A humidifier helps alleviate dryness in the air, which can cause dry skin, dry throat, and dry nasal passages. It provides moisture to the environment, making it more comfortable to breathe and reducing irritation.
2
Promotes Better Sleep
Dry air can lead to discomfort during sleep, causing issues like dry throat, congestion, and snoring. By adding moisture to the air, a humidifier can help improve sleep quality and reduce these sleep-related problems.

AIO my girlfriend left me over a cheese wheel [New Update] [Concluded]
This is a repost. The original was posted in /r/AmIOverreacting by user Jems138. I'm not the original poster. There was a previous BORU here. Thanks to u/Similar-Shame7517 for finding this update Status: Concluded Original January 28, 2026 I (27M) and my girlfriend (26F) were saving for a house down payment. I work, and she is unemployed. I have saved 32,000 and she has saved 4,000 so I feel like I bear the brunt of the financial decision making here. I was doing the Oxford county cheese trail, and found a “vault release”. They were selling a 140 pound wheel of 21 year old cheddar. It was aged using a traditional cloth bound method Thats practically extinct here in Canada, and with over 21 years it is extremely concentrated. 21 year old cheddar often sells for 120$ a pound. The farm was selling the entire wheel for 18,500$. If I cut it into 200g wedges and sell it at 60$ each I can make 38,000$. I bought the cheese wheel, and brought it home in my truck. When I rolled it into our apartment at first she was excited, when I started to explain the financials and investment potential she turned sour. She didn’t yell, but expressed she wasn’t happy about how I spent MY share of our house savings. She is now staying with her parents. I think she’s overreacting because she doesn’t understand the Canadian housing market. Our savings is not enough for a down payment without a ridiculous mortgage, and we need to take these opportunities. AIO? Or am I the only one with ambition in our relationship? TLDR; my girlfriend is staying with her parents because I spent my share of our savings on a cheese wheel which can be cut into wedges and sold for a sizeable profit. Thank you. Consensus: OOP is bad at math and a weirdo who needs divine intervention Comments by OOP: I’ve got to figure out how to open the darn thing still I haven’t figured out how to open it yet, it’s covered in thick wax. It looks like a cannon ball. I have tried using a hair dryer and a knife but I can’t get into it. It’s not rind it’s paraffin wax. It’s 21 year aged cheddar so the wax is brittle and hard. The texture is like a cannonball not the shape. This is a 21 year old cheddar. It has a thick black wax and it’s hard with hairline fractures from the cheese expanding and contracting over 21 years. It is a heritage cheese, not some run of the mill Parmesan You are dividing the 140 pounds by 7 ounces but you are forgetting that there are 16 ounces in a pound. So if you divide the 140 by 7, the 7 goes into 14 twice. Also the cheese will not spoil, after 21 years all the moisture has been replaced by calcium lactate crystals. Once the wax seal is broken I will be putting it in my chest freezer You can’t compare this heritage cheese to a grocery store commodity, the scarcity dictates the price. She doesn’t have any overhead because I pay the bills, hence why I feel that It is acceptable for me to make financial decisions like investing in high yield assets like the traditional cloth bound, 21-year aged, Oxford Heritage Cheddar Wheel Update February 3, 2026, 6 days later I have taken some of your feedback into consideration from my last post. For those curious: my girlfriend is no longer in the picture. She cracked due to low risk tolerance, so I’ve decided to go all in on the business. I initially tried to return the wheel to the distributor to recoup some capital, thinking they’d have some pity. They were actually considering it until they came out to look at it in my truck. Apparently, the minor heat damage I caused to the paraffin wax while trying to open last week compromised the wheel which was already non refundable in the first place. Since I’m now stuck with a 140lb, 30,000+ asset, I had to pivot to asset protection and keep what I still have. I went out and bought a True TBB-2-HC 59” solid door back bar cooler, a professional digital temperature humidity controller, an industrial humidifier, a vacuum sealer, and ripening mats. Total cost was about 8.5k after taxes. Expensive, yes, but I wasn't going to let a30,000+$ investment depreciate value. The delivery was difficult. My apartment door is narrow, so I had to take the door entirely off the hinges and shimmy the cooler into the living room. I had maybe a millimeter of clearance between the frame and the unit. I was exhausted and excited so I started researching installation on my phone before putting my front door back on. That’s when my landlord walked in. Apparently he believes my door being off the hinges somehow removes my reasonable right to privacy. We already have a strained relationship because of my own use of the unit. He still holds a grudge because I was doing some light metal fabrication with a CONSUMER plasma cutter in my kitchen a few months ago He saw the cooler, the vacuum sealer, and the wheel of heritage cheese and started crying about commercial operations and fire hazards. I told him very clearly: The cheese is for personal consumption. There is nothing in my lease that limits how much dairy a tenant can own. The next morning, I found an eviction notice in my mailbox. it’s riddled with spelling errors as if written in a haste. I’m already preparing my defense for the Landlord Tenant Board AIO? I’m being evicted over dietary preferences as far as the landlord is concerned and I feel like this is an unlawful action EDIT: added a + to the valuation as it is possible to increase my margins depending on the quantities I sell in. Also please bear in my mind that I have sold ZERO cheese so I feel like this is premature action. Thank you At this point, the moderation of r/AmIOverreacting asked for a picture to prove this is real, to which OOP posted these pictures: Picture of a wheel of cheese and a paper with OOPs username next to it Picture of an eviction note Picture of a recipe for cheese worth of 18,400 CAD NEW Morgan from Two Hot Takes sent OOP a request to buy some cheese, and he responded the following: Unfortunately rhe cheese wheel endeavour has come to an end. Plant ordered off Etsy smells like cigarette smoke really bad, do I give the seller a bad review ?
So I need advice. I ordered an expensive variegated Hoya Compacta on Etsy from a literal 5-star seller. The plant itself is absolutely gorgeous and was packaged pretty well overall, though you could tell they were probably rushing a bit. Some dirt spilled during shipping, but nothing major. The issue is the cigarette smoke smell. At first I thought I was imagining it because when I first opened the box I didn’t notice it right away. Most sellers wrap the top with fiber fill/poly fill and that material was completely soaked in the smell. I rinsed the plant and hoped it was just trapped in the packaging, but it’s obvious now the smell is deep in the soil too. Every time I walk by my plant room it smells like cigarettes because of the humidifier and airflow. 😭 I’m honestly so disappointed because the actual plant is perfect. I collect plants and I’m really sensitive to smells, so now I’m stuck wondering what to do. Has anyone dealt with this before? Can the smell eventually come out on its own? Should I completely repot it immediately and rinse the roots? I’m nervous about stressing out a compacta after shipping because they already seem dramatic enough lol. Also would you mention this to the seller or just leave it alone? I would hate to be the only person leaving a bad review on an otherwise 5-star shop, but at the same time I’d also hate for someone to spend $100+ on a plant and have this happen to them too. The weird thing is the outside of the box itself didn’t smell, which makes me second guess everything. Part of me is wondering if maybe it somehow happened during shipping, like being around a mail carrier smoking or something? I honestly don’t know. And before anyone tells me I shouldn’t order plants off Etsy, every single plant I’ve ordered off Etsy has been INCREDIBLE quality. compared to the greenhouses here in NE Ohio with generalized care. This definitely hasn’t been my normal Etsy plant experience at all. *****UPDATE - a plant shop owner responded telling me that when these plants flower they can smell like cigarettes. After reading the comments they can also smell like cat urine and other stuff when they’re about to flower and only at night. I thought hoyas smelled like chocolate honey I didn’t know they could also smell like an ashtray. I communicated this to the seller and I left 5 stars thank you all for your help submitted by /u/Asleep-Beginning7805 to r/houseplants [link] [comments]

As long as I’m using dehumidifiers/humidifiers to keep the room at 50 percent humidity is there any reason to worry about developing mold? I have about 20 pairs of pnw style boots so a lot of them sit for a while. Boot trees in about half I would say..

