I totally misunderstood the concept of TDEE
I started walking off and on Jan 2026 to lose weight. I'm 5'1" and my starting weight was 165.2 lbs. I didn't get serious about walking daily until right about a month ago though. Because I kept waffling btwn 155-159 for a couple weeks, this week I decided to start tracking everything I was eating. I thought I was doing great coming in right around 1200 calories/day so far or close to it. I'm not starving by any means. I have always been bad about skipping meals if I'm not hungry, like all 5+ decades I've been alive. Now here is my issue. I was thinking that I should be eating calories based on what weight I wanted to get to, not aiming for calories based on a deduction from my maintenance calories... So essentially, based on that concept, I'm not eating enough, but tbh, I just can't make myself eat more... If I'm walking 4-5 miles/day and continue to track my calories, will I still continue to gradually lose weight? I was wanting to start lifting light weights 2x a week starting in May. I just wanted to get the walking part down first. submitted by /u/Overall_Recording to r/PetiteFitness [link] [comments]

calculate your BMR and TDEE, seriously
I’m 5’1, was 130lbs in early march. Was on a deficit that an app calculated for me. Was exhausted constantly, really irritable and the weight wasn’t shifting at all. Finally read advice on here about calculating an accurate deficit, and it changed everything. my TDEE is around 1800, so I started eating 1600 calories two weeks ago. I have more energy, my muscles are growing, i’m happy again, and I’m finally losing weight!! I’m at 122lbs as of today, & going to focus more on recomp from now on. just thought i’d say here, because i genuinely thought because of my height that i needed to be eating 1200-1400 calories to lose weight at all. silly me. thank you to all the amazing people on this subreddit and others like it for completely changing my fitness journey ❤️❤️❤️ edit: realised i didn’t give any info about how to calculate tdee or bmr 😭 i used the calculator on nerdfitness.com, the article is called ‘How Many Calories Should I Eat Every Day? A TDEE Calculator For Total Daily Energy Expenditure’ and i really recommend reading the whole thing if you’re interested submitted by /u/carrotcr to r/PetiteFitness [link] [comments]

Been eating 1400-1600 cal per day, and used the TDEE calculator and found my maintenance to be 2500 cal 😱.
Like the title implies, I’ve been under-eating this whole time. I have been experiencing poor sleep, and thought I had severe anxiety and started therapy. I saw a post about under-recovery and energy deficit and decided to give the calculator a try. Come to find out I’m way below maintenance!! For more context, I’m 5’3 145-148 lbs lean. I workout 6x a week. I work on a chemical plant so I get about 7k-10k steps daily plus my gym sessions after work. I go to bed around 9:30/10pm and kept waking up at 4:30 am alert and tired with my heart beating so fast. I couldn’t understand it since work wasn’t super stressful. LO AND BEHOLD, undereating! I wouldn’t have guessed cause I always felt full after my meals 🤷🏿♀️🤦🏾♀️. RANT OVER submitted by /u/Medium-Pain-1699 to r/PetiteFitness [link] [comments]

PSA: A deficit is the difference between the amount of calories you are eating and your TDEE, not a word that describes the no. of calories you eat.
Examples: If your TDEE is 2000 and you are eating 1200, your deficit is 800, not 1200. 2000-1200=800. If your TDEE is 1850 and you are eating 1500, your deficit is 350, not 1500. 1850-1500=350. ⭐ ~°•the more you know•°~ ⭐ submitted by /u/rowenaaaaa1 to r/WeightLossAdvice [link] [comments]

