I have always disliked polo shirts (and rugby and Henley shirts). I think the only men who can pull off looking good in these shirts are the men that look good in anything. I think the rest of us look like slobs or like we sell appliances. Nothing wrong with selling appliances but it's not a fashion I aspire to. I would not tell someone what they should wear, but personally I think these shirts are ugly and classless. Does anyone else feel this way? EDIT: Just to clarify since this seems to have struck a nerve. As I specifically said in my post, I’m not trying to tell anyone what they can or can’t wear. I shared a personal opinion about polo shirts, not a rulebook for how people should dress. My original post was me seeing if anyone else happened to agree with a pet peeve. Some people do, some don't. If you like polos and feel good in them, then wear them. Style is subjective, and everyone’s taste is different. Mine just happens to lean the other way. “Mid-priced” is a bit of a misnomer since I am comparing it to high fashion and luxury (e.g. YSL or Loro Piana). Think of this list as “high end but for normal people”. I think that the mid-priced tier is a good compromise between price, fashion, and quality. Brands on this list will generally be higher quality than the mall brands; they typically use higher end materials (mostly natural fibers, except for the technical garments which use high performance synthetics). Many of them are made in first world countries with better labor and sustainability practices. I've lived in the UK (London) for a while now, but the longer I live here, the more confused I get about the dress etiquette for specific events... For a bit of context, maybe unnecessary, I was born in Eastern Europe, where it's pretty normal to dress slightly more formally for weddings, baptisms, Christmas, someone's birthday, etc. Of course, it depends on the family, but generally, women tend to wear a bit of makeup (if they usually do) and dresses with heels or sandals for Summer, and men usually wear nicer shirts. Here? I see that happening less and less, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm committing a serious faux pas with my fashion choices. Some examples: I was invited by friends to Christmas dinner last December, and I wore a long black turtleneck dress -absolutely nothing outrageous- but then both hosts were wearing hoodies and tracksuit bottoms. I felt pretty stupid. I was invited by my boyfriend's family for Easter, which also doubled as a celebration for his father's birthday. I thought it would be a bit more formal considering the number of guests. Everyone (ten people total), except his mum and me, wore the type of 'house clothes' you'd wear when you want to be comfortable. Again, I felt a bit silly, like I was trying to draw attention to myself, even though I genuinely expected everyone would be at least smart-casual. Another Easter celebration, from my British side of the family, they were also wearing hoodies during Easter dinner. Two years ago, I attended two weddings where the dress code wasn't specified, and I swear, on both occasions, I had more makeup and jewellery on than the brides and their bridesmaids. Some men even wore polo shirts. As a plus-one who didn't know anyone, I felt ridiculous and people definitely stared, despite the fact that I always try to avoid looking tacky. There have been many more examples, like going to live music events at nicer venues, where I'd assume people would want to look cute and dress up a bit. However, I often see people in hoodies and casual tops. I'll admit I'm a bit vain, I like my mascara and my heels - that's just how I was raised - but I simply don't feel comfortable always being the most overdressed person in the room. I've definitely toned it down over the years, for instance, I stopped doing my hair and I skip jewellery, but it seems like everyone else is being even more casual. I've spoken to my European friends about this, and they said it might not be a national issue but rather the type of circles I'm currently surrounded by. For the record, I'm not well-off at all, I shop at charity shops and in second-hands. Most people I've mentioned here would be considered middle class. The weird thing was that the label wasn’t from any of the brands that I have, and there was only one of that kind. I tried it on, and it clearly didn’t fit me. I assumed that it was an old shirt of mine that somehow got brought out of storage, and tossed it. Two months later, I find a pair of men’s jeans, clearly not my size, folded on the top of the dresser. This was after I was at a conference for a few days. The conference was in my town, but I was gone from 6am-11pm pretty much every day. I asked my wife about it and family who had visited recently. Nobody had any idea where they came from. I started to suspect something was up, but decided that it was in the best interest of my