Happy Friday. While this relates to Texas I find that it pertains to everywhere we have lived. I am very interested in moving to Washington DC, what should I know?
I visited DC, and honestly, I loved the city...its a good balance between north and south... yet I would like to know, what did I likely not see while I was there? a few notes: - great metro - tiny chinatown - felt very gentrified....almost like a pleasantville - hot summers (I'm okay with) - moderate to HCOL, which is still lower than my current city - is it multi-cultural? - fairly easy to meet new people? - lots of city events / fun? submitted by /u/ElectroAcousto to r/SameGrassButGreener [link] [comments]

Ever had a trip you loved… but the people you went with hated it? That was my 2-week trip in Washington, DC.
They hated how compact everything was, were melting in the July humidity (which is funny because they’re from Florida), and thought the Smithsonians didn’t live up to the hype. But honestly, I still loved it lol. Washington DC is an architectural and cultural feast for me. There’s this intense energy about it. Like DC doesn’t really do “neutral.” Everyone care deeply about something. It’s passionate, messy, but fascinating to observe. Everywhere i went felt layered — from National Cathedral and the Basilica, to the gilded mansions along Embassy Row, to all the museums. It’s so diverse, so full of character & history, and weirdly beautiful in its contradictions. One moment that really stuck with me: I’ll admit I was nervous visiting the U.S. Capitol — especially post-Jan 6. I expected it to feel tense or intimidating. But it was surprisingly calm. I even rode a scooter right up to the steps and no one said a thing. Lol Standing there though, I felt this wave of gratitude. The U.S. is far from perfect. but as an immigrant, moving here gave me opportunities I’d never have had. Financial freedom, creative freedom, the chance to just be myself without as much judgment. It took me seven long years to become a citizen, and honestly, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Im grateful to have the opportunity to vote and voice my opinions, because for 10 years i couldnt. I hope people remember that this is land of the “starting” and don’t pull the ladder up. And yes, I know that sounds a bit sappy, but anyway. Now onto the fun part: Some of the Smithsonians were a little underwhelming IMO — but a few absolutely blew me away: - Smithsonian American Art Museum + National Portrait Gallery (so good) - National Museum of Asian Art — the Peacock Room is stunning - Hirshhorn Museum — usualy not a contemporary art fan, but they have some really cool & famous grafitti artist collection like Banksy’s. If you like quirky experiences, - O Museum in The Mansion. It’s basically seven historic apartments stitched together with hundreds of hidden doors. We spent the night wandering around like kids on a scavenger hunt. For fellow architecture nerds, check out: - Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens - Larz Anderson House - Tudor Place (slightly eerie in the best way) - Huerich House Museum, which also has a great biergarten in the back And if you’re a cat person — Crumbs & Whiskers was such a sweet spot. It’s a cat café, and every visit goes toward adoption funding. Go support them If you want more of a hip scene- highly recommend Metro bar or Union market. Area is very funky & chill. (Edit 1. Wow thank you kind stranger for the award. My first ever! Made my day.) (Edit 2. My dumb dumb thumb didnt even realize I didn’t type out the 3rd musuem- it’s Hirshhorn Museum. Updated) (Edit 3. Omg. Thank you for the awards. Please don’t spend money. But I do want to tell everyone thank you so much. Your kind words and funny stories? I want you to know that you changed a stranger’s life today) submitted by /u/KaosKittyMaw to r/travel [link] [comments]

I really feel the need to share this with all of you living in Washington DC
I’m an immigrant — I’ve been living in the DMV area for 5 years now, and 3 years specifically in DC. Honestly, adapting wasn’t too hard for me. Coming from South America, from a capital city, and being a professional, my biggest challenge was really just improving my English day by day. Other than that, my life as an immigrant in my beloved DC has been relatively smooth. And the real reason for that has been: the people — yes, the locals of Washington DC. People who truly believe in and respect the foundations of living in this beautiful city, who work to build a stronger community regardless of where you come from, what color your skin is, or who you are. That’s something hard to put into words, but you can feel it just by walking around the city. However, this year, my perception has shifted a lot. My mom came to visit me for a week — she’s been here before, but this time we had more time to explore and for me to show her the magic of Downtown, the museums, the National Mall, the architecture, the history, and even the memories I’ve built here. But being in all these incredible places, while feeling judged — feeling like people were looking at us differently — especially when they were wearing MAGA hats or shirts, made me feel an intense discomfort I’ve never experienced here before. And it goes completely against the spirit I’ve always felt from the DC community. I get it — they were probably tourists from other states, just like my mom was a tourist here. But still, the fact that someone feels so entitled to make another person feel “different,” without even considering the contribution (or simply the existence) of the people living here, is just profoundly sad. It’s definitely not the DC I’ve known and loved all these years. Sorry for the long post — I just really needed to get this off my chest. And thank you to everyone who continues to stand up and fight to make sure this does not become the new normal in our city. Our city. submitted by /u/Yesidc93 to r/washingtondc [link] [comments]

