Playing box for kids (first Arduino project)
My first Arduino project is a kids toy. Some time ago, my kids got a toy box with various switches and lights that intrigued me. I wanted to do something similar and expand on the functions. I got interested in electronics and after some tinkering with "normal" circuits, I got an Arduino Uno starter set and made a plan for the toy. Fast forward three months and it's finished. My box has these functions: Some simple LEDs with different switches and buttons 12 LEDs in a circle connected to a potentiometer. Turning the pot will light up the LEDs one after the other, at varying speed. RGB LED with three different modes (smooth color cycle, blinking color cycle, disco mode) OLED display with a key switch showing different images each time the key is turned An LED that is turned on by touching two connectors with your hands, letting the current flow through you. DC power plug that can be connected to one of three female plugs, each activating a different function: #1: Moving light: 16 LEDs on a row, one of which is activated at a time. A gyroscope reads the tilt of the box. By tilting it left or right, the light is “moved” into this direction. #2 Dancing unicorn: When activated via a switch, a servo (with a dancing unicorn glued to the arm) will turn in random angles #3 Touch sensor activating an LED I first made breadboard prototypes of each function separately. Then I assembled everything in a wooden box that I bought. My woodwork is quite rough - I only have knives, grinding paper and a power drill. It did the job, just not with straight edges ;) The dome was 3D-printed by a friend. The assembly process turned out to be a great challenge for me as I've never build something so complex before. I tried to glue as little as possible, and that turned out to be a good idea because I had to re-position pieces quite a few times. The kids where more excited about the box when I was building it than when it was finished :p But they actually use it and that gives me the most joy. To anyone who's interested I added the code and a link to the full-res schematics at the bottom. I'm happy to hear about any suggestions and tips on what I could have done better. What I learned in this project: - I did a lot of soldering and crimping and got much better/quicker in both. - some uses for capacitors, something that I didn't really get before from the books - I made my first wiring schematic (Fritzing). - Working with shift registers and various modules and sensors (WS2812 LED strip, TTP223 touch sensor, RGB module, SSD1160 OLED screen, TP4056 battery module, boost converter, MPU-6050 gyroscope). - Building a Darlington transistor circuit. - Powering a project with a lithium ion battery and a boost converter - Cables take up more space than I thought. I used 24 AWG / 0,2 mm² stranded cables in the whole project because that's what I had. The box is very, very full now. A Process for EcoTank Friends
Hi everyone! I finally had a moment to share the proxy-making process I've cobbled together across the past few weeks. I'm new to making my own proxies but quickly ironed out a procedure worth sharing. Thank you to everybody who shared proxy-making tips, tricks, and wisdom — I wouldn’t have ventured down this path without you all. FYI I’m using an Epson EcoTank and Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha. Intention: Casual gameplay, Cube, and Jumpstart. You're not trying to sneak into a tournament with counterfeits. Within sleeves the proxies are indistinguishable. The 48# is like an old-school foil, which was ever so sturdier than an average card. Shuffles great. The 42# feels a tiny bit slimmer than a real card. It’s important to recognize recent genuine cards sometimes feel like they’re made from cheaper and thinner materials. Off the top of my head I have a genuine mystical archives (strixhaven) card that feels identical to 42# Koala with laminate. Both 42 and 48 pass the “find the proxy mixed within the real cards” test when sleeved. Cameo 5 Cutting Machine. You’re going to make mistakes and want to refine your methods. Get 200 so you don’t run out. *** The computer stuff (Windows): Silhouette Studio (comes with the Cameo 5 Alpha or other Cameo machines they make). Mandatory if you aren’t going with a manual cutter + corner rounder. Python. Python Releases for Windows | Python.org Microsoft Powershell What to do? GitHub - Alan-Cha/silhouette-card-maker: DIY card games and proxies with Silhouette cutting machines · GitHub Silhouette Card Maker The Github guide and/or separate site by Alan Cha. I made mistakes along the way. Google and YouTube for Python very helpful. Card images come from MPCFill, Discord, and CardConjurer (local). I'll occasionally make my own custom proxies. *** Silhouette Cameo 5 Tips: Alan-Cha's script is amazing. I really don't know how it's created but a tremendous thank you and job well done. The script comes with some trial and error. I experienced some hiccups. Below is what I keep in a plain .txt file with my proxy card images (you'll need to punch this into Powershell each time you want to make new .pdf printouts for Silhouette Studio): python --version python -m pip install --upgrade pip cd **file pathway for "silhouette-card-maker-main"** python -m venv venv Set-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Scope Process .\venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1 pip install -r requirements.txt ***create the actual document by copy and pasting the literal images to GAME_FRONT folder python create_pdf.py --only_fronts --ppi 900 --crop 1.5mm --quality 100 --card_size standard" --I failed at making DFC from the provided instruction by Alan-Cha. It was easier to make two separate .pdf "front" files and turn over a fully printed sheet. You need to follow the physical location of the cards for the DFC to match properly. Alan-Cha's automated process did not work for me; it created mismatched fronts and backs. --The script makes a 4x2 grid of cards. There are ways to "skip" specific cards to leave the space blank. Moving forward I am heavily considering leaving the lower left corner completely blank (7 cards per sheet). You will not need to fuss around with the corner of lower left card being too close to the lower left registration mark. --1 out of 15 sheets will be slightly miscut. I think that's my fault/user error. It sucks when it happens because then you need to print + lam + cut again. --I can successfully print on foil sticker paper using the EcoTank. The foils look pretty good. However, I cannot get the Cameo to read the registration marks on the shiny surface properly. The machine wildly miscuts the sheet. So there's a piece of the puzzle I need to modify/refine. *** Silhouette Studio I use this setting for my 48# Koala sheet with 3MIL laminate. Send (upper tab) > Standard (sub-tab) > Cut Settings... > Create a new "tool action" Force: 28 (26 for 42# Koala) Speed: 20 Passes: 6 Accel: 1 Blade Depth: 7 *** EcoTank 2800-series Tips: An incredible machine for the money. A full replacement of OEM inks (B/Y/M/C) is upwards of $70 as of this post, which I think is quite fair. You'll need to tweak the printer settings + color management + literal paper choices to your preferences. Vanilla printer paper looks like garbage. Photo paper looks amazing. My machine refuses to print a single page of 66# Koala, despite it being capable of doing so. I'm very happy with Koala 42# double-sided glossy and 48# double-sided semi-gloss coming out of my ET-2803. Feel free to further refine the settings I list below. They work really well with my specific setup. Install the latest drivers. Go to PC Settings > Printers and Scanners > *your Epson printer* > > Printing Preferences > Main (tab) Orientation = Landscape as new default Paper Type = Premium Photo Paper Semi-Gloss (with either 42# or 48# Koala) Quality = High PC Settings > Printers and Scanners > *your Epson printer* > Printing Preferences > More Options (tab) Image Options > Emphasize Text = Emphasize Bi-Directional Printing = Off Color Correction = Custom. > Advanced (tab)... Color Management = Color Controls. Adobe RGB = Gamma 2.2. Color Adjust Method = Slide Bar. Brightness 0 Contrast 0 Saturation 0 Cyan -5 Magenta -12 Yellow -12. *** Overall Procedure: Obtain card images. Alan-Cha script to generate a printable .pdf sheet for Cameo machine. Print using EcoTank. Set aside for 20+ minutes to dry. Some people recommend overnight drying. Once dry, laminate printed sheet in 3MIL pouch. Lay laminated sheet underneath a flat + heavy object to prevent curling. Setup sheet on cutting mat for Cameo. Prep sheet into Cameo machine. Load 4x2 cutting sheet file in Silhouette Studio. "Send" using auto-register. Auto-blade does the cutting. Peel cards off cutting sheet. Run the cut cards through the laminating machine again. No additional pouch is necessary. Warning About Proxxied: I learned the hard way that Proxxied produces an inaccurate 4x2 grid. Cards were being miscut by the Cameo due to incorrect sizing/spacing. I accounted for bleed and other settings on Proxxied. No idea why it was happening. Had to throw out several printed + laminated sheets. Stick with Alan-Cha's script. Map of Baltimore's neighborhoods and city council distracts
