My best friend bought me a gift card with $25 on it from Starbucks for my birthday! I have never used it until I noticed some strange behaviour that someone ELSE was using the card. I’m not from BC, I’m from Ontario. I contacted the store and spoke with a kind employee who told me to contact customer service which I did and was on the line for about 1-2 hours and decided to hang up. I submitted a request to delete my account and it says it could take up to 30 days?? I changed my password as well and turned on two factor authentication. I’m going to go into my local Starbucks tomorrow to see if I could switch over my remaining funds to a different card because this is just really unprofessional and hearing other people’s stories that this has been going on for years?? I don’t think i’ll be using Starbucks and their reward system for quite a while :/ While I am upset that this affected a gift my friend gave me, I am not that upset because it didn’t affect my debit card. Hey there I want to say thank you to everyone who gave me such good advice before I went on my trip to Vegas back on the 24th of last month. I had went to see the Beyonce Cowboy Carter Tour with a prepaid hotel stay at the Mardi Gras hotel and casino just off the strip from that Thursday night to till later that sunday the 27th after seeing the final two shows of the concert. Before my trip I had paid for the round trip flight and the 4 night 3 day stay. I had booked everything earlier in the year before I was sadly laid off from my non profit job in June a week after my birthday on the 16th. If it was not for my unemployment still being pending (to this day) I would have had more than enough to get me by however I was left to my own devices and already frugal lifestyle being upped an anti as I was entering the city of Las Vegas. Basically this is how it happened Thursday- landed in Vegas at 9 pm walked from the airport to my hotel 1 1/2- 2 hour walk. I met up with fellow Beyonce fans and walked from my motel to the cosmopolitan to meet up We basically walked around the entire Caesars palace main floor before going back to our hotels. I walked back to my motel then went to sleep. Harry Reid International Airport → Mardi Gras Hotel • About 3.2 miles walking. Mardi Gras Hotel → Caesars Palace • About 1.5 miles. Caesars Palace → Mardi Gras Hotel • Same as above: 1.5 miles. Friday- Woke up at 5 am to walk to the target where I would do my food and hydration shopping and getting whatever I needed for my stay with the $50 gift card and take in the strip properly before sunrise Tried to shamelessly sneak in to the holiday inn on tropicana across from MGM for possible free breakfast before target opened but was denied entry went back to target and got the following: 1. A 6 pack of liquid IV 2. A bag of pita chips 3. Roasted garlic hummus 4. Oui vanilla and chocolate chips yogurt 5. A pack of honey wheat sliced bread 6. A travel sandalwood body wash on clearance 7. 3 bottles of Aquafina waters 8. (This was the only place I could get proper caffeine) stopped at the Starbucks in the target and got a A venti caramel iced coffee it was less than 9 dollars compared to the 15 here in Seattle 9. 1/2 lb pack of sliced uncured honey ham Walked back to the Mardi Gras around 8-9 Took an hour break to hydrate devoured 2 sandwiches. Shamelessly told a 108 bus driver I only had 50 cents to get to Fremont Street and was granted a ride thankfully. Took pictures, attempted to get back to my hotel The bus driver on my way back did not let me on the bus so I was forced to walk back to my hotel. Arrived at my hotel around 12 took an hour rest to elevate my feet and hydrate Took a shower put my simple merch tee and shorts outfit with my cowboy hat, my remaining 2 bottles of water with extra liquid IV in them made 2 sandwiches and went to find the “free tram” everyone was talking about to get to the allegiant stadium however I didn’t realize I had to walk to Excalibur to catch the tram. Obviously I went in as many hotels and casinos to get Air conditioning as I made my way however I did end up walking from paradise rd down to flamingo rd took a right and walked to the other side of the strip where I then walked through the cosmo/the aria/t mobile arena where I sincerely was met with the most challenging and brutal part of my entire trip that challenged me mentally and physically. That last stretch going from the aria out to t mobile arena and to Excalibur most definitely gave me heat exhaustion and even a slight anxiety attack from the heat at one point before I arrived at the tram I needed to take. Regained my strength and got some complimentary lemon water at mandalay before tracking over that god forsaken bridge. Had the time of my life at the concert in the club 100 level Walked back to my motel. Saturday: Woke up at 12pm from being out like a buggg I was knocked out HARDER than I ever have in my life it was the best sleep I’ve ever had 😭😂. Spent the whole afternoon in my motel room eating sandwiches and listening to Beyonce unaware of THE LIFE CHANGING SHOW OF MY LIFE. Took an uber paid for by a fellow concert attendee I met the night before that was staying at the same hotel as me. Saw JayZ, Shaboozey, DESTINYS CHILD 😩😱🥹 Perform and most definitely blacked out and having a mild heart palpitation humble me HARD when the girls came out and surprised us. Walked back to the motel Stayed up all night debriefing and sharing my experience with some international fans on a livestream until 6am Packed my bags and walked to the airport and got to my flight at 1pm . While I do work for an actual company, sometimes the clients that use the services of the company are so grateful of the level of care that an individual employee may give to their loved one, they feel moved to give us gifts for our efforts. These gifts can range anywhere from a bouquet of flowers, to home made/store bought treats, gift cards, etc. Anytime I get delicious treats from clients I always share them with my husband (33M). However if I come home with a gift cards (like a $25 Amazon card or $50 visa) my husband wants me to share those as well. One time I came home with four gifts cards (Target, a Visa, and two Amazon). When he saw them he started talking about how I need to share them since no one gets him gifts for his