RE:What's the name of this furniture concept
Why not just use a freestanding bookcase? Like an IKEA Billy or something. You won’t have access to the bottom shelf, but other than that it should work fine.

Won’t deter a safecracker but useful to hide valuables out of sight. I have inset one into the bottom shelf of a dark wood Ikea Billy bookcase which has a raised base and is completely hidden by a few books Could easily fit into suitable wardrobe base too. May require some simple bracing but a simple DIY project without compromising your floors

We're only a family of 4, but both still in boosters. One of the things I really like is the option to do a Bunnings or IKEA run with all four of us and still be able to fit something long into the car. Dropping the left hand 2nd and 3rd row seats and sitting both kids on the right should let me fit a 190cm Billy bookcase in there. Maybe even a 210cm!

Office/craft room before and after
I moved in a year ago and finally have all the big DIY stuff done in this room. Ikea Billy bookcase built-ins, crown moulding, paint, and wallpaper. Still planning to put up my art/get more art, get outer opaque curtains for the double curtain rod, replace the outlet covers, and replace the lamp. Let me know if you have any ideas for scrap wallpaper. I have so many leftover pieces of various sizes and I want to use them somehow. submitted by /u/PetulantPineapple to r/femalelivingspace [link] [comments]

IKEA furniture is now too expensive for what you get.
We're going shopping to furnish 3 kids' rooms (my nieces and nephew). Everyone said "go to IKEA, they're cheap!" No, they really aren't anymore. I am looking at storage cabinets that cost $299-$799 for laminate or particle board flat pack furniture and up $1000 for a simple wardrobe. I used to love IKEA and admittedly haven't shopped there in a while but their prices are now close to the price of some hardwood already assembled furniture. IKEA used to be the cheaper option (outside of thrifting). They used to make up a lot of first apartment starter packs. They still have some cheap stuff don't get me wrong. Their accessories and home stuff are still well priced and the Billy bookcases still reign supreme but just a bit disappointing to see such high prices overall. Edit: Some people seem really hung up on me saying IKEA is expensive. I will copy another response I made: I said IKEA was getting expensive "for what you get." That is not the same as saying it's expensive overall. I don't shop at Shein but saying the same polyester dress from Shein that used to be $30 and is now being sold for $50 is expensive for what you get is not the same thing as saying a $50 dress is expensive. IKEA can be expensive for what you get while still being a lower price than other stores. Not everything they sell but just in general. The distinction is important. submitted by /u/A_Drop_of_Colour to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

My lil cabin in the Wicklow mountains, Ireland
I hope this post is ok....I shared a picture of my bathroom project, and a few people asked to see more of the cabin. It's completely self designed and built by myself and my dad, everything from the foundations to the roof, plumbing, wiring, windows (handmade by my dad), secret bookcase door leading downstairs to the bedroom (he gave me a look when I broached the idea😂), Two stories at the front, one at the back, because it's built into a hill. Rough around the edges, messy as fuck (paintings and canvases everywhere) and still a work in progress (there's an art/music studio extension on the way) but I love it. My dad and I are best friends and being able to do something like this is a privilege and we enjoyed the fuck out of the whole thing. Lost track of cost, but when I moved in it was around €20k, kitchen, bathroom, couch included....less than 30k altogether. Super cozy in the winter, light and comfy in the summer. Any other questions, ask away. You're all a gorgeous bunch of people 😘 submitted by /u/markmcn87 to r/interiordecorating [link] [comments]

Are the Billy bookcases still sturdy and worth buying?
I'm thinking of buying billy bookcases an but noticed some reviews stating the build quality has declined over the years. Like this part in a review, "In the old Billy, the middle shelf is screwed in between the side panels, and the shelves above and below are held in place with those little pegs. In this new one, nothing is screwed in anymore and all the shelves rest on shelf pins. So my concern is that, just like with cheaper cabinets, the side panels will start to bow and eventually the shelves will fall down. And point two: previously there was a kind of U-shaped bracket included to connect the cabinets together at the top. The holes are still there, but the brackets are no longer included. So I’m concerned about the sturdiness." Do you guys know if this is true and could cause issues? Otherwise i'm thinking of buying bookcases at Jysk and other outlets with sturdier builds. submitted by /u/ThrowawayTheLegend to r/IKEA [link] [comments]