(*districts) I've been working on a map of Baltimore's 279 named neighborhoods for a while. There are others: the city publishes its own map, and there was a really nice one from the Lost Borough that was discussed here a while ago, but none of these gave me what I wanted, which is a visually appealing reference map that I can hang on my wall and use to locate and identify neighborhoods and also council districts. I plan to print this at 2' x 3' and would be grateful if anyone were willing to share feedback before I do so. I will make this available at some point in the near future. Features: * Uses official city data (Baltimore is excellent on this) * Design focus on easily-readable neighborhood names * Overlay of the city council districts with council member names * Reverse neighborhood lookup by lat/lon * Cycling lanes! (there aren't enough) The background is white to facilitate printing on ivory or off-white paper. Update 2026-04-22: I produced an updated (v10) version of the poster, incorporating many of the comments here. You can download it from this link. It looks nice framed! Summarizing the changes. - Fixed the non-square mile grid markers (thanks, /u/Yellohsub) - Reduced the size and weight of the neighborhood labels (thanks, /u/kzanomics), increased the weight of the neighborhood boundaries - Added some transparency to the title, and moved the subtitle down for balance - Extended the roads outside the city boundaries, and mirrored the top neighborhoods for some design texture - Eliminated the cycling lanes (it was a hard choice, but I think it was too much information to pack in, and outside the intended scope) - Pulled the councilperson info to the side and simplified the legend I made this for myself, so don't really care about making money off it. I hereby release it under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, meaning you are free to print a copy for personal use, but are not allowed to modify or sell it. With respect to printing: I tried a local printer in the Hampden area, who was not able to match the colors. Playing box for kids (first Arduino project)
My first Arduino project is a kids toy. Some time ago, my kids got a toy box with various switches and lights that intrigued me. I wanted to do something similar and expand on the functions. I got interested in electronics and after some tinkering with "normal" circuits, I got an Arduino Uno starter set and made a plan for the toy. Fast forward three months and it's finished. My box has these functions: Some simple LEDs with different switches and buttons 12 LEDs in a circle connected to a potentiometer. Turning the pot will light up the LEDs one after the other, at varying speed. RGB LED with three different modes (smooth color cycle, blinking color cycle, disco mode) OLED display with a key switch showing different images each time the key is turned An LED that is turned on by touching two connectors with your hands, letting the current flow through you. DC power plug that can be connected to one of three female plugs, each activating a different function: #1: Moving light: 16 LEDs on a row, one of which is activated at a time. A gyroscope reads the tilt of the box. By tilting it left or right, the light is “moved” into this direction. #2 Dancing unicorn: When activated via a switch, a servo (with a dancing unicorn glued to the arm) will turn in random angles #3 Touch sensor activating an LED I first made breadboard prototypes of each function separately. Then I assembled everything in a wooden box that I bought. My woodwork is quite rough - I only have knives, grinding paper and a power drill. It did the job, just not with straight edges ;) The dome was 3D-printed by a friend. The assembly process turned out to be a great challenge for me as I've never build something so complex before. I tried to glue as little as possible, and that turned out to be a good idea because I had to re-position pieces quite a few times. The kids where more excited about the box when I was building it than when it was finished :p But they actually use it and that gives me the most joy. To anyone who's interested I added the code and a link to the full-res schematics at the bottom. I'm happy to hear about any suggestions and tips on what I could have done better. What I learned in this project: - I did a lot of soldering and crimping and got much better/quicker in both. - some uses for capacitors, something that I didn't really get before from the books - I made my first wiring schematic (Fritzing). - Working with shift registers and various modules and sensors (WS2812 LED strip, TTP223 touch sensor, RGB module, SSD1160 OLED screen, TP4056 battery module, boost converter, MPU-6050 gyroscope). - Building a Darlington transistor circuit. - Powering a project with a lithium ion battery and a boost converter - Cables take up more space than I thought. I used 24 AWG / 0,2 mm² stranded cables in the whole project because that's what I had. The box is very, very full now. Hi everyone! I finally had a moment to share the proxy-making process I've cobbled together across the past few weeks. I'm new to making my own proxies but quickly ironed out a procedure worth sharing. Within sleeves the proxies are indistinguishable. The 48# is like an old-school foil, which was ever so sturdier than an average card. Shuffles great. The 42# feels a tiny bit slimmer than a real card. It’s important to recognize recent genuine cards sometimes feel like they’re made from cheaper and thinner materials. Off the top of my head I have a genuine mystical archives (strixhaven) card that feels identical to 42# Koala with laminate. Both 42 and 48 