Magnesium glycinate vs citrate — which one is actually better? (sleep, anxiety, digestion)
I was advised to take magnesium for better sleep and relaxation. Plus, I sometimes get muscle cramps. I started looking into it and ran into a few challenges. It turns out there are different types. For those who’ve tried both magnesium glycinate vs citrate — which one actually helped you more? From what I gathered from the posts and replies, glycinate is better for sleep and anxiety, while citrate is more suitable for improving digestion. But I’ve also seen comments where people said glycinate didn’t help them. So now I’m confused. Which magnesium would you recommend for me? What’s the best form of magnesium reddit tends to agree on. Do you really need to choose magnesium based on your specific goal? Also, I’m curious. Have you noticed any improvements after taking any of these forms of magnesium? Did anyone notice real magnesium glycinate benefits reddit talks about (like calmer mood / deeper sleep)? How long did it take for the effects to kick in? Are there any side effects? I’d love to hear some real reviews. submitted by /u/Conscious_Match8849 to r/magnesium [link] [comments]

Magnesium glycinate vs L-threonate -- what's the actual difference and when does it matter?
Getting a lot of questions about this in my circle so thought I'd write up what the evidence actually shows, because the marketing around both forms is... enthusiastic. Why they work differently despite being the same mineral Both deliver elemental magnesium. The difference is in how they're absorbed and where they end up. Glycinate: the glycine chelate improves absorption AND the glycine itself has inhibitory/calming effects via NMDA receptor modulation. This is why glycinate specifically (not just magnesium) is associated with sleep and anxiety benefits. L-threonate: developed specifically because it crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively. The original MIT research showed it raised brain magnesium concentrations where other forms didn't, and improved cognitive performance in animal models. Human data has followed. The 2026 study worth knowing about A recent Australian RCT found magnesium L-threonate improved cognitive performance AND heart rate variability compared to placebo. The sleep improvement? Not statistically significant as a primary endpoint. This is interesting because L-threonate is often marketed for sleep too -- that appears to be glycinate's lane, not L-threonate's. Practical takeaway If you're deficient and want general health/sleep/stress benefits: glycinate is cheaper and better studied for those outcomes. If you specifically want cognitive support and have budget for it: L-threonate has solid mechanistic and emerging clinical evidence. Stack note: there's no strong reason you can't take both -- glycinate before bed, L-threonate in the morning. Different jobs, different timing. Anyone here who's run both? Curious about subjective experiences. submitted by /u/goodsuppstacker to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Magnesium Glycinate Q
I have been taking nightly Magnesium Glycinate for the past two years. I usually would lake it around 8-9pm which was a few hours before sleep. I’ve never encountered any issues. However, in the past couple weeks of taking it I moved the timing of Magnesium Glycinate to right before bed and started taking 200mg (two capsules) instead of 100mg. Since the increase in dose and timing I have started to wake up during the night around 3-4am, sometimes waking up hourly which was weird. Looking at other experiences it seems like some also have dealt with this. Should I keep taking it, decrease back to 100mg, or discontinue all together? I will say that I do benefit from it as it helps stop my restless legs at night. Side question: Does anyone have thoughts about mixing glycine with the Magnesium Glycinate. Starting at 1g and working up to recommended 3g? Thanks submitted by /u/sonictime1 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

What magnesium glycinate brand do you all take? I take pure encapsulations and I think the quality has gone down.
Have been taking 600 mg of pure encapsulations magnesium glycinate for three years for chronic migraines with success. Three months ago my migraines returned. I have racked my brain trying to figure out why. I’ve tried increasing the dose which has helped before but it no longer helps. I’m starting to think the quality of the magnesium may be to blame. I’ve read Amazon reviews indicating that the quality control is down. Some capsules look weird and the inside of the lid may have mild mold or water damage. Anyone taking this brand and notice anything similar? What brands do you all currently take and benefit from? May have to switch brands. submitted by /u/Grumpy_bonsai23 to r/migraine [link] [comments]

I finally understand why everyone won't shut up about magnesium glycinate
I was that person who rolled my eyes every time someone in here said magnesium changed their life. Sounded way too good to be true for a $15 supplement. Started taking 400mg glycinate about 6 weeks ago because my sleep was garbage and I was getting calf cramps during runs. Figured worst case I'm out fifteen bucks. Within the first week my sleep was noticeably deeper. Not just "I feel kinda rested" — I mean I stopped waking up at 3am staring at the ceiling for no reason. The cramps stopped almost immediately. But the thing nobody warned me about? My overall anxiety just… dialed down. Not gone, but the baseline mental chatter got quieter. That was the one I didn't expect. I've tried plenty of stuff that did nothing. This is the first time I've felt like a supplement actually did what people said it would. What's the one supplement that surprised you by actually working? submitted by /u/mike_thompson_inno to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

