We had tried everything for our daughter from routines to every type of magnesium supplement (always afraid to use melatonin) but finally just tried this. We’ve been using for a month now. 2 at 6:15 and she goes to bed by 7. She will still come to our room around 4am but no more meltdowns before bed or crying in middle of the night.

I didn't realize melatonin had side effects in some people. Be warned.
I have always informed all of my doctors that I take 3-5mg of melatonin (which was at the suggestion of a doctor). Nobody warned me about the side effects. Really bad fog and anxiety for the first 4-6 hours of the day. I beat myself up for being lazy and not getting enough work done, because I didn't know it was induced fog. I would literally buy whatever dosage they had on the shelf (they were often out) without a thought. I google everything, and it never occurred to me to research melatonin until I saw something in passing on social media. I stopped it cold turkey last month and I feel like a new person. So just a caution even though I am not a doctor: start with the smallest possible dose. And google side effects of supplements! submitted by /u/InsertCleverName652 to r/melatonin [link] [comments]

Child was given melatonin at a sleepover…
I am feeling so shocked and angry.. My son came home today from a 3 day vacation with his friend and his family. We were all talking about his time and he mentioned he’s excited to sleep in his own bed tonight as he was sharing a bed with his buddy during the trip. We asked if he was hard to sleep with and he answered with “well nobody snored and we took melatonin” The way my husband and I begged his pardon… son thought we were mad at him. Obviously not his fault. But we weren’t asked if they could give him anything… Our son has gone on this same trip annually for the past 4 years, but just this time my son has let it slip about the melatonin. I asked him if this is the only time he’s taken it, he doesn’t remember. I am feeling very irresponsible for not having a talk with him about this… never taking anything from anyone, even parents. But it just didn’t cross my mind, I didn’t think I needed to. That was so incredibly stupid of me. I can’t believe it. this is as fucked up as we think it is, right? I am so mad. At myself and at them. Sadly I had to tell my son he won’t be joining them any longer. And I’m not a confrontational person so at this point I don’t even know how to bring this up with them. submitted by /u/breeyoung to r/Parenting [link] [comments]

How much melatonin do you guys take on a daily basis?
Well, the question is pretty much self-explanatory: for those of you who take melatonin every day, what’s your dose? I take 0,299 mg, and sometimes doesn’t really work and I find myself doom scrolling until 2-3 am. At this point I’m just filling in characters to be able to post… UPDATE EDIT: Thank you everyone for your replies and comments. This community is a great resource for us! This are my take-aways from this post: Don’t underestimate melatonin Listen to your body: If something doesn’t always work, that’s not for you Magnesium seems to work better than melatonin (I also take Magtein) Science is our best way to know, for sure but the experience of people is also good to listen to submitted by /u/semifunctionalme to r/ADHD [link] [comments]

Melatonin is no joke…
I have had difficulty sleeping for the past 15 years, and my sleep phase cycle has been terrible as a huge night owl. I would literally be in bed by 9PM, but most times would be lying awake, only feeling drowsy around 4-7AM, waking up around 11-1PM. Wasting so much time. Finally decided to take melatonin, digging into it everyone stresses how 1mg is more than enough. I honestly doubted it though since most places only sell 3, 5, or 10mg. But since it was my first try I decided to cut up a pill and took around 0.75mg. Holy crap. Never thought it would work since the last 15 years I have struggled with sleep… but this stuff knocked me tf out. I got into bed and was able to sleep within 30 minutes, which I have not been able to do since elementary school. I feel like I can finally live as a functional being again. I have no problem staying asleep but have always struggled with keeping my sleep schedule in tact, so I hope to use this whenever I start slacking again. Some thing to note; i feel like this stuff wont work on people who complain they cant go to sleep but stay on their phones in bed all night, don’t “wind down”, or have huge anxiety. I think my problem was that my brain can’t shut up, and my adhd has spiraled this out of control. Worked for me since melatonin shut off my brain somehow and I actually “tried” to go to sleep. Only problem though is like everyone has mentioned in past threads, it works a bit too well and it does make you oversleep. I went to sleep at 9PM and finally woke up at 7AM. But it’s a 100% better than whatever sleep schedule I’ve had before. It even worked for me when I woke up 1PM! Which means I’ve only been active for 8 hours!!!! Which is crazy to me!!!!! Next time though I’m going to have to take a lower dose lol submitted by /u/throwaway-9566 to r/sleep [link] [comments]

