Yeah, always made me roll my eyes when people would say that. If you're doing keto, one large coke from McDonald's contains more carbs than a person on keto diet has in 5 days, just that one drink. I generally do low carb, so I drink diet soda only (actually i'm a diet Coke addict).

The Truth About Keto: Pros & Cons (After Losing 34kg)
I lost 34 kilograms using keto.this isn’t coming from someone who failed the diet or gave up early. Keto worked for me. But now that I’ve stopped doing it, I can finally give you a completely honest breakdown of the positives and negatives — based on real experience. Because keto can be incredibly effective… …but it’s not perfect. Quick Background If you’ve seen my previous videos, you’ll know I lost 34kg in about six months. And keto played a big role in that. But I’ve actually used keto multiple times over the years. And every time I followed the same pattern: Lose weight quickly Feel great Then eventually regain it So after doing keto for years, I’ve seen both sides of it. The Positives of Keto Fast Fat Loss One of the biggest advantages of keto is how quickly the weight comes off in the beginning. You lose: Body fat Water weight And that early progress is very motivating. Appetite Control Keto made it much easier for me to control my hunger. Because: High-fat foods are filling Blood sugar levels stay stable I wasn’t constantly thinking about food, which made it easier to stay in a calorie deficit. Simplicity Another thing I liked about keto is that it’s simple. You remove: Most carbs Sugary foods Processed snacks That alone eliminates a lot of bad eating habits. Structure & Discipline Keto helped me build discipline. It forced me to: Plan meals Be consistent Stick to a routine And those habits helped me lose a large amount of weight. The Negatives of Keto Hard to Sustain Long Term This was probably the biggest issue for me. Cutting out foods like: Rice Bread Fruit Potatoes can work short term… But long term, it can feel restrictive. And every time I stopped keto without a plan, I ended up regaining weight. Lower Training Performance (For Me) Once I started training seriously in the gym, I noticed: Lower energy Weaker workouts Less endurance I could still train, but I didn’t feel like I was performing at my best. Social Limitations Keto can make social situations harder. Eating out, events, or even family meals can become restrictive. And over time, that can make it harder to stick to. Fear of Carbs This is a big one. After doing keto for a long time, I developed a mindset where I saw carbs as the enemy. I genuinely believed eating carbs would make me gain fat immediately. But when I reintroduced carbs, that wasn’t the case. My Honest Verdict Keto works. There’s no doubt about that. It helped me lose 34kg, and for fat loss it can be a very effective tool. But the key thing I’ve learned is this: 👉 The best diet depends on your goal. For me: Keto was great for losing weight But not ideal for my current goal of building muscle and improving performance Video:https://youtu.be/bpwomPRiYso?si=KvnowvIBRtfyq-Mi https://preview.redd.it/n7234wsuy4vg1.jpg?width=850&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59da91930423def658aa0a97a557dd695f18288d submitted by /u/Ketogenic-Marlon to r/Health_Diets_Gym [link] [comments]

Reflections after 1 month of keto. This diet is amazing
Male, 27 years old, 5'10'' and 180 pounds So I hopped on keto about a month ago. I was at my wits end with my anxiety. It was getting to the point where it was almost too much to handle. I was on antidepressants from age 19-20 during my first bout of anxiety and depression. While the meds worked, the side effects totally messed me up and even to this day, there's some side effects I never quite recovered from. But my anxiety was getting so bad that despite all of that, I was heavily considering hopping back on antidepressants. One day, after a particularly bad anxiety attack while driving, I came across a guy named Dr. Chris Palmer who was interviewed on Dr. Mark Hyman's channel. He talked about keto as a treatment for mental health problems. I really didn't want to go back on antidepressants, so I figured I would give keto the old college try. I'm so glad that I went through with it. I have been keeping my carbs at 20g per day or less. I lost a TON of weight. When starting a month ago, I was 200lb, today I weighed in at 180. My face looks thinner and I don't have a gut anymore. i've incorporated a little intermittent fasting into this as well and I think that definitely helped things. My mental health has also improved to the point that I am no longer considering antidepressants. The combination of keto and therapy has been amazing. I no longer struggle with brain fog, I have a pretty steady energy throughout the day. What's also fascinating is that unless I have a particularly big meal, I no longer get food coma after eating. I can have a meal and immediately go about some task. I walked an hour yesterday and honestly didn't feel winded at all. I'm not going to say this diet is a cure all that's going to make everything in life amazing. But man, it sure has taken care of a lot of problems in my life. My goal is to get down to about 160 pounds. This is about the weight I was at 19 years old on the eve of when I started antidepressants (this was one of the most disheartening side effects I went through). I imagine at some point in the next 2-3 months I will be there. Thanks for reading! This diet is amazing. Eating any other way is honestly nuts to me. submitted by /u/GarthBrooksFan_ to r/keto [link] [comments]

My Experience: After years of keto, it seems like it's no better than any other diet.
