I turned my useless segmented ceiling light into a wind compass with Home Assistant
I’m an avid kitesurfer, so wind direction and speed are always on my mind. Knowing what the wind is doing helps decide whether it’s worth heading to the beach and if the conditions might be good for a session. I bought a segmented Govee ceiling light some time ago, but never really had a good use for the segments since the built-in scenes were pretty disappointing. Until now we mostly used the lamp as a super bright “cleaning light”. Using Home Assistant, I pull wind bearing and wind speed from a weather integration (Met.no in my case) and expose them as sensors. A small YAML script then maps the wind bearing to one of the lamp’s 11 LED segments and lights a three-segment “arrow” that points to the current wind direction. The center segment shows the direction, while the two neighboring segments are dimmed to create a clearer pointer effect. Wind speed controls the color using a windy.com-style scale (blue, green, yellow, orange, purple), so you can quickly see both direction and strength at a glance. I also added a configurable offset helper so the compass can be calibrated depending on how the light is mounted on the ceiling. It’s obviously not a precision wind meter, but since we live by the sea it gives a quick visual indication of the general wind conditions outside. The whole setup runs through Home Assistant automations, a YAML script controlling the segments via Govee2MQTT, and a couple of helpers to make the setup easy to tweak without editing the script. Quite happy with the outcome (: submitted by /u/DasYossif to r/homeassistant [link] [comments]

Replacing a Shower Light Fixture, Any Experance with Flush LED Lights?
I tried posting this before but accidently advertised the new light. Hopefully this fixes the issue. (Sorry Mods, Don't ban me if I messed up again with this post, I just want advice 🙏). I have a light fixture in my shower (Picture 1) that has rusting brass and I'm looking to replace the fixture with a new LED Ceiling light (Picture 2) that doesn't require a metal tube in the attic space. My attic space has loose, shredded insolation material, not fiberglass rolls. Does anyone have experience with these types of LED light fixtures, if so, is it worth installing it or should I just go with a standard tube & bulb ceiling light? Any advice would help claim my nerves. I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing and not about to set my house on fire. Also, BTW I am aware of the bathroom vent is crooked, that is a separate project. submitted by /u/blueipDriver to r/DIY [link] [comments]

I remodelled my girlfriend's bathroom because of failed waterproofing
(EDIT: please excuse some of the weird AI blurriness around the bottom edges of some pics: I shot these with a super wide 10mm lens with terrible sensor crop/vignetting, and I used photoshops refill feature to try clean up the corners, but I just realised it's left some ugly AI-looking funkiness on the very corners) (2nd EDIT: the hole in the ceiling above the shower is for a skylight, I'll install that and finish off the plastering once my partner's bank account recovers from the bathtub purchase. My Girlfriend recently bought her first home; A mid-2000s developer build in Pascoe Vale. Unfortunately, as expected of these kinds of builds in Australia; there was significant water damage due to failed waterproofing in the upstairs shower. This was, however, a good excuse to redo the bathroom for her and get rid of the grey floor tiles, grey wall tiles, grey vanity, and all other depressing mid-2000s developer-build stylings. She also wanted a bathtub, and a frameless shower. The existing bathroom wasn't big enough to achieve this, so I moved some walls and claimed space from an adjoining linen closet for the shower recess. I also had to do some tricky stuff with raising and lowering parts of the floor (difficult because of the truss beam system) to create the appropriate drop for the screed, to accommodate the threshold-less shower. (I did like 6 coats of waterproofing, above and below screed, used the most expensive bond-breaker tape I could source etc. because I did NOT want this bathroom to leak again!). She wanted a timber vanity. We discovered nice timber vanities are insanely expensive. So I built the vanity myself out of some cheap tassie-oak panels from Bunnings. I was very happy with how well that came up. My friends Milwaukee tracksaw made that very easy to do. I also dropped the ceiling by 45mm to create a recessed led "halo" light as the main lighting, which turned out really nice. My partner wanted a clear bathtub because she's a pervert (I'm currently refusing to bath in it for fear of being ogled and objectified). Oh; she would also like it known that she bought this bathtub BEFORE it was featured on The Block. She was not happy when it appeared on the block. (I think she wanted to order her tub, then the supply company go out of business, so she was the only person in Australia to have a clear resin bathtub). It looks fabulous, but it was monstrously difficult to silicone in place due to the caustic effect of the clear resin visually magnifying and emphasising the silicone bead from every angle inside and outside (And also I am not very good at siliconing). The total cost of this renovation was about $12k I think. It took me about 3 months, after work each day and on weekends. (although the amount of tiling here almost killed me). The main costs was the bathtub ($5k), and the bath faucet at ($1.1k), and my mental sanity & hairline (priceless). submitted by /u/khdownes to r/AusRenovation [link] [comments]