Warning for morbidly obese: My TDEE was all wrong. (vent)
I'm currently in a fairly dodgy situation health and housing wise; one upshot is that I am not weighing myself very often as my good scale is packed in the bowels of the sheds (in a box, under hundreds of other boxes) and the other scale isn't that reliable. So this reckoning has been delayed significantly. I started at ~166kg on 1 January and I have very consistently been eating under MyFitnessPal TDEE recommendation of 2200 kcals. A big part of my journey is that I am trying to recover from binge eating, so I set a rough daily minimum of 1800 kcals (plus having protein, fibre, small meals, etc.) So far so good. Well, I recently realised that I've only lost 6 kg and most of that was at the beginning. I was pretty confused! Of course my first thought was that I was eating too much without realising it, but thankfully I have a very samey diet and my husband, who makes my shakes, double checked with measuring cups and discovered we'd been OVER estimating how much I was eating. 🤦♀️ So then I realised I must be burning less calories than I thought. I had a bad injury a couple of years ago as well as have a brain disorder and am basically bedridden. So I was like, that has to be it. The MFP app assumes I'm getting up and going to work but I'm not. So I recalculated my TDEE and BMR using [this calculator], cross checking Mifflin St Jeor with Klatch-McArdle, which takes into account body fat percentage (which for me is obviously very high). Mifflin St Jeor results: BMR: 2315 kcal/day Sedentary TDEE: 2778 kcal/day Klatch-McArdle results: BMR: 1580 kcal/day Sedentary TDEE: 1896 kcal/day Of course I'm not losing weight. I'm literally eating at maintenance. I've now dropped my max calories to 1800 a day and my minimum is at 1600. Yes, I am adding exercise in, but I hoped to lose a bit more weight first just to reduce how hot and sweaty I get doing nothing. The worst part is that I was already pretty cross a lot- I think I was right on the edge- and I won't be less cross now, lol. But ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ submitted by /u/thedamnoftinkers to r/loseit [link] [comments]

Perks of being a short, ACTIVE woman: my TDEE starts with a 2.
This isn't a humblebrag post. Okay, maybe a little, but I do want to express how good it is to exercise and eat more vs being sedentary and eating less. Let me start with the exercise rant: I am 5'3, 117 lbs and 30F. On a maintenance journey. In fact, before this I was trying to GAIN weight. I am a recovering anorexic and depsite how much therapy I'll ever get (for stuff that will stick with me no matter how much I weigh,) I've accepted I will count calories until the day I die (trust me, I have a calorie counter in my head.) However, WITH therapy, I have created a plan that involves me eating/weighing ENOUGH. Fitness is key to me in my mental health recovery because exercise makes my brain go less crazy and think of things as they are vs whatever makes me feel a certain way at a moment. Besides, exercise is good for all of us. As far as foood...food is fuel, food's a social thing, food is enjoyment. I've been trying to build and maintain a bit of muscle (and also enjoy non active hobbies such as painting and knitting which I'd throw by the wayside in my sickest days to burn more calories...it's a multi-directional thing I've been recovering from.) Anyway. I clock in at around 15,000 steps a day. No matter what Reddit or my own disordered brain says, this is not anywhere NEAR sedentary and I need more than 1200 a day. Even as a short woman. This means I need to eat more. According to the TDEE calculator I found on Google and my own smartwatch, I do need at least 2,100 calories a day. I spent a long time being caught in the mire of "if I want to be skinny, eat as few calories as possible and exercise a lot, but log EVERYTHING as sedentary!" Look. I'm fine with not starving myself to a size 0 anymore. I want to be healthy and fit. If we exercise, we NEED fuel. And, sorry, I don't want to eat salad with a little fish and a low calorie dressing while my husband eats steak and potatoes. We had my brother over last weekend for a hike and some dinner afterward. Chicken enchiladas, Spanish rice and some grilled vegetables. Yes, they took an enchilada or two more than me and I chose between wine and dessert, but I feel like I got a portion that satisfied me. submitted by /u/LadyLassInRed to r/PetiteFitness [link] [comments]

