Once you hit 60, getting a photo drivers licence is effectively free. Tell the DVLA you are moving home and the replacement licence is free (otherwise £20 to replace). Then when you get your new licence, send it off again to change the address back! Renewals at 70+ (and every 3 yrs after that) are free. Spotted this getting off the ship in Hilo, Hawaii. As if the shipboard announcements and giant sign weren’t enough, they had to add all these sticky notes emphasizing that yes, you need a photo ID to get back on the ship. ICBC drivers licence renewal requires original physical citizenship certificate
I just went to ICBC today to renew by drivers licence and was turned away because I didn't bring my citizenship certificate. I don't have the original physical copy of my certificate because I only requested the electronic copy. Which is apparently more common nowadays anyway (see https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/proof-citizenship/valid/e-certificate.html) which says "As of January 2023, most people applying for citizenship can now choose to get an e-certificate when applying. Paper certificates are still an option." I called ICBC to tell them I don't have a physical original and just have the electronic copy. They told me I need to apply for the physical original one. A physical certificate is slightly problematic because the processing time is 10 months (see https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/proof-citizenship/about.html). And you can only renew your licence within 6 months of it expiring (mine expires in 3). The ICBC representative told me that I can still apply for a drivers licence without the certificate but I'll only be issued a non-photo licence in the interim until I receive my citizenship certificate and can present that to them instead. It's frustrating because on the ICBC website (see https://icbc.com/driver-licensing/visit-dl-office/Accepted-ID) under section "Foundation documents" it links directly to the government website (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp) which leads to what a valid proof of citizenship is (https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/proof-citizenship/valid.html) and specifically states electronic certificates are valid. I'm hoping I just spoke to a misinformed ICBC representative and that an e-certificate printed out should be sufficient for them. Maybe someone knows more here? Otherwise I imagine more and more people just thinking "sure an electronic citizenship certificate copy should be fine" will run into this same issue as myself. UPDATE 26 March 2026 Good news. I was able to renew my drivers licence (and services card) with a colour printed copy of my electronic citizenship certificate. I guess they just needed a physical piece of evidence to complete the renewal. The person I dealt with didn't even bat an eye at the certificate and didn't question whether it was an original physical copy mailed by the government or a printed copy of the electronic certificate. For what it's worth, I originally went with only my Canadian passport as secondary ID. I assumed the Canadian passport would trump all other requirements, including a citizenship certificate. I had obtained my previous drivers licence either through PR or my previous work permit (I don't recall which). When you go to renew your licence for the first time as a citizen apparently they need to see the certificate that first time, then afterwards it won't be asked for. It's something related to my previous licence being issued on a work permit/PR. I think the person I spoke to on the phone after the first attempt really threw me off and lead to this Reddit post. I imagine if I had just printed the electronic copy to begin with there would have been zero issues. I hope the post serves to help others in the future at least. submitted by /u/benajo to r/Canadiancitizenship [link] [comments]

Had to report my local polling station to Elections Canada
Showed up to vote this morning and ended up in an argument with the poll workers. I am registered to vote, but was running errands and forgot my registration card at home. No problem, I have my drivers license, and I know that's all I need. I even read the big poster on the way in, confirming that is all I need. "Option 1: Show one of these pieces of ID: -your driver's licence -any other card issued by a Canadian government (federal, provincial/territorial or local) with your photo, name and current address" When I presented my ID to the first worker, she insisted that I needed to show something else with my address. I asked if there was something wrong with my license, and she said "no, it's the rules, everyone needs 2 items with their address." She then pointed to the rule quoted above. I pointed out that it says "Show One", and not stating that I have to show multiple. We got into a back and forth where she was insisting I needed to go home and get another identification with my address. She also inserted that something such as a Health Card would not work because both identification needed my address. Eventually she just sent me to talk to another worker because we were getting nowhere. Worker #2 did not speak any English, and I dont speak any French. So I get passed along again. Worker #3 speaks broken English, and she has the list of names for voters. They can't find my name on the list, and she says I need to fill out a form. They bring the form over, but it's in French. I ask for an English version, and they say they only have French, but "don't worry, we'll fill it out for you." After that I was I was able to vote. When I was putting my ballot in the box, I mentioned the confusion with the ID at the front door. She called the supervisor over, and her and the supervisor kept trying to explain to me that "yes, everyone needs a second ID or mail with their address, along with their drivers license." Immediately after leaving, I called and reported the confusion to Elections Canada, concerned that they would be turning away eligible voters. Elections Canada was equally concerned and apologized profusely, promising that someone would.be reaching out to that office immediately. I live in a small community just outside the city, and it feels like the workers here just had no training leading up to today, which is really disappointing. I hope no one else was turned away or felt like they couldn't vote because of the misinformation. Edit: formatting submitted by /u/Caity26 to r/ottawa [link] [comments]

Drivers licence confiscated
I had my licence taken away from me by a bouncer when I was trying to enter a bar on Sat night. He claimed it was a fake licence because “real ones don’t ever peel at the corners”. It was the most minuscule bit of peeling, after 6 years of surviving the abuse of my bags/wallets. The bouncer said I’ll have to bring my passport in to get it back. He then peeled the edge further. So now that it’s noticeably damaged, I’ll almost definitely have to get a new licence anyway. Picking it up tomorrow to see the damage. Has anyone else had this experience? I’d rather not have to pay for a new licence just because some bouncer decided to ruin my one. But if that’s the only option, guess I’ll have to do it. Keen to hear your thoughts. Thanks! Updates (weds morning): - Reported to police - Formal complaints process followed and witnesses contacted (pending submission, will wait until I’ve spoken with bar staff for details on eg the company that does security for them) - spoken to some law colleagues on next steps regarding potential compensation for a replacement licence More background: - bar101 for those who are curious - yes I know, absolute pit, but I had some friends/siblings who needed a sober driver and probably couldn’t find their way back down the stairs lol - I’m a student, I don’t normally make a big deal out of this, but I have a couple weeks of leave before uni starts so I don’t have any problem spending a bit of time sorting this out Thanks again for all the suggestions everyone, you’ve been fantastic!! I’ll keep this post updated Update 2 (weds night, ~10:40pm) - I have my licence back. It is damaged. The bar manager admitted that peeling the licence back is “how we check” the legitimacy of the licence. - With that admission that they indeed were the ones who peeled the licence back, alongside some photos (dated and time stamped ofc, taken in front of the Bar 101 logo outside), I then asked about reimbursement of the licence. - She said she was unsure of the protocols surrounding this. - from here, I recorded some contact details and other admin details - a couple good friends of mine - senior lawyers - said they’d be willing to take the reigns from here now that I’ve done all I reasonable can alone. - They will assisting me in drafting a formal letter requesting reimbursement for the licence - this will be free of charge, but I think them taking some time out of their busy schedules warrants a bottle of wine and a slab will be in order afterwards. That’s $38 better spent than on a new licence anyway. submitted by /u/potent_soil to r/auckland [link] [comments]
