Looking for a sewing machine that will last forever
I sew everything at home - from delicate silk to thick denim and leather. My old machine is barely holding up, and I want something that will last for decades. Seriously, you do not need a $2500 sewing machine. Or even a $1500 sewing machine. Like, for real.
A post in some millennial quilting group just made me shake my fist at the sky and roll my eyes all the way to the back of my head. Poster: I have $1500 to spend on a new sewing machine but all the dealers tell me the next step up from my current perfectly functioning sewing machine is $2500. Oh, and all I do is sew straight lines and I’d like a little extra throat space. Chorus of Commenters: get a stupid expensive juki! Now, for all the necessary disclaimers. I have no issue with people spending money on their hobbies. I have no issue with having the tools you want to make the things you want. But sometimes. Sometimes the level of conspicuous consumption in the sewing world, particularly in quilting, really grosses me out. I’ve been sewing most of my life, and started making quilts 25 years ago. But I was never part of the quilting cult that seems to be really focused on spending a lot of money on materials and machines and all the *stuff. I’ve just been quietly making quilts alone in my house, learning from thrift store and library books. And yes, I have a whole lot of fabric and multiple sewing machines and other sewing tools and supplies that I have gathered over a lifetime of sewing both as a hobby and for many years off and on professionally. But I want to shake them and be like, if you are just sewing straight lines, you do not need a f*cking $1500 sewing machine. You don’t even need a $500 machine to do that. Like lady, I’ve been sewing at a really high level and a high volume for something like 40 years and the fanciest and newest sewing machine I have is a 25 year old Bernina Activa 125. And it’s still my “new machine.” I think this all feels especially icky to me because I come from many generations of seamstresses and Appalachian quilters. While I know quilting was/is a thing everywhere, it feels a little more personal in some way that I can’t explain. The whole point of patchwork quilting was to avoid waste: to use and reuse every single tiny scrap because all bits of fabric were precious. And then to make something beautiful, functional, and life sustaining from trash is transcendent. My people have been making quilts (and everything else) on simple, workhorse sewing machines, and before that by hand, because that’s what they had. I don’t have any beefs with sewing quilts on machines or quilting by machine. But if all you are doing is sewing straight lines, and you don’t need an industrial machine, spending that kind of money on a sewing machine is just about straight up consumption and status. Which to me, is antithetical to the tradition and spirit of quilting and I am 100% judging you. Also, my side quest rant: I saw some quilting-related ad that was like, ohhh, isn’t it cool that you can make quilts from scraps? Yes, mother-f*ckers. That is exactly what people have been making quilts out of for the thousands of years that humans have been making quilts. It’s only in the last several decades that we’ve been like, let’s take a big piece of fabric, cut it into a bunch of little pieces of fabric, then sew them together into another big piece of fabric. And yes, I have done that plenty and I will do it again, but don’t act like it’s the norm. I’m just so sick of everything being turned into an opportunity (that is often presented as a command) for wasteful and mindless consumption. Thank you all for attending to this matter. submitted by /u/Excellent-Witness187 to r/BitchEatingCrafters [link] [comments]

What's the Best sewing machine for beginners right now? (Easy to use under $300)

I’ve been reading reviews and watching YouTube videos, but a lot of them feel sponsored or just too technical for a newbie. I’m mainly looking for something that’s: Beginner friendly: Easy to thread and set up. Reliable: Doesn't jam constantly or have tension issues every 5 minutes. Versatile: Can handle basic projects (clothing/repairs) but also thicker fabric like denim occasionally. Budget: Under $300 if possible. I keep seeing the Brother CS6000i and Singer Heavy Duty recommended everywhere, but I've also heard mixed things about their long-term durability. What are you using right now? If you started today as a total beginner, would you buy the same machine again? Would love to hear some real-world experiences! Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/wajid123_ to r/SewingForBeginners [link] [comments]