pass the “find the proxy mixed within the real cards” test when sleeved. Cameo 5 Cutting Machine. I made mistakes along the way. Google and YouTube for Python very helpful. Card images come from MPCFill, Discord, and CardConjurer (local). I'll occasionally make my own custom proxies. *** Silhouette Cameo 5 Tips: Alan-Cha's script is amazing. I really don't know how it's created but a tremendous thank you and job well done. The script comes with some trial and error. I experienced some hiccups. Below is what I keep in a plain .txt file with my proxy card images (you'll need to punch this into Powershell each time you want to make new .pdf printouts for Silhouette Studio): python --version python -m pip install --upgrade pip cd **file pathway for "silhouette-card-maker-main"** python -m venv venv Set-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Scope Process .\venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1 pip install -r requirements.txt ***create the actual document by copy and pasting the literal images to GAME_FRONT folder python create_pdf.py --only_fronts --ppi 900 --crop 1.5mm --quality 100 --card_size standard" --I failed at making DFC from the provided instruction by Alan-Cha. It was easier to make two separate .pdf "front" files and turn over a fully printed sheet. You need to follow the physical location of the cards for the DFC to match properly. Alan-Cha's automated process did not work for me; it created mismatched fronts and backs. --The script makes a 4x2 grid of cards. There are ways to "skip" specific cards to leave the space blank. Moving forward I am heavily considering leaving the lower left corner completely blank (7 cards per sheet). You will not need to fuss around with the corner of lower left card being too close to the lower left registration mark. --1 out of 15 sheets will be slightly miscut. I think that's my fault/user error. It sucks when it happens because then you need to print + lam + cut again. --I can successfully print on foil sticker paper using the EcoTank. The foils look pretty good. However, I cannot get the Cameo to read the registration marks on the shiny surface properly. The machine wildly miscuts the sheet. So there's a piece of the puzzle I need to modify/refine. *** Silhouette Studio I use this setting for my 48# Koala sheet with 3MIL laminate. Send (upper tab) > Standard (sub-tab) > Cut Settings... > Create a new "tool action" Force: 28 (26 for 42# Koala) Speed: 20 Passes: 6 Accel: 1 Blade Depth: 7 *** EcoTank 2800-series Tips: An incredible machine for the money. A full replacement of OEM inks (B/Y/M/C) is upwards of $70 as of this post, which I think is quite fair. You'll need to tweak the printer settings + color management + literal paper choices to your preferences. Vanilla printer paper looks like garbage. Photo paper looks amazing. My machine refuses to print a single page of 66# Koala, despite it being capable of doing so. I'm very happy with Koala 42# double-sided glossy and 48# double-sided semi-gloss coming out of my ET-2803. Feel free to further refine the settings I list below. They work really well with my specific setup. Install the latest drivers. Go to PC Settings > Printers and Scanners > *your Epson printer* > > Printing Preferences > Main (tab) Orientation = Landscape as new default Paper Type = Premium Photo Paper Semi-Gloss (with either 42# or 48# Koala) Quality = High PC Settings > Printers and Scanners > *your Epson printer* > Printing Preferences > More Options (tab) Image Options > Emphasize Text = Emphasize Bi-Directional Printing = Off Color Correction = Custom. > Advanced (tab)... Color Management = Color Controls. Adobe RGB = Gamma 2.2. Color Adjust Method = Slide Bar. Brightness 0 Contrast 0 Saturation 0 Cyan -5 Magenta -12 Yellow -12. *** Overall Procedure: Obtain card images. Alan-Cha script to generate a printable .pdf sheet for Cameo machine. Print using EcoTank. Set aside for 20+ minutes to dry. Some people recommend overnight drying. Once dry, laminate printed sheet in 3MIL pouch. Lay laminated sheet underneath a flat + heavy object to prevent curling. Setup sheet on cutting mat for Cameo. Prep sheet into Cameo machine. Load 4x2 cutting sheet file in Silhouette Studio. "Send" using auto-register. Auto-blade does the cutting. Peel cards off cutting sheet. Run the cut cards through the laminating machine again. No additional pouch is necessary. Warning About Proxxied: I learned the hard way that Proxxied produces an inaccurate 4x2 grid. Cards were being miscut by the Cameo due to incorrect sizing/spacing. I accounted for bleed and other settings on Proxxied. No idea why it was happening. Had to throw out several printed + laminated sheets. Stick with Alan-Cha's script. Map of Baltimore's neighborhoods and city council distracts
