Returned Macbook Air M5
That’s not the usual “Hey, I got a new Macbook” post. I got it yesterday, great one, works perfect, good looking and fast (Starlight 24Gb 1Tb). But the difference between the M1 Air 16Gb 512Gb I had for last 5 years? Negligible. I’m doing mostly my digital marketing solopreneur work on it, and after I saw the difference in performance - I couldn’t justify the purchase, so I’ve returned to Best Buy my purchase and most probably will continue to work on my Macbook Air M1 for another 2 years. It literally has no scratches, works great, and I had so many good memories with it so it was so hard to make that move. End of story 😄 UPDATE 5/29: Some things have changed. Are MacBooks worth it?
I told myself if I got accepted into my career program of choice, I’d buy a new laptop. Right now I’ve just been using my iPad but it’s pretty inefficient. Another honest Macbook Neo review.
I’ve been a Windows user for 25 years: from Windows 95 all the way to 11. I have every shortcut, every button, every setting, and every troubleshooting step memorized. But lately, I was getting tired of all the nonsense Microsoft has been slowly adding into Windows, to the point where even Windows Search barely works properly anymore. Still, it felt like a necessary evil. All of my computers (including the Dell in the second picture) were Hackintoshes for a short time, but there was always some driver issue or disappointing performance, so I eventually went back to Windows. With the Neo, I decided to finally make the switch. And I don’t regret it. This review is for people who have never owned a Mac before - what you can and can’t expect from this machine. Hardware: Yes, it’s exactly what everyone says. The build quality on this machine is incredible. The precision tolerances, the smoothness of the hinges, the trackpad (which I personally prefer over the MacBook Air/Pro ones). When you close the lid, it almost feels vacuum-sealed - there’s absolutely no flex anywhere. This isn’t plastic coated in aluminum. It’s a solid block of aluminum, and you can immediately feel it when you pick it up. Photos don’t do it justice. One downside: the rubber feet. They’re too hard and don’t provide much grip. You’ll want to show everyone how the screen opens with one hand, but there’s a real chance the laptop will just slide backwards instead. Good thing the battery is great, because if someone trips over the USB-C charger cable, it’ll probably end up on the floor. That being said, at the end of the day it’s still a metal computer. It might get scratched or dented, and it probably won’t take abuse as well as a plastic potato. I used to slam my Dell against my desk whenever I arrived late to class, and I could toss it onto the floor of my car while rushing out of my university parking lot to avoid traffic jams. And there it is - still looking ok. A Mac requires a bit more care: a good sleeve (the Tomtoc one in the last photo is highly recommended) and weekly cleaning to prevent dirt from leaving marks on the aluminum and glass. It’s not that it feels fragile - quite the opposite, it feels very well built. But I do think it requires a bit more care and attention. Whether you care about cosmetic details or not, just keep in mind that replacing the screen on one of these machines costs roughly 70% of the computer’s value - and as of today, replacement parts still aren’t really available online. The keyboard is exactly the same as the one on other MacBooks, sans the backlight. The keycaps are identical - even interchangeable. The white-ish keycaps are a good thing, as they will not show shiny spots as all the other MacBooks. I just hope they don’t yellow over time. That said, I wouldn’t call it the best keyboard in the world. The keys have a tiny bit of lateral wobble that makes them feel slightly cheap. But again: the exact same thing happens on a $3000 MacBook Pro. For 600 dollars, though, I genuinely don’t think there’s anything better. The Speakers are on another league. While not sounding as deep as a Pro, they’re great. Those small JBL speakers sound just like this laptop. I’ve never had a laptop with bass you can hear! Again, for the price there’s no direct match. Software: Oh boy. The first few days were rough. On the Latin American keyboard layout, the @ symbol is typed with Alt+Q. On a MacBook, the Alt key sits exactly where the Command key does. And Command + Q instantly closes the app with zero confirmation whatsoever. I lost entire forms just trying to type my email address. Maximizing windows on macOS also works differently - instead of simply maximizing, apps usually go fullscreen into a separate virtual desktop. Drag and drop without physically clicking the trackpad is also a bit different from Windows, and your muscle memory definitely needs retraining. That said, the entire system is designed around learning and using trackpad gestures. The same gestures that feel half-assed and painfully slow on Windows work flawlessly here. It’s like going from a stick shift car to an automatic. After about a week, you get used to it - and honestly, you start loving it. At first I installed Parallels and Windows 11 to make the transition easier. I have to say: it works PERFECTLY. Practically native performance, plus the ability to share folders and switch systems with a single gesture feels almost magical. But again, after just one week I was already 100% on macOS. Battery and Performance: I haven’t turned this machine off once since I bought it. Knowing you can close the lid and then, three days later, open it and continue exactly where you left off is incredible. I could never rely on Windows for that. I think everyone knows the worst feeling is touching your backpack and realizing it’s warm - instantly knowing your PC decided to wake itself up and drain the entire battery right when you needed it most. With the Neo, that simply doesn’t happen. And that leads perfectly into the battery life. It genuinely makes no sense. A full workday still leaves me with around 20% battery remaining. Emails, Word, Excel, and Safari all day long, with Spotify running in the background. I don’t use Photoshop or edit videos. It makes sense that YouTubers use those tasks as benchmarks - that’s literally their job. For regular people, this machine is more than enough. And no, the 8GB of RAM are absolutely not a limitation. I’ve even tested games through CrossOver, and honestly they run better than they did on my old Asus with a GTX 970M. And these were notoriously poorly optimized games: GTA IV, BeamNG.drive, and It Takes Two. What’s crazy is that they’re running through two translation layers and are still perfectly playable. I think this ended up way longer than expected, and I’m probably forgetting a bunch of things (like the excellent integration with my old iPhone). So feel free to ask me anything. But my final verdict is simple: buy it. Seriously, don’t hesitate - and get the 512GB version. Beyond the extra storage, Touch ID feels absolutely essential. You basically never type a password again. submitted by /u/saucojulian to r/MacbookNeo [link] [comments]

