Did I overpay for 13 carat lab diamond ring?
What would you say is a fair price for my 13.09 carat emerald cut lab grown diamond ring? Specs are F/VS1, IGI certified, set in 14k yellow gold. I won in an auction for $2,850. Thanks! Edit: I won it on the auction platform Everything But The House (EBTH). The $2,850 includes $338 for fees and taxes. I’ve won other jewelry too, natural diamond earrings, necklace, loose lab grown stones, rings both natural and lab— everything with an IGI or GIA report has always been authentic and verifiable. submitted by /u/Von_Victorious to r/Diamonds [link] [comments]

my girlfriend told me she wants a 2 carat natural diamond or she'll say no. i already bought this lab diamond ring. am i crazy for thinking shes a red flag
we've been together 4 years. i love this woman. was ready to propose. i already bought a ring. 1.2 carat lab grown diamond. beautiful stone. spent $2400 on it which is a lot for me. i was proud of it honestly. thought she'd love it. then last week she sent me a pinterest board of what she wants. fine. normal. but then she sat me down and said she wants a minimum 2 carat natural diamond and that lab diamonds are "not real" and she would be embarrassed to tell her friends she has one. so the ring i already bought. the one sitting in my drawer right now. she would reject it. not because its ugly. because its lab grown. a 2 carat natural diamond in the specs she wants is like $15-20k. i told her that and she said "well what about financing." she wants me to go into debt for a stone that her friends will approve of. i suggested moissanite as an alternative. she cried. i suggested a 1 carat natural. she said her coworker just got 1.5 and she doesnt want to "feel less than." so the ring isnt about us. its about competing with her coworker. its about what her friends will think when she holds her hand out. i brought up that lab diamonds are chemically identical and nobody can tell the difference on her hand. she said "I would know" and that it would "feel cheap." i have a $2400 ring in my sock drawer that i was excited about. now i look at it and just feel stupid. am i crazy here. we're about to start a life together and the first major financial decision is her asking me to spend 20k or go into debt so her ring beats her coworkers ring. what happens when its the house. the car. the kids school. the vacation. i havent proposed yet. im rethinking some things. not because of the ring but because of what the ring conversation revealed about what matters to her. is this ring not enough? am i being cheap? or is this a sign of something bigger. because i cant shake the feeling that this isnt really about a diamond. submitted by /u/Zestyclose-Print-677 to r/WeddingRingAdvice [link] [comments]

Anyone regret going lab-grown instead of natural diamonds?
This might be a silly question, but I’ve been stuck in my head about it. I bought a lab-grown piece a while back because it just made sense.... better price, looks the same, no-brainer. And I don’t regret it. But lately I’ve been browsing natural diamonds jewelry. I mean, just casually, I swear, and there’s something about knowing it’s rare and formed over time that feels different. Now I’m thinking about getting myself a small natural piece as a milestone gift… and wondering if I’m overthinking this whole thing. If you’ve had both, do they feel different to you long-term? Or is a diamond just a diamond at the end of the day? submitted by /u/Mental-Divide7787 to r/jewelry [link] [comments]