The first time I did keto (2021?), I didn't really worry about calories. I just eliminated bread, pasta, sugar, and just about all carbs except for green vegetables and things like that. I started off with dirty keto and just ate wherever I wanted regardless of fat or calories. I lost over 20 pounds. Later, I switched to clean keto (and also ate MAHA, eliminating processed foods, artificial ingredients, seed oils, etc), but still had very low carbs and still did not worry about calories. I lost another 10 pounds. So far so good, but after that 10 pounds (I was now at 195, down from a high of approx. 223) was never really able to lose any more weight. Still, even though I wasn't at my ideal weight I was close enough that I just continued to eat this way maintaining, but not losing, weight for the next three years. I then got tired of not being able to lose any more weight... so I cut calories, down to about 1700-1800 and over a period of five or six months I did lose another 5 pounds. But then I stabilized at about 190 and was never able to lose another pound. Of course, at ~1800 calories, and being 6'3", I was hungry all the time so after months of that, I tried to go back to just my original clean keto, eating, but without obsessing over calories, and now I gained about 6 pounds. So, i'm back to starving myself at 1800 or less, and being hungry all the time. (i've tried every variation, partial fasting, no fasting, big breakfast, smaller other meals, big lunch, smaller other meals. 2 meals a day, etc. nothing works). I have also tried having a "cheat day" once every 2-3 months, as some say that can kick me out of starvation mode (something I might be in?) but that never does anything but gain me a pound of actual weight - and three or four pounds of water weight that i lose over the next week.) I know any post that even hints at being critical of keto gets downvoted into oblivion, but i am so tired of not being able to lose weight on a diet specifically designed to help people lose weight, that I decided to say f*ck it, and just post anyway, maybe ONE person on here can solve this for me (ideally with something other that "just reduce calories even more" as thats obviously, but doing so doesn't address the issues that keto is supposed to help with, especially that its supposed to keep you feeling satiated and keep you from going into some sort of low-energy starvation mode). So really, after years of keto, it seems like it's no better than any other diet. Unless I drastically reduce calories to the point where I'm hungry all the time I won't lose weight. And I don't really wanna live that way. And yes... I am guessing fat does reduce hunger more than just carb collies, and I do enjoy habing stable blood sugar and glucose (and all my tests come out normal and healthy) - but if the new rules for me losing weight mean only eating 1800 or a bit less if i want to actually lose weight, I can probably just eat normal like everyone else, and perhaps not be so hungry, so often? So, although keto helped to lose that initial 20 or 30 pounds it doesn't appear to be a lifestyle option if I want to get my weight down to my ideal weight of 180 pounds. (i'm scared to look at the scale, but guessing I'm at around 194 or so these days). I do have a tall lean bill, but I have a gut, a pot belly, that I just can't shake. And unless I just absolutely starve myself on keto or otherwise, it looks like I'll never get to my ideal weight. And it also looks like just eating a "normal" keto diet without obsessively tracking every calorie or macro isn't really an option either, anymore. Keto as a lifestyle solution does not seem to be an option for me. I hope you have better luck than I do. But to spend years on a plateau as I have experienced repeatedly is an very unpleasant way to go through life, what keto promised never came to be for me, at least not beyond the initial weight drop, that never really continued in any meaningful way. Having said that, other than just focusing on calorie restriction, any way to lose weight while staying on strict keto (as I have been doing for years)? TLDR: Keto worked without calorie tracking for a long time, then abruptly stopped working unless calories were forced very low, which defeats the main benefit of keto. help? submitted by /u/sfxnycnyc to r/keto [link] [comments]

People don't Understand Keto