AIO my girlfriend left me over a cheese wheel
I am NOT OOP. OOP is u/Jems138 Originally posted to r/AmIOverreacting AIO my girlfriend left me over a cheese wheel ---- Editor’s note: please be aware that OOP is from Canada, so any numbers you see in this post, they are based on Canadian currency Original Post: January 28, 2026 I (27M) and my girlfriend (26F) were saving for a house down payment. I work, and she is unemployed. I have saved 32,000 (editor’s note: about $23,594 USD) and she has saved 4,000 (editor’s note: close to $2,950 USD) so I feel like I bear the brunt of the financial decision making here. I was doing the Oxford county cheese trail, and found a “vault release”. They were selling a 140 pound wheel of 21 year old cheddar. It was aged using a traditional cloth bound method That’s practically extinct here in Canada, and with over 21 years it is extremely concentrated. 21 year old cheddar often sells for 120$ a pound (editor’s note: almost $90 USD). The farm was selling the entire wheel for 18,500$ (editor’s note: $13,640 USD) . If I cut it into 200g wedges and sell it at 60$ each (editor’s note: approximately $45 USD) I can make 38,000$ (editor’s note: about $28,016). Relevant / Top Comments Has OOP been able to slice and taste the cheese yet? OOP: I haven’t figured out how to open it yet, it’s covered in thick wax. It looks like a cannon ball. I have tried using a hair dryer and a knife but I can’t get into it. Commenter 1: Bud. You have no plan. You have no buyers. You are bad at math. You aren’t in the restaurant industry- you’re not connected to unload it while it’s still good. It’s perishable as soon as you break into it. You’ve also said in another comment that you’re trying to melt the wax. Which will absolutely ruin it. You’re fumbling around in the dark. You made a bad call. Like a seriously bad one. OOP: The cheese is no longer perishable. After 21 years all the moisture that would cause it to go bad has been replaced by calcium lactate crystals. Editor's note: the calculations mentioned might or might not be correct. Commenter 2: You say this cheese "often sells for $120 a pound", yet you actually paid $132 a pound for it. In that case it sounds to me like you overpaid and could struggle to turn a profit off it. Next you say: "If I cut it into 200g wedges and sell it at 60$ each I can make 38,000$." 200 grams is 7 ounces. You could get a maximum of 320, 7 ounces slices out of a 140 pound wheel, assuming zero waste. At $60 each that would get you $19,200, not $38,000. Your math is totally off for one thing, and I suspect you're going to struggle to find hundreds of customers willing to pay $60 for 7 ounces of cheese, so most likely you will lose money from this venture. That said, your money is yours to do what you want with, but if you have a partner you are planning a future with it's a bad idea to make big decisions like this without running it by them first. It breeds distrust, resentment, instability, etc. You're supposed to discuss things together and make decisions together. That's how partnerships work. In this case maybe your partner could have checked your math and explained how far off your numbers were and saved you from a costly mistake. YOR OOP: You are dividing the 140 pounds by 7 ounces but you are forgetting that there are 16 ounces in a pound. So if you divide the 140 by 7, the 7 goes into 14 twice. Commenter 3: You spent $18,500 on cheese with no actual plan on how to you’re going to recoup that outside of “Yeah I can totally sell this!!!” 140 pounds equals 63,500 grams. You’re talking about selling 200 gram wedges. That would require you to prepare, package and sell 317 units without any kind of market presence. Incidentally, your math is WAY off. Selling 317 wedges at $60 each comes to $19,050, which nets you a whopping $650 for what will surely be weeks of work on the completely off chance you manage to sell everything. Enjoy being the human equivalent of a Kraft Single. OOP: You are forgetting that there are 16 ounces in a pound so if you divide the 140 by the 7 ounce wedge , the 7 goes into 14 twice Commenter 4: You are insane if you think anyone is paying over a hundred bucks for a pound of freaking cheese. OOP: You can’t compare this heritage cheese to a grocery store commodity, the scarcity dictates the price. Commenter 5: Who is going to pay $120/lb for cheese that some random person is selling out of their apartment? If I was going to spend that much I'd want to know that it was stored and handed properly. And actually do you need a food safety license to do this kind of thing? OOP: 1) It’s not a commodity, it’s a heritage cheese and the value is determined by the scarcity. You can’t get this cheese from a regular retailer. 2) I have my Ontario food handlers certificate. Commenter 6: How in the hell are you going to find enough buyers for this niche cheese? Don't you need a license to sell food? What regulations do you have to follow? After you cut the cheese, how long will the wheel stay fresh? Can you store it appropriately to preserve it for that length of time? Even a supermarket would have a hard time going through an entire wheel of niche super expensive cheese. I don't think you thought this through enough for it to be a good idea. You would probably be lucky to recover the amount you paid to begin with, and are probably going to be skirting the law to sell it unless you are already licensed to do so Your girlfriend essentially moving out because of this seems extreme, but to be fair this seems like you really didn't think things through. OOP: Also the cheese will not spoil, after 21 years all the moisture has been replaced by calcium lactate crystals. Once the wax seal is broken I will be putting it in my chest freezer Commenter 7: How did she "save" $4,000 being unemployed? Unless it was from her unemployment payments, but he never mentioned she was getting paid unemployment. How much does unemployment even payout, total, anyways? Maybe it was Birthday/Christmas money from relatives. If you were to look at it as percentage saved to money "available" or in his case "earned" she saved way more than he did! Why was not contributing his fair share? OOP: She doesn’t have any overhead because I pay the bills, hence why I feel that It is acceptable for me to make financial decisions like investing in high yield assets like the traditional cloth bound, 21-year aged, Oxford Heritage Cheddar Wheel   Update: February 3, 2026 (six days later) Photos in comments as I can’t add to the post I have taken some of your feedback into consideration from my last post. Thank you Pictures of the cheese wheel and eviction form Image #1: the cheese wheel being covered with a squat, black, puck-shaped paraffin wax. On the top is marked with the handwritten date “2005-02-04”, and the whole thing is tightly wrapped with silver duct tape in a cross pattern, as if it was to be sealed or reinforcing it. Image #2: A printed retail receipt of the cheese wheel purchase from Oxford County, Ontario, Canada dated Jan 28, 2026, showing one 140-lb, 21-year aged heritage cheddar wheel for 18,400 CAD. (editor's note: close to $13,470 USD) Image #3: OOP explains this picture of a bevelling machine for a torch made out of scrap. It goes around round objects with a torch and cuts a bevel onto the edge. It’s made using a hand drill motor, dials from a broken welder, and gears from hand grinders. Image #4: Three paragraphs explains the measures of the cheese wheel. A 140-lb, 21-year-old cheddar wheel would be very large, dense, and compact, about 27 cm tall and 54 cm wide, often compared to a “cannonball” in solidity. It notes that it is much bigger and thicker than a typical Parmesan wheel, and that cheese of this age and weight is extremely rare due to long-term aging and dehydration. Image #5: A formal notice to end a tenancy from OOP's landlord. The visible text indicates reasons such as interfering with others, damage, or overcrowding, and notes that it is a notice that could lead to eviction. Much of the personal or specific information is redacted, but the document is clearly an official warning related to housing and possible eviction. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: I hope girlfriend got her $4k back. OOP (downvoted): Integrity is an asset that does not depreciate, unlike her savings which will be eaten by inflation. Commenter 2: Tell us more about this plasma cutter OOP: It plugs into a 120 volt wall socket and I can cut 3/8” thick steel extremely cleanly. OOP explains more about the cheese wheel and how it is being covered with OOP: It has a thick black paraffin wax covering it, underneath that is cheesecloth, and underneath the cheesecloth is the 21-year aged heritage cheddar Why is there duct tape on the cheese wheel? OOP: I damaged the paraffin wax trying to open it, so I put tape over it to keep it sealed Commenter 3: I can't find a cheese shop in Oxford County, ON that ends in the name "Fine Cheese." There's only a few cheese shops and it doesn't seem to be a large county. OOP: directly from the farm not a store front. I would not buy from a middle man Why isn't there the tax on the cheese wheel in Canada? OOP No HST on dairy (editor's note: harmonized sales tax which is the consumption tax paid by local consumers and businesses)   DO NOT COMMENT IN LINKED POSTS OR MESSAGE OOPs – BoRU Rule #7 THIS IS A REPOST SUB - I AM NOT OOP submitted by /u/Choice_Evidence1983 to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

RC Raiders Expedition Project: How to Reach 5 Million Stash Value Before Reset
Hey Raiders! I’ve seen the stress around hitting 5,000,000 stash value for the Expedition Project. So, it spent some time looking into how much time it actually takes. Good news! It's actually not as bad as it seams. With a bit of prep and a clean plan, you can get there in about 9–13 hours of actual play. And It doesn't have to be completely no-life grind. Download the PDF What’s inside: Mixed strategy (recommended): Run Lush Bloom basket routes when events are live, switch to Stella Montis. Rotate to keep coins/hour high and burnout low. Realistic pacing: Lush Bloom only: ~500–600k/hr · Stella Montis only: ~300–450k/hr · Mixed: ~400–550k/hr → ~9–13 hrs from 0 to 5M Run notes: bad spawns 20–25k, solid 30–35k, clean Stella Montis runs 58–84k. Extract on time. Being greedy kills your run. Lush Bloom Events (how to): Baskets ≈ 10k each. Chain 7–15 per run using the marked map; look near corrugated sheet-metal areas. Loot & leave. Bonus detours through Raider Camps if they’re on the way. Stella Montis (how to): 5–7 min Assembly loop: cabinets → engine breaches → 4 breach rooms → hatch/extract. What to bring (low investment): Looting Mk.2, Stitcher, Raider Hatch Key (craft), bandages, shield recharge. Save Sensors & Magnets for backpacks (buy from Celeste if needed). Scrappy covers basics. Rules of thumb: Stack same items first, only recycle if you need mats now, keep only Quest / Workshop / Expedition essentials. Solo has the best value/hr; squads only pay if you consistently win. Late-spawn rule: ≤5m run full route · 5–10m hit primaries then leave. >10m go straight to extract and loot on the way. ATTENTION RAIDERS! To the Players Looking for Rusted Gears, Humidifiers, Laboratory Reagents, Motors, Rusted Shut Medical Kits, Industrial Batteries, Fried Motherboards, Surveyor Vaults, and Sentinel Firing Cores. READ THIS!