relationship to just ask once and then trust my wife’s response. I tossed the jeans and moved on. This morning, I found a men’s polo shirt hanging in my closet. Not my size, and is has brand from a store that I don’t shop at, and haven’t even stepped foot into for nearly a decade. This, only days after I returned from an out of town work trip. I confronted my wife demanding answers. She claims that she knows nothing. I started by asking her why she thinks I’m upset. She jumped straight to “you think I’m cheating”. I asked her to put herself in my shoes and try to explain how else I could interpret this pattern (me being gone, men’s clothing showing up in my house). She never answered the question. We went back and forth (never screaming or throwing things) for about an hour, with the shirt lying on the table between us. I kept saying that “I don’t know, is not an acceptable answer” - she ended with “or what?” I said that I needed answers one more time and got straight up from the table and left to go back to work. Historically, I do trust her. But I can see how easily lies come out of her mouth when speaking to her family, over seemingly small things. She grew up in an overbearing household and she knows how to cover her tracks. During the conversation I asked if I could go through her cell phone - something I have NEVER done before or even tried to do. Of course nothing of note. SOMETHING is happening. The pattern is clear to me. Am I over reacting? How should I proceed? Edit: Thanks for the insight folks. I’ve been internalizing all of this and trying to remain objective. It’s easy to jump to a conclusion about cheating, and yes, the evidence does seem damning. There is some advice in the comments about next steps, and many with differing perspectives on what else could have happened. This has certainly helped me step back and assess the situation more clearly. We had a multiple hour long conversation, she called my in-laws about the clothing, I called my folks with the same questions, I was given her phone to go through again, I even did some digging with the ISP to get connected devices and websites, texts from Cell, etc. No answers anywhere. At the end of the day, I chose to not blow up my entire life (walk out, lawyer, take the kids and run) and instead chose to “proceed with caution”. If she is cheating, she knows she is going to be heavily scrutinized and will eventually be caught with actual evidence. If not, I avoided destroying my family over nothing. I suspected cheating, resulting in a confrontation with my wife and no explanations anywhere. —— I left off on Tuesday calm, accepting that there had to be something more to the story. The last thing I wanted to do was blow up my life for no reason. Lots (about 75%) of folks instantly jumped to cheating, which is understandable given the context. The other 25% either thought it was fake or needed more info because the idea of folding/hanging clothes in the closet of the person you are cheating is so outlandish, which is also understandable. I was committed to finding answers that proved my wife’s innocence - which we eventually did. Out of all the 7.5 million views and 7k+ comments, the one thing that we all missed was the possibility of clothing being donated to us, which ended up being the case. My wife is thrifty, and baby clothing is expensive. One of the ways we have curbed the cost is by frequenting social media market places looking for those who are cleaning house. During the process, it seems that folks would include more than just baby clothing in their donations. It took some digging, but eventually we found the previous owners for both the pants and the polo and confirmed that it did indeed come from them. The last two days have been an emotional roller coaster. The saving grace out of all of this is that we both stayed calm, cool, and collected during the exchanges. Thanks to everyone for all the input and supportive DMs. Edit: Yes, we really do get all of our child’s infant clothing second hand, most of it hasn’t been worn yet. If you don’t have kids it probably sounds hard to believe. We also get this stuff in bulk (like garbage bags full of baby clothes) so not everything is immediately visible or apparent, and it just gets tossed in with our normal laundry. Best part is, you can find Dish Network polos at every Goodwill from the Atlantic to Pacific. If you want to increase your “importance level” as I’m now calling it, you have to have a ladder, or some heavy tool meant for a big job, a mini air compressor is just as effective. I know, because I live this (legitimately). Where anyone else would have been stopped and grilled by security, people literally just see my shirt and say “this way”, truly the best VIP experience. While we were there I noticed that he kept looking at my daughter out of the corner of his eye. I never really caught him fully looking so I thought nothing