quick reminder that melatonin isn't a sleep aid
many people treat melatonin like a sleep aid without understanding the purpose of it and when it doesn't work, it'll be said that melatonin is straight up snake oil because it didn't work for them. that's because melatonin is not supposed to be a sleep aid! generally melatonin works for people who have jet lag or trying to adjust to a new sleep schedule; and if you have insomnia, it can work if the cause of it is because you have an inconsistent sleep schedule or nearing that age where you don't sleep as much. however, if you have insomnia that comes from stress/anxiety, hyperthyroidism, vitamin deficiency, sleep apnea, etc. then melatonin isn't gonna fix it. also, if you're gonna take it, make sure to take it in small doses. most of the time, anything over 1mg wouldn't work and sometimes have the opposite effect. submitted by /u/FinancialLeader772 to r/insomnia [link] [comments]

Melatonin works, you’re using it wrong (a short guide)
For years, I thought melatonin didn’t work for me. I tried it over and over again and got zero results. that was, until I learned how to use it. Firstly, less is more. Taking more than 3 mg will actually disrupt your sleep. You want to take about 2.5 mg. Secondly, you have to take it two hours before bed. If you take it 30 minutes before bed, it will also disrupt your sleep. Third, you have to use it as a circadian rhythm reset. It doesn’t work as a sedative. It’s more just for if you can’t fall asleep at the right time. So if you wanted to fall asleep at 11, you would want to take it at like 915 or 930 at the latest. If you follow these steps and use it every night at the same time, it will work. it will at least reset your schedule even if it doesn’t totally fix things. It may not work in a single use, but consistency is key. submitted by /u/dentopod to r/insomnia [link] [comments]

Someone please explain to me why taking melatonin every day is bad
I've been using it every day for months. I feel regulated and good, though I get anxiety sometimes. From what I read online you shouldn't use it every day, but I don't fully understand why. I get a predictable amount of sleep, and no weird druggy feelings. Sometimes I try other herbal concoctions like good day calm. Those help me sleep but make me feel drugged out. I have trazodone--ugh I feel like a drugged out zombie the next day. Or on the flip side, please explain why its Good to take every day and your experience with that! Edit to add: I take abt 1 mg a night. I take a 3rd party tested brand. I haven’t built a tolerance and I sleep really well and through the night. The only issue is I actually have a hard time waking up but as an insomniac that feels good to me. I have found that taking it 3 hours before I want to sleep works best. Why I wondered if it’s not a good idea to take every night is lately my anxiety was building up a lot throughout the day. Also the having a hard time waking up thing. I went to sleep without it and last night for the first time in months and my insomnia was back. It was hard to get to sleep and stay asleep and woke up early. submitted by /u/Spiral_eyes_ to r/sleep [link] [comments]

Melatonin is a cheat code for fixing your sleep schedule
I was sleeping at 3:30am the past 2 weeks. Last night I was able to sleep at 12am. 2 hours before that, I ate 1 tablet of melatonin. The recommended dose was 2. It had L-theanine for relaxation. I just woke up at a 7:30am instead of 12pm like usual. The biggest part in fixing your sleep schedule is sleeping early. Use melatonin sparingly to help you. It's a cheat code. Edit: People recommend 1 mg max when starting off. Also take it 5 hours before bed: https://www.uhhospitals.org/blog/articles/2018/03/enter-sandman-the-truth-about-melatonin Also more tips on sleep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSbg1vIkpHg submitted by /u/whatismynamepops to r/productivity [link] [comments]

