Is Google killing this off?
Several of my friends love my home automation, which largely relies on Google commands to devices I have casually peppered throughout my house. We went to build a similar system for a friend who bought a new house, only to find that literally NONE of the first party devices I'm using are available for sale. Google Hub Max? Nope. Google Home Max? Nope. Google Mini's? nope. Google Home and Google Speakers? Nope. The only thing we could find was a leftover Google Hub at a Home Depot. I'm assuming this is now officially a dead eco-system? Should we all be moving to Amazon? I don't want that lol submitted by /u/HankHippoppopalous to r/googlehome [link] [comments]

Gemini for Home is a major disappointment
I'll start by saying I generally really like AI; I use it daily in both my personal life and work, so I've become very accustomed to its strengths, flaws and quirks. While I hate AI being inappropriately shoehorned into every product and service purely for the sake of it, a smart home assistant feels like one of the few use-cases where a large language model can really shine and be beneficial. Since it was first announced over a year ago, I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Gemini for Home, in hopes it would finally fix the gripes and limitations I had with Google Assistant -- so I was really excited to see the invite notification pop up on my phone yesterday morning. Unfortunately, it's been a terrible experience so far, and feels like a massive regression. If I could opt out and revert back to the old assistant, I absolutely would. The good It's not all bad -- I'll start off with the things I like: There's now a wide selection of natural-sounding voices, versus the two options we previously had in the UK. It can respond to and answer more complex and specific questions. It has a much better contextual understanding when asking follow-up queries. It can "remember" custom information and apply it to all future queries. The flashy multi-coloured LEDs when saying "hey google" are pretty cool. Bugs & regressions It keeps informing me that it "cannot control devices" for certain commands, or states that a device is offline when it's not. Some of my rooms have multiple lights in a fixture, which assistant used to treat as a single unit. Gemini mostly handles this fine, but will occasionally ask me which one I want to control and list them all out. Gemini loves to silently ignore many of my queries, giving no response. Voice selection annoyingly seems to be configured across the whole household, rather than being set on an individual level (using voice match) like before. I have a few TVs which use a smart plug (for power control) and a CCwGTV for casting. If I say "turn on the TV", Gemini now always asks me which device it should turn on. I've not been able to find a workaround, either by changing the device names, using routines, or changing my phrasing. If I try to correct something it says, it'll sometimes save that info to persistent memory, even though it's only temporarily relevant information. It occasionally gets stuck processing commands (taking >10s). Assistant used to do this occasionally, but it's been quite common with Gemini. There's an extra 1-5 seconds of delay in controlling devices compared to before. I've seen it get stuck in a loop a couple of times, where it repeatedly sent commands to my lights a couple dozen times before quitting (emitting a 'ping' sound each time). I've had a few cases where it's controlled devices in another room, or all devices of the same type across the house, even though there's a matching device in the same room as the speaker. It occasionally cuts off mid-response. This one's a long-standing bug with Assistant. Limitations One of the major benefits of using an LLM is the flexibility and seamless conversations -- yet it feels incredibly rigid and painful to talk to at times, almost like navigating a phone tree. It may be orchestrated by an LLM, but it's architecture is evidently not agentic, and instead based around a very fixed workflow. It's not smart at deciphering intent: asking it to "make a cuppa" does not turn the kettle on, even with a piece of saved info instructing it to do so. There are various device sensors and controls it can't interact with, such as CO2 or PM2.5 levels. These show correctly in the Google Home app, either under the device or when querying the 'ask home' AI. Though I believe this was also a limitation with the old Assistant. It's unable to chain multiple unrelated commands, or perform multi-step operations, e.g. "tell me what song is playing and turn off the lights". It'll do one, but the other will be silently ignored. The memory functionality is incredibly limited; from my testing, it seems this information cannot be used to change behaviour or device control. There also seems to be no way to view or manage the memories it's stored within the app. It seems to be unable to create automations via voice commands, which I seem to recall being an advertised feature? I have Google Home Premium. Gemini for Home has much fewer tools and capabilities than the standard Gemini model. For instance, it can't seem to retrieve web pages in full, or search through reviews and descriptions of places in Google Maps. Hallucinations Why would I ever ask my smart speaker for information if there's a reasonable chance of it being wrong? All LLM models suffer from hallucinations to some extent, but Gemini for Home has to be the worst I've seen. It has completely hallucinated sensor readings, even attributes that a device doesn't support. It told me the completely wrong date or information for some events on my calendar, and often gets days of the week confused. It's given me incorrect information for local places (e.g. stating my house's postcode instead of the one for the business address). I appreciate it's still in the public beta phase, but I would have expected the major issues and limitations to have been ironed out over the last 6 months. This honestly feels like a proof-of-concept at best. I'd also be interested to hear what people like about it, or if you've found any workarounds for the above. submitted by /u/thebigdolphin1 to r/googlehome [link] [comments]

