 for the mini educator. I am aware this is a load of money (more than I spend on myself!!) and am trying to do diligent research before making the purchase. I’d love to hear your experience and how using the e collar changed things for you and your dog. Thank you! submitted by /u/Glittering_Sell_9484 to r/OpenDogTraining [link] [comments]

What’s the consensus on e collars?
I know a lot of people hate them- is there ever a situation in which they’ve worked for reactive dogs? Background: we have a 5 y/o shepherd mix who we rescued as a puppy. We have new baby and long story short she’s not adjusting well. She’s also generally reactive to everything (barriers, strangers, dogs). We started on meds about 2 months ago (no changes) and our vet recommended a training facility that does a day train program and uses e collars. I went in and they allowed me to feel it and it was similar to electrostim that you use on muscles. I left feeling okay about it and she’s scheduled to start next week but after reading more into e collars now I’m worried. Some people say it makes the reactivity/ aggression worse and obviously that’s the last thing I need submitted by /u/slgirlie11 to r/reactivedogs [link] [comments]

E Collar Tips- starting out
I struggle with brevity so please bear with me as I try to give all relevant info and not too much extraneous 😂 When I adopted my dog (now a 16 month old am staff mix) I was committed to only using R+ training methods. I do think we could eventually get really close to where I want to be with that, but after a lot of frustration and research I think that we can get there with a lot more ease for both of us, so I purchased both a herm sprenger prong collar and an e collar. Obviously not using them at the same time, and I’m very comfortable and confident in using the prong correctly but not so much the e collar. My family has always had impeccably trained hunting dogs that use e collars so I am very familiar with how to actually use it/the application, but I’ve only worked with dogs already used to it and have never trained one. I’m pretty confused on how/where to start with it, but here’s where we are at as an overview: My dog has basic obedience skills down. Sit, lay down, shake, wait and leave it are all very solid. She knows come, stay, place and drop it. They are less solid. The place one is not her fault- we took her “place” away because she kept trying to shred it and need to purchase a “place” mat she can’t dig a hole in lol. She also has a focus command where she’s supposed to make eye contact with you, she knows it but isn’t solid on it and that’s also mostly on the humans. At home she is 98% an angel. On walks, 98% angel. In new settings/public she just gets so excited that she can’t regulate herself and there’s nothing I or any high value reward can do to maintain her focusing on me for longer than half a second. She pulls so hard she chokes herself, she will not settle, she just explodes excitement. When it’s in public and around our friends who also have dogs/know how to behave, she will eventually settle because they ignore her. Her breed mix is mostly am staff and pit bull, so while she can be stubborn she is SUPER eager to learn and please and seems to value praise over food which is helpful usually, but hard in public because people are so annoying and everyone wants to pet the cutest puppy in the world, so she is constantly getting what she wants. Such an unfortunate catch 22 here lol, I need her to be chill around people but need to bring her around people to learn it. Knowing her personality and demeanor, I really doubt I will ever have to use the static mode on the collar but in adjusting the settings I found the lowest level where I could feel it on my palm and then went one level lower. My vision for using the collar to help kinda goes like this: we’re in public and she’s over the top excited. I command focus/sit/down/whatever- she doesn’t. I correct with the beep or vibrate (or static if we do need it), that pulls her attention enough to complete the command and mark with a reward. Repeat. Is this the right school of thought?? I also know I can’t teach her new things with the collar, or expect her to understand what it means right away. I’m most confused on the very first step of using it, which would be using it in the home. She’s mostly SO good here, so it’s hard to think of how to teach her that it’s a correction. My first thought would be to use it with her drop it, that’s her weakest command at home and she enjoys a game of keep away. So would a good starting point be to have the collar on and wait for her to grab something, give the drop it command and then use the collar if she doesn’t complete the behavior? I don’t know if that question makes sense but I just want to use it as the most effective communication tool I can so she and I can have more fun together! Thanks for reading and for any advice ☺️ submitted by /u/AdSilly2598 to r/OpenDogTraining [link] [comments]