My weird experience with Magnesium Glycinate
Just wanted to share my experience with Magnesium Glycinate for the past 3 months. Long story short, I started taking magnesium glycinate 500mg (100mg elemental) to help with insomnia back in early October, and it did have a therapeutic effect at first. I’ve also noticed it also stopped my heart palpitations(happens sometimes after eating but wasn’t a big concern to begin with). My sleep gradually improved to normalcy but I’ve then continued to take it every night after researching about its supposed benefits. Fast forward 2 months later, I was becoming extremely spaced out, and found it really difficult to focus and the energy it took to keep focus was giving me eye strain(it’s as if I have to consciously keep my eyelids open). I developed health anxiety, had very short attention span, had 0 interest in anything, dwindling libido, my mind would wander, and I would wake up with anxious thoughts. Most annoyingly it gave me a constant dull pressure headache which would worsen with bright light. I didn’t notice it myself until my wife pointed out how I wasn’t really present. Now, it’s been 10 days since going cold turkey on Mg Gly, and I must say the result is pretty appalling. No more eye strain, headache 60-70% gone, can focus without much effort, health anxiety is significantly reduced, no more anxious thoughts on waking, libido returning, feeling more alive in general. Heart pals did return some day 3 of quitting but it gradually stopped after I started to snack on some nuts and dark chocolate daily. submitted by /u/Ixc15 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Magnesium glycinate wipes me out...alternative magnesium types?
I know all the benefits of taking magnesium - less anxiety, less muscle soreness, better sleep, etc. I've heard so much about magnesium glycinate, but the thing is it makes my muscles feel like jelly. I even take low doses like 60mg, 120mg, and if I take it before bed, I can NOT get out of bed in the morning the next day. It helps but makes my muscles feel too weak. I currently have extremely sore legs, aches, muscle twitching just from walking today - I think the PPI's I've been taking the past month dropped my magnesium levels. Are there other types of magnesium that are less...potent? Or less likely to make your muscles feel overly relaxed? submitted by /u/United_Chapter4097 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

My experience with magnesium glycinate
Hi everyone, I wanted to share my experience with NOW Foods magnesium glycinate. Premise: I’m not the kind of person who expects to “feel” an effect from a supplement in 48 hours. I’ve been taking supplements for 20 years..I know what to expect, what not to expect, and I don’t create placebo stories in my head. I took it for very simple reasons: muscle cramps, post-workout muscle tension, recovery. Nothing fancy, just physical needs. The problem: sudden nighttime awakenings and zero benefits for cramps Ever since I started taking it in the evening, after dinner, something really strange happened: I kept waking up suddenly, always around the same time, almost like I got startled awake. Light sleep, micro-awakenings with INTENSE jolts, and “glitchy” dreams. For months I blamed the zinc I take before bed. I stopped it.. no change. Then I stopped magnesium as well for two months. The first few days the awakenings continued… then they completely disappeared. I restarted the protocol.. the exact same effect came back. What really confuses me Despite all the hype, glycinate has done absolutely nothing for my cramps. Nothing. Zero difference. The weirdest part: the Germany test This summer I was on a one-week trip and went through a brutal tour de force: hard workouts, almost no sleep, 40,000 steps per day. And of course I didn’t bring my magnesium with me. In Germany I walked into a drugstore and grabbed the first magnesium I found: magnesium citrate. And here’s the crazy part: I slept perfectly every single night, no sudden awakenings, and absolutely zero cramps, even under that level of physical stress. submitted by /u/Hot_Landscape7345 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

What other form of Magnesium would you guys recommend aside from Glycinate?
Long story short, I'd been having some issues sleeping 8 hours due to waking up at night. I took Magnesium Glycinate and it helps to go to sleep but it's still very fragmented, still wake up at nights. I want to keep taking Magnesium because of its benefits in the brain and nervous system, it can be completely neutral towards sleep, it doesn't matter, so since Glycinate is off the table, what form would you guys recommend to take instead for general health? submitted by /u/tadm123 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Magnesium glycinate
Idk who needs to hear this, but for over a year I was taking mag bisglycinate at night, every night. About a month ago I ran out and just decided to use the bottle of mag threonate I had. I know all forms of magnesium have different uses/benefits, but I didn’t think I was that sensitive to it. However, my stats were out of control for the past month. My RHR at night was 10-12 bpm higher than usual, my HRV was trashed in the 30s, my stress charts were constant hours and hours of stress — 15 mins of restorative time if I was lucky. I actually took my ring off for a couple of days because I was so frustrated and anxious. Fast forward to this past Saturday night, I ran out of the threonate and remembered I had a bottle of mag glycinate — the data doesn’t lie and I can’t believe that it’s just pure coincidence that I got up to 4.5 HOURS OF RESTORATIVE TIME Monday. I’m honestly mindblown. My brain feels different too as far as my OCD and anxiety go. Anyways, just thought I’d share! submitted by /u/CalmAdvice1621 to r/ouraring [link] [comments]

