US FCC classifies "routers produced in a foreign country" as "prohibited from being imported for use or sale in the U.S". What will the impact be on Protectli, Ubiquiti and similar devices?
See the FCC's announcement: https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-updates-covered-list-include-foreign-made-consumer-routers You need to press on "Pdf" or "Docx" or "Txt" under "News Release" Separately, this is the FCC covered list: https://www.fcc.gov/supplychain/coveredlist Where it is stated "Routers^ produced in a foreign country, except routers which have been granted a Conditional Approval by DoW or DHS" are on the covered list. The ban only applies to new devices--so previous routers that have been approved do not get automatically banned. All Ubiquiti routers are made in China, Vietnam and Taiwan. All Protectli firewalls are made in China. Anyone got any idea whether it's now illegal to purchase any new devices from these companies? I am not a lawyer so I am hoping someone smarter here can correct me. Per the News Release: "What does this mean? "New devices on the Covered List, such as foreign-made consumer-grade routers, are prohibited from receiving FCC authorization and are therefore prohibited from being imported for use or sale in the U.S. This update to the Covered List does not prohibit the import, sale, or use of any existing device models the FCC previously authorized. "This action does not affect any previously-purchased consumer-grade routers. Consumers can continue to use any router they have already lawfully purchased or acquired. Dear Ubiquiti, why?
I mean, the APs are good, the gateways are actually pretty decent... but why does your compact switches lineup suck so bad? It is on purpose that they somewhat lack something you need? And why are these switches all with completely random and different form factors? Even cheap Chinese brands got this stuff sorted... And, by the way, can't they be black like the U7 Pro XG instead of that ugly cheap "lighthouse" white? Just wandering... Thanks submitted by /u/dlindlondlan to r/Ubiquiti [link] [comments]

Pro Tip: you should have a Claymore in your inventory at all times. It’s probably the best item in the entire game considering how cheap it is relative to its performance output and ubiquity. MIDA sells 3 per day, 100 credits each.
You need to have a claymore on you, all the time, period. No excuses. Claymores punch insanely above their weight both cost and rarity wise. Even an enemy player with full health and a purple shield will take substantial damage from a claymore, allowing for easy cleanup. And for lower tier shields along with even minor damage sustained…you can outright drop people with one. They can also be used to annihilate bots or chunk gold/purple ones for extremely cheap. Just be careful to set them ahead of time, then lure the bots onto them…if you are setting one and a bot sees you, they will bullrush you and you might blow yourself up lol. You can also combine them with a smoke. Assassins seem to just run into any smoke no matter what, since they are confident that their stealth will save them…only to be surprised by the dangers inside. Moths to a flame. But that’s not all, claymores are also incredible pseudo proximity alarms. If they down someone, great. But even having one shot or detonated is loud, and you’ll be alerted. Real world example—my team was leaving a POI very weak from a fight, and we thought we heard another squad, but we could not find them even with a Thief drone. So we setup a claymore on one of the main paths as we made our way to the Exfill…and sure enough about 30s later we all heard it go off and my buddy got a thing in the log showing he downed someone with the claymore. We hauled ass to the Exfill even faster lol. If you needed more convincing, even being totally aware of a claymore doesn’t make them useless. In a tense firefight, they also serve as excellent zone control. Repositioning is very powerful, so the enemy might not want to shoot your claymore even if they can, just to avoid making more noise or give away their position. And if you already used one with success, they might be wary to push in fear of you having more. Lastly, if you are 100% going to get pushed and you think you have zero hope of survival—you can quickly drop one at your feet. Not worth it really if solo, but in trios, you can inflict a lot of splash damage on potentially multiple enemies or maybe even drop one or two. This is an even better “last resort” if you have a Self-Revive. Shotguns are strong, but you can heavily punish their aggro with an around-the-corner-claymore-surprise. Switching to your claymore is faster than healing lmao. I’ve obviously always loved how strong claymores are, but I only got to truly appreciate them even more by doing Rook runs on Outpost. They are seemingly the most powerful piece of equipment and maybe even gear in the entire game. I was able to repeatedly either fight entire squads or just escape or be alerted to danger—so many times. 1 month with Ubiquiti (so far)
We recently started testing with Ubiquiti to replace an existing Meraki deployment. After a very small test, we replaced about 30% of our APs with Ubiquiti APs. Then, we replaced two 48-port access switches with Ubiquiti switches. We have a small environment with only 2 physical sites, about 75 APs, 1 core switch, and about 15 48-port access switches. We are using self-hosted Unifi OS running on Rocky Linux 10 on Proxmox. So far: --We noticed an issue with a single wireless client. It was a very old Android phone, and for whatever reason, it repeatedly connected and disconnected (once about every 2 seconds). The "solution" was to disable the 6 GHz radio for that one SSID; we honestly don't know why this "fixed" it. And it may not be a Ubiquiti-specific issue because this was the first 6 GHz radio we ever had in our environment. Eventually, we will turn on the radio again. --We had some weird intermittent client connection issues with the switches. We quickly reverted back to Meraki for these. We probably could have spent more time and energy on it and possibly fixed it, but it was just too much to deal with at the time. The issue did not occur in the lab testing, so I am not sure what it is. We may revisit it. So our overall direction right now: use Ubiquiti for APs, not switches. This could change in either direction over time. I'll post again in a few months. submitted by /u/FatBook-Air to r/sysadmin [link] [comments]

