Lab grown vs real diamonds
Me and my boyfriend are a very young couple and have been discussing marriage. We both have a set career plan in place but we know we will be very poor at the start of college. He has brought up to me the topic of diamonds, lab grown vs natural. I know that lab grown is cheaper which is a huge thing. I love the idea of a natural diamond because of how it came to be but it's not a huge selling point. I'm not sure what the societal view is on either one but honestly I don't want to get a lab grown ring if it's taboo or something that gets a side eye. I want to have a ring that's beautiful, real looking, but also people ask about and don't look down on.. thoughts?? Edit: I am 17 years old and just started to utilize other social media platforms like discord and Reddit. Just because my account age is within this last week doesn't mean I'm a bot or a rage bait account. Everyone has to start somewhere. I'm not being judgmental towards either option and was not informed about the ethical issues with mined diamonds. I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to know the general consensus on either option. I just believe it to be very hypocritical to hate on a new account like you weren't all new at some point. The reason I asked reddit was to understand different opinions. Thanks. submitted by /u/TumbleweedNorth3111 to r/LabGrownDiamonds [link] [comments]

Big lab-grown diamond or smaller natural one for a proposal?
I’m getting ready to propose to my girlfriend sometime in the next few months. Well, still working out the exact moment, and now I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of engagement rings. At first I thought it would be simple: go to a jeweler, pick a nice ring, done. Turns out there are way more decisions involved than I expected. The big one I keep going back and forth on is lab-grown vs natural diamonds. For roughly the same budget, I could get a pretty impressive lab-grown diamond that’s larger and really eye-catching. But part of me wonders if a smaller natural diamonds might feel more traditional or meaningful for something like an engagement ring. My girlfriend isn’t super flashy, but she does appreciate nice things, and I want to pick something she’ll genuinely love wearing every day. I’ve also heard people say lab diamonds are basically indistinguishable now, while others still feel strongly about natural stones. For anyone who’s gone through this recently, what did you end up choosing and why? I’m probably overthinking it, but I’d rather get it right the first time. submitted by /u/supersayianmiku to r/EngagementRingDesigns [link] [comments]

Gemology: How are Laboratory-Grown and Natural Diamonds Distinguished, aren’t they “the same”? This is a common point of confusion, explanation below:
If you have two people, one from France and one from the US, you can tell who’s French by their accent. Does that make them a “fake human”? Okay, seriously now: synthetic and natural diamonds are BOTH diamonds, one is not “fake”; however, because they grew in vastly different environments their growth features differ. Lab diamonds are chemically pure: naturals have hundreds of chemical impurities, spectroscopy can reveal this. Some naturals can be chemically pure, but that’s rare. Lab diamonds grow in an orderly fashion: using certain types of fluorescent microscopy it can be discerned if a diamond’s growth pattern is random (natural), icosahedral (HPHT grown) or layered (CVD grown). This is how growing methods are determined. Inclusions: Laboratory-grown diamonds exhibit growth remnants. These can be crucible flecks (HPHT), non-diamond carbon (CVD) or needles of metals (HPHT). These features help gemologists distinguish a natural from a lab grown. They are both diamonds with different stories—earth vs human. submitted by /u/Muted_Shape9303 to r/Gemstones [link] [comments]

Lab Grown vs Natural Diamond
I went ring shopping last weekend and thought it would be simple math. Budget, sparkle, done. But standing there comparing Lab Grown vs Natural Diamond made it feel like I was accidentally choosing a personality type or a moral stance. The lab one looked basically identical to me, but then my brain kept looping on stuff like resale, tradition, and whether it is weird to care about that. I seen the price difference and instantly felt relieved, then immediately felt guilty for feeling relieved. Now it is just living in my head more than it should. submitted by /u/Parent-Witty386 to r/WeddingRingAdvice [link] [comments]

Lab vs Natural Diamond Ring
Last year my wife’s ring got lost/stolen. Luckily I have it insured and i’m in the process of looking for jewelers to get a replacement. My dilema is the previous ring was a natural 1.5 ct diamond ring but i’m now considering getting a 3+ ct lab grown diamond instead. The only thing that is holding me back is the previous ring was valued at around $7,000 and I don’t think I can get a lab diamond near that price point unless im overpaying. The other part is even if I get a lab grown diamond ring for around $4,000 I feel like I’m essentially downgrading in terms of value. I often see lab grown rings on marketplace for less than 1k so it seems silly to spend so much for a lab ring when it devalues close to 80% but the natural diamonds seem to hold more value. I feel like I would be losing money since I spent so much on the natural diamond ring got it insured to then get it replaced with lab diamond instead. On the other hand it would be nicer to get a larger ring for the price. Anyways hence my dilemma, would you in my shoes get a larger lab diamond or get another similar natural ring. submitted by /u/dmarteezy to r/jewelry [link] [comments]