Best E Collar for Dogs You Can Buy in 2025 (Price, Range, Battery)
Before we begin, please, do not get one of those cheap "Amazon Basics" e-collars. They're not up to the task for serious training. Obviously everyone’s got their own preferences, so take it with a grain of salt and drop what you’re using below. Here's my list: Generally the best Mini Educator (ET-300) - $199 - the most commonly praised model. It’s extremely reliable, works well even on low levels and has excellent battery life. You can pair it with a bungee quick-release collar (about 30 bucks) for better skin contact and comfort. EZ-900 - $229 - very similar to the Mini Educator. ergonomically shaped remote with less sensitive dial and dedicated buttons per dog. Feels a lot easier to handle compared to the Mini Educator. Totally worth the 30 bucks on top. Great for big dogs Dogtra 1900S - $274 - heavier-duty version meant for stubborn dogs. Offers strong communication and features like tone, vibration, light, and waterproofing. Works best for medium to large breeds. Great for long-haired dogs Dogtra ARC - $234 - slim, low-profile receiver ideal for long-haired dogs. Dogtra 280C - $214 - compact and comfortable with great customer service. Offers reliable control and solid range. The main difference between versions is the updated design and slightly improved ergonomics. The best e collar for dogs for most people is the Mini Educator (ET-300). submitted by /u/No_Lunch3889 to r/OpenDogTraining [link] [comments]

Showing my dogs old e collar and how the prongs can easily be removed.
My dog Finnegan had to go to a doggy boot camp many, many years ago. He was very destructive and we needed professional help badly. At this boot camp, they trained Finny in a very similar way to Kaya, even down to the same type of raised platform bed, which is called their "place." Most of these dog boot camps do use e collars, typically on very low settings, which doesn't hurt the dog at all. The e collars have a 0-100 scale and then anything past 100 is just called HIGH. Now, I've seen people accidentally turn their e collars up all the way, because it's actually a quite loose nob for the controls. When the clip first surfaced, I thought maybe he accidentally bumped it and turned it up. The fact that he is lying repeatedly shows that it was no accident. He shocked his dog for moving, and it makes me sick. E collars can be a tool, but many lazy people like Hasan use it to make their animal scared. Hell, even the e collar with the prongs has a vibration only mode, which is all I use. He could have admitted it and claimed he only used the vibration mode, but no, he continues to lie. What you see in the Hasan clip is Kaya holding her place, and Hasan absolutely shocks her when she moves. submitted by /u/FleuryIsMyIdol to r/h3h3productions [link] [comments]

