We're experiencing gaps in our luxury vinyl plank flooring (Gaia Athena), with the largest gap in our kitchen (see photos). The flooring was installed about 2 years ago by a licensed contractor. The situation: Gaps appeared approximately 2 years post-installation Contractor says it's due to the "top material," not workmanship Multiple gaps/separations throughout the floor, not just one area Contractor is willing to fix it but claims it may not be a permanent solution Proposed fix: The contractor wants to remove the baseboard at the kitchen sink cabinet and drill a hole to access the back of the cabinet. They would then "push the planks back into place and lock them together." However, they: Did not guarantee it would be a long-term fix Did not explain the process in detail Did not mention using adhesive or addressing root causes My questions: Is the "top material" a legitimate cause for gaps in LVP, or is this an installation issue? Does the proposed fix sound correct? Should adhesive be used? If there are gaps in multiple locations, does that suggest installation problems rather than material defects? What should a proper fix include to prevent gaps from reopening? Any help is appreciated I'm trying to determine if I should push back on the contractor or get a second opinion. Worked with a carpenter for our new apartment setup. Very happy with the results. We had to go full floor to ceiling to allow sufficient space for 2000 records (I’m trying to scale down from 2500, mostly holding onto jazz, soul and funk). Currently having a custom step ladder created to allow easier access to the top shelf. The unit is made of oak veneer and solid oak on the bottom half. I’ve also installed an ambient light concealed above the turntable. New speakers are on their way. Something custom from Arda Audio. Hello, Our 6sqm kitchen in our old timber-framed house, built in 1892, was a bit sad: off-white cabinets and a dark, stain-prone vinyl floor. We decided to completely remove the floor and lay natural stone instead. We chose the vibrant Travertine Scabos in a Herringbone pattern. The floor is now the highlight of the kitchen, radiates vitality, and is incredibly easy to maintain. I purchased 2mm vinyl flooring through a family friend for a family room (addition to back of the house) and hired an installer to put in. He put in the leveling compound on the concrete day1 and on day 2 started installing the vinyl but said the vinyl planks were coming out of the box bowed (hamburger and hot dog style) so I had him stop installation and contacted the family friend that sold it to me. The seller is saying it is definitely a moisture issue from the concrete, and recommended using a high moisture adhesive (Resolute by Taylor adhesives). I had a previous company (that refinished hardwood for me) test the concrete slab and it was below 3 MVER in mid October and the installer used a moisture detector that also didn’t show out of the ordinary levels. My boyfriend of 2 years has been amazing in every way, but I feel like it's hopeless when it comes to me trying to be romantic and buying him gifts. When it comes to holidays and birthdays, he buys me very romantic things like flowers, fancy dinners out, experiences like a spa day, and other things that I think are normal gifts. When it comes to me buying him gifts, he has a strict thing where he just tells me ahead of time to buy this because he wants it. I get that's fine since he want to make sure I'm getting something he likes, but the gifts he asks for are very weird. For example, one time he suggested a gift of a drill kit because his current one was wearing out. Another time he just wanted a case of a specific brand of beer. The last time which was his birthday, he wanted to buy some vinyl flooring to replace a couple of broken planks and we went together so I'd pick the right one. Yup. 1995 F150 standard cab with a bench seat. I know the factory floor wasn't exactly flat either, but this seems really lumpy, and there's a lot of negative space under the vinyl. Got charged about $150 more than I was expecting, $650 total. Just for the install, I provided a pre-contoured floor and pre-cut sound deadening underlay. They said it was because the cold weather caused it to be a lot more labour. I figured they would have at least used a heat gun or something to smooth it out during installation. I paid professional installers for laminate flooring and it started to chip and crack after a few weeks Full disclaimer that was a few years ago (though it continues to chip and crack) I am considering redoing the floors, possibly myself to save money, but before I do I wanted to know what could have caused this. We had the original installers come in (a month after original install) and take a look and felt like they were gaslighting us, essentially telling us the floors got too much foot traffic or the furniture on it was too heavy. There are 2 people in the house and the furniture involved is a desk and a rolling office chair. I wouldn't expect any of that to cause quick and continued degradation of the flooring. They even replaced the broken boards and after that they continued to fall apart. If I recall correctly we disputed the charge. I have a different kind of laminate floor throughout the rest of my house (couldn't get the same kind because they don't make it anymore) and it has never had any such issues. Is this just a case of poor material? Is it possible I use my office chair so impressively that the floor crumbles beneath me? For context, about 2600(ish) sq ft home. L shaped staircase. We went to a local owned store where the owner and his son install as well. I understand there were a few custom things the install would entail due to the lip on each stair, but I was baffled to get this quote. A woman I know works for a rental housing company located in here in Canada. The housing company needed one of their units fixed up before another family moved in. One of