I was so excited to sit in the bulkhead premium plus seat of the inaugural London to San Francisco flight with the new seats, I guess travel bloggers were too. I have always seen the videos reviewing planes and products but never realize how bad it would be to sit next to one of them. This influencer was documenting for The Points Guy, and while I thought it was cool at first, I didn’t realize this meant he would be talking nearly the entire flight. He would do take after take, call the flight attendant over, and, most egregiously, leave the windows uncovered to get better lighting. I had planned on sleeping, but was always interrupted by his loud talking and filming. I actually think sitting next to a baby would’ve been better. I considered asking to switch seats, but really I think these influencers and travel sites should buy two seats out if they’re doing this. The crew seemed to know who he was, and what he was doing, welcoming him, and thanking him the end. So annoying that his flight was likely comped, and I paid extra for a better seat to try to get some rest. Anyway, just remember that all of these people documenting plane come at the cost of their neighbors! Run away if you have been misfortune of sitting next to one. (For what it’s worth, the new planes were great, the flight felt really smooth, and the extra oxygen flow helped a lot! I thought it was curious that every Polaris seats had feet facing aisles, no alternating slanted and straight rows.) submitted by /u/eddie2490 to r/unitedairlines [link] [comments]

Most people do not actually like traveling, they like having traveled
I know this sounds insane because people treat travel like the peak human experience, but a lot of the actual process kind of sucks. Airports are annoying, packing is annoying, sleeping somewhere unfamiliar is annoying, and half the time you are just hot, tired, hungry, and pretending a line for a famous thing is magical. What people really seem to love is the memory of it afterward. The photos, the stories, the feeling that they did something interesting with their life. Which is fine, honestly. I just think there is a big difference between enjoying the trip while it is happening and enjoying the idea of being someone who travels. Obviously some people genuinely love every part of it, but I think for a lot of us the highlight is talking about it later with better lighting and no jet lag. submitted by /u/limitown to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

I travel 100+ nights a year for work. Here’s how I travel.
With repetition comes experience. Here’s some stuff I’ve found that help me travel with less stress. Leave early. I know this sounds like your parents but I would rather have an extra 90 minutes to kill at the airport than having a traffic jamb or a detour make me miss a flight. I can still work in a booth/chair at the airport if I need it. Yes I’ve heard the argument of the “hours gained/lost” by waiting but if it’s a difference of working for an hour at home or at the airport with no ‘stress’ then choose the latter. Spray liquid (not gel) hand sanitizer, not aerosol a pump. Good for your hands, a public toilet seat in an emergency or the random sticky surface in the rental car. Never turn down the sanitizing wipes on the flight. See #2. I personally use them for my noise-canceling headphones or backups for the above. Quality noise canceling headphones with an audio jack. Don’t just rely on the bluetooth working on the flight. Even if I’m not watching a movie, I put on some music and read a book. Have at least one playlist with 4-5 hours of music/podcasts downloaded. Even if you’re driving and hit a bad reception area you can still play music. Buy a battery pack. When you absolutely need a plug in the airport, you’ll never find it. Even better, if you rely on your laptop for work, buy one that can output 65-100w from a single line (not combined output). Yes they are heavier but takes out the guess work. Use the clothes hangers with the clips in the hotel to hold the blackout curtains together. If you’re a light sleeper, get the highest floor possible in the hotel. No kids running the hall on the floor above. Learn to sleep with background noise. I use an app on my phone at home and on the road. Same app, same white noise sound. I travel with Advil/tylenol and 4 mucinex. If I hit a wall then I can make it through a couple days until I can get home or to a pharmacy without having to panic. Grab a couple of the wrapped utensils from a fast food place, a few napkins and a couple straws. Nothing more frustrating than getting food on the run and then trying to eat your pasta without silverware or a to-go cup and no straw. I forgot this one so it’s a late addition: add a large carabiner to your back pack (6” ‘stroller hook’ sized). You can use it to hang your bookbag from stall walls or in a variety of places if there’s no hook. Also comes in handy for water bottles or ball caps or even a grocery bag when you’re running out of hands. There’s plenty more but this is getting long already. Love to hear your thoughts. Update: this blew up a lot more than I expected. Thank you everyone for your inputs, tips and conversations. submitted by /u/NoSafeHaven84 to r/travel [link] [comments]