***EDIT*** 11/11/2025 @ 11:00 AM) NEW POST WITH SEPARATE GUIDES AND MORE LOCATIONS: https://www.reddit.com/r/ArcRaiders/comments/1ouezn1/attention_raiders_part_2_master_guide_cheat_sheet/ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ***EDIT*** 11/11/2025 @ 8:15 AM CST) First off, I want to thank all of you for the kind words and the tips that you added to the comments. I just updated this post with some more places that people added in the comments! Hope this helps! Also, I apologize but I can't put any more images in it maxes at 20. If you want me to post more guides let me know I run r/ArcRaidersGuides. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hello Raiders! For context, I have about 100 hours in Arc Raiders at this point and have maxed all benches, maxed Scrappy, finished my expedition project, and finished all quests. Here are some tips on finding some of these items that most of you are most likely having a hard time finding. Be sure to pay close attention to the directions I'm giving you guys some of these are harder to find than others! :) __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rusted Gears: I personally had the most success finding these in the underground section of the Primary Facility which can be entered through loading dock or through the catwalks in the Floodgates. Essentially this area is still considered the loading dock. In this underground area there's loot boxes that are shaped like cubes that you can breach that I have gotten rusted gears from. The most common area I've gotten these is in the same area. In this area there will be storage containers that have the side of them opened up. There will be drawer-like containers that you can loot on the LONG SIDE of the storage containers. There are 3 containers in this area with 0-2 drawers each. These storage containers can drop RUSTED GEARS, INDUSTRIAL BATTERIES, MOTORS, AND A FEW OTHER MORE RARE RECYCLABLES. Below is a screenshot of where I'm referring to. The red dot is where to enter. ***EDIT:*** Another area to get these is at the buses in the top of the Dam Battlegrounds map next to the North Complex Elevator extraction point. They will be in the side of the buses. ***EDIT:*** Here is another guide for rusted gears that claimed 100% drop rate but I haven't tried it so feel free to check it out! https://www.reddit.com/r/ArcRaiders/comments/1othrof/i_think_i_found_a_static_rusted_gear_spawn_looted/ RUSTED GEARS, MOTORS, INDUSTRIAL BATTERIES LOCATION __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Humidifiers: I found an area that drops humidifiers 100% of the time. On Buried City at the Red Tower, there is an enterable home to get up to the top of the red tower. When exiting the home there is a broken wall to the outside to get up to the top of the Red Tower. This is also where one of the quests is. Before exiting the home through the broken wall there are 1-2 orange lockers in the home. One of them spawns a humidifier 100% of the time. Below is a screenshot of where to enter from the ground floor to get up to the second floor where the lockers are. HUMIDIFIERS LOCATION __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Laboratory Reagents: I found an area that also drops laboratory reagents 100% of the time. On Buried City there are 2 pharmacies. In front of the pharmacy there is a door to breach to get in and on the first floor are shelves that have Laboratory Reagents sitting on them. Below are screenshots of where the pharmacies are located with a red dot on where to enter them from. LABORATORY REAGENTS LOCATION 1 LABORATORY REAGENTS LOCATION 2 __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Motors: I have had the most success getting motors near the North Complex Elevator extraction point. Near the extraction there are 3 buses that have a loot box in the back of them you can breach but where I've gotten the most motors is from the SIDE of the buses in the searchable containers. Another place to get motors is the same location you can get the rusted gears from at the loading dock mentioned above. Below is a screenshot of the 3 buses with red dots on them and the loading dock again with the entrance also marked by a red dot. MOTORS LOCATION __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rusted Shut Medical Kits: Honestly I still have yet to find a place that drops these 100% of the time. I've gotten these in pretty much any medical area. Here's been my most successful places to find them. Pharmacies on Buried City. Town Hall Key Room on Buried City on the 2nd floor with all the desks with drawers you can search (I've gotten 2 here in one run). NEED A "BURIED CITY TOWN HALL KEY" TO ACCESS THIS ONE. Hospital on Buried City (I hate this one it's always packed). Testing Annex on Dam Battlegrounds. Medical Room in the Research and Administration Building on Dam Battlegrounds. Top floor where red dot is in the screenshot. Medical Room in the Departure Building on Spaceport. Top floor where red dot is in the screenshot. My most successful farm runs for these where when I ran Testing Annex on Dam Battlegrounds. Below are screenshots of all the places mentioned above. RUSTED SHUT MEDICAL KIT LOCATION 1 RUSTED SHUT MEDICAL KIT LOCATION 2 RUSTED SHUT MEDICAL KIT LOCATION 3 RUSTED SHUT MEDICAL KIT LOCATION 4 RUSTED SHUT MEDICAL KIT LOCATIONS 5 AND 6 RUSTED SHUT MEDICAL KIT LOCATION 7 __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Industrial Battery: I also haven't found a 100% spawn location for Industrial batteries but they can also be found in multiple locations that I've found. Many that I have found were in the loading bay by the primary facility but below are some more locations I've seen them before. Side of the storage containers as mentioned previously in Loading Bay near the Primary Facility on Dam Battlegrounds. This is also where you COULD find rusted gears and motors. Humidifier for room that actually works
Our air feels even dryer here than normal (I'm on my fifth year here.) i keep waking up with an extremely throat and eyes. I bought a cheap humidifier on Amazon and i feel it did nothing. Does anyone here have a humidifier they'd recommend? submitted by /u/Nervous-One-2305 to r/Denver [link] [comments]

TNR but cat refuses to “R”- advice? Experiences?