Bad News! If you are obese, your TDEE is probably not as high as you think.
I started my journey at 427 lbs. I followed the advice and was shocked when I saw a sedentary TDEE of 3400 calories! That's a pound of fat a day! But I was not losing a pound a day despite eating only 1500 calories and exercising. I was losing maybe 1/4 pound per day (which is still substantial). Why? Why was I not getting 2000 calories per day of weight loss "credit?" The ugly secret of TDEE calculators is that they fall apart for obese people if you miss one very important calculation. Adipose tissue (fat) only burns about 2-3 calories per day while muscle burns 6-10 calories per day AT REST. I was 427 lbs on a frame built for 160. I was over 60% body fat. Plugging that into the TDEE calculators dropped my TDEE from 3373 to 2452. Almost 900 calories of difference. That is why I was not getting my credit. I was in 1/3 of the deficit I thought I was in. I am now down to 225. My sedentary TDEE is 2163 based on 35% body fat. It is 2267 without the body fat calculation. Again, a measurable amount off. If you are getting discouraged that you are not getting as much credit from your diet as you should, evaluate if you are actually eating in as much of a deficit based on your body fat percentage. submitted by /u/fingawkward to r/loseit [link] [comments]

My TDEE shot up by ~200 cals in May… because I made accurate tracking my monthly focus (maintaining 55lbs down)
F27 170-115. Lost 55lbs in 20 months and have been maintaining in my 115-119 maintenance range for around 8 months now. TDEE spreadsheet available here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/77qbun5ucz6tvan9dzxz1/Progress-Tracker-Template.xlsx?rlkey=6tmw1xhvvv6eh97lmtg6ezzt7&st=5z9qke1u&dl=0 After a death in the family and multiple weeks travelling for the funeral in March and April, the scale was moving up over my maintenance range and my TDEE was looking suspiciously low. I was tracking during this time but wasn’t being completely honest with myself when it came to weighing my food… particularly sweet treats. So in May I made it my goal to weigh all my treat foods. I recommitted to tracking as accurately as possible for the month and ✨magically✨ found an extra ~200 calories in my TDEE without increasing exercise. I have a suspicion that the “missing” calories were affiliated with the Mini Eggs in my fridge 🌝 As per usual I’m gonna yell from the rooftops about tracking AVERAGE weight in Happy Scale/Libra and AVERAGE calories and reviewing that data in a 30 cycle to avoid getting overly emotional about daily or weekly fluctuations. I’ve lost over 50lbs three times since turning 17, and this is the most healthy and sustainable method I have found. I’m almost 2 years binge free! submitted by /u/YarnAndYap to r/CICO [link] [comments]

How do you really know your TDEE?
Hello. I’m really curious to know if there is a reliable way to know your TDEE so you are able to calculate deficit and mantenaince calories?? I know you could simply track your intake and see if the scale moves up or down (or doesn’t move). I’ve been doing this for months, the only time I lost weight was when I ate under 800 kcal last year (I also got sick, don’t try it lol) and the other time I lost a lot of weight was the same (ate under 500 kcal). When I realised I was eating that little I upped my calories and now aim for 1600 kcal and 72-100 gr of protein daily. It’s been months and the scale doesn’t move either way. I look the same, my clothes fit the same. 1600 kcal I think is a healthy deficit, not too little but enough to make a change imo as I’m doing 75 hard so I work out twice a day. I feel bloated though from all the water I’m consuming (a gallon everyday). I could eat less but that makes the protein intake a bit difficult and that is my main goal lately. I’m 31F 167 cm and 76 kg (about 167 lb and 5.6”). So is there other way to know what is a real deficit but one that is healthy too? submitted by /u/Alarming-Llama16 to r/loseit [link] [comments]

We are doing TDEE wrong!
OK half baked thought but here we go Whenever I try and do my TDEE calories minus 500 I get STARVING by night and never succeed. I've been thinking about it a lot and I think I get it ..... I'm not eating to maintain my weight! I'm probably like a lot of people here where I'm trying to lose weight because my weight went up That means I'm NOT used to eating my maintenance calories, I'm eating more than that Maybe a better plan is to like take a week or so and just track without restricting, then cut 500 cal (or whatever) from that! I'm not sure if this makes sense but I feel like I cracked a code! Pls let me know if I'm off base submitted by /u/darklydemeter to r/loseit [link] [comments]