(*districts) I've been working on a map of Baltimore's 279 named neighborhoods for a while. There are others: the city publishes its own map, and there was a really nice one from the Lost Borough that was discussed here a while ago, but none of these gave me what I wanted, which is a visually appealing reference map that I can hang on my wall and use to locate and identify neighborhoods and also council districts. I plan to print this at 2' x 3' and would be grateful if anyone were willing to share feedback before I do so. I will make this available at some point in the near future. Features: * Uses official city data (Baltimore is excellent on this) * Design focus on easily-readable neighborhood names * Overlay of the city council districts with council member names * Reverse neighborhood lookup by lat/lon * Cycling lanes! (there aren't enough) The background is white to facilitate printing on ivory or off-white paper. Update 2026-04-22: I produced an updated (v10) version of the poster, incorporating many of the comments here. You can download it from this link. It looks nice framed! Summarizing the changes. - Fixed the non-square mile grid markers (thanks, /u/Yellohsub) - Reduced the size and weight of the neighborhood labels (thanks, /u/kzanomics), increased the weight of the neighborhood boundaries - Added some transparency to the title, and moved the subtitle down for balance - Extended the roads outside the city boundaries, and mirrored the top neighborhoods for some design texture - Eliminated the cycling lanes (it was a hard choice, but I think it was too much information to pack in, and outside the intended scope) - Pulled the councilperson info to the side and simplified the legend I made this for myself, so don't really care about making money off it. I hereby release it under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, meaning you are free to print a copy for personal use, but are not allowed to modify or sell it. With respect to printing: I tried a local printer in the Hampden area, who was not able to match the colors. Hey y'all! Maybe you remember me from my posts (1,2) from a few months ago, where I thought about making a SPOP-themed proxy deck for Magic The Gathering. And I'm done! For those not versed in MTG: I made a deck for the mode Commander. All these cards exist irl under the name written in smaller font under the cardname (or on the bottom of the card. If there is no such writing, then the name on top is the actual name). I made only minor adjustments (g.e. Horde Prime has the creature type Primus and the tokens he creates are Clones), but these should not be relevant for the actual gameplay (if you are playing with friends, then they won't mind anyway. If they do, look for new friends.) For those versed in MTG: I am well aware that the colors and creature types don't make sense in every case, but I had to decide on a commander and then follow the deckbuilding rules while shoehorning as many characters as possible in. Adora still appears like three times but i don't have a Lilianne scenario. For all: You can take a look at all the cards here. Feel free to use the PDF in case you want to print it yourself. I used 300g/sqm paper and a laser printer in a copyshop, costed me around 25€. I did my best to track the original artists of the artworks, but thanks to reposting without credit or missing watermark, it was impossible in most cases (in case you know the artists, let me know and i'll edit the cards at some point). I still used a lot of screenshots. Yes, I am aware of the spelling mistake on Huntara's card, but I couldn't be bothered enough to change that right now. DJ Provai Jumpsuit Tutorial
What's the craic, fellow fenian scum? At least one person was interested in a detailed post about how I made my DJ Provai jumpsuit featured here. So, this one's for you, u/PresidentSadboi. The pictures correspond to different steps throughout the process, so start by reading the text, and then if you see "(Pic #)" go check out the corresponding picture attached. First things first, I secured a jumpsuit. Ebay has many cheap options for less than $40. Then, I secured an Irish flag patch (Pic 1). I bought one like this one from Carrolls Irish Gifts while in Ireland, but I’m sure you can find them online elsewhere for pretty cheap. Then, I painted some Celtic braids / knots along the sleeves & pantlegs (Pic 1) Materials needed (Pic 2): Freezer paper printer X-acto knife Surface for cutting out the stencil (I used a clipboard and manilla folder) Iron Ironing board Tea towel Acrylic paint (I used Arteza brand, which I just happened to have on hand) Paint brush; palette and water cup are optional & I recommend having paper towel within reach Process: Find some free Celtic knot patterns that would work as a braid down the pantlegs / sleeves of the jumpsuit. (Pic 3) I simply googled, “printable celtic knot patterns free” or something like that Tip: Simpler design = easier stencil to cut out Look at (Pic 3) for the design I used for the pantlegs Print out the design onto freezer paper or transfer the design to freezer paper (Pic 4) Why freezer paper? You can iron it onto a piece of