Macbook Neo and rich people
I have Macbook Neo for school and someone came buy today with his Macbook Pro. He sat down and then asked if I was cold while he was wearing a Canada goose jacket in a 70F library lol... Anyway he then asked to check out the Neo so I said sure. He put it next to his Macbook Pro and went through each part of the computer. He was like "yeah the screen for sure is a downgrade", "I like the keyboard on mine a bit better", "Yeah the build quality is decent but still not comparable". He kept going commenting on everything making bunch of random grunting noises and then basically just left without saying anything. So I guess when you see a Neo owner do you think they are poor, ugly, dirty, dumb, smelly or something? Perhaps just get the Air to avoid stuff like this from happening, no one thinks anything bad about that one. submitted by /u/Sphere_3N to r/macbook [link] [comments]

Returned my Macbook Neo
It was my first Macbook and i really enjoyed it, but then i realized i can order a brand new Macbook Air M4 (not refurbished - NEW) for 730.- bucks when i paid 680.- for the Neo here in Switzerland. I just couldn't justify keeping the Neo just because of the new colors when a device with significant upgrades to battery, screen, touchpad, slimness and power is just 50 bucks more... even if I have no need for more power - everything else is just so nice to have for the same price. I urge you all to look around if you're in the same position if you have M4's available. No hate for the Neo, i loved it - and i know its unfair to compare last gen prices with the newest releases. submitted by /u/averybadlime to r/macbook [link] [comments]

MacBook Neo After a Full Day of Classes
Started my first class at 11am with the MacBook Neo at 80% battery and used it through the day until 7pm, ending with 13% left. Usage was mostly basic tasks email, viewing and editing docs, chatgpt, youtube and music with brightness around 80%. Overall, the experience was great. Performance was smooth, and the 8gb ram handled everything without any lag for this type of workload. The trackpad felt a bit different not bad, just different, which makes sense since the neo uses a fully mechanical system. The speakers were fine for casual listening. All the USB-C ports are on one side, which was sometimes annoying when the wall outlet was quite far on the opposite side. Happy to answer any questions. submitted by /u/Slow_Tiger3161 to r/macbook [link] [comments]

Don't get a Macbook
I have always been a Microsoft girly. I have had HPs, Dells, the lot. I 'treated' myself to a Macbook in November 2023, and I am still struggling with it. I am gonna list my issues - please let me know if this is just me being stupid or if my brain is just wired for Microsoft. Okay, so I currently have Word open and am working on my CV. The scroll button, however, is BLURRED. I cannot click it and scroll. It just won't let me, no explanation. Just blurred off. I'll attach a photo. When I am trying to upload photos to anything or select a new profile pic, the window pops up but the edges are OUTSIDE of the screen. It won't let me drag it. I can't see the scroll bar at the side and when I click the down arrow to search and select the photo, it does this annoying click and won't let me. Nothing happens. Infuriating. My files are fucking everywhere. Trying to organise them is so difficult. Why? Why is it just so difficult to save them all in the right place and organise properly? Windows is so clear cut. Current apps are so difficult to find. I had the internet open and was working from it but then went to look for a file, came back and it was gone. Why???? Finally, the red X / yellow minimise / green widen buttons just ARE NOT THERE sometimes. What is the logic to this? How do I sort the bloody windows and make space for it all? I am infuriated today. Maybe it's stupid but if this was a Windows PC I would not have these stupid issues. submitted by /u/Normal-Whole-3464 to r/laptops [link] [comments]