of it, especially as he has known my kids for over a decade. I didn't mention it to my daughter as I didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable if it was nothing. A couple of months went past and we visited them again. He kept talking to my daughter and not really to me, which is fine but it just seemed odd when my daughter has really bad anxiety and she can't really hold a conversation, and she makes it clear when she's uncomfortable talking. He just seemed to keep looking at her and talking. Even if he was talking to me, he would just look at her. The final straw was last week. We visited them and we've been having a heatwave so we were all dressed in as minimal as possible. My daughter in a thin pair of skorts and a t shirt, my son in a pair of athletic shorts and a gym top and me in a polo shirt and white chino shorts. Nothing unusual. Just basic summer wear. When we were in conversation he would look at my daughter. When anyone told a joke he would smirk a little or give a small laugh depending, but if my daughter told something mildly funny he would really laugh to the point that even she would look awkward. He kept dropping out of conversation and just staring at her. I think she noticed it as well because she started to lean back in her chair to try to cover herself, even though she was fine. She looked uncomfortable. Then when the sun set she put on a thick jacket and zipped it up. She said that since he was a good friend of mine she trusted him and got in his car. On the ride home he repeatedly touched her leg and started talking about how much she's changed since he saw her last (before we all met up) and how much of an adult she looks now. He told her she's growing into her body "like a good girl". My daughter said that she would walk the rest of the way home because she didn't want to put him out too much but he insisted on driving her all the way. She said she kept moving away from him but he was leaning to touch her knees. She said that at a red light not long before the house he gave her his mobile number and texted himself from her phone and told her to call him if she wanted a lift or "anything else". Then when she got home she went to leave the car but he grabbed her arm and asked her where his hug and kiss goodbye was (not a new thing, he gives us all a hug every time) and when she leaned in he held her tight and whispered that she should call him. In the last few months since then he has repeatedly been sending her explicit texts and images and waiting outside her work asking her if she would like a lift home, even though every time she's said no. She said she didn't want to say anything because she didn't want to upset me as he was the only friend I had. I feel sick thinking about this. This is my daughter. She's 20 but she's still my little girl and I feel like I've put her in danger. I've messaged him asking him to stop contacting my family and I've sent him the screenshots from her phone as reasons why but he is messaging me asking me why when she is an adult and the only sleazy thing he's done is cheat on his girlfriend as my daughter never physically said the words stop, she just ignored him. We've blocked him on everything and have completely removed him from every social media. My daughter has spoken to her work and they have said that until she is able to find another job they will ensure that at least one other member of staff will wait with her for the bus and I will be meeting her at the first stop in our town to take her directly home on days I'm not working and on days I am, then her grandparents will be picking her up. She is safe. I also had a lot of comments suggesting I get violent with this man. Although I do appreciate that a lot of people would be choosing the other route of "resolving the problem face to face", I'm not like that. I'd like to be. I'd like to say that there's no problem I couldn't solve that way. But that's simply not me. It doesn't make me a bad dad either. Obligatory on mobile so formatting might be janky. I (female) have been working for this company for about 6 months and we have a strict dress code that I follow closely. Our uniforms include a dry fit polo that comes in men's and women's. When I got hired and was assigned my uniform pieces I requested to get a men's cut because the sleeves and length fit me better than ladies. They gave me ladies cuts. No biggie, I'm pretty easy going so I just wear them and don't complain even though they're a little tight in some places. Yesterday I came in on my day off because we had a maintenance emergency that shut our location down for half the day. While I was there helping out (I'm salaried btw, so this was completely on my dime and unpaid) my store manager said we need to have a talk. Apparently in a managers meeting my name was being tossed around because I have nipple piercings. They're just bars with two balls on the