Need healthier wet food that won’t bankrupt us
We have two healthy 7 year old cats who have eaten fancy feast for years with no issues but vets always say it’s the cat food equivalent of McDonald’s. We recently tried Smalls and it was hit or miss BUT the real problem was the cost — more than 4 times what FF costs. We’re willing to spend more but not *that* much more. Any suggestions? submitted by /u/sancastro to r/catfood [link] [comments]

Honestly what is happening with fancy feast???
I have seen so many posts here about things in fancy feast cans and fancy feast food in general sickening cats ;(. I feel so worry about it. But also, what is going to happened? FF was an incredible budget option for rotation or for shelters ;(, I would love to hear some explanation about what is happening and why. And alternatives for FF food in the meanwhile. And to end this, I would like to say respectufully that people making fun of this situation is not funny or helping. ;( I have seen comments mocking about how many of us feed FF and how about they were right about Purina being bad (and still don't think this is true because this situation is still so confusing?). submitted by /u/MariaSalander to r/catfood [link] [comments]

Fancy Feast causing illness?
My cat got very sick on Sunday and we couldn’t figure out why. Had to go to the emergency vet and they couldn’t figure out why either. We’ve been feeding her fancy feast and I came across a couple posts on Reddit today talking about fancy feast causing similar symptoms to what she was experiencing. Diarrhea, vomiting, no appetite, lethargic. Could be a coincidence but seems like it’s something that should be investigated at the very least. I’m assuming calling them directly is the first step but is there anything else that can be done to make sure they actually look into it? Also very grateful to the folks who already posted, I would have kept trying to feed her this food otherwise. I hope everyones cats are doing better!! Update/Edits: On Monday evening my other cat, who had continued to get fancy feast up until I saw the Reddit posts, had diarrhea and vomited 10-15 mins after eating dinner. We stopped feeding them the wet food and switched to only dry and today things have mostly gone back to normal besides the cat who originally got sick still having a low appetite. I also noticed they’re drinking more water than usual today. Fancy Feast we fed them the last few days leading up to them getting sick (not sure exactly which cause we rotate so just listing everything we have): - Gravy Lovers - beef, chicken, turkey - Creamy Delights - salmon, chicken, chicken cream sauce - Florentine series but I don’t have any more cans so not sure which specific ones submitted by /u/fiatheresa to r/catfood [link] [comments]

Guess I can’t feed my cats any wet food!
I made a post yesterday excited that I had found an affordable wet food that my cats not only ate, but didn’t throw up 5 seconds later. This has been an ongoing battle with FOUR picky cats with sensitive stomachs so finding a wet food they don’t hurl is like finding a unicorn. (And also less than .50 cents to feed) Instead, I got REEMED in the comments saying I was feeding my cats garbage because of ONE single ingredient - carrageenan. Except ALL the wet food they’ll eat and won’t get sick on has that ingredient. Fancy feast makes them sick. IAMS makes them sick. They will NOT eat more expensive wet food, they’ll straight up kick the bowls over and walk away. I wasted nearly $200 on ridiculously expensive Tiki cat and Wuvera last year that I had to donate to the shelter because my cats will not touch it. So to appease internet strangers, guess my cats are gunna get ONLY dry food since apparently a natural seaweed derived thickener is evil. I’m sure this won’t affect the health of my cat who has a history of urinary crystals or my senior with kidney issues. submitted by /u/Briebird44 to r/catfood [link] [comments]

