Purchased this Dirty Mountain Dew, got home and noticed something seemed off…. It’s Zero Sugar. Why would I drink Mountain Dew if I didn’t want the full experience! I would just buy Faygo Moon Mist! And this is coming from someone who enjoys Coke Zero. =edit= Thanks for pointing out the black cap and label thing. I didn’t know that was a thing until today. Switching to artificially-sweetened soda is in my mind the most frictionless incremental step somebody can make in improving a piss-poor diet. I've never seen so much cultural awareness (online and offline) around healthy eating, macros, protein intake, and yet apparently full-sugar coke still outsells diet coke and coke zero combined? Are people more hung up about the minute difference in taste or is predominantly lingering confusion/paranoia around whether or not aspartame is carcinogenic? Been seeing a lot of comments from folks saying that zero or low-calorie sodas are detrimental to weight loss, either due to "insulin production stimulation" or because they increase sugar cravings. I understand that artificial sweeteners aren't amazing for you, but most of the data I read points to potential risks with overconsumption. I credit a good portion of the pounds I shed to diet sodas, especially the non-caffeinated ones. Drinking them after meals really helps curb cravings, and having them alongside snacks keeps me satiated. I really have a hard time believing that I would be better off drinking cane sugar sodas. Edit: I am not trying to remove the OG coke (as an example) entirely. Simply shifting the center spotlight from coke to coke zero. If you can't stand the zero sugar products, you can still drink the regular! This is more pointed to the gluttony of my home country (USA, shocker) and the rising weight and obesity crisis. Sugar in sodas is adding significantly to that. Make the sugary sodas not the spotlight, and the next generation will grow up on a soda that isn't just a sugary, calorie dense drink. Instead they get a Sweetened drink that has zero calories. Its not "healthier", but it 100% helps out in weight loss and keeping weight off. Zero sugar sodas should be the normal sodas. The most widely drank and produced, or the "primary" version of sodas should be the Zero sugar variety. The taste is negligible, and if it were the OG, no one would even notice. I understand it is nearly impossible for companies like Coke and Pepsi to make this a thing for existing products, but for all future products just make them all Zero sugar. No one will know. It would simply make everyone's go to beverages significantly less sugardense, reducing calories consumed on average by everyone (who consumes soda), and in general reduce sugar consumption. Sugar on its own is not bad, but I personally have become much healthier after cutting out most sugar (my only sugar is in foods I don't prepare myself and chocolate covered raisins). If the reason you're drinking it is purely because of the taste, fair enough. But zero-sugar is not any better for you than regular soda. It just doesn't have sugar in it. Instead, the sugar is replaced by sweet-tasting chemicals which end up acting the same as sugar does, possibly even worse! So I stopped at Costco here in Texas and they had the zero sugar variety pack (A&W, 7Up and Sunkist) back. I brought it home and opened it and found this. I have just looked at the top row, however there are 4 Kroger seltzer waters, 3 Kirkland signature sparkling waters, all different flavors and all have a Mickey Mouse sticker on them, and also one regular coke can. Coke Zero, Pepsi Zero, Dr. Pepper Zero, and so on. All of these are now available but have a much closer taste to their original sodas than their diet counterparts even though they both use aspartame as sweetener.