What is your unpopular Washington, DC opinion?
What's your unpopular DC opinion? Saw this in a different city subreddit, and thought we could arrange something similar. What's your most controversial DC take? Mine would probably be that the buses are a lot better than people make them out to be, and that public transportation in general is quite good. Just wish it ran a bit later. Please no mean-spirited dipshittery, we're going for light-hearted arguments about tourist kitsch and your personal crackpot theories for beating traffic, along with bars and restaurants, not anti-immigrant screeds or gripes about your income tax rate or w/e. submitted by /u/CaptainTabor to r/washingtondc [link] [comments]

Feeling trapped in Washington, DC
I've lived in DC for over five years - and have loved it. I think it's the best major city in the US. I moved here when I was 24 from a smaller metro area (I felt like I was 18 all over again when I moved here) and the experiences I have had here really helped me mature and shaped me into who I am today. Ever since I turned 29 this year, I've been pretty depressed here and started to feel "trapped" in the sense that I desperately want to move - almost like the walls are closing in on me. I really can't stand the type-A professional class here and how they live to work and plan every moment of their personal lives around their job. I lost it at a house party this past weekend where all anyone ever talked about was work. The mentality extends across different friend groups (so I know it's just not certain people but rather a trait here) - two weeks ago I asked a friend to dinner either this Saturday or Sunday to catch up and they replied they weren't sure because they needed to destress and plan for the work week ahead. They aren't the only person who has made such comments before to me, and I hear similar complaints from others about the people here. I'm a gay guy and I've become disillusioned with DC's gay scene. I've tried really hard to break into it - but I don't like bars or organized sports or weightlifting and it seems like there isn't anything more to it than that. I have friends in other major cities (NY/LA/SF) who are part of gay book clubs that read polysci books, gay hiking groups, gay WW rafting groups, etc. but I've yet to find that here. Dating has been hard. I haven't gone on a date here in years but have been able to go on dates when traveling to other cities. I'm relatively outdoorsy/crunchy and am big into hiking and I don't feel like there is a scene for that here. Outdoorsy activities in the region typically mean "I like to drink cocktails on a restaurant patio." I've often felt like the nature of the employment sector of DC has essentially prohibited the growth of both a granola/outdoorsy community and an artsy/folk community. Shenandoah is fine but it gets boring after a while and I'd like to be closer to some of the great parks of the West - I've wanted to live on the West Coast or Intermountain West since I can possibly remember. I also can't stand DC's disgustingly humid summers anymore. I'm strange though in that I wish every day was 30 degrees and gray - I thrive in cold, grey weather and can't stand the sun unless I am hiking or doing another outdoor activity. I'd be open to living in LA, SF, Seattle, Portland, or Denver. NYC would be fine too, but I wouldn't get the nature element (although I like the people better). SLC seems cool but the state's politics freak me out. I love being car-free (I hate driving) and haven't owned a car in years, but I recognize I may have to sacrifice that for a bit in order to get what I want. The only issue is that my field (foreign policy/national security) is intrinsically tied to DC. I'm in a position that's 100% remote now but that is rare in my field. I'm looking to leave my position but I recognize the chance of finding another foreign policy position that is also remote is extremely rare. I'm unsure what to do at this point - I feel like I am searching for a unicorn because of how hard it would be to find a position in my field that isn't tied to DC. Any advice/help/reassurance would be great. submitted by /u/walkallover1991 to r/SameGrassButGreener [link] [comments]