Lab vs natural diamonds - what did you choose?
Shopping for an engagement ring and torn between lab-grown and natural diamonds. Rare Carat has both options and the price difference is significant - could get a much larger lab diamond for the same budget. My girlfriend hasn't expressed a preference but I know some people have strong feelings about this. For those who've bought recently, what did you go for and why? Does anyone actually care about lab vs natural once it's on your finger? Quality/appearance seems identical from what I've researched. Really appreciate all the input! Still weighing my options but here's what I've learned: The quality/appearance truly is identical - even jewelers can't tell the difference without equipment. The main consideration seems to be personal values (tradition vs. sustainability/price) rather than anything visual. I've been using Rare Carat to compare options and the price difference is wild - I could get a 2ct lab diamond for the same price as a 1ct natural. That extra size might be worth more to us than the "natural" aspect. Leaning toward lab/natural but still thinking it through. Will update when I decide! Just found out my engagement ring is cubic zirconia instead of lab grown diamond
My now-fiancé and I had my engagement ring custom made through a small jewelry business in Grand Rapids, Michigan (4.8 stars with 822 google reviews). The process was great. The woman we worked with was so nice and communicative. I wanted a replica of a 1950s ring I’ve always loved. The design featured a ruby center stone, surrounded by lab grown diamonds, and two opals, all set in 14k gold. The price reflected the materials, and we both knew the opals could be fragile, but our jeweler assured us she’d handle repairs anytime. I got engaged in December 2024, and the jeweler sent a nice follow-up email in January congratulating us and sharing details about where the gems were sourced. She reiterated that I could always reach out for repairs. Fast forward to August 27th this year. One of the opals fell out. I emailed her that day, and she replied on September 3rd saying it would be a quick fix (5-7 days). She sent a return label the next day, and I shipped it immediately. After that, I emailed weekly hoping for any sort of update but heard nothing until October 10th, when the ring suddenly arrived back in the mail. No communication, just a bubble mailer with a crushed ring box inside. The opal had been fixed, but one of the “lab diamonds” had fallen out. With the lack of response, the terrible packaging, and the missing stone, I decided to take the ring to two local jewelers for written assessments. Both told me the “lab-grown diamonds” were actually cubic zirconia- and one said they might even just be glass. The “ruby” is a red sapphire. The opals are lab-grown (which I can live with at this point). I’m not sure if I’m asking for advice or just sharing this as a warning. pls get your jewelry appraised by a third party, especially custom pieces. I didn’t do that, and now I’m stuck trying to figure out what my options are since we paid by debit card over a year ago. TL;DR: Got my engagement ring custom made by a well rated small business. A year later I took it to a couple local jewelers only to find out my custom ring had all cheaper gems than what we agreed on and paid for (ruby was actually a red sapphire, lab diamonds were actually cubic zirconia, and the opals were lab grown). submitted by /u/kjpace97 to r/EngagementRings [link] [comments]

If lab grown diamonds have no resale value, then why are they still thousands of dollars?
I guess I’m wondering why lab grown diamonds are expensive when you buy them from jewelers if they “lose all value” after purchase. This post isn’t about the concept of a diamond as investment, I don’t care about that. It’s more of a curiosity thing. submitted by /u/Responsible-Book2625 to r/Diamonds [link] [comments]

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made
Lab-grown diamonds are made using one of two processes, High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), to replicate natural diamond formation. Both methods start with a tiny diamond seed and apply extreme heat and pressure or superheated gases to encourage carbon atoms to attach to the seed, growing a diamond over several weeks. The resulting diamonds are real, with the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds: https://share.google/9ERMvbIzLImHwlp5G Video: https://youtu.be/xO4KnHCfjLQ?si=xnjqeN8bF-1WbZU3 submitted by /u/Zee2A to r/STEW_ScTecEngWorld [link] [comments]

Jewelers are freaking out about lab growns and it’s been fun to watch
They are so out of touch with what the general populace wants and are in such denial. Give this article a read and see what they are saying about the lab customer base. https://myemail.constantcontact.com/How-can-we-SAVE-Natural-Diamonds.html?soid=1103610693025&aid=_cospCuJB34&fbclid=IwQ0xDSwLH6CRleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHgLu4_lzCm89_HMhHfoAunhJAHt_MlDhrf9RBeMZbqpnmDlbC-Ekr04uJs3A_aem_rTq2WKNx37vDTWBB9-tYvA I would never buy a natural stone at this point, just on principle. Lab-grown diamonds have helped diamond prices plunge 60%, and former monopolist De Beers is in crisis mode. One day asteroid mining will do the same for gold.
Diamond prices are down 60% since a 2011 high, and they are still falling. It's not all down to lab-grown diamonds, demand is down too, especially in China. No one can lab-grow gold yet, so its rarity and scarcity protect its value, but that will end too. It's just a question of when. China launched an asteroid touch-down mission this week, which will make it the 4th country/region to do so, after Europe, the US & Japan. How soon will it be feasible to mine asteroids? Who knows, but a breakthrough in space propulsion might mean the prospect happens quickly when it does. It's possible gold has twenty years or less of being high value left. Gold's fall may be more significant. It has a central role in stabilizing the value of global currencies. Reddit’s best lab grown diamond brands — who did you go with?
Hey all, I'm deep in the engagement ring search and fully leaning lab-grown at this point. Now I'm just curious — what are the best lab-grown diamond brands according to Reddit? I've seen a lot of love for Brilliant Earth, but the price is kind of brutal. A few people have mentioned newer brands I hadn't heard of before, some with really good deals. Would love to hear from people who actually bought a lab diamond online — who did you choose and why? submitted by /u/me20000 to r/labdiamond [link] [comments]