Grato.

Ubiquiti needs to make a smart thermostat
That's it, that's the post. But seriously, how did they get to EV chargers and UPS before this one? Seems like a no-brainer, homerun kinda thing. OMG it could be a Superlink hub! Considering the location of thermostats in most folks' homes that'd be a slam dunk. Or maybe even have an AP integrated. And CO sensor! And smoke detector! Ubiquiti. WHY WOULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN??
UPDATE: This occurred at Midnight EST last night when updates were set in the UniFi dashboard to automatically install by default. The system rebooted after the update occurred. It then showed the "failed" error as shown in the pictures I posted. As I was out of town at the time, the only thing I could try was to restart the array via the dashboard, so I did. After 15 minutes of it saying "mounting", it said the exact same failed message again. I thought about proceeding the what UniFi recommended in the failed message: Delete the storage pool and start over, but since it was late and I needed to get up in the AM, and coupled with the fact that I didn't have my laptop with me, I decided to just wait until I got home today. THANK GOD I DIDN'T LISTEN TO UNIFI'S RECOMMENDATION AND DELETED THE STORAGE POOL, because an hour and a half later, SUDDENLY EVERYTHING WAS BACK UP LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED! Everything is fine now, the array expansion has since completed at around 3PM today, and I lost ZERO data (Thank GOD). That said, still, NONE of this should have been allowed to happen, and then compounding the issue with UniFi instructing me to just delete the array and start over? Had I listened, I would have ACTUALLY lost the whole storage pool of data. Simply, though thank God all is well with my array now, NONE of this should have happened the way it did, and I hope this helps some poor soul in the future who almost deleted there storage pool at UniFi's recommendation like I almost did (Unless Ubiquiti actually bothers to fix this). --------- Original Post: I want my money back for this NAS and to never touch UNAS products again. I am BEYOND livid. This isn't about data backup. I have the critical stuff backed up. Ubiquiti I have just one question for your crazy little minds... WHY WOULD YOU ALLOW AN AUTOMATIC UPDATE TO HAPPEN DURING A RAID EXPANSION THAT WAS IN PROGRESS??? All of my data is GONE because you couldn't bother to write a flag in your code to, idk, NOT allow an update to install if a critical process was in progress??? I will never trust UNAS products for any sort of critical storage for any company I work for ever again. and yes, somehow, I left the auto-update flag on on this array, but regardless, WHY WOULD YOU ALLOW THAT CONDITION TO HAPPEN?? submitted by /u/SchNiVas to r/Ubiquiti [link] [comments]