LA Streamer defends shock collars, claims others don't train their dogs

Hasan shows off Kaya’s vibration collar used for off-leash training when she’s too far away to hear him call for her (NOT a shock collar)
No it is not a shock collar, no it doesn’t have shock prongs, no it’s not the same thing as a shock collar, no it doesn’t harm Kaya, no it does not cause a dog to squeal even if caught off guard, yes it has an AirTag. "He's an actual psychopath who would have guessed? Btw if you hurt animals like this i hope the worst finds you in this life and the next." r/LivestreamFails has a sane reaction to Hasan supposedly shock collaring his dog
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/LivestreamFail/comments/1o0sd83/hasan_shocks_his_dog_for_moving_out_of_frame/ HIGHLIGHTS He's an actual psychopath who would have guessed? Btw if you hurt animals like this i hope the worst finds you in this life and the next. Muslims don’t respect dogs, sadly. What a wild and frankly racist thing to say. "You're disgusted by the disgusting cultural traditions of people of a specific religion! That's racist and actually you're afraid of them, you're a phobic!" What """cultural tradition""" do Muslims have that mean they dont respect dogs? Again, this a just a completely unhinged comment to make even if we disregard the racism. Its like me seeing that story about that one US politicians that shot her own dog and saying "well Americans just hate dogs" In Islam dogs are seen as unclean and are not supposed to be pets and live in the home. but are only permitted for hunting/working. it’s not racist to point out this cultural tradition Saying they don’t respect dogs in relation to this post insinuates that it’s a Muslim thing to treat them poorly. What you said is accurate, but Hasan apparently being mean towards his dog has nothing to do with Islam… Posted in r/h3h3productions. Comments saying "POST TO LSF!". Almost every comment from that community. Even when this dude fucks up, it's like you guys give him ammunition. Be a little less obvious. Even with that being said, I don't think he shocked her but what a shitty reaction. Most obvious thing that happened somehow youre saying its h3h3s fault or his communities fault im done I know you're voting for Nigel Farage, but even then, you should understand what I'm saying. The clip was posted on H3's subreddit, and people clamored for it to be posted here before instantly posting. It just makes it look coordinated. All Hasan will do is say that it was taken out of context, the dog stumped its foot or something, and blame the brigade, and nothing will happen. Don't even like Nigel Farage so that's a really interesting conclusion to come to from someone you've never spoken to "What other choices are there!?" Mr Australian Jamaican the brain box that he is decides who im voting based on a reddit comment from what I think was about a month ago There is nothing you can call me that will hit as hard as being called a possible Farage voter, especially because it's true for you. Even H3 would be like "Come on, buddy. Farage?" Not what happened. People are desperate to drama-farm. It’s clear as day dude, he shocked the dog for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Unfortunately you received the info framed as such and cannot see it any other way. lol ok bud you’re delusional. Why did the dog yelp directly after he reaches on his desk. What do you think happened, she stepped on a bee? My dog yelps like this all the time when his claws get stuck on something. She was stepping up onto her bed. There's no cowering, there's no tail between the legs, and she's completely back to normal afterwards. I'm not the delusional one here, it's the legion of brigadiers desperate to find any clip they can to put a streamer in a bad light. Why do you think there were 5 identical posts in LSF moments after it was posted in Destiny's subreddit? Do you also force your dog to stay in a tiny square and get mad when it tries to leave? Look at how it was hesitating to even put a paw out of that square. This guy's never used a kennel. A Muslim not treating a dog right. Shocker. So we casually just saying racist shit now? Grow a spine. Is Muslim a race? It has without a shadow of a doubt been racialized for sure. Please don’t tell me im gonna have to sit here and explain to you what race is. Is christian a race? Lol, lmao even. Is Jewish a race? No, but jewish people usually have a shared ethnic background Holy fuck, this is disgusting. That poor dog - you can clearly see they are already scared as they are stepping off the platform, literally the second Hasan says to stop they quickly are getting back onto it, and he STILL SHOCKS THEM (you can see him reach and press the shock collar remote). That's fucking sick. Poor dog I feel terrible seeing this. It just wants to stretch its legs and he is mad jfc, this is gross. I feel sick Then having the dog pop up on the bottom for his sub notification - he clearly sees the dog as a prop for his stream and is punishing them for not being his little prop in the corner. God this is so wrong. Whoa seems like you really want to believe this guy abuses his dog! Wonder why! Cause I fucking love dogs and this guy fucking clearly is in this clip, what are you trying to imply? Even if there is no shock collar (you bet your ass there is one) - he is mad at her FOR NO REASON. You can clearly see she is SCARED to move off of that bed. And he DOES NOT CARE - AT ALL - that she yelps. Does not even for a second think "is she okay", it's just "fucking stop, Jesus Christ, what are you doing?". That tells us everything we need to know, shock collar aside. But you know nothing. You don't know that there's a collar you don't know what their relationship is you don't know why she's moving around or what happened to her paw and you don't know why he reacted the way he did. You're looking at a 1 minute clip and jumping to this worst case scenario conclusion that he's an animal abuser. You must want to believe a dog is getting hurt if that's your conclusion with literally thousands of hours of her on stream which suggest no such abuse and one minute that also confirms nothing but is ripe for speculation. "You watched a clip of him abusing his dog, but don't spend all day watching his stream. Therefore you are not allowed an opinion." That poor fucking dog, confined to a tiny bed, yelled at for moving. Nothing could justify what I just watched. Yeah see that dog isn't confined to a tiny bed. You know nothing. Lmao destiny ethan psychos really reach for anything these days You think people should abuse dogs or any animal freely? Where is your proof? Or you just pulling it out of your ass. I've interacted with enough dogs to see what getting shocked by a shocked color looks like It's a literal "trust me bro" in the wild Pot kettle Is there any proof he uses a shock collar its hard to see what else could be happening in that clip. Idk my dog is in perfect physical health and sometimes yelps over nothing It was the moment hasan kinda yells at her and reaches over with his left hand. The flinch and yelp happening at the same time, yeah I think it's most likely that he shocked her. But has he ever done anything that shows he has a shock collar on the dog. Like why would this be the one time he uses it on stream. I feel like this would have happened before if it was the case I can't explain why he would be dumb enough to do it on stream but it looks like he did 100%. Can you admit that it looks bad, like he shocks her? Sure, it looks bad if you have never owned a dog before. Dogs yelp for all sorts of reasons. Shock collar would be my last assumption watching that clip, yet it's LSF's first. That's kinda telling. Wonder what context there is behind this I think the dog has some injury on his paw thats why he tells him to stop moving. Mine also does some random whelp when he has like a thorn stuck between his paws Ok honestly thank you for another way to see this. i was going crazy. Its still weird and mean for him not to check on her tho 😭 Jesus fuck society is dead. “Someone make something up so I can lie to myself” Nah i was just trying to find a second explanation bc I didnt want to be overreacting to limited evidence. If you see i commented elsewhere in the thread that w more context its obvious what happened Destiny fans posting out of context clips again smh What's the context? To be fair this isn’t even a matter of lacking context, it’s a matter of having a functioning brain and not letting a subreddit spoon feed you bad faith slop and blindly believing random words on a digital screen.......... I'm just asking for what the explanation is if it isn't a shock collar Brother it just simply wasn’t anything remarkable, most likely thing is she just got caught on something. Does everything have to be some conspiracy? No conspiracy here. I see a clip where it’s pretty clear a dog gets up, gets scolded and yelps from something hurting it, then gets called spoiled. And where in that description is a shock collar? Is it in the room with us? Please don’t just reach magical conclusions because a post on Reddit tells you so. Be more charitable, please. Yeah this guy is fucked in the head... Shocking a dog cause he didn't stay laying down? Yeah this guy is fucked in the head... Shocking a dog cause he didn't stay laying down? Unless he has strict rules about having pets in the house, why does he care what the dog does, from the clips I’ve seen, it usually just chills in the corner Unless Hasan likes to keep the dog in frame for whatever reason, Let the dog go do whatever it wants wth lol. What a weird reason to get upset Dog training is weird, that could be her "place" which is important for her to actually stay put on if he orders her to. Edit: Y'all I'm not excusing it, I'm quite literally just answering the question of why he would do this lmao Why would a dog ever NEED to be on a bed without being able to move for an extended period? It's not even like she's a puppy anymore. Have you heard or seen videos of what dogs get up to when the owner leaves the house? It can be some real dangerous stuff, like "burn down the whole house" kind of dangerous. Is she literally not getting up to stretch and walk around? Also...the owner is literally in the house, put up some child safety barricades to stop them from going anywhere unwanted. There's so many better ways to treat a dog than shock it for literally getting up to move. submitted by /u/CummingInTheNile to r/SubredditDrama [link] [comments]