I have lost over 67 lbs since May and I'm going to 100 lbs. One thing people from the outside looking in don't understand about keto is its an all or nothing diet. You cant just get pizza one day and go about your business. It resets your diet and you have to start over. My family and friends dont understand that. When I tell them im on keto they look at me like oh you should just get on a calorie deficit and still eat what you want. They act like getting on a diet is something so simple yet its not. A calorie deficit never worked for me as I lost only 2 lbs a month when I tried that as opposed to keto where I have lost significantly more. Why do people treat keto like its just some fad diet? submitted by /u/PowerNoodles117 to r/keto [link] [comments]

Today is day 50 on keto - my results + tips
30M 6’ft - I started at 210lbs and I’m currently sitting at 185lbs after 50 days. I am currently at 18% body fat and my goal is 180. I intended on doing this for 75 days so if I hit my goal I’ll continue and see if I can get to 170. This is my routine that has given me success. 1-One meal a day. I eat once a day at 7PM. This works for me because I never have eaten breakfast and I won’t spend $15 for lunch at work. 2-Exercise. During my lunch I walk for 50 minutes and average 3Miles every day. I have an office job so this little bit adds up and burns extra calories. 3-Diet. When I do eat I make sure it’s submitted by

If you are thinking about KETO read this.
Fuck most of what you read. Fuck the wiki on the side-bar (but seriously do read it at some point). And fuck your weight. People overcomplicate this diet. Cut the gat-damn carbs and up the gat-damn fat and protein. That's LITERALLY IT!!!! My biggest problem before I started was I was a CONSTANT snacker and had a sweet tooth. After starting this diet I realized I was never satisfied. I WAS ALWAYS FUCKING HUNGRY. Fat makes me not snack. If my fat count (I generally get mine from meat so I get my protein) is low I feel the need to snack. As long as I feel full, I do t snack. Trust me when I say this, all you need to succeed is meat, cheese and green veggies. My mom is a pastry chef and culinary arts instructor. I grew up into my early 30s with the biggest fucking sweet tooth in the entire damn galaxy. If it's a baked confection, I will like it. This diet doesn't have to suck or even be expensive. I come from a father that cooks literally everything on the grill so picked up a few things. I have tons of meat ready to go. I do tons of smoked pulled pork bc it's cheap as fuck even if it isn't on sale. I buy a brisket occasionally. I make meatballs in bulk with 80/20 Ground beef (probably the cheapest and has a high fat count) mixed with ground italian sausage, I'll eat them with an egg for breakfast and microwave veggie for lunch. I buy lunch meat from the Walmart deli ( salami, roast beef and pastrami) and I'll wrap it over a mozzarella cheese stick (0 carbs btw) for a snack. This shit is cheap AF compared to the processed packaged shit I used to buy. Let me put it this way, generally a thing of decent ice cream, or little debbie cake or package of chips ahoy (fuck I love those) is about the same as some deli meat. Throw the fucking bullshit out if your house if you can. If you are like me[I am the only one in my house on this diet (wife and three young boys)] and can't throw everything out, carve a section of the pantry for your stuff. I have a shelf dedicated to my stuff. My shelf is eye level when I open the cupboard or pantry door bc I want it to be the first thing I see. Not the sweets or carbs. And for ducks sake, get a Costco membership if you can (US only). Costco is a Ketoers playground. They have all kinds of delicious shit that I would enjoy even if i wasn't on keto. If you doubt me, go to one and see. They will let you walk the store with our signing up. They have all kinds of shit listed as keto friendly. Just read the fucking label. One tip I have is to google stuff or search the various sub-reddits dedicated to keto. Want a pizza??? There's a keto version. Craving fried chicken??? Keto version (seriously I just made the top google result like 3 days ago, twas amazeballz). Love I've cream, there is a fucking keto ice cream (but don't eat the entire damn thing. Chances are you have a sweet tooth that less than1/3 a pint will curb. Then eat more fat to feel full if necessary). Seriously this diet isn't fucking hard. I've lost more weight than I have in any other diet and I have more energy than I know what to do with (fucking finally). Also, I know there might be spelling errors, but IDGAF bc I'm on mobile and drinking bourbon (neat of course) bc you can do that on keto. In fact there is an entire sub-reddit dedicated to drinking on keto. TLDR: Trash the bullshit, read the label, eat the fat. submitted by /u/aStinkyLoad to r/keto [link] [comments]

The keto diet is killing you.