I can’t keep this guy; I have six indoor cats and 2 dogs who don’t like him, and I’m caring for 3 other feral cats. I trapped and took a feral turned stray cat for neuter and shots a little over a week ago. It was like fighting a bear to trap him, and he spat and swiped at me through the cage while I was carrying him… but this guy has turned into the sweetest dude who just refuses to leave my house now. I fed him for 9 months outside prior to finally being able to trap him, only being allowed to touch him the past two months, after months of slowly introducing the concept that people aren’t all bad and he could trust me. Even then, I could barely grab him for neutering, and he was still biting/smacking me regularly. He never acted like he liked me (understood) and mostly glared at me or howled commands. Cut to last Monday; I picked him up from the clinic after his neuter, and they said he had been quiet all day…until he heard my voice and started meowing and purring, standing up in his cage and trying to get to me 😭 I’ve never heard him purr, never had any indication he liked me until I arrived to take him home lol. He immediately started rubbing on my hand through the cage and then wanted me to pet him all night long at home. I was prepared to release him after 24 hours, but he wouldn’t leave the kennel I’ve got him in. I also paid for him to get an antibiotic and steroid shot to treat his URI that I suspected he had, so I thought “well maybe he just wants a quiet place to rest/recover” and let him stay. I have a little humidifier set up outside the dog kennel I have him in, and I visit him often for food, cleaning his litter, and cuddles. He’s at day 9 inside my house now; I thought it would be hard to get him to stay for 2 days lol! I keep him separated from everyone (and wash my hands) to prevent spreading his illness or anything else he may have, and to prevent my animals from attacking him. He sleeps so hard- like he’s never really slept in his life before, and is obsessed with the self heating bed I got him. It breaks my heart but I have 6 cats of my own and 2 dogs… and they don’t like him. I got him all his shots, neutered, and parasite treatments. I planned to release him back into the neighborhood but built him platforms on my deck and he has an outside cat shelter. I’ll let him keep the bed I have in the kennel for him too. I open his cage and he will get out, only to find me for more pets- yesterday he was glued to me while I was doing chores in that part of the house. He lets and loves me touching him everywhere now, even his belly, and lets me pick him up and hold him. He’s like a completely different cat! I tried to coax him outside but he will stick his head out, meow, and run back into his little kennel in my dining room. He uses the litter box in there and eats constantly. All he wants to do is eat, poop, sleep, and get loved on. He doesn’t cry or try to escape, he’s not running around in there, or any sign he isn’t happy. In fact, he’s the happiest I’ve ever seen him, even allowing my daughter to pet him and for us to clean his wounds and fur. I’ve posted him on several local social media sites in hopes of finding him a forever home bc he’s apparently not feral after all, but no interests. He’s only about 1.5- he was a kitten I fed last year who disappeared before I could neuter and rehome. All our shelters and rescues are well beyond full; that’s why I have been caring for him myself for so long, and why I’ve personally trapped, desexed, and rehomed 15 other cats over 5 years. Idk what to do with him, honestly. I still have 3 feral cats I’m taking care of and trying to gain trust so I can TNR them, plus the aforementioned 8 pets (all foster/rescue fails from my dozens over the years) but this dude has apparently imprinted to me. :/ I also feel badly because last year, when he was a kitten, was the best time to place him and I failed him. He just disappeared a few days before his scheduled neuter and I didn’t see him for months. I had assumed he had been taken in by a neighbor or something else happened … until one day a scraggly cat showed up on my back deck with a huge abscess and severely underweight. He let me treat his abscess with minimal attacking me, and I used a water gun over the next week to squirt antiseptic in the wound from a distance because once I treated the initial wound and he felt better, he was back to hating people and attacking. During this time I discovered the unique marking he had as a kitten and realized he was my lost boy, and tried talking to him so he would remember me. I’d like to think he came to my door when he was sick bc he remembered, but maybe he just followed the food like all the other neighborhood strays. 🤣 Anyway, since that day he’s visited nearly daily for food and water and our relationship has grown, but I still have so much guilt over failing him and now I have guilt over putting him back outside eventually. Have any of you had a situation where the TNR cat decides they want to live with you? This is my first time in nearly 20 years of rescue that I’ve had one refuse to leave, and also the first time I have no real adoption options. I’m hoping that once he fully recovers he will want to leave and make it easier on both of us to send him back to his colony, but idk what to do if that doesn’t happen. submitted by /u/jinxlover13 to r/Feral_Cats [link] [comments]

OOP finds and rescues an injured crow
I am NOT the Original Poster. That is idontsellseashells. They posted in r/crows Thanks to u/enbycats for the rec. NEW UPDATE AS OF TODAY added at the bottom. Do NOT comment on Original Posts. Latest update is 7 days old. This is a long post Mood Spoiler: tragic as of the newest update posted today, August 12 2025 Original Post: July 21, 2025 Title: Injured crow. Struggling to find a rehabber. I came across this adult crow yesterday around noon. I am familiar with him, he's lived in my neighborhood with his family for a few years. I wasn't sure at first if he was sick or injured. He is alert, he was able to grip my finger with his feet, but cannot seem to move his torso area. He spent the rest of Sunday resting in a safe, quiet, dark area in my home. Today, he is still alert. I offered him kitten kibble soaked in water, which he ate immediately, he was hungry! I'm believing that he's likely injured versus sick. I've called and messaged a few different numbers in my town with no luck. Image: The crow OOP adds in a comment: I am located in North Dakota! and Thanks. I've reached out to Facebook groups here in ND as well. Hopefully, I'll get a reply from someone! As for now, he's relaxing and in good spirits. I check on him every once in awhile, other than that, I figured it best to leave him alone. I'm just worried he'll start getting bored or lonely...but I guess that's the human in me 😏 Update Post 1: July 22, 2025 (Next Day) Title: Update on Mr. Crow This brave little guy fought through another day. He was supposed to go to a rehabber today, but she never reached back out to me after I messaged her this morning AND afternoon. I learned that North Dakota does not give out licenses to individuals for wild animal rehabilitation, so it hasn't been easy to find anything. I reached out to a wildlife rescue center in Minnesota who were willing to take him. They were not too optimistic about his survival chances based on his symptoms. On to Mr. Crow.... he's not gained back any use of his legs or torso, though his head moves around to look at what I'm doing. His eyes are always following my movements. Yesterday, he had some mild labored breathing and what sounded like wheezing, so he spent the night with a warm humidifier and today he's breathing normally again. He's not been drinking much, but will eat kibble and eggs that I've soaked in diluted plain pedialyte. He really enjoys eating, he even had the motivation to crack open a shelled peanut! His poops are regular and look normal. I interact/handle him as little as possible. I only clean his soiled bedding, feed him and clean his bottom area of poop when he needs it. It's hard to fight my urge to hang out with him and keep him company. I'm a little torn on what to do. I have the time and finances to drive him to the rescue center, but, if they're likely going to end up euthanizing him, I can probably just take him to a local vet and save him the stress of travel, loading and unloading etc. His poor little soul 😭 Image: Crow facing the camera Some of OOP's Comments: Commenter: if you're worried about potentially putting him down, i think it would be an okay idea to keep him company. **if** he seems to like your presence. crows are social and i don't think they want to spend their last moments lonely OOP: You're so right. I will definitely increase my presence a bit. Commenter: Maybe his back is sprained or something and he needs rest. I don’t know. I’m glad he has you. I wonder too if he can be propped up somehow with a towel or something to help his breathing and they’re not used to laying flat like that. OOP: Good point. I am going to re-situate him right now. To another comment: I have been handling him as little as possible. I keep a towel underneath him as a sort of 'sheet' to slide him around/lift him up versus grabbing him outright. I am going to contact my local vets tomorrow and see what they recommend or perhaps get some leads for rehabbers. Update Post 2: July 23, 2025 (Next Day, 2 days from OG post) Editor's note: See linked post for video Hi all! Mr. Crow is still with us and had a good day today. You guys were so right about spending time with him. He spent the day upstairs with me and he was so alert! He looks at everything, cocks his little head from side to side when he's curious. He seems much less afraid today. I contacted every vet in town, none of them will see a wild bird, not even for euthanasia (if needed). So, I contacted the rescue center in Minnesota, again, they weren't optimistic about recovery since he still hasn't made any improvement in that department even with rest. However, they can provide humane euthanasia. I guess my concern is that his case will be too much effort for such a marginal chance at full recovery and they'll put him down before really giving him a chance. Which, I understand. They have a full plate and limited staff/resources to pour so much into every single animal that they take in. I am currently a stay at home mom for the summer, so I have the time to care for him, but that's all I have. I don't have equipment, meds or a fraction of the knowledge...though, chatgpt has been a godsend! I shouldn't keep him and attempt to rehab him myself....right? He doesn't seem to be in pain. He doesn't seem like he's ready to give up. I guess I'll see how tomorrow goes. Anyway, he had a lovely day. He sat near the back patio door this morning and listened to his family's typical chatter (I'm about 90% sure he's part of the family of 4 that live in my neighborhood. I've been feeding Mr. Crow and his family for just about a year now. They (his parents) had a nest a few houses down, though I haven't seen any babies this year. By some miracle, they must not have seen me grab him the other