I went down a rabbit hole on who owns every power tool brand. The difference between the two big conglomerates is wild.
Been buying tools for about 15 years and I always kind of knew Milwaukee and Ryobi were related somehow. Never really looked into it. Last week I finally did and ended up going way deeper than I expected. Turns out the story of who owns what, and what they did after they bought it, explains a lot about why some brands keep getting better and others turned to shit. I wrote up what I found - figured you guys would appreciate it. TTI, a Hong Kong company called Techtronic Industries, owns Milwaukee. They also own Ryobi and make Ridgid tools. They bought Milwaukee from Atlas Copco in 2005 for about $626 million. Stanley Black & Decker owns DeWalt, Craftsman, Black+Decker, Porter-Cable, Irwin, and Lenox. They've blown through over $6 billion in acquisitions since 2002. Both bought up everything on the shelf. But their post-acquisition strategies have been completely different. TTI bought Milwaukee and basically left it alone. Kept the R&D in Brookfield, WI. Kept the engineering team. Dumped $206 million into R&D in one year. Milwaukee's Wisconsin workforce went from 900 people to over 4,000 since 2016. They launched M12 and M18 within two years of buying the brand. That is how to do acquisitions properly. Now contrast SBD. They bought Craftsman from Sears in 2017 for $900 million. Said they were going to "bring back its American manufacturing heritage." Built a $90 million automated factory in Fort Worth. Was supposed to employ 500 people. Long story short, the automation didn't work. Ratchets were coming out of the press misshapen. Sockets went through heat treating without the brand name stamped on them. Metal wasn't getting fully punched out. Retailers couldn't get complete sets so they canceled orders. The executive who launched the project left in 2020 and got replaced by four different people in four years. The SEC later hit the company for failing to disclose $1.3 million in exec perks including private jet use. They shut it down in March 2023. 175 workers at the end. Not 500. The few tool sets that factory actually produced are now collectors' items on eBay. A $90 million factory that ran for about three years and its main legacy is collectible (because of how awful they are) socket sets. Unreal. Craftsman wrenches are made in India now. Their quality perception score dropped from 61 to 55, the biggest decline in the whole tool category. Milwaukee held flat. And Porter-Cable got it even worse. Brand was founded in 1906. Invented the portable belt sander. The Smithsonian collected their company history in 1996. SBD bought them in 2004 and just let them rot. Router line discontinued. Social media went dark for years. No new products. You can still find some stuff at Tractor Supply but the brand is basically dead. Here's an interesting detail I found. TTI, the company that turned Milwaukee into what it is today, actually manufactured Craftsman cordless tools for Sears back in 1987. They literally knew how to make good Craftsman tools. SBD bought the name and couldn't even keep a factory running. The difference is pretty simple. TTI let Milwaukee run itself. Own R&D, own engineering, own identity. Ryobi does its thing for DIY, Milwaukee does its thing for pros. They don't eat each other. SBD merged everything into one corporate blob, bought so many brands they were competing with themselves, and then starved the weaker ones to feed DeWalt. Four different heads of the tools division in four years. A $2 billion "cost reduction program." They didn't build anything. They just cut. The numbers tell the rest. TTI did $14.6 billion in revenue last year with $44 million in net debt. Milwaukee grew 11.6%. SBD is carrying $6.1 billion in long-term debt, took $141 million in restructuring charges, and just announced they're closing their plant in New Britain, CT. That's the city where Stanley was literally founded in 1843. 300 jobs gone from the hometown. I know this sub has its opinions on brands already. Not trying to start another Milwaukee vs DeWalt discussion. But I think the corporate story behind why some brands keep getting better and others keep getting worse is worth understanding. It's the same pattern you see in every industry once the conglomerates show up. A few brands never sold. Klein has been family-owned since 1857, sixth generation, still private. Makita has been independent since 1915. Knipex is family-owned, makes the best pliers I've ever used and nobody's buying them out. And Milwaukee proves that getting acquired doesn't have to mean getting gutted. TTI just gave enough of a shit to invest in what they bought. Edit: This blew up way more than expected - thank you! Got a ton of messages asking if I'm doing more of these. Putting together a newsletter - same sort of teardowns, different industries. Will expand this piece there. Klein Tools Flickblade vs Milwaukee Fastback
Saw the KT Flickblade today for the first time and fell in love immediately. Orange is my favorite color and KT is my go to for electrician tools as a Homeowner/DIYer. $17 seemed like a decent sale price. Decided to check in on the MKE Fastback because I've managed to avoid temptation for two holiday seasons in a row now... Well I can get a two pack for $18 which means gifting one to family. Do I need either? No because I got a custom Leatherman Wave that I EDC last year and have quite a few utility knives and liner lock knives already. Tell me I'm dumb. Tell me to stop. It's so pretty. submitted by /u/Aeyix to r/Tools [link] [comments]