How to convince myself to not want a natural diamond? Or is it worth the sentimental value?
Tl:dr: I think the process by which natural diamonds are created by the earth is beyond beautiful and symbolic. But I’m realizing it may not be worth the “sentimental” value, especially financially. Since I've started thinking about engagement rings, there's never been a doubt in my mind - I wanted a natural ring. Before I continue, I'll preface with: I know there are environmental/ethical concerns surrounding natural "blood" diamonds. I understand it's gotten largely cleaned up in recent years (maybe some companies more than others), but there is a dark dark history. I understand natural diamonds are technically finite but not scarce, that the supply is controlled to keep the illusion of rarity and also keep prices artificially high. • I understand diamonds are not an investment, precious metals are. There are a few reasons I want a natural diamond: Not sure if "crunchy" is the right word to describe myself, but I am big on natural everything (healing, products, etc.), not products that are mass manufactured/produced "artificially". I value natural resources and craftsmanship where possible, as it relates to any and all items I purchase/use. I find it so beyond incredible that the earth could produce such a beautiful item, and over billions of years. That stands regardless of how rare it is (even if there are as many diamonds as there are ants, a diamond is beautiful, an ant I can pass on). Might be a little sappy, but I think natural diamond's creations are symbolic of marriage - something beautiful built under pressure and natural from the earth. There are reasons I wanted a natural diamond, but it may no longer make sense. These are absolute lowest priority to begin with, but were a thought in the back of my mind: In case of a doomsday scenario where we had to pawn all assets, a natural diamond would be worth *something* compared to a lab grown diamond. Assuming this would be my only natural diamond jewelry piece, I'd want to be able to pass it on to my kids as a heirloom. Seems like conflicting opinions on where the diamond market is heading. Could crash and burn as younger generations value affordability and sustainability, could also start to tick up as supply (mining) goes down, and more people start to value the sentimental value the same way I do. My partner saved the money to purchase this natural diamond and was on their way to make the purchase today when I stopped them. Even though all I've ever considered was natural, I feel a guilt letting them spend a lot of money if it truly is a dumb (financial and sentimental) investment compared to lab grown. I spent the entire day watching videos on lab grown vs natural trying to change my mind. Unfortunately, everything I said above holds true; but as someone who works in finance, it's hard to let go of the financial side of things. To anyone that's been in my shoes before (adamant about natural), what did you choose, why, and do you regret it or love it? Thank you! Edit: I want a submitted by

Boyfriend and i are at odds over natural vs lab grown diamond
My boyfriend [male 32] has a deep resentment for designer and materialistic (or anything expensive) and wants lab grown moissanite or white sapphire or cz whatever but anything not as expensive and hyped as a diamond. I told him I [Female, 28] wanted a natural diamond because the earth made it over MILLIONS of years and has a rich unique history, and from what ive learned lab growns still really requires extensive energy consumption, prices are gouged, and feels impersonal since they are all so made-to-order perfect. He often makes me feel really bad about wanting a natural diamond because he says im only considering the extrinsic things not the symbolism. I told him that i believe meaning to anything is what you give it no matter what, and we are just giving meaning to different things (simulated stone versus natural). Can someone please impart their thoughts here and validate someone’s thought process??? I really feel like its something that we can each respectfully have a difference of opinions on, but he staunchly makes me feel bad about my opinion on wanting a natural stone resulting in numerous arguments, i often have to defend myself and end up in tears. Lab vs natural diamonds - what did you choose?
Shopping for an engagement ring and torn between lab-grown and natural diamonds. Rare Carat has both options and the price difference is significant - could get a much larger lab diamond for the same budget. My girlfriend hasn't expressed a preference but I know some people have strong feelings about this. For those who've bought recently, what did you go for and why? Does anyone actually care about lab vs natural once it's on your finger? Quality/appearance seems identical from what I've researched. Really appreciate all the input! Still weighing my options but here's what I've learned: The quality/appearance truly is identical - even jewelers can't tell the difference without equipment. The main consideration seems to be personal values (tradition vs. sustainability/price) rather than anything visual. I've been using Rare Carat to compare options and the price difference is wild - I could get a 2ct lab diamond for the same price as a 1ct natural. That extra size might be worth more to us than the "natural" aspect. Leaning toward lab/natural but still thinking it through. Will update when I decide! Why are other lab-grown gemstones not as popular as lab-grown diamonds?
Was thinking about this the other day and I can't claim to be a gem stone expert but I figured I'm come to the place where people know more than I do. The labgrown diamond industry has really picked up - especially in the last few years - to the point where it's easier to find LG Diamonds vs natural. I think it's great that people have so many options now. However, I'm wondering why there isn't as big of a reaction for other lab grown stones (ie. lab grown Emeralds, Sapphires, Rubies, etc.). Are the industries for this market not as mature? Is it a quality issue? Or purely just a marketing thing? submitted by /u/vp0267 to r/Gemstones [link] [comments]