Your coffee with a extra stick of butter is not good for your health long term. It will build up in your arteries and it will kill you. Intaking cholesterol will in fact raise your cholesterol which also raises your chances of heart disease. A keto diet is not the only solution to lose weight. UPDATE : I made a basic visual representation of foods that are part of the Keto diet.
https://i.imgur.com/FcPXHAv.jpg Hello! I updated the flawed previous image!Sadly, as i am not a graphic designer in any shape or form, i could not foresee the many problems i encountered. This lead to the final image being a bit hard to read, but oh well. I sank 15 hours into it, and redoing everything would take the same amount so, this is it for now. I like to believe that i took the advice from the previous thread and fixed the problems that it had. It became a more informational and more correct image, but then again i am repeating myself, it became hard on the eyes and a bit complex. Also, with the introduction of categories, the text became harder to read (yet still readable on modern displays). During the making of this, i noticed that the site i used for the nutritional information probably isn't the best choice, but i hope and believe that it is close enough for it to not matter. Anyways, its resolution is 12,000 x 7,000 so zooming shouldn't be a problem. I will provide a link to the full image (40mb) in the comments as posts get tagged as "spam" if they have more than 1 link in them. I hope that you like it and find it useful despite its flaws! Edit : :OOOOOO I forgot to rearrange the chinese cabbage. Since there are like 3 different types, i summed them up between raw and cooked and i got a new value. Then i forgot to move it and now the carbs go from 2,1 -> 1 -> 2,7 . Ooft. Edit 2 : The grams of carbs are *net carbs*.Edit 3 : I should've added a flame symbol next to the meat category + possibly consider making a version with grams of protein/fat instead of %.Also, obligatory thank you for the silver and gold. Not really sure what they do but hey! Thanks again! Edit 4 : This is not an "eat only these" guide. Its purpose is to cover the basics. I might have missed a thing or two but i will never be able to fit every food in it. You can always check the nutritional values of items you like but are not in this image. Also, the values are not per serving size, they are per 100 grams across all items. Yes, for example, you arent supposed to eat 100g of nuts, but you can always calculate from the numbers i have provided. 100 grams are 0.220lbs. Edit 5: Thank you to all for the kind words! I try and respond to the more interactive comments but upvoting really isnt enogh for the people who are thankful. Thanks to you for taking the time to check this out and write me a comment! Cheers! Edit 6 : The eggs' values for protein and fats % are reversed. There is a possibility that there are 1-2 more items that have the same issue. It is not a gigantic problem, but i will fix them and post an updated picture with other small tweaks needed to be done. Sorry for the inconvenience! submitted by /u/Nathraichean to r/keto [link] [comments]

The Keto Diet is a very low carb, high fat diet that has a lot of misconceptions and can be daunting to try, so I made this BEGINNERS GUIDE explaining what it is, WHY to do it, how to go about it and my personal experience with it (including progress pics).
