Shame on preply for pushing sexual ads - company is probably run by the islanders
This grown woman in the ad is wearing a short skirt, a tied up shirt and obvious cleavage when she stands up, with girly pigtails. Just the typical female students which you find everywhere, you know? no wonder countless of tutors and people using this service have experienced perverts and provocative content. and if you don’t see anything sexual about this ad then you’re blind, dumb and in denial. submitted by /u/AliyaSpahic to r/Preply [link] [comments]

Preply unfairly Banned a tutor because he encountered a scammer.
I have only been on Preply for a month after my employment contract ended & only had 1 student, so I was still just getting a hang of how preply works. This was my only source of income at the moment. Yesterday, a scammer posing as a student contacted me about classes. He said he was from a company that wanted to book classes for 5 students. I told him to go ahead & book the classes. He asked me to increase my price by a huge amount because the contract he had was for around that amount. The 1st subscription & trial came through but then he asked me to schedule the classes back to back on the same day. Also it didn’t sound like anyone was going to show up for the trial lesson. That’s when I got suspicious & started googling. At this point I still wasn’t sure if this was a scam or not or how it could even work because the money goes to me & not him. I decided to block him anyway & report the matter to preply but after talking to preply support, they permanently suspended my account “for colluding with a person doing fraud” This is deeply unfair because how could I have known it was fraud?? Also, I blocked the student during the trial lesson, before any money was charged for classes & reported the matter promptly . Does preply just expect us all to be fully knowledgeable on all the scams & fraud modus operandis?? This was my only source of income at the moment so it hit quite hard. submitted by /u/Physical-Camera-7318 to r/Preply [link] [comments]

How good/bad is Preply?
Wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone else, especially if you're someone who struggles with motivation and consistency in language learning. I moved to Spain pretty last minute and needed to learn Spanish. I thought I could get by with Duolingo, a book, and sheer optimism. My girlfriend is Spanish, so we practise together too, but after a few months of trying I was making a lot less progress than I expected and honestly starting to wonder if I was just bad at languages. I'd heard mixed things about Preply, so I kept putting it off and tried iTalki first. I had lessons with a few tutors there but never quite found the right fit. I finally gave Preply a go about a month ago, doing roughly two lessons a week focused mostly on conversational Spanish and everyday vocabulary. So far it's been better than I expected, but mostly because I found a tutor who suits how I learn, not because the platform itself feels radically different. I think the main thing I've taken from it so far is that tutor fit matters more than the platform. I got lucky and found someone who prioritises conversation over grammar drills and adjusts to how I'm feeling in each lesson, and that's made more difference than anything else I tried in the months before. Whether I'd have found the same on another platform with a different tutor, honestly probaby yes. The other thing that's helped is just having lessons in the calender. Before this I'd tell myself I'd study later and then a week or two would disappear. That's been my pattern with self study for as long as I can remember, so having something scheduled has made a real difference for me personally. The only thing I'd say is that it still seems like a bit of a trial and error process. I wouldn't assume the first tutor you try will be the right one, and I can imagine your experience being pretty average if you don't find a good fit quickly. A few things I've picked up that might be useful for anyone else learning Spanish or stuck in a similar rut: Showing up matters more than feeling ready. Even a messy lesson is usually better than skipping practice completely. Not clicking with a tutor is usually just a mismatch, not a sign that either of you is the problem. If motivation is your weak spot, structure helps more than willpower. That's been the biggest shift for me. Still a long way to go and way too early to call it. But after months of stop-start progress I finally feel like I'm moving forward rather than just going through the motions. Curious whether other people found the same, that tutor fit matters more than the platform, or if you had the opposite experience. submitted by /u/Fun_Perception_239 to r/languagelearning [link] [comments]

I stopped working at Preply six months ago, despite the decent income, because of students like him.
This guy was one of my first students. One year ago, I reported him absent for a class and communicated the reasons why I did it, per usual. It was his last booked session and he left me on read. I increased my price significantly shortly after. Based on the knowledge I had of him, I knew that despite being well off, he is very, very cheap, so I didn’t even bother telling him about the new price and was just glad that he did not renew the subscription on his own. I think for some reason his feelings got hurt after that because he logs in every three months or so and updates his review, what I’m guessing is out of pity.😂 I don’t even teach on this platform anymore, but his updates are really amusing. He first gave me a 5-star with a long text saying how amazing I am (when we werw actually having the classes). Then after about 6-7months of the last session, it was 3 stars with a “bravo.” Then after 6 months he updated it to one star 😂 I have 30 five-star reviews, and now there's this This ridiculous feeling of unsafety and always being scared of unfair treatment from students is what made me stop teaching on this platform. Like, protect your tutors. This is a circus. submitted by /u/idkgirlidkijustdont to r/Preply [link] [comments]