Lab Grown vs Natural Diamonds - need your opinion
Hi everyone, apologies if this has been discussed before. Back in 2016, my roommate wanted to buy a lab grown diamond - to be eco friendly which reflects his love for nature - he paid $7500 USD for the stone without a ring. Today we can buy 1 carat stones - similar / better than what he got for $200 USD. I understand as technology advances, costs can come down - however I’m scared it will go below a certain price that lab grown diamonds will be like buying a keychain. While natural diamonds have been around for longer, I’m confused which one to go for. I don’t particularly care that one has been around for longer than the other, I’ve made a small pros/cons below of each - please jump in where I may be wrong or other factors to consider? Lab grown diamonds Pros: affordability / visually the same Cons: no value at all, maybe the gold band is worth more than the stone itself Natural diamonds Pros: some value retention / heirloom for next generation Cons: way more expensive / optically same as lab grown Correct me where I’m wrong as I’m new to this space and having difficulties processing it mentally, trying to decide what’s better for my to be wife. submitted by /u/grindingcoffeebean to r/Diamonds [link] [comments]

Wedding Ring Dilemma: Natural vs. Lab vs. Vintage vs. Sanity
I’ve officially entered the trenches trying to figure out what direction to go for a wedding ring, and wow, this industry is no joke. One thing I do know: GIA is king, and navigating this space is way harder than I expected. I’m pretty set on getting a custom band. I love the idea of something with character that feels a little more personal and unique. Lab vs Natural This has been my biggest internal debate. I love the idea of an heirloom ring, something that holds at least some level of value. From what I understand, lab-grown diamonds currently have no resale value, while a natural diamond loses about 35% immediately after purchase. I also get that to buy a natural diamond that actually holds value, you're likely looking at $20,000 or more. That’s a huge amount to lose if the ring ever goes missing. Sure, you can get insurance, but I also know how insurance companies can be when you actually need them. That alone makes me second guess the whole thing. I don’t have a problem with lab diamonds in terms of quality (they're chemically identical), but what bugs me is that even most jewelers won’t buy them back. So if you spend $8,000 on one, there’s a good chance it’ll be worth zero if you ever need to resell. Vintage / Old Mine Cuts Then there’s the vintage route. I don’t hate it. I’ve looked into old mine cut diamonds, but most of the sites I’ve found are hard to navigate, the certifications are all over the place, and the stones often don’t have the same sparkle as modern cuts. Yet somehow, they’re priced like modern naturals. So what now? At this point, it feels like every option has its own red flags. I’ve even briefly considered sapphires, but that feels like a whole other rabbit hole and I’m too far down the diamond path now. I’d love to hear what others ended up doing, especially if you felt like every direction was the wrong direction. What helped you decide? submitted by /u/Possible-Mongoose-61 to r/Diamonds [link] [comments]