sides. They're not huge and I've had them for a decade. I like them and am not planning on taking them out anytime soon. I guess some "customers" have complained and the company is giving me the option to either wear a bra (I have like... a cups breasts. They're not big and a bra is unnecessary and uncomfortable for no reason) or undershirt or cover them in bandaids when I come in. I said that gender discrimination because there are men walking around with nipple piercings wearing the same uniform and you can see them and no one has ever said anything to them. My boss said it was considered "sexual harassment" on MY part towards the customers! I don't understand how I am sexually harassing anyone considering I never EVER talk about my piercings, touch or mess with them in public, and keep my breasts covered at all times. I owned a dry cleaners for 5 years, and before that, used to work in one for 10 years, both front and back end. I know the whole process. I'm going to spill the secrets on garments you should never bring to a dry cleaners because you are being ripped off. EDIT: Disclaimer: My experience in the business may not be necessarily reflective of ALL dry cleaners so take that into consideration. DOWN JACKETS - Down items are expensive. It could cost $40 to have a down coat cleaned. Down items have to be washed by themselves, lest they spill feathers onto other items, so that's why they're so expensive, to ensure profit from the isolated load. Down coats are rarely dry-cleaned, but laundered, and then hung to dry overnight, and then placed in a dryer for a few minutes to plump out the feathers, and good to go. Down items are not pressed. You could wash a down jacket yourself, hang it to dry, and get the same processing COMFORTERS - Never bring a comforter to a dry cleaner unless it specifically says "dry-clean only." Dry cleaner owners won't dry clean a comforter unless they have to, because it's cheaper to launder. Comforters can range from $39.99 or higher and you're getting less quality than you would at a laundromat. Comforters are rarely ever spotted for stains, and they're laundered in a basic commercial wash machine with a standard setting, hung to dry over night to save on drying time, then placed in the commercial dryer, and then finished. If your comforter had any bad odor before you brought it in, it probably is still going to have that odor. You're better off paying $5 at a laundromat, and choosing your own cycle and spin settings. SPOT-CLEAN ONLY DRESSES - Many customers don't check or understand their care labels, and dry cleaners love that. Some formal dresses are "spot-clean only", which means, it can't be washed in the conventional way. It might fancy sequins glued to the fabric, which dry cleaning will melt and damage the dress. Dry cleaning is oil-based and will melt glue and plastic. Dry cleaners may charge you up to $30-50 due to the fanciness of the dress, when they can't even clean it. They may go over the spots and individually spot and treat them, or, at best, hand wash the item by soaking it in cold water, and hang drying overnight, nothing you can't do at home. Again, with the fancy sequins, the item typically can't be pressed. WEDDING DRESSES - Wedding dressed could cost up to $200 even though they are dry cleaned the same way as a $6 pair of pants, but, if you bring a wedding dress, NEVER opt for the preservation box. Dresses are more if you get the preservation box, which adds $50 or more to the cost - but dry cleaners DO NOT press wedding dresses that get placed in the box, which is typically there for an indefinite period. By the time the customers opens it 3 years later to notice it isn't pressed, it's too late to take back to the cleaners for a redo. So you're paying more money for the dress WITHOUT the pressing. You get more for your money if you buy the preservation box elsewhere, and put it in there yourself after you get your dress cleaned and pressed. LEATHER: Leather is the most expensive item to clean, around $50 for a coat, but dry cleaners rarely ever do leather on premises, but send it out to a third party leather cleaner. So you're paying more than what the dry cleaner pays to have it cleaned. Also, there is no special Leather dry cleaning method. Leather is simply lightly spot cleaned with a dish-soap leather formula and then hung to air dry in a moisture-free environment overnight. You're essentially just paying for the labor charge. To save money, you could lightly go over the jacket yourself with Dawn soap, water, and a microfiber towel. ​ WORTH IT: MEN'S BUTTON-UP SHIRTS - Men's shirts only cost around $1.25-$2 a shirt, They're laundered by the bulk and then heat-pressed on their own machine in less than 20 seconds. Dry cleaners don't make their money off of this, so it's a great value to the customer. WOOL PEACOATS - Wool peacoat are notorious for getting lint on them, and they're dry-clean only.