I went to Japan for two weeks and forgot I was autistic.
I got back from a 2-week trip to Japan with my husband (yes, it was fabulous), and from the time we got through immigration to the time we returned to our airport gate back to the US, I forgot I was autistic. So a little background: I speak/read a bit of Japanese (around N4 level) and am diagnosed Level 1 ASD with cPTSD (latter is mostly quiet these days). I planned this trip with some research, having a "loose but structured" itinerary, and some suggestions from my Preply language tutor. In America, I struggle in social situations and especially overstimulation and need a lot of alone/only husband and dog time. Also disclaimer that this isn't a super serious post, just an interesting observation I wanted to share, and I understand being a tourist is much different from living in a place. For reference, I've also visited Vietnam, Thailand, and Portugal. Anyway, in Japan, there was none of that struggle. Trains are on time to the minute (and often to the second). They're also quiet, even when they're packed! When someone needs to get off, people try their best to move. While there are loud, bright places like Shibuya or Shinjuku, it's easy to step into a quiet, beautiful alley. Everywhere felt very safe (maybe with the exception of Kabuki-cho in Tokyo). Once you know certain rules (like taboos or faux pas), there's not a ton of deviation from those rules. When I did mess something up, peope were very graceful about me being a foreigner and not because I was "weird." There are helpful information kiosks, police officers, train station workers, and even kind obaasans everywhere if I got lost with something. Japan generally tends to have a very "mind your own business" culture, which is something I absolutely vibe with. I've been told I'm being antisocial for having the same mindset in the US, so this was a huge relief. Food is clean, predictable, and tasty, and while I'm an adventurous eater, I struggle with food sometimes. There are 711s everywhere in urban areas with tons of safe food (mine were onigiri and egg salad sandwiches on food-struggle days). Also, vending machines everywhere meant I didn't find myself super dehydrated, which is something I fail to recognize until I'm REALLY dehydrated. While there were a couple of instances of "oh my god, I'm about to have a meltdown," I never quite got there. These instances involved beginning to understand the train system (but now I understand it and feel confident!), and other tourists who happened to be oblivious. Other than that, my nervous system has never felt so regulated. I remembered I was autistic as soon as I was back at the airport gate with tons of other returning Americans, some of whom talked very loudly or were unfortunately inconsiderate of others around them. Anyway, again this isn't a super serious post or a deep analysis of cultural effects on autism. I just thought it was interesting (and also while I'm happy to be back in my own space, I'm a little bummed to return to a place that isn't as friendly to my autistic experience). Feel free to share your own traveling experiences! submitted by /u/VorpalSingularity to r/AutismInWomen [link] [comments]

I'm getting tired of the students I get.
Hi there, I'm a teacher with a degree in Hispanic Philology and a masters degree in teaching Spanish. I decided to start using Preply about 2 months ago and set the price at $10 since I would not have reviews for a while and I didn't think people would pay more for a "no reviews" teacher. The first student I got was excellent, nothing to complain about. They contacted me first to be sure I could help them and I'm still giving lessons to them. The second one was a mother who without asking or messaging anything scheduled a lesson for her son (unkown age at the time). I DON'T have experience with kids, in my profile I said I had experience with highschool and university students but maybe I should have clarified "ONLY". The mother didn't speak Spanish and her English was abysmal so communication was difficult and I could not get the age of the "son" because "it's not for school, it's for vacation" so it didn't matter to her (I surrendered on saying anything more because she didn't understand most of what I was saying anyway). The trial lesson came, not knowing if it was going to be a small child or a full grown adult and it ended up being an 8 year old. It didn't go well since I'm not used to keep the attention of such a small child and they didn't schedule any more lessons. If I at least had been able to communicate with her maybe I could have convinced her to schedule with someone more used to kids. Though I think students can set up filters when looking for teachers so I don't know why she didn't use that. The third one was a grandma who wanted to learn. Communication was great before the trial lesson but when the day came it was a disaster. The grandma used a tablet and had no idea about how to use the device neither the classroom tools, not even able to find the chat. In many ocasions I guess she would tap on something and get out of the app and then it was really difficult to get her back on the app to see what I was sharing and continue the lesson. She also asked for the book we were going to use and since she couldn't find chat I sent her the link through email. She didn't know how to download the file neither open the PDF so we also lost a lot of time on that and then more time on her getting back on the platform. We lost more than 40 minutes in this kind of stuff and she didn't schedule any more lessons. The fourth one has scheduled a trial lesson with me but didn't complete any of the info surveys (your objectives and current level etc.) preply gives to new students, so I had absolutely no info about this student. I decided to contact them. Some days have passed and still no answer. I will have a trial lesson where I don't know if it's another kid, a highschool student that needs urgent help with an exam, an university student coming here through Erasmus, a curious adult... I don't even know what's their level in Spanish or if they speak English or French so I have no idea how difficult will it be to communicate with them. My conclusion is that $10 = minimum interest and minimum effort for many students. I'm tired of this, I want SERIOUS students and not have to deal with this kind of stuff. I thought about increasing the price to $15 so maybe whoever schedules a trial lesson, even if it's less people, at least puts more interest in what they're trying to learn instead of ghosting me or at least know how to use a device if you want an ONLINE lesson. If you have any other recommendations I would be glad to hear. submitted by /u/Irrelevans_Res to r/Preply [link] [comments]