Why is magnesium glycinate so unpredictable?
If I take it in the morning it makes me drowsy. If I take it in the evening, it can also calm me down and make me drowsy. But sometimes when I take it in the evening, it'll make me drowsy for about 15 minutes and then I'm wide awake like I drink a cup of coffee. Anyone else get these kinds of random reactions from magnesium glycinate? Edit: I want to make a few distinctions here. I'm 40 male, in good shape, Eat an insanely clean diet. Lots of organic meats, fruits, honey, etc. I ate very clean no seed oils, etc. I've been taking magnesium glycinate every morning for about 3 months. And it's confusing because I never linked it to my drowsiness in the mornings. For me, I would wake up and take the Magnesium with some other electrolytes. About 30 minutes later I would find myself tired, and I would consequently sip this electrolyte plus magnesium mix thinking it would give me more energy. ( probably led to more drowsiness) Here's where it gets weird. About four or five hours into the day I'm wired as fuck. In a sense that, I'm thankful magnesium has given me study energy throughout the day. That's cool. But then when it comes night time, I close my eyes and I can feel them wanting to stay open, even sometimes at 12:00 a.m. or even 1:00 a.m. I'm wired. I skipped magnesium glycinate one day just as an experiment. And after a few days I noticed that 1.) I got a little bit slightly depressed and emotional. It was weird. ( the emotional strange feelings came while I was doing a workout.) After my workout I felt great. I felt relaxed and a rawness that I haven't felt in a while. I also noticed when I stopped taking magnesium that at night time I got so drowsy before bed I slept and fell asleep right away and I slept really good. This leads me to a contradictory nature into which, for some strange reason magnesium glycinate is acting like both a precursor to drowsiness, but then moderate long-lasting stimulation that sometimes lasts well into the night. I've spent many months going to sleep with my mind racing at times, but realized that it was just the magnesium in my system and eventually I would go to sleep. (This is only on 200mg a day.) .. last night I had no trouble going to bed and I slept great. This was my experiment going off magnesium. Today I took 100 mg of magnesium glycinate and, it seemed to level up my emotions and give me a steady mood. But it's 1:30 a.m. and I'm still pretty moderately wide awake. So I am enjoying the stimulating mood balancing benefits of it, but I'm not enjoying the wired mind racing feeling it seems to give me sporadically, and the consistent racing of the Mind in the evening Basically, I'm enjoying the fact that at my age magnesium seems to give me some type of long-lasting underlying all day energy, but the only drawback is that it seems to stimulate me well into the evening to the point of sleeplessness. Another strange drawback is there's about an hour to 2 hours drowsiness upon initial taking of the dose. This effect actually happens even on 200 mg early in the morning like, 6:00 a.m. I don't want to get started on taking a dose in the evening which I experimented with, and found myself wide awake until 5:00 a.m. on top of being ravenously having sugar cravings for some strange reason. That night sucked. I'm going to experiment with going off magnesium for a while to see what happens. Maybe get light amounts in nutrient type of foods. Thanks for reading everybody. submitted by /u/Top-Read9300 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Magnesium Glycinate was the worst thing ever.
Hello!! I stumbled upon this subreddit and found that everyone SWEARS by magnesium glycinate. They said it helps their muscles relax, sleep, cognitive function, etc. like a silver bullet. So I bit the…bullet…and bought some mg glycinate and took it an hour before bed. Not 30 minutes later, my heart rate started going up. Strange. Went to sleep…then woke up at 4:00 AM. Tossing and turning. Hot as hell. Not a fever, but clearly lots of anxiety. Could not sleep whatsoever. It’s now the late morning and I’m finally losing the effects of it and going back to normal. To make sure this wasn’t a fluke I did this again a week apart and the same thing happened. I don’t know why. EDIT: Woah, okay this post blew up! Everyone who's new to supplements--never take them with no one else in the house or before something important. And don't take the full dose at once, go half and ramp it up to the recommended. It should go without saying but you never, ever know how your body will react so just putting that out there! submitted by /u/NouvelErmitage to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Elvanse + magnesium glycinate = Game changer!
So I guess I want to start off by saying that I’ve come to realise that everyone is very different when it comes to supplements. I’ve read countless recommendations on here before that have led me to try supplements that haven’t offered any real tangible improvement for me. That said, I’m quite taken back by the improvement I’ve seen since I started taking magnesium glycinate with my Elvanse, that I wanted to share it in case it helps anyone, and to see if anyone else has had similar experiences. But please don’t assume that you will necessarily share the same experience as me I’m currently coming to the end of my titration having titrated up to the maximum dose of 70mg. While I have to admit it has been absolutely life changing for me in terms of eliminating my binge eating, leaving my mind calmer, improving myself and improving my focus. The consistency has sometimes been a bit hit and miss, especially around my focus - some days I’ve felt a little over stimulated, while other days I’ve felt a bit unmotivated. Anyway, I recently came across a post on where someone mentioned they had been using magnesium glycinate alongside their Elvanse and that they had found that their results were much more consistent since introducing the magnesium supplement. This led me down a bit of a rabbit hole, scouring various subreddits looking for accounts of magnesium being used alongside Elvanse. It turns out there are loads of people that have found through supplementing with magnesium, that they have seen more consistent results or fewer side effects. There are even studies and articles suggesting that there could be a link between magnesium deficiency and ADHD. So I decided to give it a go with fairly low expectations. I’ve been quite taken back by the improvements I’ve seen pretty much immediately! I’m having a much deeper sleep at night, I’m getting back to sleep much quicker if woken in the night, I’m feeling much more refreshed in the morning, and most importantly of all I’m finding that the benefits I’m getting from Elvanse are much more consistent in the day (especially with my focus). I’m also finding that my side effects are much better in terms of things like headaches and irritability. I’m not sure if it’s just the fact that I’m sleeping better at night, so I’m waking up much more refreshed, the fact that magnesium can act as a muscle relaxant (relieving tension), or if I was just deficient of magnesium but I honestly can’t explain how much better I’m feeling for it. For anyone reading this who does fancy giving it a try, be a bit careful what you order. Magnesium is available in a variety of different versions, some of the cheaper forms can be a bit harsh on the stomach. Magnesium glycinate is supposed to have a high absorption rate with fewer side effects than many of the other forms. I managed to find a version that provides 102% of your recommended dose over 2 capsules, so I take 1 in the morning with my Elvanse and one in an evening (if anyone wants the details of the brand I went with, let me know) I wondered if anyone else had experimented with Magnesium and had similar results? Edit - A few people have asked which brand I used, so popping it here to make it easier for others to find. I went with Nutrition Geeks Magnesium Glycinate 3-in-1. You can order it directly from the company: https://www.nutritiongeeks.co/products/magnesium-glycinate-3-in-1 It’s available on Amazon too - https://amzn.to/3C8PDpJ submitted by /u/silvesterhq to r/ADHDUK [link] [comments]