Went from “prong collars are evil” to “where has this been all my life?” 😂
So, I was always anti-prong. They looked bulky, medieval, and I’ve literally seen countless people picking pieces of their prong collars that fell apart or got tangled from the floor... that ain't for me I thought prongs were only for Cujo-level violent or uncontrollable dogs. Fast forward—I adopt a 4-month-old Australian Cattle Dog/Aussie Shepherd mix (aka kangaroo/raptor hybrid). Cute as heck, but showing signs of frustrated greeter syndrome. I did the “good dog dad” thing: Puppy classes at PetSmart (for the kids). Private training (for the wife and me). Then…the balls dropped. Growth spurt. Suddenly my flat collar turned into a medieval torture device for me. Switched to martingale, then slip lead. Manageable for me, but my wife and kids were getting rag-dolled by a furry velociraptor on Red Bull. We leveled up training to the point of working outside with the trainer’s dog. Total chaos. My pup went from “good student” to “parkour audition.” Finally, my trainer pulls out the prong collar. At that point, my back already needed a chiropractor, so I said, “Sure, why not?” Slapped that bad boy on… game changer. No jerking. No yanking. Just 2–3 fingers of guidance. Dog listens. I’m not dislocating my shoulder. My kids and wife can actually walk him without reenacting scenes from Jurassic Park. Is he perfect? Nah. He still wants to chase rabbits and skunks, and still locks onto other dogs. But NOW I can actually practice things like leg blocking, direction changes, desensitization, no-reward markers—without being yeeted into orbit. Best part? Since switching, this dude is getting way more outdoor time (not just dog parks) because walking him is finally enjoyable. So yeah… this former prong-hater is eating crow. 🐦 Just wanted to share a positive with my little land shark. https://preview.redd.it/rcrmdmdiwipf1.png?width=527&format=png&auto=webp&s=b250e71e1fdd7ce853336b5ad3c915199400fba4 submitted by /u/Japa905 to r/OpenDogTraining [link] [comments]