Ripping all my Google homes out tomorrow.
It's impressive how poorly managed the Google home stack has been over the last ~decade, I was super early adopter, bought all the things, leaned all the way in, dealt with the bugs and growing pains for so long but have seen it get nothing but worse year after year, slowly turning into just our timer and white noise setting machines and now not even that. Going to kill them all and go with a dumb solution or get a voice preview edition of HA for this use case. submitted by /u/DerzKing to r/googlehome [link] [comments]

Honestly, if you were building a new smart home system from scratch, would you choose Google, Amazon Alexa, or something else?
I'm asking for myself. I'm creating new smart home systems from scratch and am debating which platform to use. TBH, they all seem to suck in different ways. If you had it all to do over again, would you still choose Google or avoid it like the plague at this point? Everyone in the house has Pixel phones and uses Google for a lot of things. We also have Amazon Prime. No one has iPhones or uses Apple for much in our house. I feel like the new Google Streamer 4K could be a really good central hub. It's got a Matter over Thread border router with a good brain. But then I'd need to get Google Nest speakers for every room which are still surprisingly expensive considering Google has discontinued them and will be releasing the new version in a few months. But Google seems to be pulling support and disabling services left and right, and I'm also hearing rumors that Google will be creating a new subscription plan which I don't want to get tied down with. Meanwhile, the Alexa Echo Dots are dirt cheap and seem like really good hardware for the money. They come with lots of useful sensors and gimmicks built in (proximity detection, temperature sensors, and ability to double as mesh wifi routers if I choose to get an Eero router, but not as Matter over Thread border routers like the Google speakers). However, at the end of the day I don't feel fantastic about being tied down to Amazon either. We don't have any Apple devices, so that doesn't make sense for us. I know the true Home Automation geeks love Home Assistant, but I'm not that tech savvy and that seems daunting to me. My needs are pretty simple. Right now, I basically just want really good control over my lighting. I don't particularly care if the thing uses AI to talk to me in a more human voice, I just want it to dim the lights correctly when I ask it to. I'll probably build out more later, but I don't foresee any advanced needs outside the menu of options for any of these systems (then again, Google has been disabling basic functions that I would have wanted, so who knows). So yeah, the question comes down to what I said earlier. If you were starting over which ecosystem would you invest in? ------ Update: Thanks for all the advice and input! I think I'm going to start off by buying the Google Streamer 4k and one used Nest Audio speaker, with the goal of using that to get some simple functions up and running quickly while I work to build out the Home Assistant. We want a streamer and smart speakers for entertainment no matter what. Google streamer seems really well reviewed and is only $62 right now, and I can get a used Nest Audio for about $50 on eBay. If the speaker is working well for our needs, I'll grab several more when the next generation comes out in a few months and the price of refurbished v2 (current generation) models drops. I think the end goal will be to use Home Assistant for the brains, Google Streamer as a thread border router, and the speakers for very basic voice control. I'll be trying to stick to Matter over Thread products as much as I can, and am really hoping that the new line of cheap Ikea stuff is actually as good as it looks like it might be. A few of you have warned me that HA just doesn't do voice control well, in which case I guess I'll just use the speakers for music and media playback. I can live with that. l'll also check out Homey, as someone suggested. I hadn't heard of it, but it sounds cool. Let me know if any of that seems like a bad plan or something I might regret in a year or two. submitted by /u/Constructive_Entropy to r/googlehome [link] [comments]

Starting a smart home? Please don’t use Google Home

New Google Home Speaker
Long time listener, first time caller! I came across the new ‘Google Home Speaker’ on the UK Google Store this morning, can’t see that much about it on here or 9to5Google, so thought I’d share. Very vague on tech spec, leans more to Gemini and sustainability. Speaker spec/layout isn’t spoken about at all. https://store.google.com/gb/product/google_home_speaker?hl=en-GB&selections=eyJwcm9kdWN0RmFtaWx5IjoiWjI5dloyeGxYMjVsYzNSZmFIVmlYMjFoZUE9PSJ9 submitted by /u/thomasfos to r/googlehome [link] [comments]

Good bye Google home as we know it.
I'm so fed up with the errors and all the miss fires. When you say "hey google turn the outside lights on" as I have for the last decade and home replies "I'm sorry I don't understand", if I have to hear that one more time for something so simple I'm gonna break something. They have infested all my equipment with that system that so far has done nothing for me except screw up my computer not to mention it's incredibly annoying! I wish I could quarantine this invasive entity and uninstall it. I wish I could figure out how to get that thing out of my equipment. I ordered all new equipment from Amazon and as soon as I get my system up and running, I will be pulling the plug on google home and crossing over to Alexa+. I'm sick and tired of them releasing great new apps only to watch them cannibalize features (Voice) to use in something else. Is there any question how much distain I have for google right now? Went out past 10 for once, but I couldn’t open Google maps to get home.
I have a daily time limit at 10:00 pm for basically all apps, forgot about it when I went somewhere new (senior/junior prom of all nights) and stayed past 10, and when I tried to open google maps to get home, this showed up :( submitted by /u/-Hi_how_r_u_xd- to r/Wellthatsucks [link] [comments]