The Emergency is Here
Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez Zeferino, a 25-year-old farmworker and union organizer with Familias Unidas por la Justicia, was seized by ICE in broad daylight. He was driving his partner to work. No charges. No criminal record. Just a shattered window and a silenced voice. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a lawful U.S. resident and union member, was deported without warning or trial. He was taken from his home and placed in CECOT, the mega-prison in El Salvador designed not to rehabilitate but to break people. He had no criminal history. His only offense was being poor, brown, and visible in a political climate that treats those identities as threats. Both men were union members. One was an organizer. The other was simply trying to live. And both are now gone. These are not isolated incidents. They are not bureaucratic errors. They are disappearances—intentional removals of people tied to labor, community, and visibility. And they are part of a larger authoritarian pattern. Disappearance has always been the tool of regimes that fear dissent. It is how you stop resistance before it starts. You do not need mass arrests to collapse a movement. You need to remove the ones who might lead it. Make examples of them. And do it in silence so the rest are too scared to speak. In May 1933, Adolf Hitler did not begin with war. He began with labor. He dissolved Germany’s independent unions. The Nazis raided union halls, seized assets, and disappeared leaders. In their place, they installed the German Labor Front, a state-controlled entity that destroyed worker autonomy. It was one of the first major acts of Nazi power. Not because unions were dangerous at the time but because they had the potential to be. That same understanding is alive in this administration. Trump is not hiding his intent. He has publicly stated his desire to send those he despises to foreign prisons beyond U.S. law. He has said it plainly: he does not care if they are guilty. Guilt is irrelevant when the goal is control. One of his top national security advisors recently claimed that critics of deportation policy could be considered as aiding terrorism. This is how dissent becomes criminalized. This is how advocacy is reframed as treason. This is how public fear is weaponized to serve political power. It is not about border security. It is about erasing the people who refuse to stay silent. Nazi authoritarianism did not begin with genocide. It began with fear. Joseph Goebbels and the Nazi propaganda machine conditioned the public to see compassion as weakness and solidarity as betrayal. They used books, posters, and school curriculum to normalize suspicion, obedience, and silence. That strategy is being repackaged today. The tools are different, but the intent is the same: isolate, erase, and dehumanize. Train the public to look away. Encourage them to believe that those who vanish deserved it. Redefine care as criminal. Redefine justice as threat. This is not immigration enforcement. It is political warfare through disappearance. And if we allow it to continue—if we justify it, minimize it, or wait until it affects us directly—then we are participating in the silence that authoritarianism depends on. You do not need barbed wire and torchlit parades to lose a democracy. You just need enough people to stop caring when their neighbors vanish. This is not happening in the future. This is the present. This is what it looks like right now. So the question is not whether more people will be taken. The question is how many more we will let disappear before we say “enough!” If you have ever wondered what you would have done in 1933, you already have your answer. PSA Don’t buy Klein from Home Depot or Lowes
During NECA 2023, I had a conversation with a Klein Rep while having drinks, and he joked about sending lower quality tools to "Big Box Stores" because the average homeowner would buy them. Although he didn't confirm or deny it when sober, I decided to check it out. I used my credit card rewards to buy some tools from Home Depot and compared them to the same tools from my local supply house. After 7 months of daily use, my apprentice passed his j-man test and we compared tools as we were setting up his van. The linesman from Home Depot were tighter at the pivot, making them more difficult to use, and there was a chip on the cutting edge. On the other hand, the supply house models were well broken in and had a clean cutting edge. As for the strippers, mine broke in the winter, and I went back to using my Rack A Tiers. However, my apprentice still has the glow-in-the-dark strippers we bought in December. Both pairs of drivers have held up fine. After this comparison, I am convinced that the Klein Rep's statement is true, and I have decided to avoid purchasing tools from big box stores unless absolutely necessary. I have returned to using my trusty 9-year-old tools, and I believe my apprentice now has a good set of tools to carry him into his first year as a J-Man starting tomorrow! submitted by /u/Cjwillys9596 to r/electricians [link] [comments]

Unpopular opinion: I hate Klein Tools
Ok, like all of us, when I began my apprenticeship I had virtually all Klein Tools. But over the years I slowly replaced all of my kleins with, what I believe, are superior tools. Better quality, easier to use, more comfortable to handle tools no matter how much it costs is always worth it if it makes my day/job easier. Klein Tools are synonymous with electricians but all of mine are in the “f*** it bucket” in the basement. It started with my screwdrivers wearing out, then constantly having to replace my wire skinners to the point where I always had a new pair in the truck as a backup. Don’t even get me started on the linesman pliers, how anyone uses those I’ll never understand. Soft metal, poor leverage and a terrible cutting edge. There’s not a single Klein Tool I like or would ever recommend to a professional. TL;DR Klein tools are cheap, easily wear out, feel like crap. Brands like Wiha, Wera & Knipex are far superior in quality, reliability and comfort. submitted by /u/Electrician_Logician to r/electricians [link] [comments]

Are Klein tools any good?
So I need a new pair of linesman and my local electrical store (and a few people I work with) swear by Klein, probably because of said people at electrical store. I'm not looking to spend $60 or anything crazy, but I need a decent brand to last me a while. Are Klein tools that good or is there a lesser known brand that is comparable or better? P.S. I'm mainly skeptical because many of the people that swear by them are using older tools, but I've heard that the newer ones aren't as good. Is this true? submitted by /u/gomezz34 to r/Tools [link] [comments]

I am Ezra Klein, a columnist/blogger for the Washington Post, and I have an elections tool that can predict presidential races with three points. AMA.
First time at this, so forgive me if I'm messing up the form. I'm Ezra Klein. I write for the Washington Post and Bloomberg View, and I'm a policy analyst at MSNBC. I've also been working for the last few months to build an elections forecasting tool that lets people plug in expected values for economic growth and June presidential approval and get a fair read on how the election is likely to go. It's my way of trying to step back from the tornado of idiocy that is the day-to-day in this election. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/create-your-own-election/2012/04/24/gIQAuaOIeT_blog.html) So I'd love if you asked me about that. But really, you can ask me about most anything. I'll be answering from 12:30-1:30. Update: Twitter verification that this is, indeed, me: http://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/194802290484449281 Update 2: And let me emphasize that you can ask me about non-model issues. I want to promote my project a bit. But I don't want to bore people. Update 3: I cheated and answered some early. But Ill be back at 1230 now! Update 4: Alright, folks, I have to run. thanks! submitted by /u/ezra_klein to r/IAmA [link] [comments]
