After the Geese Wired piece dropped, we spent the next several months tracking down journalists, military experts, and even a 20-year-old "clipping" agency founder/millionaire, exploring whether the band truly was a "psyop." The results may (or may not) surprise you. To the guy who was too important to wait and ran over the goose crossing Richmond with it's family: I took it to London Animal Care where they humanely euthanized it after you maimed it with your car. You severely broke its leg and it was in pain for the 30 minute drive. Next time, leave an extra 10 seconds so you don't feel the need to hurt another living thing to make it to wherever you were going. They're either an objectively terrible band with tasteless & idiotic fans, or greatest and most important band of the last ten years. It's become so agonising to discuss one of my own current favourite bands right now, why is that? On paper they should be good but they're just really boring, compositionally. There's no violence or contrast in the music. No lived-in worlds. I hate getting targeted advertisements. Especially for music, one of the coolest things you can do is curate your own taste, not let n algo do it for you. when I started getting blasted with hype on every single music forum for the last year for a band that seemed to not exist prior it just felt off. Professionally produced, album covers look expensive in a lame over baked way, I know people in bands and you don’t just blow up like that as a rock band these days. I remarked on this unnerved feeling a couple of times in some music subreddits and got dismissed but lo and behold, rich connected daddy paid for thousands of bots to pretend to like his son’s band all over the internet. How are they not embarrassed? I know we’re past the whole “you can’t be cool if you sell out” phase of pretension but.. Am I the only one who thinks this kind of advertising is so fucking scummy and lame? I wasn’t a fan before but now I’m going to actively avoid them. And before you comment how the goal of the advertising is good and if you found the music that you liked in the end it’s all good, 90% of the discourse around this band has been about their connections and their advertising campaign instead of their music, that’s a bad sign. probably gonna get FLAMED for this, (perhaps rightfully so) and mb I'm being a stick in the mud but I felt a bit let down by the SF show at the Fillmore. thought Racing Mount Pleasant sounded great, their sound felt p dialed to me, then Geese came on and it felt like the bass and kick were eating the mix the whole show. might've just been where I was standing. But also had a strange sensation about the band vibe/how they might be relating to the recent meteoric hype. Geese has been my fav for the past year, and I've watched a good amount of live vids, and usually felt pretty compelled. but the other night I was feeling like they were almost going through the motions in a masturbatory way. and was wondering if everyone gassing them up might be making them feel a little too self-satisfied or something. sorry if this is parasocial or just speculative and dumb. I might be getting old also. I rlly love the last two records/Heavy Metal, but I gotta say I was somehow both underwhelmed and overstimulated by a feeling of lack of dynamics n effort at the show. Not technical effort, but like, letting ur guard down and sharing something. Meeting the audience somewhere instead of just showing off. The palpable Cameron obsession from fans also colors things in a particular way. I guess it's interesting how their (somewhat) avant garde vibe is intersecting w/ mainstream celebrity crush madness. I hope that the latter doesn't dilute their potential too much. I really think they could push themselves to have a better live show. I might be crazy but Long Island City felt particularly like an emperor has no clothes moment to me w/ Cameron on piano. Was honestly most excited just hearing them *groove* on Husbands and Islands of Men. that shit was magical. they really are deep musicians, I think mb just the balls-to-the-wall approach feels fatiguing and lacking direction, not really subversive so much as aimless. Like, the insanity of how they're speeding up and slowing down 2122 is interesting, but it almost feels like it's a reaction to being bored with what they're doing? That being said, I think Cameron is a freakin' production genius--I binged all 15 episodes of them recording Islands of Men with Andrew Schoeps, and clearly Cameron is brilliant, iconoclastic, n has a vision. I guess I wish he'd approach their live show with that same degree of intentionality, mb practice piano a lil bit, think about what they're offering the audience in a more selfless way, and not just coast thru it all. I dunno, I guess they also should get to be kids who are just having fun goin ham. I think I'm feeling like they truly could b a groundbreaking, all-timer band and they are sooo close to that, but that gap and cavalier attitude to what they're cookin with feels frustrating--particularly from Cameron. But you could probly say the same thing about Mozart, lmao. anyway, jeez what a ramble. honestly still had a great time, hope I didn't rain too hard on anyone's parade. just was curious if anyone felt anything similar, as I've seen folks say they didn't understand Geese until they saw them live and I guess I had the opposite experience.