Is Ubiquiti too much for me?
Requesting some advice. I've been working off a single TP-Link router for a while and a Google WIFI mesh before that and want to upgrade my "network." Is Ubiquiti too much for me? A little bit of insight into my existing layout. I'm including a layout of my home below. My home is right at 1000sqft in size. I have a 1GB FTTH that is at the back corner of the kitchen. Provider then ran a network cable from a keystone there to the Current Router Connection location via a hole through the baseboard. The only things that are wired are sitting under the TV on that wall: (AppleTV, Eufy Homebase, UGREEN NAS). Everything else in my home depends on wireless. We have a desk on the opposite wall in the living room and my son has his computer in his room. What I have in my head is to run network from the current FTTH connection to the red closet listed toa a gateway/switch. Then run from there, 5-6 physical lines to the "NEW" areas listed. My current guess is the following equipment: Cloud Gateway Max or Fiber Lite 8 or 16 POE U7 Pro or Wall (probably sitting on top of desk in living room. 2 or 3 Flex Minis as needed at the desk and TV areas Am I missing something? Am I overthinking it? Should I keep it simple and just move my existing router centrally, get a basic dumb switch and still do the wiring I'm thinking of doing? https://preview.redd.it/gppnr9owqahg1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=eef715f647cd2c36cd92d336e4873e3c14fd32b2 submitted by /u/mikeoverton to r/Ubiquiti [link] [comments]

What invention rivals the jet engine in terms of sheer improbability-to-ubiquity?
The jet engine occupies a strange place in the history of invention. The basic concept is simple enough to sketch on a napkin: continuous combustion in a tube, using some of the energy to compress incoming air, the rest to propel itself forward. But everything about the implementation seems like it shouldn’t work (extreme temperatures, turbine blades spinning inches from an inferno, keeping a flame lit in a hurricane-force airstream, materials pushed to their absolute limits) It had every reason to fail. When Whittle and von Ohain were developing it in the 1930s, experts dismissed it as impossible. And yet not only did it work, it became one of the most reliable machines ever built. Airlines measure engine failures per millions of flight hours. We strap our families into aircraft without a second thought. That arc, from “this seems physically implausible” to “so efficient and reliable it’s boring”, feels rare. What other inventions followed a similar path? Not just “important” or “transformative,” but specifically: conceptually audacious, practically hostile to implementation, and yet now seamlessly ubiquitous. submitted by /u/mrv958 to r/AskEngineers [link] [comments]

Went all-in on Ubiquiti for my first home. Zero regrets (wife-approved!)
Hello fellow Ubiquiti brothers 👋 Just wanted to share my joy and excitement with my very first Ubiquiti setup for my first home in Singapore. The place is relatively small by international standards (96 sqm), but housing is really expensive here in Singapore so gotta make do with it. Many local people would probably call this setup overkill for the space. But as we all know… there’s no such thing as overkill in this sub 🤪 Because of where the fibre point is located, I couldn’t do a traditional rack mount, so I had to get creative and mount everything vertically instead. Also terminated all the cables myself for every room, honestly one of the most tiring DIY projects I’ve ever done. That said, I’m extremely happy with the performance, both in terms of connection quality and security. The biggest win? My wife telling me she no longer experiences lag or stuttering when streaming (unlike at our parents’ place), and realizing her mobile games no longer have ads 😅 Definitely didn’t expect that kind of feedback. Current setup: Internet Speed from ISP - 5gbps UDM Pro Max USW Pro Max 16 PoE U7 Pro XGS Flex Mini 2.5G ×2 G5 Turret Ultra ×3 RJ45 10G SFP x2: one SFP with Direct Attached Cable to the Switch while the other connects directly to my U7 Pro XGS 60W 10Gbe PoE++ Adapter for full speed connection to U7 Pro XGS Now I’m already thinking about what else I could add to this setup… any suggestions from the community? 👀 submitted by /u/foxalone to r/Ubiquiti [link] [comments]

Hate for Ubiquity?
I'm not interested in starting an argument and I do definitely have my options, but I'm genuinely curious to hear what people have to say. I'm working for a new company, and in the year before I joined, they made a full system switch from Ubiquity to Meraki. (Wether the move to Meraki was good or not, that's not what I'm interested in.) All of the team members talk about how bad Ubiquity is. I come from an MSP where a fair number of our clients had full Ubiquity networks with little to no problems. I'm just interested in what about Ubiquity is problematic. I WILL SAY, their old products had some problems... And the data breach they had in 2021 was... Not good (to put it lightly). I genuinely want to hear from others what your experience has been. submitted by /u/Dizzy_Hyena_3077 to r/networking [link] [comments]