I brought this (pic 1) to the Safeway bakery and told the decorator to be as creative as she wanted
The cake had a red buttercream filling and was PERFECT. Story behind: I killed my eldest kid's chickens when we used them for parking practice for my younger kids. I figured the squeaker would alert them if they were too close to the line. Not only did they not hear the squeakers, they drove right the hell over and killed both chickens, which made eldest kid very sad. I wanted to replace them, and it turns out it's cheaper to buy 20 rubber chickens than just two, so I bought the 20, plus 16 minis and one extra-large guy, and hung them all from the ceiling whilst eldest kid was at work (and changed the color of our color-adjustable LED lighting). They said the dead chickens taped to the front door were enough to tip them off that something was amiss, but then entering a red-lit house to find dozens of rubber chickens hanging by their necks inside nearly made them leave again. submitted by /u/AllynWA1 to r/ExpectationVsReality [link] [comments]

It's finally finished!!!
I posted a similar deck to this about a year ago and you guys seemed to like my work. I was fortunate enough to get several deck jobs and this big project out of it. All of which have been wonderful clients so I've been wanting to show you guys this one for a while now and see if any homeowners in my area are looking for someone honest and highly skilled to build a deck for them. My prices are also extremely reasonable. When I start a project, it gets 100% of my focus until its 100% complete! I have many references that can testify to that. I also do most of the work myself because to me, quality matters. I can't stand the idea of someone being able to look at my work and say it was no good. So here are the details of the deck and city where it was built. So Dm me if you have a project or deck youd like me to quote. Also feel free to comment and tell me any mistakes you see or anything you would do differently. Here are the details and city where the deck was built. Deck details: Location: Marietta, Ga Covered area: 28'8"x16'(459 sq ft) framed with all 2x12 PT lumber. Ledger board is properly flashed and fastened to the house with 3⅝" ledgerloks. Joists span the full 16' to a double 2x12 band for maximum space for area below. Upper area has PT 5/4 decking, two 12' sections with double breaker boards in between and a double boarder with mitered corners around the perimeter. This was to avoid having any butt joints in the decking. Ceiling is pine T&G with 8 recessed lights and 2 fans. All support posts and beams are wrapped with treated 1x8 and stained. I wrap the 3 inside pieces but leave the outside piece off until I run the screens which are stapled and then covered by the outside 1x8 piece. The main focal point is the gas fireplace with natural looking stone veneer ledge flats. I installed LEDs under the mantle and behind the tv to create an ambient light look that lights up and accents the stone work. Stain colors were chosen by the homeowners who came up with the 2 tone look idea with the floors being lighter than the boarders, columns, and beams. Which compliments the colors of the furniture they chose. Stain is ReadySeal from Home Depot the floor color is light oak and the rails and columns are Pecan. Lower area also has 8 recessed lights and 2 fans. The ceiling is 4x8' bead board sheets with 1x4 trim covering the seams and all painted semigloss white. The 2 columns are to support the bay window above. They are 6x6 posts wrapped with pvc with base and crown mold installed. Uncovered deck: 12'6"x8' and 4x4'(116 sq ft)upper landing with a flight of stairs with 16 steps landing on a concrete slab landing. Ran a gas line to the gas fireplace and also out to the outside deck for gas grill. The project in total ended up around 56k not counting the extra work I did to other parts of the house. I'm curious if there are any GCs here that can tell me what they would charge for a project of this size with all the finishes . I struggled some to get it done for this and make the money I usually like to make. Thanks for any info and thanks for checking out my work! submitted by /u/PretendParty5173 to r/Decks [link] [comments]