fabric, paint the design that’s been cut out of the paper, and then peel off the paper once the design has been painted. Tip: if you want to make a long braid, print out multiple copies of the same image to use as a stencil. You cannot reuse a stencil once it’s been ironed onto the suit. Tip: the shiny side of the paper should be face down on the fabric once you’re ready to iron. What I did was I printed my stencils directly onto freezer paper, which was quite frustrating given the nature of printers. If you print directly onto the freezer paper, be aware that the ink may transfer from the paper onto the fabric, so opt for designs that use less ink and print the design on the matte side of the freezer paper. You could also print a design onto regular printer paper and then lay the freezer paper over the printer paper and cut out the stencil by eyeballing the pattern through the freezer paper. Using an X-acto knife and a piece of scrap cardboard to cut on, cut out the stencil you want painted onto your jumpsuit. (Pic 5) Tip: leave negative space between the areas that are cut out so that all the cut out parts of the design are still connected to the paper stencil. If you accidentally sever all attachments to the space outside the stencil, then the inner part of the design will lose its detail. For example, I printed Moglai’s 3CAG tattoo with the hopes of using it as a stencil. The letter C has been cut out. If I simply had cut along the perimeter of the letter, the interior detail of the C would have been lost. Because I left the interior connected to the outside, (look at the bottom where a small sliver of paper connects the inner C lines with the rest of the paper on the outside of the letter) the letter C looks like a proper gothic letter, rather than a backwards capital D. Iron the stencil onto the jumpsuit. Make sure all the edges of the stencil are properly stuck to the fabric. If any are lifted, go over that area again with the iron until everything is properly laid on the fabric with no bubbles or gaps (Pics 6 & 7). Tip: I laid a tea towel over my stencil to prevent the iron from burning the fabric. However, this meant I had to increase the amount of ironing I did to make the stencil stuck to the fabric. Paint the design onto the fabric using the ironed on stencil (Pic 8). Tip: I didn’t remove my jumpsuit from the ironing board before painting the logo onto the back of my jumpsuit, which then bled onto the ironing board. Please learn from my mistake and remember to insert a protective surface between the fabric you’re painting on and whatever is underneath it. Tip: Just before the paint is fully dry, carefully peel off the paper stencil from the fabric and dispose of it. For the back of the jumpsuit, I painted directly onto the fabric and I made some patches and sewed them onto the jumpsuit Making Patches Materials Needed (Pic 9): Old fabric to use as a patch Old tea towel or paper towel to quickly wipe out mistakes Acrylic paint (I used Arteza brand, which I just happened to have on hand) Paint brush; palette and water cup are optional & I recommend having paper towel within reach Needle and thread Scissors Lettering stencils (I used this pack) Process: I was initially going to use a freezer paper stencil for the lettering, but I changed my mind because the seam that runs vertically through the middle of the back was challenging to work around with the freezer paper stencil. I wouldn’t have been able to iron on the “phalaistin” stencil because of the bunching at the bottom (Pic 10). I started the back by painting the logo using a freezer paper stencil that I ironed on (Pic 11). Then, I made patches that said “Saoirse don Phalaistin” to then handsew onto the back of my jumpsuit. I used the plastic stencil to paint each letter onto the black fabric. Once dried, I cut out a patch for each word (Pic 12). Because of the back seam, it was important to see how the design would look while being worn. I positioned them using safety pins around the logo to determine the best spot to sew the patches (Pic 13-15). Then, I sewed each patch onto the jumpsuit (Pic 16). Finally, DJ Provai’s look isn’t complete without his balaclava. I made my own, but also purchased from Kneecap’s website and from the person who made DJ Provai’s iconic balaclavas (found on this etsy listing)! To make my own, I purchased this trio of white ski masks and dyed one. First, I tried dyeing them with powdered tie dye, which did not work well at all. So, I used Rit Dye for synthetic fabric and that was better. I bought this and this. Unfortunately, I don’t have any process pictures for this. However, I did include a picture of my completed balaclava to show how the Rit Dye came out (Pic 17). And that's it! Sorry for the long post, but when I was making the suit, I couldn't find any tutorials and would have loved something like this, so hopefully, this helps someone else in the future! Tried making my own Pokémon cards, here’s my process and results!