There are helpful information kiosks, police officers, train station workers, and even kind obaasans everywhere if I got lost with something.

So, after two weeks on Preply my schedule is full enough that I *have* to stop teaching on Cambly.
I genuinely expected to do a slow transition. Nope. I've got students paying between $14 and $22 per hour, mostly in the middle. I'm set to break into the 25% bracket by the end of the weekend. Already got three 5* reviews. Fully booked over there. No degree. Basic TEFL. Just saying, if you can actually teach and have a decent personality, I'm shocked by how good it is. My conversion rate is 95%. Literally hid my profile today because I can't take on any more students. Should have done this a year ago. P.S. this isn't pretty privilege either. I'm an average looking 35 year old woman. And almost all my students are women. submitted by /u/Short_Zebra7458 to r/Cambly [link] [comments]

Preply has given up on me…
Native Business English tutor, charging $18 currently with 6 5* reviews and nearly 50 lessons. I haven’t had a new student through Preply for nearly 2 months now, and I have had literally a single person favourite my profile as a lead in that time. It’s like Preply just doesn’t show my profile to anyone. Is there anything I can do to get it back in front of people? Should I keep grinding through the drought, or is it just a lost cause? submitted by /u/Same_Stay382 to r/Preply [link] [comments]

Slowly quitting after a year on Preply
So after a year of tutoring, and being 5*, charging up to $60/hour, hundreds of lessons taught, I finally decided to unlist my profile, and I have to say it's incredibly relieving. The most awful thing about preply is that it forces you to do unpaid trial lessons without any way of filtering people. I've had people who book a trial and say sorry I don't have money for lessons, I just booked a trial because of a promotion on facebook I had some idiot simultaneously demand that I list my qualifications, ask for a lower rate, demand me to proof that I know the material, and also ask if I could wake up at 4am to fit in her schedule I have people that book a trial, give no messages beforehand, and then throw me in front of a kid who has no interest in being there, effectively making me some sort of educational TV There are ways to fix this, but preply is trash and don't care about anyone -- so i'm out. And I feel great. submitted by /u/CaptainCheckmate to r/Preply [link] [comments]

I quit Preply and I feel so free
I started off as a student on the platform and then got into tutoring as I have experience but 2 months and 140 hours of teaching later next to my normal 24h job I realised it is so demanding. you set your price too high -> no one books. you set your price too low -> 300000 unpaid trial lessons. It is also my own fault for opening my availibility so much and trying to go above and beyond for everyone but I truly felt like I hit pause on everything else in my life because its so demanding even outside of the lessons with the constant replying, preparing materials etc. Any little action like rescheduling a class immediately tanks your profile ranking. I love teaching and one day I will return to it but I just want to know if anyone else also felt or feels so overwhelmed by their whole system and the countless unpaid hours. If trial lessons are unpaid for the tutors they should be free for the student as well. submitted by /u/Kiwiju-_- to r/Preply [link] [comments]