Anyone else's cat having negative effects from Fancy Feast cans?
Hey everyone I wanted to warn you and perhaps know if anyone else faced this issue. I bought some Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers "Chicken feast in Gravy" wet food cans for my cat. 10 days ago she had locked up and seized, becoming lethargic and almost non-responsive. I immediately rushed her to the closest vet in tears and panic and they said it was almost as if she was poisoned, but I reassured them I had nothing poisonous to cats and that I had cat-proofed my home and that my cat doesn't eat things she isn't supposed to. I paid almost $700 for some blood tests, medicine, and the emergency fee. I went throughout my whole apartment throwing away stuff I thought she may have eaten and cleaning everything. last night I gave her a can of this chicken feast in gravy fancy feast and it happened again. I luckily had gabapentin on hand from the vet and administered it to her, I held her and kept a close eye on her, ready to rush her to the ER if needed. Luckily she came out of the episode within a couple minutes and spent the night recovering while I stayed up all night watching her closely, sobbing. I know it's this cat food now, because 10 days ago, without me considering this could have been a poison I gave her the can of fancy feast, and that is when she had her first episode. I looked at the bottom of my cans and they have the same numbers on the bottom 60081162 L3HE50917 If you have any like this, please call the fancy feast number or at least discard them and protect your cats. since the incident I've done a lot of research on cat foods, and I feel terrible for ever even feeding this to my cat, I didn't know fancy feast wasn't good. I am never going to buy this for her again. She has fully recovered now but her symptoms at the time were: falling over, unable to balance, stiffening, an attempt in raising/twisting her arm and tail more than her body would allow. It was mortifying. She's had this wet food before in the past so this must be a bad batch from whatever factory it came from since both of these cans had the same serial number. the can from front view, showing the chicken feast in gravy label the bottom view showing the details of best by date: january 2028 and the serial number 60081162 L3HE50917 Please let me know if this is something that's happened with your cat or has been documented. And if you have any of these cans, throw them away. My cat is 4 years old, has no allergies. UPDATE 2 days after posting: My cat is still fine after a diet change, I have emailed Fancy Feast in regards to updating my initial call to them and asking about factory information from which mine and your cans came from. I have brought up many of your comments and thank you to those who have provided their stories and can serial numbers. I am currently awaiting response from them. UPDATE 3 days after posting: No response yet from Fancy Feast, I reported the affected serial numbers to Chewy as well. They say they're going to be opening an investigation. UPDATE 5 days after posting: I got a call back from Purina, I gave them these three serial numbers and more information on my cat's symptoms of the time. They issued a refund for the food and I gave them my vet bill information. They're opening an investigation on it. I encourage everyone who has been affected by fancy feast to make their own calls and complaints, as it stands they have yet to get back to me about the matter. These are the affected serial numbers I know of: 60081162 L3HE50917 53171162 L2HF42255 52989052 L2R1951503 submitted by /u/cactire to r/catfood [link] [comments]

17 year old cat only wants fancy feast wet food in gravy help
As the title says, it’s all she wants. She doesn’t shut up unless she gets it. We’ve tried so many wet cat foods with better, higher quality ingredients with actual fish and shrimp chunks.. she doesn’t want it. I guess this is a vent but also cry for help. Is fancy feast an ok brand?
Hello! I have a 4 year old boy cat named Coal. A few months ago he had an issue with constipation that has since cleared up. The vet recommended we start implementing some wet food into his diet. At first I tried to feed him some of the more pricer brands (I and Love and You, Blue Buffalo, Tiki Cat, etc.) and he absolutely would not eat them. I decided to try the Fancy Feast Delights with Cheddar and he absolutely fell in love. It’s the only wet food I can get him to eat. I try my best to feed him the best food. I’ve heard Fancy Feast is like the Great Value of cat food. Is this true? I just want what’s best for my boy and I’m worried feeding him cheap food will be bad for him. Thoughts? submitted by /u/Patient-Fisherman-23 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

What kind of wet food are you feeding your cats?
Update: id like to thank everyone for sharing their experiences and preferences on their cat's wet food diet. I heavily considered fancy feast, as its the one I see commented the most. I didn't buy that brand, but instead went with Sheba. (Mainly for the way its portioned) If they don't do well on this one, I'll definitely try fancy feast!!! Thank you everyone again🫶💖 Hello everyone, I own 2 male cats, and I've been trying to do more research into their nutrition. I don't know much, but I've been considering switching to wet food. They have been fed kibble majority of their lives. My oldest cat is 5, and my youngest is 1. What wet food do you feed, or recommend? My older cat can sometimes get sick on his food too, so preferably something that can be easy on his tummy. I'm open to any nutritional advice or information as well, as I'm not very educated, but I'm interested in learning. :)) I'd love to provide the best for my fur babies. submitted by /u/nusner16 to r/catfood [link] [comments]