Hey everyone! I wanted to share my experience so far with this hobby. I’m still a beginner, so I apologize if I’ve made any big mistakes (which I’ll gladly fix if pointed out!), and if some of my assembly results make you cringe — sorry in advance! 😅 🖼️ About the artwork I usually find art on sites like Pinterest, Pixiv, and DeviantArt, and I always credit the artists both on the card and here in the post. In a few cases, I couldn’t track down the original artist — so if you recognize any of the artworks, please let me know! I’ve also started considering commissioning a few pieces directly from artists in the future. NOTE: I've written in the images each card's respective printing method, Charizard is currently just the artwork not a card yet. Carracosta, Koraidon and Radiant Hawlucha are official cards there for comparison. 🖨️ Printing method Right now, I’m using the vinyl sticker + white paint method (though on some cards I skip the white paint step). Since I don’t own a printer yet, I rely on local print shops, and all of them use either UV or laser printing — you can see the differences in the uploaded images. Interestingly, despite what I first thought, laser printing gives noticeably better color and overall quality than UV printing. So far, the cards I’m happiest with (the ones going into my PC) are all laser printed. (I’m planning to buy my own printer soon — probably the Epson Ecotank ET-2870*. If anyone has experience with it, I’d love to know if it’s a good option!)* ✨ Tests and experiments For testing purposes, instead of stripping cards with acetone, I’ve been experimenting by applying non-transparent holo sticker paper over basic cards. Starting Proxies: Paper, Laminate, and Sticker Tests
I’ve been making proxies for fun (mostly for my kid who’s into Pokemon, Lorcana) and went down a bit of a rabbit hole. Thought I’d share my process and results so you don’t have to experiment as much. More videos here I don’t plan to sleeve the cards, and I’ve found that matte laminate has a nicer feel in the hand with extra protection. I tried the vinyl sticker + laminate method, but I didn’t like how the cards felt when bending or flicking, they bent too easily and didn’t return to shape. I print directly on Koala Matte White Card Stock and only laminate the back using Matte Laminating sheet (Gloss make the card curve up much more). Koala Matte White Card Stock – 230gsm (50 sheets) Price: $13.99 (~$0.037 per card) Thickness: 0.35mm ✅ No sticker, good thickness, and the snap is much better. ❌ Perfect if you sleeve it, but may bend if you don’t flatten it after laminating. It gives more vibrant colors. (Going to try 300gsm heavyweight black backing next) Canon Matte Photo paper is the cheapest decent option, but I personally prefer Koala Matte White Card stock since it also cuts clean and has a thickness similar to One Piece cards. Update: Print directly on Koala Matte White Card Stock (4) + laminating only the back is also comparable to vinyl stickers. Canon Matte Photo + Laminate (33mm) is the most affordable option, but if you want vibrant colors, I would go for #6 or #8, though they offer almost no protection without sleeve. Overall, my picks would be #1, #8, #4, and #6. I’ll continue testing #6 (Vinyl sticker) with heavier weight paper. #1. Love the thickness at 33 mm and the protection; the snap feels decent. #8. Thickness at 0.35 mm. Love the vibrant colors, but it has no protection. #4. Thickness at 0.42 mm. Same as #1, but much thicker. #6. Thickness at 0.39 mm.
