Before the Canggu defenders come for me, hear me out. I built and analysed a database of 52 cities with real numbers on cost, safety, internet, visas, and coworking conditions, some of the information are extracted from reddit discussions as well. Here are some interesting insights: Canggu, Bali: $1,400/mo. 50 Mbps. Safety: 7. Women's safety: 7. Chiang Mai: $900/mo. 100 Mbps. Safety: 8. Women's safety: 9. Tbilisi: $900/mo. 50 Mbps. Safety: 8. Women's safety: 7. Same internet as Tbilisi. WORSE safety than Chiang Mai. 55% more expensive. And it gets worse. Bali isn't LGBTQ-friendly. Indonesia's B211A visa is 60 days extendable. Meanwhile Georgia gives you 365 days visa-free, $0 fee, no income requirement, no tax. I'm not saying Bali sucks, I'm saying the numbers don't justify the price anymore. Yesterday I mentioned a travel planning tool I built in a comment here and didn’t expect much, but it got a lot of positive replies and DMs, so wanted to share it with everyone here. I've been wanting to build a NomadList alternative for a very long time. I travel a lot and spend way too much time planning and I kept running into the same issues: Outdated or limited cost of living data Prices that don’t reflect seasonality Paywalls for basic info Not enough cities, mostly just major hubs So my wife and I built a tool to fix that. It's completely free and transparent in terms of where the data comes from and how it's calculated. With the results of the recent EU elections, I start hearing more and more from my high skilled colleagues and people in general with an immigrant background speaking out about wanting to leave Germany in the next few years. Perhaps as a student this view is a little skewed but people who do consider leaving / have friends who work here and consider leaving - where are you going to move? If Germany becomes even more AfD-friendly, there is literally nowhere in Europe where you can go as a person of color or strong immigrant background and face less criticism than you used to in Germany pre 2024. Is this a joke? I just spent a month there not as a nomad but for other reasons and I literally cannot think of a less hospital 1st world city, let alone specifically for DN. The weather was cold in june. 50s and low 60s F. The people were cold. The food is bland. All coworking spaces are very polished corporate chains. The best places I found to work outside of coworking was the mall and the national library. I still have great respect for warsavians, they took in 1M refugees with open arms. The history of the place cements them as staunch badasses. But there is NO way this city should be in first place. Has nomadlist fallen so far? You can find my original post about retiring and moving to Malaysia here The "Malaysia My Second Home Program" (MM2H) targeting foreign retirees had been suspended since August last year. The Malaysian government has just re-launched the program, but with some very steep requirements: ​ Demonstrable monthly offshore income of $RM40,000 (~US$9,500) vs 25% of that previously. Bank deposit in Malaysia of $RM1 Million (~US$235K) vs 25% of that previously. Must spend at least 90 days a year in Malaysia vs 0 days minimum previously. Malaysia used to be a very desirable FIRE destination because it was inexpensive, safe, English speaking, had good infrastructure and it was relatively easy to get a retirement VISA. That last item is pretty much gone. If you are FIREd and pulling $10K a month, you probably have better options than Malaysia. So tons of digital nomads are referring to Nomadlist for city score. "Bad safety!" "Great Internet!" "A/C situation sucks". Not only are these numbers highly variable within a city that it's meaningless to compare, but it turns out that anyone can enter any random value for any metric. No login required, no CAPTCHA. The city is very safe (none of the ~15 of us had any problems), I haven't heard of racial tolerance being a problem, "Peace" is much better even in Comuna 13, and 9 of the best hospitals in Latin America are located in Medellin. Anyway, let's not get into opinions about a city or another. My point is: how in the world has Nomadlist become a trusted source of DN city ratings, when anyone can enter bogus data via their website?