Rant: Ubiquiti is junk and I am sick of them
I went back to college to finish a degree a few years ago and since I have taken a few odd jobs to help people configure their home/small business networks when they upgrade to modern prosumer gear, and that always means its Ubiquiti. I get they're cheap, well marketed, have out of the box remote features, and give you much more control over whatever you can walk out of Best Buy with... At first. They most certainly aren't cheap, nothing ever is when you subscribe to a closed ecosystem. The remote features consist of a cloud integration that you shouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, and a mediocre VPN that you need to use their app for and doesn't work on Linux, barring maybe Debian. And that is the nicest things I can say about them. Here is a short list of things that have made me beat my head on the wall, just from the last 3 months: 0 L2 IPv6 controls: What happens if a rogue device broadcasts an RA on your network? Your devices start picking up IPv6 addresses, and you have no choice in the matter, even if IPv6 is turned off and there is no route, you just get DOSed. Yes, this actually happened to me. The rogue device was an early model Alexa, apparently they just do that. Maybe this can be avoided with some of the higher end EdgeSwitches, but none of the gear my clients had. USW Lite (7 or 8) switches may be incompatible with some clients NIC: I had a device with a Realtek 2.5G NIC, it just flapped, could not connect no matter what. Only device combo this ever happened with. Realtek could be just as guilty, I will just be mad at both. U6 devices fuck up VLANs: If you are looking at these then you might as well just take the cash out of your wallet and take a big steamy shit on it, that's about what Ubiquti will ship you in the U6 box anyway. I like to set my native VLAN as a black hole over trunks. The port on the back (port 5) of the U6 will always be a trunk if it is plugged into the main network. So configure the upstream port to be a trunk, right? If you do that then any wifi for VLAN 1 will be put onto the native VLAN that port 5 is assigned, as well as any of the ethernet ports on the bottom, regardless of if you configure those ports to be a different one. On top of that, you would have to make a second black hole with DHCP enabled because the U6 is too dumb to work on a native VLAN with a closed off subnet, but maybe I was not persistent enough. "Adoption" is a joke: The whole design of this ecosystem with a single, authoritative configuration "controller" is just horrible. Yeah, it might save you from running around, plugging into your individual devices, setting a static ip, then logging in to set the IP and configuration, but once you do that it is always there. With Ubiquiti, if you change something and a device is no longer able to connect, then you get to go over there and reset it, wipe everything, and then come back to the controller and adopt it, and at this point your patience will be thin enough that it feels like it takes ages. Not only that, but it basically enforces DHCP everywhere you put a Ubiquiti device, you could get around it, but it is pretty clear that you are expected to plug it in, let it get an IP from DHCP, and leave it alone. If you are just buying the AP pucks, then you can probably get by with Ubiquiti, in fact, I can't think of anything wrong with the pucks aside from lacking the ability to configure them directly and the lack of IPv6 controls. But every single time I am called to help someone out, they have invested in the Dream machine, or as I like to call it: The Ubiquiti Nightmare Machine, which is actually the least of the problems with the network, it just sets them up to be ingrained in the ecosystem. Maybe if you bought it as an NVR and not a router I could see it, but I haven't screwed with the camera side enough. The cameras actually just worked, I had one running through an unadopted U6 and USW that were being sent to the wrong subnet, no fucking clue how, but at least that was robust. Anyway, that is mostly it. I just feel like I am being tortured by these things, but i don't want to turn down a little odd job. Maybe I am a complete dumbass and I am wrong about everything here, but I really don't think so. I don't use much Ubiquiti equipment myself, I like OPNsense routers and Mikrotik switches, but I have been using an AP-AC Lite since it was new and it has been okay, but its seeing some age and I am kind of just curious if anyone has any one has any suggestions on what to replace it with that is around the same price point. Also, suggestions on a fully local camera system that isn't Windows/Blue Iris dependent, or use a shitty, closed off NVR, and also IP phones. I have been curious about a camera system myself and want to be able to answer questions about these things if someone asks me. submitted by /u/RatChariotRS to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]