I recently published a comprehensive guide for people who have never heard of the keto diet or want to know more. This was very well received on /r/keto and I'm sure /r/fitness would benefit as well from this information because diet is one of the most powerful and effective changes we could make to manage our health. I tried to do my best to make sure I portrayed this diet in a responsible, well-rounded manner with all the pros/cons so here goes: Link: All About the Keto Diet: A Beginners Guide Edit: The post was removed due to some self-promotion rules. SO I must adhere to them by probably summarizing the content of a 9000 word article. Okay so here goes: What is the ketogenic (keto) diet? The ketogenic diet is not intended to be a temporary diet for weight loss, although it works great for that, but it is more of a lifestyle change where you consistently and drastically reduce the amount of carbs you ingest. It not only makes you burn fat for energy (more on that below) but helps you become very aware of how rampant and ubiquitous carbs are in this day and age. Why is it called ketogenic? The word ketogenic is made up of two words: keto- and -genic. The prefix “keto-” is short for ketones. The suffix “-genic” is the same as genesis, which refers to “the creation of something” So the word ketogenic literally means the “creation of ketones.” Ketones are created from the break down of fat for energy when the body doesn’t get enough carbs. When the body is creating ketones, it is said to be in a state of ketosis where fat becomes the main source of fuel for energy rather than sugar (glycolysis). What the fuck are ketones? Ketones are like water-soluble fat molecules that can cross the blood-brain-barrier and provide energy for the brain. There is this myth where people say that you MUST eat carbs because the brain can only survive off carbs or glucose. What they don’t know (or conveniently forget to mention) is that the brain operates perfectly on ketones as well. Think of them as the 4th macronutrient after carbs, protein and fat. How is ketosis achieved? Ketosis is achieved by practicing strict carbohydrate restriction consistently. The general limit is about 25-50grams of net carbs a day which is far lower than the typical 200-300grams most people ingest per day. (Net carbs are carbs minus fiber.) Those carbs must be replaced with healthy fat sources. It takes a few days for ketosis to actually occur because you have a glycogen supply to get through initially, but one can reach ketosis faster if they exercise. Note: One can also reach ketosis if they starve themselves completely of all foods, but that is not ideal or recommended. What we're after is not starvational ketosis but nutritional ketosis which is achieved in the same fashion by simply restricting carbs. What are the benefits of being in ketosis? The promises of a ketogenic diet are quite impressive: Helpful for metabolic syndrome (obesity) and preventing diabetes Increased meal satiety and appetite blunting. This diet is more satiating than a low-fat diet and tends to makes it easier to avoid caloric overconsumption. Greater rate of fat loss due to state of ketosis rather than glycolysis. Note: You literally become a fat-burning machine. Reduction or complete elimination of Type-2 Diabetes (Reduction in insulin resistance) Reduction or complete elimination of hypertension (high blood pressure). Improved lipid fat profile: LDL (the bad cholesterol) particle size increases which is a good thing. (The smaller ones cause more damage.) The SIZE of LDL particles may be more important than concentration of LDL cholesterol. Recent studies have shown independent relationships of levels of LDL size to risk of heart disease. Prevention of various cancers and reduction of cancer growths. The mitochondria of cancer cells are damaged and require 200x the normal amounts of glucose to replicate at rapid rates. They cannot utilize ketones and cannot survive in ketosis without the presence of excess glucose. Possible treatment for Alzheimers. (another study) Possible treatment for Parkinsons Improved memory for older adults Reduction or complete elimination of chronic systemic inflammation. A ketogenic diet has profoundly anti-inflammatory effects. Improved cardiovascular health Very high muscle-sparing effect. (Muscle loss is mitigated in ketosis even at a caloric deficit!) Proven treatment for epilepsy, more effective than current medications without the side effects. You can extrapolate that if it’s helping reverse the diseased conditions of people with Type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and so forth, that it may