The University of Arizona, controversially referred to as a party school was posted on r/sipstea. A sorority released a choreographed recruitment video showing them dancing to country music. Users had strong feelings. Is this a creepy, racist, moral decline of American society? Or are people overreacting? As a European, this stuff just gives me the creeps. Some of us Americans are mortified by the display of weapons-grade ignorance and vacuous stupidity as well. Damn chill dude. It’s literally a video of college girls dancing and having fun. Goodness. People on Reddit probably don’t want to admit that they have more in common with school shooters than they do with women just having fun. It's because they're university age grating in shorts that are cut up right to the hip. It's creepy that young women are doing that for cameras, or feel they have to do that to get ahead in their education. It's also creepy that they're all slim, white, and attractive - does the university kick out teenagers who dare have acne or brown skin? Yeah it’s the intentional homogeneity for me. Women dancing and having fun is great! But this is obviously curated for a super white aesthetic (as I’m sure their membership rolls are as well) and that puts me on alert, looking at something like this as a person of color. I’m all for women having fun- what about women of different sizes, colors, cultures, etc? This is propaganda and it’s got a very specific target, who is very much not me. Dumb take. Go look up sororities like Alpha Kappa Alpha. All black women. These groups choose to self segregate and join people they are more likely to have something in common with. I went to an HBCU, I am familiar with Black Greek organizations. And each of those organizations formed in response to the historical racism and exclusion practiced by white sororities like these. I know historical context doesn’t mean much to ignorant racists, but these are the facts. Of course they were. Nobody denied that. But that doesn't make what I said not true for today If you ignore all context, as racists love to do. You really watched this video and thought “why do people of color still feel like they need their own Greek orgs?” I promise you these ladies aren’t admitting more than 1 or 2 Black girls per year. This is the norm where large sororities are. Texas A&M, UT all had girls who looked like this. Are we complaining about them dancing? Their looks? What is it? This is just the social media age.