Finding out what my TDEE really is has changed how I eat!
I have fallen victim to stupid advice in the past, stuff like eating only 1200 calories a day, low fat / low carb, extra cardio… I stopped and started lots of “diets” because I would just start becoming so ravenous and grumpy it wasn’t sustainable! Even though I’m 32yo and only 5’1” I still felt like I needed to eat more than what I ate when I was “dieting”. This year I’ve been committed to eating at least 130-150g protein a day, and recently I’ve been tracking my TDEE using a spreadsheet which has been super interesting. After 6 weeks of tracking, I am pretty comfortable in saying my TDEE sits around 2000-2150 depending on my activity each day (I lift 4x a week and run 2x and swim 1x, plus daily walks with my dog). I am now eating at a slight deficit of 1850 a day and have lost 1kg in 4 weeks and not feeling at all restricted! I know tracking calories can lead to a bad relationship with food for some people, but I found for me it’s actually given me the confidence to eat more and feel strong! If you’re on the fence about tracking your TDEE as a petite girl, I highly recommend it :) submitted by /u/illustratedkate to r/PetiteFitness [link] [comments]

How do you guys have such high TDEE's?!
I see so many of you guys comment or post about how your maintenance/TDEE is in the 2000-2300 range and I would love to know how you do it. I take about 12-15,000 steps a day, and I am at the gym 5-6 days a week doing heavy weight lifting, and yet my Apple Watch fitness app tracker gives me an average of about 1600 calories a day for a TDEE. And I know that those calorie trackers usually over estimate :(. The only time it ever said 2000 calories was when I hiked for 3 hours and went to the gym and there's no way I am able to fit that in every day, haha. I don't track nearly as strict as I used to, but I would guess I consume about 1600-1700 calories a day to maintain, so I think the tracker is pretty accurate. I'm not even really trying to complain or change things, just more wondering how woman of similar build as me are able to eat 500-700 calories more than me and maintain. Are you guys all hiking for hours a day and going to the gym every day? Lol. Stats: 5'4, 110lbs, and pretty lean so maybe that has something to do with it. Thanks guys good luck on your journey! submitted by /u/Parking_Coast to r/PetiteFitness [link] [comments]

[SV] Figuring out your *actual* TDEE is a godsend
So I have no one else to share this with... I've been struggling since August 2018 with losing weight. Heaviest was 210. Goal is 130. Height is 5'3" I've been struggling with being in the 180s for months... I recalculated calories, went from 0-950 cals /day (yes there were many times I'd eat nothing) to eating 1700-1800/day and walking M-F for 2.25mi/day at 2.2mph and 5% incline. I told myself I'd not weigh myself for 2 weeks because honestly, the idea of eating 2x the amount of calories made me scared, but I was tired at being 18X lbs. Well... The siren call of the scale came to me, and I weighed myself... 170.2lbs This is the lightest I've been since starting. If I can hit 169 by 1/2 (the end of Yule), that'll be the best gift I can give myself because I'll officially be Overweight, not Obese. If you're doing 1200 cals and then working out and stuck and miserable, please please please look more into your TDEE. I did research, using https://exrx.net/Calculators/WalkRunMETs to figure out what level of fitness I fell under for the TDEE calculator. I finally feel normal, and to add to the victories, I haven't had a binging incident since starting the new calorie amount. Happy holidays everyone! submitted by /u/tranquilhippie to r/loseit [link] [comments]