day, because they still greet me and ask for treats when I'm outside. Hearing his family perked him up tremendously, though he never did call out to them. I hope he can fly back to them one day. Anyway, I don't mean to ramble on. Thank you to all of you who gave advice, prayers and kind words. I'll keep updating. More tips and advice is always greatly appreciated. OOP adds photos: Mr. Crow OOP also adds: He also started preening himself today, something he hadn't done yet. I read that can be a good sign of comfort/relaxing. And Today he will start some gentle physical therapy and range of motion along with hydrotherapy (for his legs only). Commenter: Morality and politics of AI aside, please be careful trusting chatgpt for sensitive situations like this as its info is not always trustworthy, and there’s a chance it might give you false information if it thinks that’s what you want to hear. Cross reference if you can!! OOP: I fully agree with you. Chat gpt has been useful in this whole journey, but I can definitely recognize some of the bogus advice. At any rate, I do check multiple sources before doing any treatments, no matter how simple they are, as well as foods. I TRIPLE check before I do anything, which gets to be a lot of work due to all of the conflicting info out there. A small misstep can be deadly, and I'm feeling the pressure 😅 To some longer comments with specific advice: OOP: Thank you! You just may be hearing from me. Keeping his vent clean has been a challenge. I've hopefully rigged something to keep his bottom area from sitting in his stools. He has gained some slight use of his legs, which is another improvement. Thanks for the advice :) And Thank you for this advice on washing. I've been meticulously washing my hands. They will be raw before long....I've been washing his bedding separately using extra rinse/soak cycles, hot water (our water gets dangerously hot) and laundry sanitizer. Perhaps dipping it into boiling water first would be a good idea as well. It's crazy just how much poop there is with bird care. Update Post 3: July 24, 2025 (Next day, 3 days from OG post) Title: Lots of progress! [Editor's note: Again, see linked post for video] This guy has had a big day! He completed 2 rounds of gentle physical therapy. We started with a full foot and leg massage. Next, we did toe extensions and then moved onto leg extensions, and finally bicycle exercises. After that, we did 'winger-sizes' a term I got from watching Big Bear's Jackie and Shadow's nest cam 😆. Other than lightly retracting his legs (a huge step) he wasn't too responsive. We then finished with a relaxing warm water leg soak. His second round of therapy had him noticeably reacting. He had stronger leg pulls, toe twitching and he even threatened to nip me! Which must mean he's feeling what I'm doing...and he ain't for it 😂. I am being very gentle though, I promise. His other achievements were: tail twitching, lifting his bottom up to poop away from himself, a small but evident body shake (like they do after preening). His head has been turning at wider degrees and he's reaching down to grab food that he's dropped. These are all things I hadn't seen him do before. I'm beaming. One thing I noticed and you can probably see it in this video if you zoom in, his backside 'vent' area is pulsating? I read somewhere that it might be a good thing as his nerves are regaining functional? I also saw that this is something female's do? Could Mr. Crow be a Mrs? I hope it's nothing to be concerned about. He/she has comes so far. Also, sorry if my formatting is all wrong in my posts. I don't entirely know what that means but I frequently see people with long posts on here apologizing for it. Update Post 4: July 25, 2025 (Next Day, 4 days from OG post) Title: Growing stronger ever day 🖤 [Editor's note: Another video available at the link] I thought I'd share another quick video update on our crow pal's progress. You'll see he can get quite feisty and perhaps restless at times. He is now doing some bigger full body shudders and a nicely controlled poop shot. Until yesterday, he only leaked poop, which made for messy and stressful bottom rinses. Also, he's wanting to clean his beak after eating, but I'm not sure just what I can put in his little box that will work? I did replace the glass water bowl so he doesn't hurt his beak. Again, thank you all for listening and rooting for our friend. Maybe we should also give him/her a proper name? I wish I knew the gender! Some of OOP's Comments: Commenter: What about a dog treat toy where he has to work for the treat? OOP: Great idea! I love reddit. Commenter: They like to wipe their beaks off on the edge of something hard and unmoving. A heavy food dish might work. Watch your own crows to see how they do it. OOP: I've definitely seen it in my crows, I guess I've seen them wipe on whatever is closest to them. Just gotta figure out how to secure something within his reach. I imagine he'll be ready for a new enclosure situation once he becomes more mobile. To a longer comment: Thank you for this insight. With how far he's been able to come on his own, I am beginning to rethink taking him to the rescue in Minnesota. They may have a more hopeful outlook at this point. He's getting stronger and gaining weight everyday. I will plan on calling them tomorrow and see what their assessment is on taking him in. At this stage, he definitely needs veterinary level physical therapy and treatment plan. Update Post 5: July 27, 2025 (2 days later, 6 from OG post) Title: Phoenix [Editor's note: Another video at the post link!] Little update and video on our sweet little Phoenix (thank you all for the name suggestions! Phoenix was just so fitting!) He's doing well still. Showing more attitude than ever. As you can see, he's throwing a tantrum over finding apples pieces in his bowl instead of his favorite beef bits or live mealworms. He's starting to show preference in his foods and as you've all probably seen in your own crow buddies, once they taste something they love, they stick their beaks up at anything else. We are working on more fruits and veggies, but he does get bird vitamins sprinkled over his beef bits. He has been interested in some toys that I made. He tends to get feisty at night and really toss them around. You can also see in the last clip, he is starting to try reposition himself a bit. This is definitely a great thing, but also causes him to get into a position that allows for poop build up, which means bottom bathing, and he doesn't like that at all. His bottom has some hard bits of poo built up (his cloaca is clear) just the feathers around it are dirty. I know it must be tender and I am as gentle as I can be. Finding a comfortable position that allows his bottom to be cleared for pooping AND allow his feet to not be squished in awkward positions AND have his breast bone supported without too much pressure has been one of the biggest challenges. He gets lots of repositioning throughout the day to prevent any bed sores. I did find him a nice 2" thick furry pad that should prevent any sores, but he wants to pluck out the faux fur which im afraid won't be good if he ends up ingesting any. So maybe a sheepskin pad? Anyway, he knows just when the little bathing bucket comes out and he even has started little grunts of protest over it. Anyway, now that he's been with me for a week while showning lots of improvements and cleary has the will to live, perhaps I can reach out to the rehabber in Minnesota and explain his improvements. He would absolutely benefit from skilled treatment plans, equipment and probably the social aspect of being near other birds. I know once I surrender him, I won't have anymore say in anything (rightly so). Would they allow me to pick him up and release him into his home territory if he makes the full recovery? I'll have to prepare some questions for them. I've also seen some advice on here about taking him to an avian vet, but will they scold me for keeping him this long and not release him back to me since I am not a licensed rehabilitator (again, rightly so 😒). Thanks again for all the support. I've told nobody else about him because they would think me crazy. So I appreciate being able to share his care with so many crow lovers. 🥰 Two of OOP's Comments: Commenter: TIL Phoenix is a “he”. Thank you for respecting his crownouns. OOP: 🤣 He may very well be a SHE. I've started recording his weight a few days ago, and he's definitely on the smaller side (330 grams) but gaining weight every day. He is thin, I can feel his chest bone easily. I think a lot of that may be loss of muscle mass too. Commenter: I can't imagine it getting much better care at a rehab tbh. If you didn't say so I would think you're a pro already Long live Phoenix OOP: Yeah, I guess I just don't know. I do know that I have mad respect for those guys. This has been a huge challenge in so many ways. And this is just ONE animal. They have dozens. I can definitely understand why they would make the decision to euthanize an animal that comes in as sickly as him. How would we dedicate all this effort towards several very ill animals? Plus, the staffing, funding, etc. I know they have to put their efforts towards the animals that are more likely to pull through. Even wild birds will push the weaker baby out of the nest 😞. Mini Update in Comments: July 29, 2025 (2 days later, 8 from OG post) I called the place that I was in touch with last week, and I left a message. I also sent a long email with my little script. Hopefully, they will call me back tomorrow. Also, I'm fairly confident that he is a she. Her belly feathers got wet while she was soaking her bottom end in some warm water, and I found what looks to be a brood patch. Also, she's been playing with some toy foam balls (about the size of quail eggs), and her behavior with them looked very similar to trying to roll them underneath her. I didn't about it until I saw her patch. I wonder if she has some babies out there. Probably fledged babies this late in the season, hopefully. Oh, and she is officially trying to lift herself up, mostly with her beak but also her legs. I'll share a video tomorrow 😊 Update Post 6: July 29, 2025 (Same day as mini update) Title: Phoenix rising [video available at link again] Hello from Phoenix! She is doing well! I have some fun updates for you all. I am quite certain that Phoenix is indeed a female. Yesterday I bathed her bottom in some warm and her belly feathers got wet, revealing an obvious brood patch (a bald spot on the belly for incubating eggs). There was also some odd behavior while she was playing some little foam nerf balls, she kept trying to roll them under her chin and doing some shifting of her body. I thought she was trying to use them to rest her head on, but now I think she may have been trying to roll them underneath her? I can only guess of course. Perhaps she has babies somewhere out there? Likely fledglings at this point in the season. Hopefully dad is teaching them well. Also, if you watch the video frame by frame, you'll see her positioning herself using her chest, tail, wings and LEGS! She had only been using her beak and chest to pull herself up or back, but now she's using most of her body and using it coordination. Most of these boosts happen before bedtime, for whatever reason. Yesterday, I did fashion a sling for her to lay in while dangling her feet over the floor. She shows no interest in bearing weight or showing me any of her improvements unfortunately. She basically just goes limp (kinda like when you put a sweater on a cat?) But, after setting her back into her little nest bowl, she perks back up to eat, play and preen. I suppose she is still unsure of me and my intentions. She also vocalizes quite loudly, mainly when she doesn't want to be handled, in which case I back off completely and leave the room. But that doesn't happen too often, luckily. I am glad she is showing me some personality and letting me know when she needs space. I uploaded a link with a couple of pics. She watched a documentary on crows. She showed some interest here and there, but then I wondered if sitting so close to a big screen with giant birds looming over her was a good idea, and I turned it off. I guess I'll go out and buy some more toys for enrichment. 