ELI5: Is there a real difference between mined or lab-grown diamonds? Is one “real” and other “fake”?
My roommate and I were casually talking about engagement rings when she said that she doesn’t like lab grown diamonds because they are not real. And when compared to mined diamonds (natural diamonds) the quality is obvious. Obviously, I don’t own a diamond and I don’t spend too much time searching it up so I cannot claim knowledge about it compared to her but…. In my mind, they are basically same. Where one is formed by conditions of environment and the other one is generated in a lab. The conditions aren’t natural but the by-product should be the same right? Would your naked eye actually notice the difference? Or when you use the diamond tester it shows significant difference? I think essentially she was basing her opinion based on the price between the two because mined diamonds are significantly more expensive (obviously bec of hazard required to acquire it) compared to lab grown. Ergo, the former must be better. Please explain it to me so I can probably explain it to her (if need arise) without causing any disagreements. TL;DR: Is mined diamond “real” diamond and lab-grown diamond “fake” diamond. submitted by /u/smokyemer to r/explainlikeimfive [link] [comments]

I’m no longer skeptical of lab-grown diamonds
I have always favored large diamonds and gemstones. While my husband and I both earn a decent living, spending $400,000+ on a ring was not in the cards for us. I was aware of lab-created diamonds, but was skeptical. First off, the pricing was all over the place. Second, I was concerned about the technology and whether the stones would hold up over time. I started lurking on Reddit and began checking into the vendors mentioned in posts. I eventually ended up on stonealgo which then directed me to Friendly Diamonds. I chose an 8.11 carat, VS2, F colored emerald cut diamond in an elegant platinum setting with a hidden diamond halo (size 4, and I apologize for the lack of a manicure…I had to postpone it because I got held up at work). It cost a little over $4,700. I also purchased a 2.3 carat emerald cut eternity band (also VS2, F-G color). It cost a little over $1,400. Don’t get me wrong, 10+ carats of diamonds is a little over the top and $6,100 is a lot of money. But every time I put these rings on I feel like I’m Liz Taylor. I really love my new rings and am no longer a lab-grown diamond skeptic. submitted by /u/Green_Ad_276 to r/EngagementRings [link] [comments]

I grow diamonds. I make custom jewelry with these lab created diamonds. I hate diamond mining but love discussing functional uses of man-made diamonds. AMA!
Proof, in the form of a diamond Snoo: https://twitter.com/ada_diamonds/status/1004735678163243008 https://www.instagram.com/p/Bjs2SKcn2eK/ I am a diamond geek, Stanford CS grad, and the accidental founder and CEO of Ada Diamonds. We pressure cook carbon into diamond at a million PSI and 1500°C, and then we make custom made-to-order jewelry with the diamonds. In addition, we supply diamond components to Rolls-Royce and Koenigsegg (maker of the fastest production car on Earth @ 284mph) Here's a recent CNBC story about my startup and the lab diamond industry. I believe laboratory grown diamonds are the future of fine jewelry, but also an important technology for a plethora of functional applications. There are medical, industrial, scientific, and computational (semiconducting and quantum!) applications of diamonds, and I'm happy to answer any questions about these emerging applications. I also believe that industrial diamond mining is now an unnecessary evil, and seek to accelerate the cessation of large-scale diamond mining. We are well past 'peak diamond' and each year diamond mining becomes more carbon-intensive and less sustainable. Edit - I'm throwing in the towel. Thanks for all the 'brilliant' questions! #dadjokes submitted by /u/Ada_Diamonds to r/IAmA [link] [comments]