Advice Needed: Built-In BILLY Bookcases
I’ve just built a set of BILLY bookcases and want to make them look built-in, but this is my first IKEA hack so I’d love some guidance. Gaps between units – Better to push them flush together and fill the larger end gaps, or brace between them and cover the smaller joins? What’s best to use for covering gaps neatly? Height extensions – I want to add the BILLY top extensions but, while theres just enough space for them, there’s not enough clearance to lift them on and use the fixings as per the instructions. Any alternative ways to attach them? Backboards – I’ve left them off to paint the units the same colour as the wall. Apart from a small gap at the back of each shelf, any real downsides to skipping them entirely? I’m UK-based, if that's helpful for any tips/suggestions (such as what/where to buy). Thanks in advance for any advice or inspiration! submitted by /u/shit_chat to r/ikeahacks [link] [comments]

Billy Bookcase transformation
Thought I would share my first ever custom Billy bookcase that I built for my living room! Might give people some idea of what is feasible! 3 Billy bookcases (bookcase + extensions) 6 Enkoping doors (white with glass). Lots of work to make unique niches + customize each door with raffia (I broke the tempered glass, and replaced it). Obvisouly not perfect (everything didn’t go according to the original plan…), but good enough for the first try! submitted by /u/enfer06 to r/ikeahacks [link] [comments]

How to secure Billy bookcase when you can’t drill into the wall?
Bought a bunch of Billy bookcases for my home office and surprise, the entire area above the bookcase has LOADS of live wires (also unclear where the water line and gas line run….) so I’m in a bit of a loss of how to secure the thing. Havsta lower cabinets + Billy bookcases finally complete.
Painted with Centurion 400 series 1k satin paint in BM Manor Blue. Trying to match and cope into my crown on the walls was the hardest part of this whole thing. Yes one side is hanging over the entry way by 1.5 inches, going to put French doors there so it won’t matter. My wife wanted the shelves removable so they are on their metal pegs. Sanding, cleaning, priming, and top-coating for 24 shelves was so monotonous plus 12 doors. This was our dining room we never used, we are turning it into my wife’s office. Used cabinet grade plywood on outer sides of bookshelves, used poplar for face frame and edge of each shelf, 3/4 mdf for the countertop and 1/4 mdf for the bookshelf backings (cut to fit and glued to shitty ikea cardboard backing) Things I’d change if I did this again: Used a quartz countertop between the bookshelf and lower cabinet. Never would have installed the ikea backings and just used the 1/4 mdf hardboard. Maybe would have used paint grade maple for all the edging and face frame. Maybe had some maple shaker style doors made for the lower cabinets, ikea pine is so soft it dents easily. Would have just done one side and not both sides of the room. The Billy bookcases are upside down, so I would have never installed the top of the bookshelf so when it’s flipped on top of the cabinet there wouldn’t be a 3/4 lip, just flat on the counter top. It’s not perfect but it looks good from 5 feet lol Learn from my mistakes. submitted by /u/ryan74701 to r/ikeahacks [link] [comments]

I don't understand the hype around BILLY bookcases!
I just don't understand. I work at IKEA, so many of those damn bookcases fly thru the cashlanes. Today we have people buying 8,10, even 20 of them at a time because we got a shipment in. I know y'all are probably reselling them...but WHY? They are so cheap and fall apart. Made of particle board. We see them come in broken all the time at returns and people ALWAYS need the stupid pegs that break. Y'all are way better off getting even a KALLAX unit. They are typically more cost effective. Way more sleek. Even a HEMNES would be much nicer, even tho they are typically pricier. Sorry for venting about something so dumb but I just don't get it!!! Someone enlighten me please!! submitted by /u/malemanipulator4life to r/IKEA [link] [comments]