How often should my cats get wet food?
I have 2 cats, both female. 5 years old. (They are sisters). Lucy is my chubbers, she’s 14 lbs. Luna is 7 pounds. (She was also the runt of their litter). They get dry food every day, about a 1/2 cup in the morning and at night. Because of Lucy being so chubby, I’ve been giving them wet food twice a week, a half a can of fancy feast each. (Which they LOVE, especially Lucy). But I’m wondering is that often enough? When they get wet food, they don’t get dry food that night, the wet is their dinner. submitted by /u/FragileHealth_2010 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

how often do your cats get wet food?
brand new to cats, we recently got our first kitten and we are about to get a second one because he is lonely and showing signs of anxiety, both of us work a lot and we want to keep him happy I keep reading so much stuff about an all wet diet being the best for preventing future health issues, I am super paranoid about this because my mom's 3yr old cat only got wet food like 1-2x a week and he is now on a very expensive prescription urinary care diet for the rest of his life due to renal issues.. he cant even have treats I have been feeding him all wet (3 cans per day of fancy feast) but this morning i did the math it just isn't affordable for us long term, especially with the new kitten (would be ~160$ a month just on food) we have a metal water fountain I see him use a lot but I know cats dont drink like they should and im so worried about his long term health TLDR is 2 dry meals and 1 wet per day enough to keep him hydrated and prevent future health problems? submitted by /u/peppercorn6269 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Vet told me to fully stop feeding cat dry food
I just came out of the vet, I have a year old cat, extremely healthy, somewhat active, and has no health issues. He’s also about one to two pounds overweight. I feed him one small half a can of Fancy Feast twice a day and a half cup of dry food every day. He has plenty of water and has had no litter issues. The vet said that he needs to be cut off of his dry food completely and just given the wet food. I asked about his dental concerns not having the dry and she said that he would be fine with just wet, cats don’t even chew on their food so he would be fine with just wet and no dental problems would arise. So I want to make sure, because my mom says we should stick with a mixture of dry and wet and just cut back on the dry. What should I do? submitted by /u/Wide-Trick4243 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

What's up with Fancy Feast the past 3 months?
Has anyone else been noticing problems with quality control or that the Fancy Feast cans are suddenly making your cat sick or less lively? My cat is diabetic and has only eaten from the Fancy Feast grilled seafood assortment cans exclusively for over a year, but 3 months ago he stopped eating the salmon flavor completely and there was an increase in gnats in the room I feed him in around that time and he started throwing up the food. I don't know if that flavor specifically goes bad faster or if they aren't shipping it properly. I assumed it was just a problem with that flavor in that batch and I trashed it. The gnats dissapeared completely after I got rid of the box. Since then we've been through more boxes from 3 separate distributors (Walmart, Chewy, and a local gas station) from both the 30-can pack and the 24-can variant and my cat still wouldn't eat that flavor. He was eating the other flavors, so I dealt with that. At some point I tried him on the other grilled assortment with the beef and chicken flavors when the seafood was out of stock, but he didn't like the chicken at all (I think my cat has a preference for seafood flavor over chicken in general. I don't think that is Fancy Feast's fault at least) and he ate the beef, but it had a stronger kind of gross lingering smell than the seafood cans ever did. Anyways...I got a fresh box of the normal seafood assortment last week and he wouldn't touch ANY of the flavors in it. I checked his blood sugar and it was fully within normal range and there is nothing else new around here that I can think of that could make him sick or lethargic so my conclusion is that something is wrong with the food. The blue can had always been his favorite and he suddenly wouldnt not touch any of them this box. I can excuse how sometimes the cans are dented inside the box, but when things are off about the food itself, it is a problem. I've noticed in the past few months too even within the same box and flavor that when you open the cans, the amount of greasy gravy stuff on the top varies. Like some cans look a lot moister than the contents of other ones that just seem very dried out or crispy-looking. Since the gnat summoning batch I had to trash, I've been contemplating switching, but this box was just the final straw. I went looking on google seeing if it had been recalled and could not find anything. Did they change the recipe? Is it a quality control issue? Has anyone else noticed their cat acting weird and not eating the Fancy Feast canned food assortment boxes this month or last month? It's not even close to the expiration date (JUN 2027). I don't know what they've done to it, but my cat is revolted by this batch. Update. I went to open and retrieve a fresh can and take pictures of what it looks like and the serial number for the post and noticed there is a whole dead bug inside the can. Looks like some kind of mosquito. I'm definitely going to try out other brands of wet food at this point. My cat needs to eat regularly to regulate his blood sugar and if something is wrong with the food this frequently, the struggle isn't worth it to me. Its been like a lottery every time I buy a box on which flavor's he'll eat and how the quality is. TLDR: Just curious if anyone else has had these problems lately with the food. Update#2: I went and got a bunch of singular cans and packets from a bunch of other brands and flavors to test with my cat this morning. put down the first one and he started gobbling the food down, which is great he's eating again. I think I made the right call. Other people seem to be having similar problems. Glad I'm not alone. Think I ignored quality problems for too long. Hoping Fancy Feast fixes whatever is wrong with the batches lately because it is a lot easier and cheaper to buy the bulk boxes than individual cans like this. Update #3: My cat unfortunately passed away (October 18) from ketoacidosis (NOT Fancy Feast). I know there is a lot of fear-mongering going around in part because of this post and similar posts. For people who have diabetic cats and had a vet tell you specifically to feed your cat canned Fancy Feast (this was the case with my cat), I would like to highlight a PSA: Ask your vet for a proper alternative and instructions on switching foods if you are inclined. Do not switch if your cat is still eating the food fine and you have noticed nothing wrong with your batches. Do NOT try and experiment with food or test / switch through too many foods at once with a diabetic animal like I did. Get vet guidance and cycle through foods slower to make sure you are able to adjust the insulin properly to accomodate the new food. Be careful to only pick low carb, high protein options. I don't directly blame Fancy Feast for this, but if I had never had to switch the food in the first place, maybe things would have turned out differently. That's all. submitted by /u/Hyperbeef22 to r/catfood [link] [comments]