😊 https://photos.app.goo.gl/2QjV11aPuaTyspsh6 One of OOP's Comments: Commenter: Falling is the first step to flying OOP: I agree. Which is why I also reached back out to the rescue in Minnesota. They work with many different bird species and they even consult with a crow expert. If she can get to the point where she is standing, using her wings, and really attempting to get around, her safest option is probably be to spend time with them in a safe environment where she has room to fly and areas to perch. I sent a long email yesterday evening with clips of her movements and updates on her progress. I also asked if she would be released back to her home territory, either by me or them. I hope to hear back from them today. Update Post 7: July 31, 2025 (2 days later, 10 from OG post) Title: Last day with Phoenix [Editor's note- see video at link] Hi all! Phoenix is still with us and doing well. She's getting stronger every day. Over the last 2 evenings, she has shown that she can move herself around to get into a preferred position. She has more strength in her legs which you can see in the video. She still doesn't have much functioning in her feet, but that will hopefully come in time. She does show some slight gripping when we do perching exercises. I didn't get the full thing on video, but she started out facing the camera and then turns herself all the way around before passing out hard from the effort. I spoke with a rescue facility in Minnesota yesterday. They seemed optimistic about her recovery so far. She will receive a full examination that will look for lingering illness or injuries and then create a care plan based on what she needs. They also refer more difficult cases to neighboring rescue centers that are better equippe. They also work with a veterinary college in the Cities, so I do believe she will be given a fair chance. They agreed to give me updates on her recovery. She checks in tomorrow morning at 8. I am going to miss her dearly. Also, I can't express enough thanks to you all! The well wishes, kind words and advice were HUGE boosters for Phe and I. I'll be sure to keep you all updated on her new journey 🖤 https://photos.app.goo.gl/2QjV11aPuaTyspsh6 One of OOP's Comments: Commenter: Hope the place you’re sending him to does keep you updated, we’re all quite invested in Phoenix. OOP: It didn't cross my mind to mention her fan base, lol. But I will tomorrow when I drop her off. I'll channel my inner PR skills and show them that happy fans = donations and exposure. Surly any non-profit organization would want that? OOP adds I also plan to write a check towards her care before I leave. Update Post 8: August 1, 2025 (Next day, 11 days from OG post) Title: Onto her next journey Phe and I left for rehab super early this morning. Too early for her to be interested in breakfast apparently, so this is the mess she made while ravenously eating her lunch while I stopped for gas. She did surprisingly well on the car ride, I heard her throwing her toys around and tapping the sides of the tote with her beak. Shortly before we got there, I gave her a pep talk about being strong and showing them all what she can do. I reminded her of all of her friends and family, birds and humans! She checked into rehab this morning. The gal who worked the front desk was lovely and excited to meet her. I filled out forms, left my address, numbers and email. I also wrote in the margin that I would love updates and mentioned her fans as well as left my reddit post info (perhaps overkill). I brought towels, blankets, treats, foods and cleaning supplies to donate, as well as some cash for her. I said my goodbyes and wished her well, she seemed a little scared and so small in her little purple tote. It was a lonely ride home. I wrote an email to the master rehabilitator as well as the president of the organization about her history with me, her progress and her friends on reddit. I mentioned that I would be willing to donate more if she needs and that maybe her reddit friends would as well, I hope I didn't sound like a buffoon. Oh well, any of you crow parents would do the same. I also mentioned that she had lived in my neighborhood with her family, so that I would be willing to pick her up and take her home when she's ready. Or at least, that I would like to be a part of it. So that's that. All we can do now is hope that they don't find any injuries that will prevent her from having quality of life. I trust her new caretakers will do what is in her best interest. I'll let you all in on everything I hear from them. I am in knots waiting to hear how her first examination goes. Image 1 Image 2 Image 3 One of OOP's Comments: Commenter: Is the rehab in Garrison MN? I think I found the place and I will donate in honor of you and Phoenix OOP: Garrison, MN. In Crow Wing county! Like another commenter mentioned, a great omen :) Update Post 9: August 5, 2025 (4 days later, 2 weeks from OG post) Title: Phoenix rehab update! Our little warrior princess is still alive and fighting her way through rehab. I did not get this update but another redditor had send an email regarding making a donation and they emailed him back this: "I am sorry for the delay, animals come before emails! Your crow is doing okay, but we are concerned that it may have West Nile Virus. We have sent in a test and are waiting for results at this point. In the meantime we have been force feeding via tongs approximately every 20 minutes or so, similar to what we do for our infant birds, to keep the metabolism up and running. Once you lose that it can be hard to get back. We are hopeful! We have recently become eligible for paypal facebook fundraisers, so I wonder if that is a way that you would be able to donate. We have had others from the UK have issues in the past as well, which is what motivated the addition of the Facebook Fundraisers. We also do use venmo, so if that is something that would work for you I can send that information o you as well. Best, Grace Grace Frickenstein Wild and Free Wildlife Program Coordinator" ....So that's what we know so far. She's still alive and maybe fighting off one of the deadliest diseases known to crows!? Image OOP's Comments: OOP: It was our dear friend u/crow-magnon-69 that gave me this update. So please, everyone, send her all the karma/awards and all the thanks! I could kiss her! crow-magnon-69: cheers! I replied back that Venmo doesn't work but FB donate looks like it can (but I wont put any of my personal info in any meta product, all fake email/names etc). So for the time being if you can't use the donate page they have an amazon wishlist. I replied with this info and said "I'll buy some things from amazon wishlist (I know it all helps but in my head i think why is buying a bunch of zipties going to the help the crow lol)." and got another response: "Thank you! Yes, actually our zipties are a lifesaver around here, we use them for just about anything that might need temporary patching, like closing the extra little doorways on bird cages that slide up and down. Our smarter birds, so often our crows and other corvids, often figure them out and then we come in the next morning to a loose crow! Zip ties nip that right in the bud! We appreciate your support from across the pond! I always tell people, animals are the best way to bring people together! Let me know if you need anything! Our shipping address for Amazon is 27264 MN-18 Garrison, MN 56450" so yes - everything is needed or appreciated! edit: the amazon wishlist is at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2LYZN5QR9KNP1?ref_=wl_share OOP added in a comment 3 days ago: I think so too. I called yesterday and the gal at the front desk said she is still doing well. That's all she knew, though. I am hoping for a more detailed update eventually. Hopefully.... To another user the next day: I talked to the receptionist the other day. All she knew was that Phoenix was doing well. I wish there was more. They are either very busy or not very invested in social media. There has been a lot of damaging storms here in Minnesota and North Dakota. I saw another rescue in Minnesota talking about all the extra animals they tend to receive after such storms. So perhaps their hands are full as well. Editor's note: I live in Minnesota when not traveling for work. Can confirm we had some nasty storms. And crow-magnon-69 added: I got an email yesterday saying they had received my items from their amazon wish list, so i cheekily asked for an update saying some photos or videos would be fab. reply: I will see about having our intern put some posts up on facebook! so... keep your eyes peeled! NEW UPDATE (made after this BORU post) Post: August 12, 2025 Hi guys. I have some sad news about our girl, she did indeed have west nile and succumbed to it yesterday. The gal that I spoke to said they had been force feeding her and it seemed to be perking her up, but then she started going down hill again and yesterday they found her unresponsive. Apparently they are seeing a lot of crows with west nile right now and they are requesting that anyone who is finding an unusual amount of sick/dead crows report them to your dnr so that they can monitor the situation. I know it's not the outcome we were hoping for. She made a courageous and unusually long fight against it. The staff were aware of her support and popularity and did mention their thanks to everyone who donated and sent kind words. I'm sure with everything they've been seeing in their west nile cases, they did not want to give false hope too early by making public posts, especially when things can suddenly turn sour, which I am now appreciating. The lady I spoke to was very friendly and seemed genuinely sad when she told me the news. Let's hope they soon find a way to treat this horrid disease. In the meantime, give all your crow buddies an extra treat or 2. You just never know when you'll feed them their last peanut. submitted by /u/LucyAriaRose to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

AITA for demanding my friend pay to clean my house?
