TIL the Stockholm Syndrome which claims that hostages tend to develop a psychological bond with their captors is considered highly dubious by psychologists, and in the initial case it was actually the captor who felt less willing to kill the hostages after spending more time with them.

Stockholm, Sweden was grand. One of my favorite cities to date.
In June, I had the opportunity to go to Stockholm for a 3-day work conference. It was my first time visiting and we spent a total of 8 days there exploring the city and the surrounding area - and it is easily one of my favorite cities that I've visited. Other than the sights, etc..., what I really enjoyed about the city is the vibe. To me, it's a city where I feel like you get more of the advantages of a big city but less of the disadvantages of a big city. For someone like me, the pace was just right. Enough activity and people to feel lively but not too much to feel overwhelming. Easy access to most places. People were friendly and the city was safe and relatively clean for a capital city. It was a city where I really felt like I could actually relax pretty thoroughly. I hope to be back one day. submitted by /u/looking_for_EV to r/travel [link] [comments]

Sharing some pictures of Stockholm 2025 in my small bachelor apartment
I've seen the odd post on here with people inquiring about how some of the Stockholm 2025 pieces look in practice. I took the risk on some of them and I'm satisfied with how they look in my place. As you can see there's a fair amount of other IKEA pieces worked in as well, so figured I’d share with other enthusiasts. I actually found the coffee table in the as is section so that was a big come up. submitted by /u/JS9766 to r/IKEA [link] [comments]

my opinion on stockholm as a tourist
I arrived in Stockholm with high expectations. I have traveled extensively across Europe and visited many capital cities, Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Paris, London, Copenhagen. I know what a great European city feels like. Europe usually delivers. Stockholm did not. I arrived in Stockholm with very high expectations. I had just come from Prague, a city that had genuinely moved me, and based on everything I had seen online, I was convinced Stockholm would deliver something similarly special. The photos promised water everywhere, a glittering archipelago city, historic charm wrapped in Nordic light. I was ready to be enchanted. The enchantment did not last long. The moment I stepped out of Central Station, something felt off. Instead of being welcomed by the kind of grand, atmospheric arrival that a city of Stockholm's reputation deserves, I was hit with a wall of concrete and cars. The area was aggressively car-centric, loud, and cluttered with the kind of bland modern architecture that belongs in a business park, not a celebrated European capital. It was an inauspicious first impression, to put it generously. I looked to my right and there it was, a loud, intrusive highway cutting straight through what should have been the most scenic and historical part of the city. Not hidden underground, not tucked away on the outskirts. Right there, in plain sight, roaring through the heart of Stockholm like someone had simply forgotten to care. In front of me stood row after row of uninspired box buildings, grey and featureless. I stood there for a moment, genuinely taken aback. I told myself it was just this one corner. Every city has an ugly side near the train station. It gets better when you walk further. It has to. So I set off toward my hotel, the Grand Hotel, making my way up some awkward stairs across the street, and was immediately met by a long, cheerless boulevard lined with some of the most lifeless architecture I have encountered in any European city center. Street after street of it. I felt like I had been scammed. Like I had been hit in the chest with a knife. This place is enormous, I kept thinking, and it is genuinely, thoroughly ugly. Is this really Stockholm? Is this what people fly across the world to see? I kept walking, partly out of necessity and partly out of stubbornness, holding onto the hope that things would improve. And slowly, gradually, as I drew closer to the harbor, they did. The water began to appear between the buildings and with it came a kind of relief. By the time I reached the waterfront and made my way into Gamla Stan, I finally understood what the fuss was about. The old town is charming, intimate, and full of character. The water genuinely transforms everything around it, adding a softness and drama that the rest of the city desperately lacks. I wandered for hours and enjoyed every moment of it. That part of Stockholm is everything the photographs promised. But it didn't take long for reality to set back in. When I ventured back into the inner city to explore further, the magic evaporated almost instantly. And I say this having visited a great many European cities, Stockholm's inner city might genuinely be the ugliest I have ever seen at this level of fame and prestige. I was bracing myself for something in the spirit of Prague or Vienna, cities where the architecture tells a story at every turn, where you can feel the weight of history in the streets. What I found instead was something boring, disjointed, and strangely soulless. I pushed further into the city, giving it every opportunity to change my mind. It did not. The same pattern repeated itself block after block. Bland facades. The city's fabric is a patchwork of plain classical buildings, not bad on their own, but thoroughly unremarkable, interrupted almost every other block by a modern glass or concrete box that seems to have been dropped there with complete indifference to its surroundings. The two styles don't complement each other. They just coexist awkwardly, each making the other look worse. Then came sodermalm, which many people had recommended to me as the cool, characterful alternative to the tourist center. And while it had a slightly different energy, the architecture told the same tired story. More blandness. More modern boxes wedged between buildings that had clearly once been part of something more cohesive and beautiful. I walked around waiting to be surprised and mostly wasn't. What makes it all the more frustrating is that the bones are there. The topography is dramatic, the waterways are stunning, and Gamla Stan proves that Stockholm is capable of genuine beauty. But so much of it has been squandered. The highway alone, that thundering, graceless scar running through the most scenic stretch of the city, feels like a symbol of everything that went wrong. Someone, at some point, made a deliberate choice to put it there. And the city has been paying for that choice ever since. Stockholm is not a bad city. On its best days, around the water, in the golden light of the harbor, it can be quietly breathtaking. But it is a deeply uneven one, and for a city with this much natural potential and this much international prestige, uneven simply isn't good enough. It’s even sadder knowing that most of the year it’s cold and dark, a combination that only amplifies the city’s blandness. I feel bad for the swedes! Prague was a 10 out of 10. Every street a painting, every corner a reason to stop and stare. Stockholm, for all its promise, lands at a 7 at best, and that 7 belongs almost entirely to the waterfront. The rest of it I could happily never see again. submitted by /u/SnooPeanuts7890 to r/stockholm [link] [comments]

What do I need to know about Stockholm?
Hej Im from UK, visiting Stockholm (Sodermalm) on 6-12th May. I don’t really know any Swedish, and my knowledge of Sweden goes as far as Ikea, Minecraft, Zlatan and Yung Lean/DG Can you guys please give me a little bit of advice before I travel? For example, do I need to learn any Swedish before I travel or will I be okay with just English? Is there any basic social rules that I should be aware of before I travel? Please recommend things to do. This can be absolutely anything, from museums to visit, days out, foods to try (i love my foreign snacks and fast food lol), bars and clubs to check out, or even events which are happening during my stay, like bands performing etc. I’m hoping there’s a giant Ikea somewhere that I can visit. It’s like an amusement park full of furniture hehe Anyways yeah. Please tell me whatever you think I might want to know. Your favourite spots to eat, drink or just chill.
