Each panel is roughly 23x40” and were designed based on thematic elements that my customer wanted to see visually represented (landscape with citadel, rising sun, waterfalls, fruit trees, and fish in a winding river). Because these are rolling barn doors, these pieces are intended to look “complete” as standalone images, but come together to form one larger image when the doors are closed. I created this piece using my scroll saw and shaping with a rotary tool (and a ton of hand sanding) before reassembling. There are 382 individually cut pieces in here, made from 19 species (listed on slide 14). No paints, stains, or dyes were used to color it. Photos attached include final shots once installed, as well as the pictures I snagged before sending them off to be attached to the prefabricated doors (thus the difference in lighting/color). A customer called and said that her landscaper installed lights for her but they needed me to install an outlet to plug them in. When I showed up I asked him where the transformer was and he said “what’s that?” I then uncovered what he installed under the newly laid grass and he had attached a male plug head on each 12v light and then ran an extension cord under the grass and taped up half of them, and the other half had the rainproof extension cord covers. I recently did a small backyard lighting upgrade and realized how much time I wasted over the years with cheap solar lights. They were never reliable. Some nights they’d be dead before I even got home. The light was that cold, bluish white — not flattering at all and totally killed the mood. Half of them would fail after a month or two. Either water got in, or the panels just stopped charging. I used to think solar lights were the “green and easy” option — no wires, low maintenance, etc. But honestly? They ended up being more of a short-term headache than a long-term solution. This time, I decided to install a low-voltage system. Yes, running the wires was more work, but the difference is incredible. I added path lights and recessed step lights into some stone stairs — that part took the most effort — but now the yard feels completely different. Warm, consistent, actually usable lighting. Sitting outside at night now feels relaxing instead of frustrating. Kinda kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I’m wondering — are people avoiding low-voltage just because they think the wiring’s too complicated? Or is there just not enough info out there? After this experience, I honestly think it’s way more worth it than solar in the long run. Also, curious — what brands are people using for their low-voltage landscape systems?