tired of getting hate for using an e collar.
i always get comments like “you’re shocking her!” and one dude even compared the use of an e collar to slavery. or i’m told “she doesn’t need that!” by people who have zero clue on how to train a dog. people will be afraid to try it on even at a 10, meanwhile i’m not afraid of a 30. it doesn’t hurt, if i had to describe the feeling of the dogtra at low levels, it’s like a light breeze of painless TV static. the thing is, she’s got an excellent foundation, like a cake. the e collar is the frosting on top. the cake is good bare, eating plain frosting is gross. but it’s best when they’re combined. submitted by /u/corn_dog_ate_the_cob to r/OpenDogTraining [link] [comments]

On the successful use of E-collars with "untrainable"/independent dogs...
Hi all! New here but not new to training with my personal animals. I've owned dogs all my life and worked with wolfdogs for close to 10 years now. 3.5 years ago, I bought a high content wolfdog from someone who's been raising a very unique line of OFA tested & selectively bred wolfdogs since the late 1980's, and when I explained my goals to her for my dog and lifestyle while going through the application process the year before the litter was born, she reccomended e-collar training. Other breeders I'd approached told me off leash training and living primarily indoors was impossible and if you did teach them to recall, it would no longer be reliable at 2-3 years old. I was told that I wasn't trying anything that hadn't been tried before and that it wouldn't work and I was being naive. I eventually, in researching lines, approached this breeder who, it turns out, had utilized ecollars in the past when training at obedience classes with her wolfdogs (my girl's ancestors and family) and saw a huge amount of potential for what could be accomplished with more routine use of ecollars with these guys in addition to R+ and P- methodology. I bought an ecollar and learned how to use it, and worked with my current dogs with the help of some awesome trainers to dial in my timing and how to load it and such, so when the time came I was very confident in introducing an ecollar to my wolfdog around 6mo as the teenager phase hit. Anyways, long story short, I have a fully matured 94% high content wolfdog who has a beautiful recall and checks in off-leash, who also lives indoors and travels with me regularly, and cohabitates with other dogs. And no matter how much I demonstrate the success we've had and show how the ecollar is used and what sort of lifestyle it opens up for my animals, I still get a lot of flack about my choice of training tools and am told I'm "shocking her into submission". But to me, the proof is in the pudding. If more folks were willing to be open-minded about training tools they're unfamiliar with, maybe more folks with wolfdogs or other stubborn and independent dogs could give them a greater level of freedom like mine is able to enjoy :) Here's some photos of my lovely girl Zephyr on some of our hikes. We hike both public land and private land, hence why sometimes she's wearing a pack and sometimes not! submitted by /u/wilde_run to r/OpenDogTraining [link] [comments]