work (he works in construction). He moped about it (and I do love him, he works hard) and I gave him one of my Amazon gift cards and insisted on keeping the other ones myself, since these are gifts from clients I work with for the care of their loved ones. Recently I have been given gift cards again and when he saw them he said asked what I planned on getting with them. So I told him, and the items I plan on getting will be strictly for me and he scoffed at that. He started complaining again about why how I should share or get something that benefits both of us. We went back and forth for a bit. I reminded him I always spend my own money for things that benefit us both or that we can both enjoy, and that when I use these gift cards I always get something I can’t always afford with my own money. He kept insisting I share. He brought up the fact that it wasn’t fair that even though I shared an Amazon gift card with him before, he ended up with nothing because Amazon messed up his order and he never received his item, but he got a refund. I told him that THAT was not my fault at all and at that point I got really annoyed and told him to leave me alone. He made a commit about me “not being raised to share” (I’m an only child) and I got mad and told him “that’s that sibling mentality and only works with parents and their kids. Get over yourself” and I walked off. He side-eyed me. I kinda feel bad about it all but honestly I just want my gift to be mine. I work with a new set of clients every few months so this is a frequent occurrence. Is there a better way I can respond or handle it better in the future? (Some extra context: We are not exactly well off, but bills are always paid and our fridge is always full. We can afford to treat ourselves once a month and we always treat ourselves together or we don’t leave each other out. But like if we want to get ourselves something really nice, like a set of weights or a nail art/care kit then it is a sacrifice the other does not benefit from so we put purchases like that on the back burner for a while. I didn’t think any financial details were relevant to a situation about gift cards, so I’ll clarify that. My husband works construction and I work in a care industry that is NOT medical. In fact in the field I work in it is customary (US) to give gifts to the workers during a designated “appreciation week” or during Christmas holidays. So I only get gifts twice a year, more than 6 months apart usually and the most gift cards I’ve ever gotten was four but the value of those gift cards usually don’t amount to more than maybe $50 (2 $5 Starbucks, $10 Target, $25 Amazon to give an example). The rest are usually skin care gift or food items. The one time I got a $50 visa gift card we went to an expensive restaurant with it. For the record my husband and I do not celebrate birthdays and holidays and this is a mutual decision between both of us. We have no children. We consider ourselves 50/50 but it goes like this. My husband makes more than I do. He takes on all utility bills (including internet and cell phone service), covers health insurance and car insurance. I inherited a house that needed repairs. There is no mortgage but there is a home repair loan I pay monthly and I pay the car note for a car I purchased. Since the home belongs to me I choose on the responsibility of saving for property taxes. After we are done paying our bills with our own separate accounts we usually have a few hundred dollars left in our individual accounts. We put that together and use that to buy groceries/bath/home essentials. We treat ourselves once a month. We share almost every interest and hobby, so say if one person wants to go to the comic book store as a treat we both walk out with comics. If one wants to by a video game that’s cool because we’re both gamers, or we take a drive to the beach, go see a movie, go out to dinner, etc. We’re not rich but we can afford to get take out twice a week (we try not to). We treat each other/gift each each other when we can. I am fortunate enough to have clothes given to me by family members that happen to shop at expensive department stores. The clothes are nice, barely worn or will even still have tags on them. I actual love this since my family is very fashionable and only give me good stuff. I have absolutely no problem with this. Since I get clothes for free I often buy my husband clothes (especially since he wear them out faster). He would take clothes from others if he could but there are no men in his family or mine his size. We are not perfect but we honestly don’t argue, any disagreements we have we can either talk it out or agree that it’s not serious enough to get to deep off into. I recently got a couple of gift cards because of the holiday season. One is $5 at Starbucks, the other is $25 at Amazon. I brought up that I may have a package showing up soon because I wanted to buy something for myself from Amazon and he suggested we should share that card and get something for both of us. I disagreed and we said some not so nice things to each other. I have an IKEA credit card that gives me good cash back on their purchases. I purchased a large item from them and got a good amount of cash back. The only thing is that the cash back is given as a reward certificate that expires in a few weeks. This is to drive the customers back to store to get them spend more but, I didn’t have anything in mind that I needed. I went to store a few days before the reward certificate was expiring to get a gift card that doesn’t expire. Me: Can I get a gift card please? I’d like to pay with the reward certificate. Cashier: No, you can’t buy gift cards with reward certificates. You can only buy other stuffs. Me: I don’t need anything else today and the reward certificate is expiring in a few days. Is there anyway I can extend the expiration date? Cashier: No. Here comes the compliance part. I quickly grab a item closest to the reward certificate amount and buy it with the reward certificate. Then I immediately go to a rerun counter to exchange it for a gift card and happily walk out of the store. I don’t understand why they have this dual policy of short expiation duration of the reward certificate and not to sell gift cards with that. This’ll only to make the customers frustrated.