the maintenance men, was tasked with replacing the counter top and for lack of a better way to say this, is a foreigner, and painted the counter top first. Storytime: I finally have the gameroom I've wanted for years. It took many, many hours and late nights but it's finally done. My wife and I bought this house last year as we outgrew our last place (kids). This room needed a lot of work which was primarily done by me. I dont have a background in anything related to renovation/contracting but I do have the internet and have had some help with the flooring from my father and FIL. Down below I linked an album showing the progress made over the past year. DIY stuff: For flooring I laid down high traffic vinyl planking across the entire basement (~850sqft) over an underlayment which rests ontop of tile. For paint, my color scheme was inspired by the most legendary game console ever, the NES. The walls reflect the two tone greys along with the semi-gloss black and red accents. The floor trim was measured, cut, and installed by me (very satisfying to get this done). The shelving I measured, cut, primed, and painted from poplar wood since it's a stronger than pine which tends to bend. Poplar is a great stiff wood and is cheaper when compared to oak. I got the idea for these style shelves from youtubers Saturday Morning Gamer and Morts Garage. The lighting is slim LED lighting that has a "nite mode" at the flick of a switch. I have never done electrical beyond changing a fixture so this was a fun learning project. I also installed a modern lutron dimmer for dimming on both lighting types. All the cardboard and fragile things are lifted well off the ground because I got some toddlers that love to grab things. I decided to go with custom shelves because I didn't want to have those cheap media tower shelves that sit on the floor. My house is also a raised ranch so I had to figure out how to make shelves from scratch to go above the permanent shelf that surrounds the room. https://imgur.com/a/uMVwHYK Now that the DIY stuff is out of the way... For games, I only collect what I used to play back in childhood and ones that interest me. I'm not into collecting full sets or games that are "valuable". I have about 900-ish games and I'm mostly content. Looking to add more boxed games but i'm in no rush. I always wanted a gameroom that is practical hat is meant to ENJOYED. I will never understand the museum mentality where everything is in glass cases with no where to sit down. I try to beat as many games as I can each year, thanks to inspiration from the "games we played" videos from MyLifeinGaming on YouTube. I'm currently having a blast playing Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS. I recently 103%'d Donkey Kong Country 3 on SNES, then before that beat Resident Evil 2 and 3 on Gamecube. The CRT is a 32" Sony trinitron KV-FS120 which I have a Wii, PS2, and OG Xbox running through a component switcher. The SNES and N64 are on S-video, and the NES is on composite. The 55" Sharp LED has an HDMI switcher for Xbox One, 360, PS4 Pro, Switch 1 and 2. Everything is run through a surround sound receiver and sounds amazing. I moved to a new place a few days ago, and in the process of unpacking we've noticed that something in the house is dyeing our feet black. The house has some vinyl flooring, which I've already mopped in an attempt to clean whatever was making our feet dirty, but I suspect the culprit is the new carpeting the landlord just installed, because the cat is also being dyed black. Has anyone heard of this happening? Any tips how I can clean out a carpet thar seems to be either leeching out its dye or somehow very dirty? Hi all and happy new year! Looking for some advice please. We had luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) laid in our new kitchen extension by a flooring company here in the UK. They did not check moisture levels beforehand. It was covered with protective mats on their advice, which were not stuck but free. We subsequently had our kitchen installed. When the mats were removed all the LVF came up. Some of the tiles were now under the kitchen units and so have been left. The remainder are now stacked, covered in glue and look really bad. The flooring company is waiting for moisture levels to drop further but the tiles now look terrible and I’m worried the ones left will not be stuck properly. What would people advise please…? Should the tiles be ok to re-use and will the floor be even/flat if they’re re-laid? Will the tiles that are part-under the units be ok to leave even if they’re lifting too? I replumbed and rewired the water heater to the basement, rewired the stove so it has a recessed outlet, replaced the floor, installed new sink, removed old chimney flu cover, patched a bunch of holes, replaced sheet vinyl over the asbestos linoleum that is covering original douglas fir flooring i was hoping to refinish, built all my cabinets from scratch, purchased and installed new sink, stained and oil-base-polyurethaned butcher block counters, put in a new backsplash, purchased ducted and installed new microwave hood, and added a couple new outlets all for under $3,000. Just 6 or 7 years ago all I had was some crappy folding black and decker screwdriver, not even a drill. My dad got me a dewalt 20v max drill for christmas about 6 years ago and I went from there. I'm not afraid to tackle many projects now. I had a 3 month old at the start and finished right before his 1st birthday. Worked mostly 2 days per week and I don't have a garage, so each day I could work, I had to take all my tools out of my exterior entry basement and work under a tent and tarps to stay dry from the rain. Over the past year my brother and I spent our free time gutting and completely renovating an apartment. The previous tenant had left the place totally trashed and full of roaches. Like thousands of roaches (refer to furnace pic). Enjoy some pics of the before, during and after.