AITA for kicking out sister’s friend over melatonin?
*edit to update: hi. Sorry this blew up more than I expected it too. First thing I want to address. She does now in fact have a safe place to go, that is away from my children. Second, I agree. I could have done things differently. But upon watching the video of when I asked her, I was very calm, didn’t have a raised voice, and did not come off as treating at all. To those saying that you can’t be angry while calm, yes. Yes you can. Third: I was very angry about the giving of melatonin, but now that I’ve calmed a bit, what I’m most angry about is giving my child something to try and sedate her, so that she (sam) could sleep longer because she didn’t feel good and is tired. Which I do in fact have her admitting on camera. She has told us no to baby sitting multiple times, which is okay. I do not use it as a tool to control. I promise. She is able to come and go as she pleases, if she needs money or anything I didn’t hesitate to help out because of my own personal up bringing. Sam does in fact know that it is a night time only thing, recommended by my child’s doctor, as she recently watched my child over night (for the first time ever.) while my husband and I took one night away. Not a weekend. Not a week. Not even a full 24 hours. Just one night. Fourth: looking back through our footage, I have caught more instances of this on the times I completely left the home with her watching the kids. I have two of the tamest children. Do they get wild occasionally, yes. But no matter what, my child should not have been given anything under the thought it would help induce sedation. Fifth: I had full hands walking out of the house today, and just asked her to lock and turn the alarm on. I didn’t think it was a hard task, but I take responsibility for not doing it myself. Six: somewhere I explained in a comment that when I came in to use the restroom, I was angry about the door situation. I also originally assumed that they were watching a movie or something in her room, which they have done plenty of times. I should have clarified that I didn’t realize she was putting them to sleep until I watched the camera, and that when I came back home for the 2nd time is when I actively caught her in the act of sleeping. When hubs and I left this am, we had fully woken her up and she was having a FULL conversation with us before we headed out the door, she was sitting on our couch. I’m sorry this is long and confusing. I was angry and in fight or flight when writing this. Mostly worried about my child. For things I have done wrong, I will accept responsibility. 100%, but I will also not put my children’s health and safety at risk. Ever. Hi there, I apologize in advance because I’m so angry I’m shaking. My (f26) and husband(28) took in one of my little sisters friends (f18, just shy of 19). Let’s call her Sam. Sam has been with us for almost a full year, and we’ve been taking care of her. We also have two small children (3 &1) who live in our home as well. We occasionally ask Sam to watch the kids for us when we have errands to run or want a date night etc. She graduated high school in May, and did not have a job over the summer nor paid any sort of bills, so we didn’t think it was a huge ask considering we pay everything. Cellphone, shoes, clothes, anything she needs. We just finally trusted Sam enough to watch the kids over night so we could go out of town to celebrate our anniversary. Everything went fine and we returned home with no issues. Or so we thought. Today, I had some errands to run while husband went to work, so I asked Sam to watch the kids for about 2 hours last evening. Sam is in no way a morning, and it’s VERY apparent. For reference this is at 7:12 am. The kids had just gotten up at 6:30. This morning when she got up to watch the kids, she instantly fell asleep back on the couch. Husband and I had to wake her up before we left. We have a car in the shop currently so I was dropping him off then doing my errands. I had to use the restroom after dropping him off so I stopped back home, to find my house door unlocked and the home alarm not turned on. Sam was in the room with the kids sleeping. This was at 7:50 am. She had no idea I ever entered the house. I was angry but got back into my car to go do what I needed to do. While I was driving, I had a nagging feeling to check the living room camera from after the time we left. What I see on the camera horrified me as a mom. Not even 10 minutes after we left, Sam goes to the spot we keep the children’s melatonin (my child is autistic and takes it nightly) and proceeds to plop one into my child’s mouth. I saw red I sent the video to my husband to confirm what I saw, and he agreed. I then also sent it to my mom to triple check. I fly home and go inside to confront her. She lies and lies to me until she tells me that she actually did do it. I told her that she needed to be out of my house today by 1pm. And she had a total meltdown. She gave me every reason in the book as to why she did it, and freaked out that she has no where to go. I told a few people because I’m so upset I’m crying. I had some people who agreed with me, but some saying I shouldn’t kick her out since she has no where to go. Making me feel horrible. So my question to you is; AITA for kicking her out over giving my child melatonin? submitted by /u/Important_Spirit_887 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Melatonin is the devil for anxiety.
Worst panic attack taking melatonin last night. Was half awake and half asleep. Stuck in a lucid nightmare. Every time I would drift off, my body would jerk awake. Melatonin is Absolutely Insane
Last night I took 5mg of Melatonin for the specific purpose of receiving intense and incredibly bizarre dreams. I found myself in sleep paralysis at one point during the night and decided to stick with it to transition into a lucid experience. Incredibly strange and alien sounds emerged into my awareness and for some reason, I inserted thoughts about Christmas and Santa Claus. I was transported into some grid-like room very similar to the training room in Street Fighter. I was in my bed hovering in this room and jumped out to see three giant sized nutcrackers dancing like robots. I high fived one of them and then I proceeded to see trippy visuals with things like candy canes and reindeer flying past me. I was lucid during all of this. It so vivid and incredible. What are your guy's experience or opinions on Melatonin and do you think it can help you go lucid more often? submitted by /u/sizm0 to r/LucidDreaming [link] [comments]