My garage transformation over the past 12 months
Here's my 3-Car garage transformation over the past 12 months. Moved into my house in August 2023 and started the garage build a month later in September. When I bought the house, the garage floor had lots of cracks and wasn't in the best shape. The color inside was this ugly light brown and there were only 2 lights for a ~800 sq.ft. space Started off by pulling all the old stuff out and then painted it white. Prepped the floor, footings and got it coated with polyaspartic. Lights came next, decided to go with dimmable potlights and added additional 3 way switches near both man-doors. I have 2 motorcycles and a summer only car (live in Canada) so I wanted to get a lift to store my vette. This way my wife can park her SUV underneath my car in the winter and there's still lots of room for my bikes and my truck (usually the truck stays on the driveway). My ceilings are just under 11.5ft tall so I installed side mount openers. Now both doors sit about 4 - 5 inches from the ceiling when they're up. Lift is a 4-post (8000 lb capacity) from a company called Lift King (Calgary, AB). My cabinets are also from a Canadian company called Hayley (Calgary, AB). They weren't cheap but the quality is probably unmatched. As long as you take the time to level everything out carefully, installing them wasn't too bad with a second set of hands. I've always loved the look of a corner set but there was a gas line that protruded out so I had to do a build out with 2x4's. Also added some extra electrical while I was at it. With the cabinets not being flush to the wall, I had to get filler strips. Hayley provided the fillers for the side of the cabinets for free but for the top they wanted an absurd amount of money so I just went to a place and bought some thin gage stainless, measured out the bolt holes, drilled them and installed it. They look like a near perfect match and I saved myself a pile of cash. On the back right hand side, I have hot and cold water. I put more cabinets there with a sink. Once again, Hayley wanted a lot of money for the sink cabinet so I just got one from Costco that's the exact length of the cabinet right above it and after tying it all in, it doesn't look bad at all. I wanted a hose reel as well as an electric pressure washer set up so I ran some more lines and got another couple hose bibs set up. Now I got water supply to the sink, hose reel and pressure washer. It's super convenient and does the trick! The backsplash for my cabinets is proslat slatwall, black carbon fibre design. For the walls, I used light gray proslat. I also put in LED light strips under my upper cabinets to give the work bench more light. Garage has two big floor drains so I can wash my vehicles inside if I wanted too. There's a lot of other little miscellaneous stuff I did to make the space function the way I want (wall mounted recycle bins, a fridge, ceiling mount extension reel, etc) but I think I mentioned all the major stuff above. I now have 13 total 15a electrical outlets and also a 50a outlet for a welder. For those of you about to hate saying no work gets done; you couldn't be more wrong. I work on all my vehicles and bikes myself. I've only been in this house for a year but my old place had a similar "done-up" 3-car garage with polyaspartic floors and there were a couple big projects done in there. You can have something be showroom nice and still get shit done in it. I'm pleased with the way its turned out. It's mostly done now, just a few odds and ends left to go! submitted by /u/StonkRizz to r/garageporn [link] [comments]

Can anyone else perceive the flickering of LED lights?
I went to a restaurant with fam and friends today, which had fantastic ceiling lights that looked like big schools of fish. Everybody was marveling at them, but I couldn’t stand it because they were flickering super fast and I could tell they were about to trigger a migraine. Turns out nobody else could see the flickering. Whenever I look at LEDs, at least certain types, I see them flicker and it feels like I’m staring into the sun.