Lab grown diamonds Vs natural diamonds - Our 2 cents
Well, this debate may be a bit old but here's our 2 cents on the subject. A jeweler will naturally stand by natural diamonds and the supposed quality and clarity and all other specs that come with it. But lets be a bit real. We are talking about sparkly stones that people buy because it is pretty. It has no other use except for aesthetics. And it should be common knowledge that diamonds are an expense and not an investment. Sure there are some stones that appreciate in value over time and there are those that have uncommon shape, size, color or other internal features that make it more expensive over time, and there are those that are bought and sold in auctions that become more expensive over time, but the diamonds that we buy as a lay man are neither the size nor the quality that are sold in such auctions. You don't have to believe everything someone writes on the internet. All you need to do is take your diamond set to a jeweler and ask them to buy it back for a price that is higher than what you paid. If you manage to do that, then I am wrong and the whole article is a lie. In this regard I speak only in terms of stones as I am fully aware as to how high the gold prices are. While some still sell the idea of buying natural diamonds as an investment, I genuinely feel that investing in diamonds is akin to investing in art. Sure, Monet, MF Hussain, Van Gogh are all good investments but none of us who are reading this article have the monetary bandwidth to 'invest' in such artwork. The art we can afford can neither be auctioned nor sold again for a higher price. Same with the diamonds. Going by the above logic, it definitely makes a lot more sense to buy a lab grown diamond over the real one. Heck, no one will even know the difference. Even the people who buy diamonds do not buy them with the intention of selling them at a higher price later on. Since diamonds have no utilitarian value and it is strictly aesthetic, might as well buy a sparkly lab grown stone. On the contrary, diamonds have the aspirational value, and like all luxury goods, have no utilitarian value. But the only counter argument to that is, that the marketing around diamonds and other luxury goods is so extraordinarily good that people believe that they are aspirational. Factually speaking, around 30,000 tons of diamonds are mined annually and although majority of them are for industrial uses, thousands of tons of jewelry grade natural diamonds are still harvested annually and it really is not that rare. The diamond industry is a monopoly / oligopoly at best and only a handful of stones are auctioned in the market each year, to keep their value abnormally high. If the marketing teams of diamond companies are convincing us to attach so much emotion to these sparkly stones, then they are truly the masters of their craft and we are nothing but sheep. So, is it time to buy another sparkly stone to make yourself feel more valued and special? to signal to others that you are successful? After all, what good is success if no one knows you've achieved it right? or you could stop falling for the spectacularly good marketing. Buy what you love, and what looks good on you. Just because something was mined by underage and underpaid bonded laborers, doesn't make it special. Remember, it is YOU, who makes the jewelry look good. Not the other way round. (PS: We are not manufacturers or sellers of lab grown diamonds. We do not deal with any precious items. This is just our personal observations on the subject since we have been present in the jewelry sector for a long time. This realization is through lived experience and some people may have a different experience) submitted by /u/Thefestivestore to r/labdiamond [link] [comments]

Lab grown or natural diamond?
Hiya!! I (26f) have been with my bf (27m) for over 5 years now and am getting excited that this could be the year we get engaged.. so I started looking at rings. I am curious on everyone’s opinions of lab grown vs natural diamonds. Do you notice when a girl has a lab grown? I feel like opinions vary. I most likely am going to get a lab grown for financial reasons and considering the carat size I want is between 2.5/3. What are your thoughts? submitted by /u/demure-mindful333 to r/engaged [link] [comments]

Do women generally care about lab grown vs natural diamonds?
The price difference is enormous, obviously. Wondering I guess if women ask questions about this? I don’t know my girlfriend’s stance submitted by /u/Creative_Spirit8147 to r/EngagementRingDesigns [link] [comments]

Should I care about the natural vs lab-grown diamond ring?
My boyfriend was saying that the ‘rule of thumb’ for ring pricing (three times your monthly salary) is silly, and I agree with him. However, the engagement ring is really important to me. I’ve been looking at rings and I think solitaire styles are timeless and beautiful. But I’m confused about the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds. For example, I see a lab-grown diamond for $5k and a natural one for $3k, both with the same carat weight. I thought natural diamonds were supposed to be more expensive? Can you help me understand this? submitted by /u/Significant_Movie814 to r/NoStupidQuestions [link] [comments]

Have attitudes towards lab grown diamonds changed recently?
My [25F] mom [58F] came to visit me this weekend to book a wedding venue and mentioned she wanted to get my ring appraised and get insurance coverage for it. I told her that wouldn’t be necessary but she pressed on and asked where my fiance got the ring and I told her VRAI, which is a store that only does lab-grown. She seemed really disappointed. I explained that I have big fingers and prefer a bigger diamond for it to look right proportionally, so in order to stay in a reasonable budget we went with lab grown. She seemed to scoff at it and I was so hurt. I just want to ask - do people from younger generations (millennial gen z) have different opinions about lab grown vs. natural. I don’t want to generalize, but I feel as though people from my mom’s generation tend to be much more traditional in their views of rings/weddings in general. I know people are entitled to their opinions and there are pros and cons to both. I just hate that I’m now rethinking the beautiful ring that I helped my fiancee pick and would hate to think that people are looking down on me for choosing lab grown. I still love my ring and will continue to love it regardless of what stuck-up family members say - I just wanted to open up discussion and see what others think. submitted by /u/dunkinteach to r/EngagementRings [link] [comments]