Magnesium Glycinate for Migraines
Not sure who may benefit from this, but take Magnesium Glycinate (and maybe some Vit D if you are inside mostly) for Migraines. The research is solid and I have no idea why people don't know about the direct link between magnesium deficiency and migraines prevalence. I am a professional researcher (i.e it's my job and how I earn a living) and had to do my own research when I started getting multiple migraines per week. Magnesium Glycinate, daily, in the morning. Magnesium L-Threonate at night. Hope this helps someone. Post-edit: Some posts are correct in that I may be taking them "backwards". But my migraines tend to come under certain conditions during the day, so I take my glycinate in the mornings. I'm also a type A personality, so it helps calm things down a bit. But however you take it and whatever order, make sure you have enough in your system. Oh and yes, don't overdo it, because as one poster mentioned...apocalypse in the bathroom. Also, I didn't see very many recent discussions on this, so I just wanted to mention it. If people already know, then fantastic. My intentions were good. submitted by /u/asdklfjhw35 to r/migraine [link] [comments]

Magnesium Glycinate. WOW.
2 nights in taking 240mg around 9/10PM and I’m falling asleep within 20-30 mins and getting deeper, more restorative sleep. Beyond sleep, studies show an impact on focus and hyperactivity but I can’t quite measure any positive impact yet. I don’t know if I will be able to at all, because I’m starting magnesium and adderall concurrently. Bought the Pure encapsulations brand on Amazon per recommendations. My “brand” of ADHD has me needing quality research in order to believe and buy into certain protocols. I’m stubborn in that something I try could make a big difference but it’s not until I read enough evidence that I’m motivated to commit to implementing it long term. Please try Magnesium Glycinate!
To start off I’m a male in my 20’s, I was experiencing constant fatigue, insomnia, headaches, increased blood pressure, and anxiety. I felt like I wasn’t going to see 30, just deathly tired all the time but could never rest. I changed my diet multiple times, quit smoking, and I was already exercising for 1.5 hours everyday, but nothing was helping. I ended up trolling around here and googling some supplements that would help, after ashwagandha didn’t improve anything, I moved to try magnesium glycinate. I wasn’t someone who really believed that supplements could change my life as much as they did. The first 3 days I had the best sleep I’d seen in the past year. Headaches are almost entirely cleared and my energy levels are way better throughout the day. Almost a month strong and I’m still feeling these benefits. After looking up my symptoms there’s a very good chance I was magnesium deficient the whole time. If you’re reading this and experiencing the same symptoms please try magnesium! submitted by /u/CosmicMover to r/Supplements [link] [comments]