Did anyone have a good experience learning a language on Preply?
Hi everyone, I’m thinking of joining Preply to learn a new language and wanted to hear real experiences from people who actually used it. Did you have a good experience with your tutor? Were you able to learn the language properly? How long did it take you to feel confident or reach fluency? How often were you booking classes each week? Anything you wish you knew before starting? Would love to hear honest feedback before I commit. Thanks! submitted by /u/White__Giraffe to r/Preply [link] [comments]

7 Months Teaching on Preply: The Honest Things That I wanted to Say!
I’ve been teaching French on Preply for seven months now with 1000+ lessons, and I wanted to share the real things I’ve learned the personal stuff, the unexpected lessons, and the advice I wish someone had told me from the start. • Your energy is your real currency. No one talks about how emotionally demanding teaching can be. Some days you’re basically a tutor/therapist/cheerleader/human Google Translate… all at once. Tip: Protect your energy. Block breaks. Don’t stack six beginners in a row if you can't. You’ll burn out. • Trial lessons are 70% psychology, 30% teaching. People don’t buy a teacher. They buy a feeling: “I trust this person. I feel safe with them. I can talk to them.” Tip: Forget perfection in trial lessons so I think it's better to "focus on connection." • Your confidence will fluctuate just like your bookings. Some weeks you’ll convert three trials in a row. Other weeks, students say “I loved the lesson!” and then… vanish. Tip: Do not attach your self-worth to conversions. I did at first, and it was exhausting... • Notes matter more than you think. The small details you remember make students feel SEEN. Tip: Write down things like: “likes K-pop”, “is shy at the beginning”, “hates grammar drills but loves conversation”. It transforms your relationship with them!! • Your vibe attracts your niche. I tried being “professional and neutral” at first but it didn’t really work When I became more myself (warm, chatty, encouraging), I suddenly attracted students who matched my teaching style. Tip: Don’t try to be the tutor you think people want. Be you and your ideal students will show up naturally. • Quiet months happen, even if you’re doing everything right. December? Slow. Summer? Weird. Random weeks? Dead. Tip: Don’t panic. Update your video maybe, refresh your description, reorganize your calendar, send more messages to your students when you don't see them in the calendar. It helps more than people think. • Students stay for YOU, not your worksheets. Some of my students literally said: “I don’t care which exercises we do, I stay because the lesson feels good.” Tip: Be human. Celebrate their progress, encourage them, make them laugh when they feel stuck. That’s what keeps them coming. • You will grow in ways you don’t expect. I became more patient, more confident, and way better at explaining things simply but also better at understanding people, reading emotions, adapting quickly… It changes you. Since it’s the end of the year, I’ve been reflecting on my work and everything I’ve learned so far. I realized these thoughts might help other tutors, people thinking about joining Preply, and even students so they can understand that we’re human too, with ups and downs, doubts, and a lot of heart behind what we do. Disclaimer: This is just my personal experience and reflections. The results may vary for everyone!! submitted by /u/UnhappyConfusion7289 to r/Preply [link] [comments]

Does anyone else sometimes feel like Preply is a bit like a dating app? Let me explain.... I'm a student and I think I'm probably like many other users on Preply. I'll scroll through a search dismissing tutors purely on their photo (regardless of gender). Too young. Too old. Looks scary. Whatever it might be. Then there's the videos. It amazes me how many people look totally different to their photo. Sometimes years older on the video. Beard/no beard. Smart/scruffy etc. Then today I had the most tinder like experience yet. I found a tutor I really liked. He felt like a good match for the style of tutor I want. He has only 1 review which was 1 star based on the fact he refused to teach a child. Ok. Not a problem if it was handled correctly. He has a right to teach who he wants. So I booked a trial. Almost instantly the tutor cancelled the trial. No message. I messaged him to ask why. No response. Just plain rude. He clearly doesn't want to teach bald old men either. Maybe if I was a fit 30 year old blond woman I'd get a date. I mean lesson. Clearly deserves his 1 star review. How I wish I could add my own review! Anyway the search for love (or a suitable Spanish tutor) continues...... P.S I'm in a very good, long term relationship and not in the slightest interested in anything remotely like a dating app experience 😂 submitted by /u/HazyCosmicJive72 to r/Preply [link] [comments]