PROACTIVELY help those of us who are not afflicted by those conditions and want to avoid them! Before I continue: The ketogenic diet is NOT a panacea The truth is that there is not a single, perfect diet that works for everybody. In regards to this diet specifically, Dom D’agostino says that this diet is excellent for ~70% of people out there but ~30% of the population does not respond well to this diet. Btw, Dom D’agostino is the expert that originally got me hooked to trying keto. He calls ketones the 4th macronutrient in this podcast with Tim Ferris. Weight loss is NOT guaranteed on keto. You still need to be wary of your total intake of calories and counting your calories/macros is recommended until you figure out the diet. But after a lot of experience, many people find the keto diet to be liberating because they are able to maintain the diet without the need for calorie counting by consistently choosing only keto-friendly foods. Why do you have to restrict the carbs so sharply? How does the body transition to burning fats for energy? I wrote a ton on that topic and I'm just summarizing here so here's a tl;dr infographic: http://i.imgur.com/HeEYexT.png So… What are carbohydrates? Carbs are sugar. Sugars are carbs. There are simple carbs (monosaccharides) and complex carbs (polysaccharides). There are also sugars found naturally in foods and extra sugars added artificially to foods. In the context of a ketogenic diet, they’re all pretty much the same because the body eventually breaks them down into their simplest forms regardless. (The carbs that you will eat will come almost entirely from veggies or nuts on this diet.) Don't we need carbs for energy? Despite your body needing to break down carbs first and foremost when they are ingested, carbs are NOT an essential nutrient. An essential nutrient is one your body needs to survive because it won’t be able to make it on its own. But your body readily creates sugar from fat and protein to regulate blood sugar levels. Many people think they need carbs to perform at their very best performance-wise, but that’s not true either. It takes a few weeks, but after someone becomes completely adapted to the ketogenic diet, they become very, very efficient at burning fats for fuel and the bandwidth or throughput within which your body can do this at is great. It’s been ingrained in us that we need carbs to survive, or perform at our peak as athletes. We see sugar as energy. We see athletes drink Gatorade, so we think we can’t perform at our best without it. We almost rely on it as a crutch. But when you’re keto-adapted you are not chained to the hypoglycemic rollercoaster. I'm only a quarter way through the article and it's only summarized the key points but the rest of the article talks about What's wrong with carbs Which foods are high in carbs: all grains/bread, rice, pasta, cereal, starchy veggies, potato chips, vegetable chips, pita chips, cookies, crackers, ice cream, pudding, cakes, donuts, soft drinks (none of it!) and fruits/fruit juices (except berries and avocados). A rebuttal to people who say, "I like food too much." How to calculate how many NET carbs a food has (total carbs minus fiber) What to eat if you don't eat carbs? How sustainable is such a relatively restrictive diet? How do you eat out? Can you get all the proper nutrients off of it? How does one create a well formulated keto diet? Isn't this diet expensive? What are all the pros/cons of this diet? Progress pics calories in/out only: eating at a simple deficit in 2013, I lost fat AND muscle keto only: but on the keto diet, because it is muscle sparing, I lost fat AND retained muscle Again, this was only an abridged version of the whole thing. If you want to read the full article with photos and full text, go here: All About the Keto Diet: A Beginners Guide And please remember that diets are an extremely complex subject. There is no perfect diet and it's not all about just doing something for weight loss. Diet is influenced by culture, religion, social influence, family, ethics... for some it's as simply as drinking soylent and nothing more. For some, they view it through a lens of biochemistry and physiology and geek out over metabolically hacking their body. It's all about finding out what works for you. On the keto diet, I was able to sleep well and have good recovery between strength/skill training sessions and felt a constant state of mental focus (I still do, I've been keto for like 3 months straight now with 5 months total experience), so it's nice to be able to share what it's all about, in case it jives with anyone. submitted by /u/Antranik to r/Fitness [link] [comments]