We are too obsessed with traveling
Travel is the Millennial version of "keeping up with the Jones". People like to poke at Boomers for their obsession with lots of toys and possessions, but Millennials / Gen Z have their own obsession with checking off the experience and places been bucket list, and it's every bit as unbalanced. 1. Travel funnels experiences. The classic argument for travel is that it broadens people's experiences in life, but does it really? There's some truly adventurous folks who go far away and really wonder off the beaten path - but by and large, when people go beyond the weekend 2 hr drive range, they stick to "best of" lists. Although there's something exotic to far away locations, travelers are really just experiencing all the same sights and experiences as everyone else traveling. National Parks are the prime example. We each have our own special "side of the pond" on this planet earth with the radius around where we live. Let's explore the uniqueness of our own section of the world instead of swimming over to check out all the already crowded popular spots on other shores. 2. Do we need more experiences? I truly question if anyone these days is actually understimulated? It seems to be the opposite, where people are stressed, anxious, and overcommitted. Millennials have already had way more experiences in their lifetime already than what humans throughout history have had, how many more experiences does a person need? If people really wanted exposure to different worldviews, they would go talk to the immigrant next door and ask them about their home country and life. What it does seem that we need more of is social connection and relationships. But travel gets in the way of building those. 3 days of work minimum for each flight - time to research and book, time in transit, and time to recover / do laundry etc when you're back. That's 3 days you are not out socializing. And we wonder why we have problems retaining freindships? 3. Locals don't really want tourists. Sure the people visiting are enjoying their experiences, but are the locals enjoying your presence? I don't have to post links here, you see it on your news feed with headlines like: "People in Maui were brought up to resent tourists", "Italian official calls tourists 'vandals' after bad behavior", "Record traffic and lines getting into Zion"... True, tourists bring money, but it's simply a chore / job catering to them, unless it's in a location sparsely visited, which sadly is not where most people go. Not all exchanges have to have this guest / servant type of behavior. Take art - buying or experiencing a piece of art allows you to inwardly travel to the creativity of another individual, meanwhile sending them $$$ to propel their creative journey forward. 4. It's wasteful. Recent estimate I saw was 8-10% of all emissions result from travel and vacation. That's huge. If Millennials & Gen Z were actually concerned about climate change and resources, they'd think twice before booking the flight. Obviously I'm not saying to never get on a plane again, just that we need to tone travel down. Edit #1, In no way am I saying do not be adventurous. We should all get outside our bubble and earnestly seek new experiences. The problem is people confuse travel with adventure - you can fly across the world and never get outside the familiar and you can get multitudes of cultural mind opening experiences within our own cities if we seek them out. I can't believe the number of comments assuming I'm some simpleton, you are exactly perpetuating this confusion. Edit #2 I'm also not saying don't explore. Yes people should travel some and get international exposure, especially to developing countries. What I'm saying is our culture has gone overboard with the checking the boxes - you don't need to see 23 different countries to be 'well rounded'. And it's a distance thing - exploring our own 3 hour drive radius means we're likely to try out there off the beaten path things, which may be a undiscovered gem or a dud. The attitude that just because you didn't leave your state, that's not 'traveling' is a misguided mindset. submitted by /u/Tiny-Pomegranate7662 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Traveling only appeals to boring people or people who haven’t traveled
I’ve traveled everywhere. The UK, Germany, France, India, Bangladesh, about half of the US (including California, Las Vegas, New York, Minneapolis, Tennessee, Hawaii, you get the idea) Not once have I ever felt “yeah, I’m experiencing something I couldn’t back at home” When you travel you have to leave most of your belongings behind, so if you have a hobby that requires any sort of specialized equipment too bad. I’ve hiked on mountains, I’ve swam in oceans, Ive been on the London eye, I’ve run through every single tourist attraction there is and not once have I felt “yeah that was worth giving 1 week of my life away” And I’m not some anti social weirdo, I go out of my way to interact with other people. Nobody is different, at the core of it people still act like people nothing more and nothing less. Yeah sure there are differences, but they aren’t interesting. A quick google search or a reddit post will tell you the major “””””””””culture shocks””””””””””” anyway. You wanna know my favorite part of traveling? The fucking trip. The plane ride, the train to the hotel, the taxi caught in traffic for 4 hours. Unironically this is my favorite part because I get to fucking sleep Whenever someone says they love traveling I immediately think they either haven’t traveled much or they are just so god damn boring they find entertainment by fucking moving the ground under their feet submitted by /u/adeisgaming to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]