Here I am with probably the most disgusting AITA I have ever heard of. It’s winter and so we have a humidifier going in the living room. I had a friend with her 11 year old over. He wanted to watch a movie so I put on Disney+ and his mom and I went to talk in the kitchen. We ended up stepping outside so I could show her what my plans were for our garden this spring. She’s really into homesteading and had great advice. When we were done, we went back in the house and eventually went back to the living room. It smelled really weird in there and I have a very sensitive nose. It kind of smelled like pee so I wondered if my cats peed in there but they were all in hiding because we had people over. It really bothered me and I kept investigating before I realized the blue water holder of the humidifier was green…. I pulled it out and it smelled like pee. I was talking out loud while doing all of this and her son was basically like “yeah I peed in that. I think it’s really cool how it makes my pee just disappear!” To which I immediately wanted to vomit and burn my entire house down. I was stunned and so disgusted and the mom was like shocked. She excused herself and her kid and left. It turns out he has a humidifier in his room to help with his chapped lips/dry nose and he’s being doing that in his room for months. I threw my humidifier away and realized I never wanted to go into my living room again because there is piss mist all over the room. The mom asked if there was anything she could do to make it up to me and offered to buy me a new humidifier but I said I’m fine with just never owning another humidifier, but I would really appreciate if she would split with me or pay the cost to have my living room professionally cleaned. I want the carpet, sofa, and drapes steam cleaned, the walls cleaned, and every nook and cranny cleaned. The idea of even walking into my living room makes my skin crawl. She said that was too much and she can just buy me a new humidifier. She didn’t plan on doing any cleaning to her sons room. She kind of sees it as a nonissue. I’m so disgusted but I feel like she should at least split the cost of the professional cleaning. She’s refusing and calling me the AH for trying to take advantage of the situation to get my living room cleaned. We’re kind of in a stand off and I’m wondering if I’m being an Ah? Is this really asking for too much? submitted by /u/beaversm26 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

PSA Regarding COVID-19: A Warning
[NEW: As requested, a downloadable PDF version of this document is now available to email to relatives] If you just want to learn how to reduce your risk of catching COVID-19, scroll down to the "Risk Reduction" section. However, to appreciate the full scope of the challenge ahead, you are encouraged to carefully read this entire document, which will be updated regularly as long as it stays on the front page of your sub. The aim of this document is simple: it's best to walk into something knowing what you're about to face. It also aims to reduce anxiety, panic, and misinformation by arming you with key sourced information, all without downplaying the risks of COVID-19. The document has gone through hundreds of iterations thanks to global community feedback, including from places such as Seattle, LA, Australia, and Canada. Although all facts are meticulously sourced from experts in their fields, you are responsible for your own health and your own research. Further, contextualization of information remains an ongoing challenge, as does keeping up with a fluid situation. Final word will always belong to the health authorities, as well as the mods of this subreddit. Now brace yourself, because this is going to suck a little bit. CONTEXT: A recent in-depth study has shown just how incredibly infectious COVID-19 is. Unfortunately, its spread has not slowed, and the virus has only been halted through stringent physical distancing measures. In other words, and as the Director of the WHO himself has said, this is not a drill. The bad news: There are currently over 420,000 global confirmed cases of COVID-19, and the WHO has classified it as a pandemic. Now it seems that it has arrived upon your doorstep, which means there is likely exponential and silent human-to-human transmission in the community. The good news: knowledge is a weapon that defeats these things. It worked in 1918 against the Spanish Flu, when we essentially stopped the medieval practice of blood-letting (you know when they drained you of blood because they thought that would cure whatever ailed you? Or leeching?). And it worked against many other outbreaks since: Smallpox, MERS, SARS, Ebola, etc. The WHO's tackling of Smallpox alone was nothing short of scientific heroism. And so, a hundred years after 1918, here we are again, facing perhaps the greatest test of our generation. The problem is that these days we're inundated with so much information that, when a real threat comes along, it's buried under a mountain of clutter. And although this document is not all-encompasing by any means, hopefully it will help you see through some of that clutter, as well as give those new to the threat an opportunity to hit the ground running. So go ahead and meet your foe. Do not underestimate it. Now prepare to go to war. IMPORTANT: The main mode of transmission is via respiratory droplets: coughing, sneezing, and breathing. But you can also get it through shaking hands, kissing somebody who is sick, or touching a contaminated surface (droplet dispersion; think of a cough plume settling). This can include handrails, doorknobs, elevator buttons, and surfaces prone to a droplet dispersion cloud. "Cough dispersion" basically means anytime a sick person coughs, they're dispering a plume of droplets over a given area. The viral particles within those droplets then settle on ordinary surfaces. People touch those surfaces then touch their phones or their faces, which in turn lead to contact with their eyes, mouth, or nose, inducing infection. Therefore it is best to keep a 6 ft "coughing distance" from people, and treat everything you touch in public as if it's been contaminated (see the "Risk Reduction" section below). Here's an excellent short video on the topic. Read a little more on the subject here. [AWAITING PEER REVIEW, BUT IS GAINING ACCEPTANCE IN THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY] There now appears to be evidence the virus can spread through breathing. Michael Osterholm, PhD, MPH, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota: "The findings [of the study] confirm that COVID-19 is spread simply through breathing, even without coughing. Don't forget about hand washing, but at the same time we've got to get people to understand that if you don't want to get infected, you can't be in crowds. Social distancing is the most effective tool we have right now." Source. (Crucial to understand: the research specifies patients who are symptomatic, and makes no claims about asymptomatic transfer.) UPDATE: Dr. Osterholm just went on the Joe Rogan show to explain the situation. Although the show itself has been known to be controversial, the Doctor's credentials speak for themselves. [AWAITING PEER REVIEW] A new study indicates COVID-19 can survive in the air for up to 3 hours, and several days on surfaces, depending on the surface (up to 3 days on plastic, up to 2 days on metal, up to 1 day on cardboard). (Article | Study). Here's a shadowgraph imaging of people breathing (source). Unfortunately it is a bit misleading as it does not show drop dispersion, but gets the point across. [AWAITING PEER REVIEW] New analysis seems to indicate infected people without symptoms might be driving the spread of coronavirus more than we realized (CNN link, with links to multiple studies in the article). This is corroborated by Dr. Norman Swan on March 14th, via ABC Australia, who says "you are infectious before the symptoms come out, there's no question about that." The WHO says you are infectious for about 48 hours prior to showing first symptoms. (Source 1: Dr. Swan: see minute mark 4:02 in this health alert video), (Source 2). ALERT: It is now generally believed that this is the reason the virus is taking so many communities by surprise: it spreads during that crucial asymptomatic/low-symptom stage. WARNING: March 16th Article, based on fresh research: "80% of COVID-19 spreads from people who don't know they are sick" ( Article | Study | Discussion 1 | Discussion 2 ) WARNING: We are past containment. It is now vital to flatten the curve and implement physical distancing measures. A short GIF on how we stop the virus from spreading. Up to 1 in 5 infected people may require hospitalization source 1, source 2. But this is an oversimplification as the metric skews toward the elderly and those with comorbidities (see the Mortality/Comorbidities section below). Plus the metrics differ based on region and testing capacity. Excellent short video on the topic. Here's a breakdown of the above: Approximately 80% of laboratory confirmed patients have had mild to moderate disease, which includes non-pneumonia and pneumonia cases. 