Sewing Machine Recommendations
Hello all! I am looking into learning how to sew and I've never done it before so I'm a total beginner. Anyway, I was looking at some used sewing machines and I'm unable to decide what would be best for me as a complete beginner + also my goals for the future. My current goals are just to learn the basics and be able to understand how the machine works and basics about patterns as well. In the near future I want to create some fashionable pieces for my personal use. Could be any kind of project, not sure about it. I also want to be able to sew some heavier fabric like denim, etc. So that's what is contributing to my confusion even more... Also, I would like to get a machine which supports zig-zag stitch (I don't care much about design stitches rn) as I want to be able to sew buttonholes easily. Currently I have the following options available (all used): Brother JA20 Brother BM-2600 Usha Janome Allure DLX Usha Janome Marvela Singer Talent Singer Tradition (or some similar model) I also saw some older Singer Fashion Maker machines - the ones with the metal body and an external motor and foot pedal. I feel like those might be much better/longer lasting and also be able to handle heavier fabrics should I decide to work with denim or other such material in the future. However, those machines require a bit of repairing/servicing and although I could definitely get those for way cheaper than the other ones I listed above, I'm still confused as to what would be the best choice for me. P.S: As for me personally, I kinda lowkey wanna buy the older metal-body machine (Singer Fashion Maker) and restore/service it cuz I love restoring old stuff and getting a sturdier machine for cheaper sounds much nicer than buying one with plastic parts which might break easily (does it?) (Also since im getting it used theres much greater risk) Anyways please recommend which would be best for me right now. Thanks in advance. submitted by /u/Flintxo to r/SewingForBeginners [link] [comments]

What is the Best Sewing Machine Right Now?
Hey everyone, I’ve been looking into the best sewing machines for beginners lately and noticed a few models that keep getting mentioned in different threads and reviews. Most people seem to agree these are solid picks if you want something easy to use, durable, and under $300. A lot of people in sewing communities keep recommending these models for how beginner-friendly they are. They’re easy to set up, don’t jam often, and seem to handle both small projects and thicker fabrics pretty well for the price. submitted by /u/wajid123_ to r/SewingForBeginners [link] [comments]

Touched a sewing machine for the first time two weeks ago. How did I do?
I remember watching the Mai Ardour graduation dress two years ago and had always wanted to make it, but I didn’t know how to sew. About two weeks ago, I pulled my grandma’s old Singer out from the garage and decided to teach myself. I practiced on some scraps to get the hang of the machine and then went to Hobby Lobby and bought fabric and bias tape for $11. This piece took me about 7-8 hours over two days. I am quite happy with how it turned out. I can’t wait to try more fabric types and colors. The only question I have is about the seams around my hips. They seem to be bunching up and creating bumps. Is it because I stretched the fabric while sewing or because I angled it incorrectly? I used zig zag stitches and cotton thread. submitted by /u/Rough_Shallot_5189 to r/sewing [link] [comments]

Does anyone want an awesome sewing machine at a fraction of the cost of an industrial machine?
***UPDATE our community list is here http://marvelous-machines.com/ Hello from snowy France! My wife is really loving getting into leathercraft(me too, as I am the one who gets to wear the last a lifetime belts.) She spends hours every night in front of the fire hand sewing. When she asked me about sewing machines(full disclosure I am an engineer) I went down a rabbit hole checking out the options available. I have been confronted with a problem… IMO there are too few options: Remortgage the house and buy a Juki $$$$$$ Buy a chinese cobbler's manual machine (runs like a bag of spanners falling down some stairs) and needs a lot of modification to be used. Find an old singer and cherish it like a family heirloom Due to the COVID pandemic, myself and some friends (Aeronautical Engineers) are out of work 🛩🚫☹. This got me thinking. What if we put our brains to work and made a hardy leather sewing machine with guides, electric motors and everything you need to make beautiful leather craft. Something super easy to use and maintain. At a ⅓ of the cost of an industrial machine? Maybe like $499. Would anyone want one? My wife does, that is for sure(lucky for her we are going to do at least one) I would really appreciate any feedback. Thanks for making awesome apparel for us husbands/wives/family/customers. 🙏 submitted by /u/danielreidy7 to r/Leathercraft [link] [comments]