Which Ethical cat food brands do you guys recommend?
Which Ethical brands offer some of the better wet and dry cat food and do you feed them to your cat? By Ethical i meant brands that aren't: Nestle - (Purina, Friskies, Fancy Feast, Pro Plan, Go-Cat, Felix) Mars - (Whiskas, Sheba, Pedigree, Royal Canin). They have faced plenty of lawsuits regarding unethical animal testing, slave labor and factory farming etc... Personally I try to stay away from brands like them. If you guys know any cat food manufacturers that value animal welfare, humane practices and have a ethical sourcing of ingredients. submitted by /u/kajsawesome to r/catfood [link] [comments]

my kitten has suddenly stopped eating her wet food
I’ve been obsessive about my kitty’s diet ever since i got her. i’ve been trying to keep her on a good high quality moisture rich high protein diet and had a great food rotation. she was eating a mix of tiki cat, weruva, nulo, stella and chewy, and lotus and literally ate any food flavor or texture! she was eating about 1.5-2 cans of wet food a day with a little dry food left out at night or if im at work. last week i decided to add some budget friendly options to the rotation since ive been trying to work on my spending habits. i tried both fancy feast and tiny tiger. she would not touch it. so i was giving her some meals with her old favorites and some with the new stuff. she would eat the expensive stuff and not touch the new stuff. now this week she’s suddenly ignoring ALL wet food. she literally starved herself for my entire 10 hour work day (i have an automatic wet food feeder)!!! i got home and opened a fresh can of her favorite tiki cat, she licked up the juices and left the food! finally after a few hours i panicked and gave her a bowl of dry and she scarfed it down. i was reallllllly hoping to wean her completely from dry food by the time she 9 months old and now im panicking that it’s all she’ll eat. any suggestions?! im desperate! submitted by /u/Weak_Ad1001 to r/catfood [link] [comments]