13.8% have had severe disease requiring hospitalization, and 6.1% were critical, requiring the ICU (respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction/failure). (These numbers are as of Feb 20, 2020, based on 55,924 laboratory confirmed cases in China, from the WHO report.) Update: European Society of Intensive Care Medicine is reporting a 10% ICU rate, and has issued a word of warning. Due to the highly infectious nature of COVID-19, the danger is not just the mortality rate for the vulnerable, but the possibility of overwhelming the health infrastructure, which in turn causes unnecessary fatalities. As it stands, it wouldn't take much to overwhelm hospitals, hence why it's important to start taking preventative measures now (outlined in the Risk Reduction section below)—especially because hospitals are already burdened with a heavy flu season (in the Northern hemisphere, that is). For example, if only 10 out of every 1000 people required a bed, we'd already be coming up short, as in the USA there are only 2.77 beds for every 1000 people, and 2.58 in Canada. Why is this important? In South Korea, 4 in 22 deaths happened while waiting to be hospitalized (source in Korean, as well as a discussion about it), and that's from South Korea, who is #2 in the world bedcount-wise with 12.27 beds per 1000 people. And of course many beds will already be occupied for regular patients. Toronto Star soberly warns hospitals can’t cope if coronavirus outbreak worsens in Canada: March 6th. A surgeon working in the heart of Italy's outbreak gives a harrowing testimony and urges everyone to heed the warning that it can easily overwhelm hospitals (translation / Original). This is a "novel" virus, which means the immune system has never been exposed to it and therefore everyone is susceptible. There is no vaccine, nor do authorities expect one for some time. A superb short video by Kurzgesagt on how the virus works, among other thigns of note. People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest). (Source: CDC) Update: March 18th: Young people are getting extremely sick from coronavirus, according to new evidence ( article | discussion ). A young person's dire warning. Update: March 17th: "Prepare to see COVID-19 cases rising. That doesn't mean social distancing has failed: Impacts won't be apparent for at least two weeks and probably longer, experts say" (source) Update: "Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now | Politicians, Community Leaders and Business Leaders: What Should You Do and When?" (link) Update: Excellent quick read on how normalcy lulls and how quickly this thing can hit, by The Washington Post: "When a danger is growing exponentially, everything looks fine until it doesn’t" (link | archive link) Update: CNN: "Take this seriously. Coronavirus is about to change your life for a while" (link) Update: WHO director: "We are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction." (link) Update: "Any country that looks at the experience of other countries with large epidemics and thinks that it won’t happen to us is making a deadly mistake," warned the WHO. Update: "People infected with #COVID19 can still infect others after they stop feeling sick, so these measures should continue for at least 2 weeks after symptoms disappear. Visitors should not be allowed until the end of this period. There are more details in WHO’s guidance" (Source: WHO) Update: March 17th: Short video of the situation in a hospital in Bergamo, Italy. Update: March 20th: "Not sure we've communicated well enough that social distancing interventions will pay dividends in 1-3 weeks. Anything that happens in the next 10 days was already baked in prior to that. A surge in cases now would NOT mean that social distancing isn't working." —Kate Allen, Science reported for Toronto Star Update: Viewer discretion is advised: A heartbreaking look into the frontlines of an Italian hospital. Do not underestimate this virus. PSYCHOLOGY: Do not panic, but give yourself permission to feel fear. Fear gets you prepared. As for panic, all one has to do is look at the crowded halls of Wuhan hospitals during the early phases of the outbreak to understand how panic worsens problems. A jolt of fear is all right, as it gets you moving in the right direction. After that point, however, you must turn to thinking clearly, level-headedly, and listen to your local health authorities. As for what you can do, follow the steps in the "Risk Reduction" section below. Ignoring this threat will only make it worse, as it preys on your underestimation of it. That underestimation may cost you your life, or the life of a loved one. Upon first learning about the extent of the threat, you may become anxious and hyper aware and start taking extra pecautions. This is normal, what psychologists call an adjustment reaction. A short guide on how to cope. Normalcy bias plays a factor. So does denial. You may hear things like "it's just a flu, nothing to worry about." It is dangerously inaccurate to compare COVID-19 to the flu. Facing the threat will help you prepare for it while denial puts you and your loved ones at risk. People in denial may take foolish risks like attend crowded events during an active outbreak, or fail to take precautionary measures, thereby accidentally passing the virus on to others. Denial also slows community response. Here is an excellent Harvard piece on reactions and overreactions, denial versus panic, and the five principle bulwarks against denial. It is short and absolutely worth your time. For officials, crisis management teaches us that it is important not to downplay a threat, otherwise you may lose the public's trust. Do not fear inducing a panic (see the aforementioned paper). The public needs you to be clear, informative, competent, and proactive. Studies such as this one about the 1918 pandemic have shown just how effective a proactive approach can be on the part of leadership. But look what can happen on the other end of the spectrum. Update: A warning for leadership. Update: Speed trumps perfection. Astronaut Chris Hadfield provides useful steps to productive self-isolation Here's what mental health experts have to say on how to stay calm during the pandemic. Also, two pyschology doctors have published a self-help guide on managing worry and anxiety during the coronavirus crisis. If you're still experiencing distress, please consider visiting COVID-19 mental health support. RISK REDUCTION: Think of those in your life who are vulnerable (see the Comorbidities section). If not for yourself, do it for them. To reiterate, we are past containment. It is now vital to flatten the curve and implement physical distancing measures. Practice physical distancing. Here's why it works. An excellent visual example of why it works. Do not touch your face (practice this one at home, as it's harder than you think). After every outing, wash your hands and disinfect your phone (the virus can likely live up to 96 hours on phone screens). And you're probably washing your hands wrong. Here's a short 1.5 minute tutorial by the WHO. Carry disinfectant with you. But if you don't have any, know that soap works better than alcohol and disinfectants at destroying the structure of viruses (source) Do not shake hands. While in public, try to keep a coughing distance from people, which is at least 6 feet. Treat everything you touch in public as a contaminated surface. If you use a travel mug, be sure to disinfect it after every outing. Disinfect doorknobs and often-touched places, especially keyboards and phones. Also disinfect reusable shopping bags, wallets, keys. Take initiative and disinfect doorknobs and elevator buttons in your building. Do not wait for management to do it for you. Keep disinfectant by every entrance to your house. Avoid anyone who is coughing, and stay away from poorly ventilated places. Stay away from crowds. Wear a mask in public when possible (study | discussion | article) Cough into your elbow, or preferably into a tissue that is disposed of into the trash. While in public, only touch things with your knuckle, a glove, or your sleeve. Touch elevator buttons with the tip of your key. Ask your boss to work from home as many transmissions happen at work. There is a global shortage of face masks. If you have extra, be prepared to donate some should the hospitals/care homes send a call out to the community. If you have extra bottles of hand-sanitizer, please consider sharing them with those who do not have any. This is about working together, and minimizing community spread helps everyone within the community, including you and your loved ones. Take extra precautions when shopping for groceries, even when buying online. Have 14 days of food in your home in case you are ordered under quarantine. There's nothing wrong with preparatory shopping in case of quarantine, but be careful not to do this once an outbreak has been declared in your city, as you may be lining up alongside sick people. At that point, it is better to shop at night/off hours, and after taking careful precautions. Or consider ordering your groceries online. Don't share a cup. Don't share eating utensils. Don't share a toothbrush. In fact, don't share anything that comes in direct contact with your mouth or nose. Keep air circulating. Dispersing droplets can keep you from getting a hefty, infectious dose. Open a window; turn on a fan. (source) Use a humidifier. Keeping the humidity up will keep the protective membranes in your nose from drying out, which makes them less effective as they try to keep pathogens out. Mid-range humidity also appears to cause some viruses to decay faster. Besides practicing physical distancing, always remember the top three: disinfect your phone, don't touch that ugly face of yours, and wash your filthy hands. After every outing. Seriously, if there's one thing you take away from this, do these three things. They may just save your life, or the life of a loved one. A nifty GIF to show the importance of taking precautions now. Be proactive. How can you help? INCUBATION PERIOD: People generally develop signs and symptoms, including mild respiratory symptoms and fever, on an average of 5.1 days after intial infection. 97.5% develop symptoms within 11.5 days. Please note mortality will differ from region to region based on regional comorbidities, as well as a host of other variables such as healthcare infrastructure, response measures taken, etc.) Age % of population % of infected Fatality 0-9 12.0% 0.9% 0 10-19 11.6% 1.2% 0.1% 20-29 13.5% 8.1% 0.2% 30-39 15.6% 17.0% 0.2% 40-49 15.6% 19.2% 0.4% 50-59 15.0% 22.4% 1.3% 60-69 10.4% 19.2% 3.6% 70-79 4.7% 8.8% 8.0% 80+ 1.8% 3.2% 14.8% ADDITIONALS: The Average time from first symptoms to death is estimated to be 18 days (source paper).
