Why YSK: Pimple patches are terrible for both your wallet and the planet. They are made out of hydrocolloid and are cut into circles, added on plastic, and sometimes with additional ingredients. First, extra ingredients in your pimple patches like salicylic acid and niacinamide can cause discoloration in your skin- ie. actual circles of discolouration. No need for these ingredients. Second, one roll will last forever. If you're having a breakout, you can easily go through 20 patches. With the roll, you can cut it into the size and shape you desire, allowing to cover for larger areas. Third, pimple patches are of course a marketing beauty scheme. Someone thought to use them for pimples and then made them more accessible and common knowledge by putting a price tag and label on it. Hydrocolloid naturally absorbs moisture from the skin as its primary use is wound healing. They are also waterproof, breathable, protects the wound, and therefore promotes wound healing. Fourth, it's cheaper. Much, much cheaper. Fifth, the amount of plastic that goes into the packaging is ridiculous considering the original product was a roll of the stuff. I don’t know, I’m just frustrated. I was browsing YesStyle and realised there are so many products I’ll never get to try just because brands keep stuffing niacinamide into everything. Like Medicube and VT Cosmetics? They barely have a handful of products without it. It’s actually kind of sad because I end up skipping fun stuff like wrapping masks, collagen sheet masks, and other interesting launches just because I know my skin won’t tolerate the niacinamide. This is my tiny plea to skincare brands, if any of you ever lurk on these spaces: please chill with the niacinamide. It’s great as a targeted ingredient, keep it in a few dedicated products, maybe one or two in a range. Every time I gave it a chance my skin turned red, bumpy and irritated like my pores were personally offended. Not every skin type needs it and definitely not layered 5 times a day. The overuse is causing irritation and serious barrier damage but brands keep slapping it on the label like it’s the second coming of Christ. This ingredient is out of control!! I never liked it my skin hates it and yet somehow it’s in every product like it owns the skincare industry. Cleansers? Niacinamide. Moisturizers? Niacinamide. Toners, sunscreen? Yep. Lip balm? Sure. Before is in November 2024 After is today in February 2025 After years it finally clicked it my head that the common ingredient in all the products that don't work for me is Niacinamide. So I finally got my routine switched over to products that don't contain any niacinamide. My skin is less red, irritated and flush. I finally feel like my skin tone has evened out and my skin is more hydrated. I struggle with dry acne prone skin, but for a long time it seemed like it was just getting worse. In the past, I've tested various serums, masks, etc. and always came back to the basics of Vit. C / Moisturizer / Cleanser / Sunscreen. Nothing really ever gave me a "glow" so I thought this is just marketing BS.. Recently, I've added Niacinamide to my online shopping cart to reach the minimum sales amount for free shipping and since it is DIRT CHEAP (~5-7 EUR / bottle) hence this post is absolutely no snake-oil advertisement. So, about a year ago, I started using Niacinamide, and it was perfectly effective for me. The one I really enjoy using is TIAM's Vita B3 Source, which contains 10% Niacinamide + 2% Arbutin (I know it's high, but it didn't cause any issues for my skin). However, I've seen many people saying they hate Niacinamide, which makes me wonder why! Is it something like if you use it for a long time it doesn't have a good effect, or what? I'm confused lol. Like many of us, I really got into skincare during lockdown. I was 35 then, and even though had struggled with acne and breakouts since my teens my skin was fairly okay and I used benzoyl peroxide to try and keep it at bay. I had just had my second child and noticed I was getting some breakouts on my sides, nothing too bad but definitely more than I had gotten used to. I tried using some expensive serums (Glow Recipe etc) and my skin was getting worse. I then got a skin and me prescription thinking tretinoin would be the answer. I stayed on it for over 6 months but it didn’t make any difference. My skin was in fact worse then before. A few weeks ago something clicked for me, and I decided to stop using any products with niacinamde. I realized skincare brands were sneaking it into products without any clear labels. Even my Beauty of Joseph sunscreen has it. The after pic is now, 2 weeks from cutting out niacinamide completely. It seems as though this ingredient is in almost all skincare and makeup now, yet it wreaks absolute havoc on my acne prone sensitive skin. I had to change my cleanser after 5 years of using nothing but cetaphil due to a reformulation including niacinamide. I’ve read so many others having the same experience and wish that the skincare companies would take note!