All 5 of my cats got extremely sick from purina classic paté. 5 ER visits so far. Need advice for food so they can stay alive.
Edit AGAIN: She has finally ate about 3 hours ago and is doing well so far. Her son’s second xray came back and he no longer has pancreatitis and the inflammation is nearly completely gone. He is back to normal, eating, peeing, pooping, cuddling. She is acting better now that she has ate, she wants more but I know to wait she can’t eat everything at once. She also will have a checkup tomorrow or the next day to get another xray to see how she’s improved compared to her son. Also, I am extremely grateful to the people who gave me actual advice. And to the people who have either messaged me or commented dealing with the same situation I’m so sorry and I can only hope your babies are going to be okay, report it to the FDA, to Purina and if it was chewy like most of us, get a refund for it. I’m unable to reply to anyone and can’t physically or emotionally deal with going through negative Reddit vets who do not even know the whole story or anyone else’s or hasn’t even researched. Very easy to search it up, so many people dealing with this batch causing the same illness in their cat(s). Also, the first cat to start showing severe sickness has been fine the past 8 days or more since getting help & cutting him off from the food. Edit to add: I do not care to argue the cause, considering timeline and who ate what and how much and many other factors I don’t have time to explain I need my cat to eat, 4 vets, 2 clinics and hundreds of others going through this right now with this batch all know the cause. Even purina does or they wouldn’t be paying peoples medical bills, give me advice on what to feed my dying cats PLEASE. I do not care to argue on if purina would recall fancy feast, they’ve made cats sick last year and there was NO RECALL. They’re paying everyone’s vet bills and refunding all the food. To my knowledge, hundreds have reported this and my 3 vets have, my brothers vet has, and other owners and vets dealing with this have. Still no recall. This isn’t new for purina to not recall. Please just give me advice on what food is like crack for cats so my babies who are struggling to recover can eat. Thank you. So the past 2 weeks have been horrific. If you feed your cat purina fancy feast wet food id steer clear from all of it but specifically the classic pâtés. I am exhausted from 2 weeks of being up 24/7 to try and save my cats, but it started out with either lethargy & disinterest in food and or projectile vomiting & throwing up over and over and over again. Duke threw up over 30 times. After they all ran this course including blood in their puke at some point due to inflammation of their gastrointestinal system, they would not eat or drink anything. These cats are cats who are ALWAYS hungry to the point of it being annoying. Well that all stopped. Their X-rays showed their ENTIRE gastrointestinal system from top to bottom to be EXTREMELY inflamed. Dx with severe IBD & pancreatitis. Serial number 43 is what’s really made them sick. I won’t continue to go on because I need something my 3 cats will eat whom are still recovering. I have given them over 30 plus choices of food so far. Nothing. Even with cerenia and an appetite stimulant, they will not eat. They don’t want boiled chicken, no tuna, aq no treats, 20 different cans of food of all different types of meat, nothing. 10 different packages of wet junk food squeezable pouches and 6 pouches of gravies& broth. Only 1 choice of dry food. Nothing. This will be nalas 7th day without food ( yes she went to the ER and got some hydration & other things 2 days ago) she will not eat anything. What’s a food that’s like crack for them? Dry food or wet either works she needs to eat. None of my cats like those go gurt like pouch treats before and currently. Obviously I will not be giving them fancy feast, they don’t want it either before finding out it was the cause they knew something was wrong with it :( submitted by /u/Litalonely to r/catfood [link] [comments]

Wet food brands that won’t break the bank?
Hi! I (20f) am adopting a 3 yr old cat in a month. I want to feed her a primarily wet food diet since I know it’s generally healthier than dry. I’m estimating she’ll need around 200 calories daily since she’s 10 lbs, maybe 1 big can per day with a little dry in the evenings. What brands of wet food are healthier than Friskies/Fancy Feast but not insanely pricey for a college student to afford? Healthy ones like Earthborn and Wellness cost nearly $100 for 48 big cans vs like 30 for Friskies. Is there a middle ground? Thanks! submitted by /u/zestypastacraver to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

What’s your cats favorite dry food?
Hi all, Looking to add some variety to my cat’s dry food! She gets about 1/4 a cup a day but that’ll last her 2-3 days before I refill her bowl. She gets anywhere from 4.5-5oz of wet food a day as well (morning and night). Right now as far as wet food, my girl is not picky. I’ve established a rotation of Tiki Cat After Dark, Honest Kitchen, and Fancy Feast so far. All different types - shreds, pate, gravy, she loves it all. For dry food, I’m currently feeding a mix of Tiki Cat and Purina LiveClear (long story short, fiancé is allergic to cats, thought we would try out this food to see if it helps when we adopted her but he’s oddly…not allergic to her at all so we don’t need to repurchase tbh). Any recommendations or favorites? Thanks! 😊 submitted by /u/chocobeaus to r/catfood [link] [comments]

My childhood cat, Mr. Cat, after he went MIA for two weeks, only to be found living with a neighbor. My mom had to feed him fancy feast for the rest of his life to get him to stick around.

He's got food, just not his gravy lover's fancy feast so he's been sitting like this purring aggressively all morning.