(AMA) I’m a Georgetown linguistics professor and Preply language learning expert. I’m here to bust myths about language learning and share some tips on becoming fluent
Hi there, Lara Bryfonski here. I am an applied linguist and Associate Professor of Linguistics at Georgetown University and a Preply language learning expert. My research focuses on how people learn languages and how we can best teach them. I’m the author (with Alison Mackey) of The Art and Science of Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press, 2024). I’m also a former language teacher. I’ve taught English language learners from preschool to adulthood in the U.S. and abroad, and I’m passionate about supporting new language teachers as they begin their careers. At the university level, I teach undergrads all about linguistics and graduate students all about conducting research on how languages are learned and taught. Outside of research, I love learning languages myself and have studied French, Spanish, and Chinese. Right now, I’m studying Japanese to prepare for a trip to Tokyo. It’s been over 10 years of researching how people actually get fluent in new languages, and I’ve noticed four sneaky myths that just won’t go away: Myth 1 Adults who learn a language after a certain age will never achieve fluency. Myth 2 You can become fluent in a language just by watching TV/movies, reading, and listening to music/podcasts/news. Myth 3 Children learn languages more quickly and easily than adults. Myth 4 Fluency means speaking without an accent. Proof this isn’t a bot https://preview.redd.it/etucchn4qpqf1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92c8c95967265578ad88b639e57a74232bf38bfe I’ll be back on Tuesday, September 23 at 1 PM ET to answer your questions right here. Drop your questions in the comments about language learning, teaching, or fluency, and let’s dive in together. Can’t wait to hear from you! UPDATE: I'm signing off for the day. I'm sorry if I missed yours, but thanks for all your great questions! Thanks so much for all the great questions! submitted by /u/Preply to r/languagelearning [link] [comments]

“What were you wearing?” Tensions rise on r/Preply after a tutor cancels a student’s lessons because of her outfit
Tensions rise on r/Preply when a student shares screenshots of DMs from their former Preply tutor, who cancelled her lessons due to her choice of clothing. Redditors are divided on whether or not the tutor is a weirdo. Who the hell does this kid think he is telling women how they can dress?! Get out. I hope he gets his profile removed. idk man if someone says the way you’re dressing makes them uncomfortable that’s their right It’s a free market, for both tutors and students. Some question whether OP is a liar. I’m a woman myself but how do we know what she’s saying is true? Some accuse OP of doxxing. I’m sorry this happened but I don’t think doxxing him is okay Soo…what was OP wearing? Curious minds want to know. Can we see your outfit? ☺️ Some more nuggets. exactly, women are acting very entitled here. don't hurt your last two brain cells trying to figure out normal people matters honey Ahh ffs. Preply is a terrible platform
Their bar for hiring teachers is very low, anyone who has a laptop can become a teacher. The teachers teach randomly and the platform does NOT issue a refund if you subscribed but wanted to cancel shortly after. PREPLY JUST SHUT ME DOWN
After delivering over 1400 lessons with seriousness and professionalism as a tutor on Preply, in May 2025, my profile was suspended without any prior notice and without being given the opportunity to present my side of the story. The accusations were based on one-sided and undocumented reports, and I was never granted access to the evidence used to justify the decision. Despite sending a formal legal notice and a follow-up letter from my attorney, Preply has completely ignored all communications, refusing any form of direct discussion. Even more contradictory is the way they handled other situations where I had asked to stop working with certain students due to repeated scheduling issues and problematic behavior. In those cases, Preply ignored my concerns and insisted I reach an agreement with the student. But when I was the one being reported, they moved straight to a permanent suspension, offering no chance to explain myself. Moreover, some lessons remained active on my calendar even after the suspension, which caused confusion among students and further harmed my professional reputation. I have submitted a formal complaint to the Data Protection Authority, as Preply’s conduct appears to violate the principles of transparency, fairness, and the right to defend oneself, as outlined in the GDPR. Preply has demonstrated an arbitrary and unbalanced approach, placing greater weight on student reports, even when unsubstantiated and completely failing to protect the rights of tutors, who are the core of the platform. EDIT As many users keep questioning whether I was actually professional or not, here are several screenshots of my student reviews, consistent 5 star feedback from different countries and languages. I’ll let the facts speak. https://imgur.com/a/C1QGVVY submitted by /u/Important-Recipe6209 to r/Preply [link] [comments]

Seriously, how do people make money on Preply?
I've been on it for a few weeks and I've gotten swamped with demo lessons that were clearly one-time learners and had no interest in subscribing. It's so frustrating. I've wasted so much time and only one person has signed up. It's insane they do not pay teachers for demo lessons. Does this get better at some point? Is it just a matter of being patient? Or should I cut my losses? submitted by /u/hipstertinytim to r/OnlineESLTeaching [link] [comments]