I had an epiphany; My low TDEE as a short sedentary-ish woman isn't actually unfair like I used to think. Realizing this has made me so much less angry and basically changed my life.
As a short woman with a low tdee, I used to always feel bitter and short-changed. As one of the shortest people I know, I have corospondingly one of the lowest calorie "allowances". Everyone around me has a bigger "calorie allowance" and it felt really unfair for a long time. My bitterness was a huge distraction and the feeling of "unfairness" was used to "justify" more than one week-ruining binge. It felt so unfair when I was eating 1200 calories a day only losing a lb a week and then I go and read about people eating 1800 calories a day losing twice or even triple that. But I ran across, of all things, a political bumper sticker that changed my perspective. It read, When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression. It made me stop and think. In a hypothetical perfectly fair world, how much food would any single person get? I believe the answer is,"enough." I would not expect a 2 year old child to receive the same dinner as a 6 ft 6 adult. In fact, if they did receive the same amount of food, either the adult went hungry (not fair) or the child received more than their fair share (not fair). And with that thought experiment, I realized... I WAS that two-year old. I WAS that child who received more than their fair share. That's how I got to be 200+ lbs at barely 5 feet tall. I was eating SO MUCH MORE than I needed that I could literally lose over HALF my body weight and still be considered in the "healthy" BMI range. I'd been over-eating for my ENTIRE LIFE, and now, forced to confront the reality of what my ACTUAL fair share is, it's less than I had before, and that felt unfair. Once I realized this, I realized that the "unfair" part was not that I have to eat less now. The unfair part was that I was taking waaaaaaay too much before. Realizing this made me SO much less unhappy and bitter. Rather than complain in my head about my S/O who literally eats 3x what I do and doesn't gain weight (yay 98th percentile in height and a super-active lifestyle) I can spend my energy focusing on my goals rather than being pissed. I'm not posting this to chastise anyone or try to say "this is the right way to think about it and anyone who disagrees is wrong". I am posting this because this change in my thinking made my life SIGNIFICANTLY better. I'm less angry, I'm less resentful, and I don't feel that the universe is unfair against me personally anymore. I don't feel like I've been stuck with the short end of the stick anymore. After this epiphany, it's been much easier to simply focus on the work and take a BIG chunk of the negative emotions out of it. I wanted to share in case it might help someone else too. So maybe next time you catch yourself thinking, "It's so unfair I don't get to eat as much as s/he does!" you can stop and change your thought to, "It's so hard to come to terms with the fact that my WHOLE LIFE I've been over-eating and to change my habits to what my body actually needs." This put the power back in my hands, rather than it being the universe's fault for the fairness/unfairness. For me, that has made such an emotional difference. submitted by /u/BetterBeRavenclaw to r/loseit [link] [comments]

Fellow shorties, women, or anyone else with a low TDEE; It's not actually unfair you have to eat less than others. Realizing this made me so much less bitter and angry.
As a short woman with a low tdee, I have certainly felt the frustration of not being able to eat as much as others. More than that, I have seen probably at least a hundred posts of other people who have low TDEEs complaining about the unfairness that they don't get to eat as much because of their gender/height/lifestyle/disability/whatever, or how it takes longer to lose the same amount weight. I felt that way for a long time too. It feels so unfair when you are eating 1200 calories a day only losing a lb a week and you read about people eating 1800 calories a day losing twice or even triple that. But I ran across, of all things, a political bumper sticker that changed my perspective. It read, When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression It made me stop and think. Us low tdee-havers, we are that child who received more than our fair share. We've been over-eating for our ENTIRE LIVES, and now that we see what our ACTUAL fair share is, it's less than we had before, and that feels mean and unfair. Once I realized this, I realized that the "unfair" part was not that I have to eat less now. The unfair part was that I was greedy and taking too much before. Realizing this made me SO much less unhappy and bitter. Rather than complain in my head about my S/O who literally eats 3x what I do and doesn't gain weight (yay 98th percentile in height and a super active lifestyle) I can spend my energy focusing on my goals rather than being pissed. I'm not saying this because I think we all need to stop bitching. Frankly that will never happen. I am saying this because realizing it made my life better. I wanted to share in case it might help someone else too. So maybe next time you catch yourself thinking, "It's so unfair!" you can stop and correct your thought to, "It's so hard to admit I've been wrong my whole life and to change my habits." This puts the power back in your hands, rather than it being the universe's fault for the fairness/unfairness. submitted by /u/BetterBeRavenclaw to r/loseit [link] [comments]