Daughters dog breaks grandsons collar bone
Last Friday, we went to a cottage that my company owns. We have been there about a dozen times over the last 10 years, 3 times with my grandson and never a problem. We arrived around 2pm and my grandson was running round the massive garden having a fantastic time. A few hours later my other daughter arrived with her husband and dog (an 8 month golden retreiver). This dog has had very little training. She jumps up at people, she steals food (my grandson isn't able to sit and eat a meal without her jumping up constantly) and has no recall training at all. Within 5 minutes of arriving at this cottage, whilst my daughter was unpacking their car, her husband decided to throw a ball for the dog the full length of the garden (not gently, quite aggressively). The dog was full of energy after an hour and a half drive and bounded for the ball, running back at full pelt, hitting my grandson, who somersaulted in the air landing with a massive thud. 28kg dog vs 13kg child resulting in him breaking his collar bone. The poor thing spent his 5th birthday 2 days later just sitting in a chair not being able to do anything. When it happened, my daughter, the dogs owner, was beside herself, crying, running around frantically trying to get ice packs and medicine. When we got back from the hospital however there was no apology from my daughter or her husband, no remorse was shown. He even said "Jimmy ran into the path of Penny (the dog)" which I found a strange thing to say at the time. There was also no remorse shown at all over the whole weekend. The dog was allowed to run around the house like a lunatic, going near Jimmy who was now totally petrified, stealing food from people (a cupcake from my grandson who was sitting in a chair). We stayed the weekend trying not to be pissed off with the circumstances, but then cut the holiday short coming back on Monday as it was too difficult to cope there. Last night my daughter (grandsons mum) simply told her sister that if she brings the dog over to our house in future, the dog would have to be on a lead because we could never risk this again (only a few weeks ago the dog jumped up at Jimmy and badly scratched his cheek narrowly missing his eye). So it's massively kicked off. My daughter says that it's not her husbands or her fault but that it's the fault of the child for running into the path of the dog and its his mother's fault for not making sure he was safe. She was sat on a blanket at the time and as she saw this unfolding, tried to get up to remove Jimmy from the path of the dog, but wasn't and could never have been quick enough. My thoughts are that the dog owner should have taken more care when throwing a ball for a dog that could cause so much injury to a child and also had the child in his vision knowing what could happen. We're lucky he isn't paralysed or dead with the way he fell. It was like a car hitting a child and being thrown in the air. What are people's thoughts on this? Am I the asshole ? submitted by /u/AngryBird-Terence to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

This is an Anti Wolf Heck Collar. The purpose of the collar is to protect the dog wearing it when and if it has to fight wolves. The collar base protects the dog's throat and carotid arteries, while the spikes are intended to deter bites to the neck or even injure wolves trying to do so.

AITA for asking my girlfriend to either muzzle her dog while I sleep or get a bark collar?
So I (22m) have been with my girlfriend (25f) for almost 7 years now (it will be 7 years next month). Back in late 2017 she went to live with her father after getting into an argument with her mother (long story). For a little over a year our relationship was long distance as I was in NJ and she was in Cali. While in Cali, she adopted a dog (a pit/rott mix). I never saw the dog (in person) while she was in Cali because the only time I visited her she just stayed with me in an airbnb room. Back in December I got an apartment and asked if she'd move in with me. She said "only if I can bring the dog". We discussed this and she assured me that the dog was "house trained" and a "good boy". Then on January 30th I picked her up in the airport and the dog barked the entire ride home, a sign of what was to come. She brought it into my apartment and it wouldn't stop barking. It's the loudest dog I've ever seen. It took a piss on the floor literally 15 minutes after she took it for a walk. She assured me that this behavior was unusual for him and that the dog "just needs time to adjust". Day after day, week after week, the dog barked all day and most of the night. If he's not sleeping or eating, he's barking. He's so loud that even with white noise playing and earplug in, I can still hear him. Somehow my girlfriend isn't bothered by this and instead complains about the white noise I play. She keeps telling me "he just needs more time to adjust". I went from sleeping 8-9 hours a day to getting 4 hours of sleep a day, if that. I work around 70 hours a week. I need my sleep, I'm going crazy. A month ago, I told her that since it's been 4 months with no improvement that she needs to do something about the barking. I suggested getting a bark collar or muzzling him while I sleep and she asked if I was joking. When she finally realized I was serious she went off on me and called me cruel for even suggesting it. She also thinks i'm "jealous" of the dog because of the attention she gives it. No joke. Now its been FIVE MONTHS and nothing has improved at all. He still pees in the apartment no matter how often he's taken for a walk, and barks literally every few seconds. We haven't has sex since the fight we got into a month ago and she's been completely unreceptive to any physical affection. submitted by /u/ultimate_throwaway5 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
