My dining area is next to the kitchen. Behind the shutters is a patio (door is on the left side), which I use every day. That freezer can be moved somewhere else. I don’t have chandelier, just LED lights so the table can moved freely. Currently I have this rectangular table, but I’m not sure is I like it that much. What do you guys think? A round table would be looking better in this place? Last picture shows what round table I’m looking at it. Needed a round dining table to replace a beat up hand-me-down. IMO, the base is the weakest feature of the table. At least in pictures, the splayed tapered legs are not prominent enough to show. Base is rift-sawn red oak. So, I recently had my kitchen redone and got a bench seat built in with plans to buy a dining table for it. I know the shape of a bench seat might fit a rectangular table best, but my TV unit and sofa are both very rectangular (as well as the bench seat itself) so I wanted to create some contrast with a round table. This particular table came in two options - a 90x90cm tabletop or a 120x120cm tabletop. I went for the bigger one because the smaller table looked too small for the bench seat on my scale floor-plan…. now I’m wondering whether I made the wrong choice? The table feels quite dominant in the space and it is slightly covering my designer radiator, even when placed very close to the bench! The major complicating factor is that the table arrived at the beginning of February but I was unable to move the box myself, so I haven’t been able to get the table out until now - that means the 14 day return period is already up which I know was stupid of me! If I get some nice dining chairs and a centrepiece to break up the big black circle, do you think I can make it work? There’s also some storage boxes next to my TV unit which might be crowding the area a bit and making the table feel bigger. Let me know what you think because I can’t tell whether this is salvageable at the moment! TL;DR: I bought a 120cm diameter dining table because it looked like it was a good fit on my scale floor-plan. I hadn’t been able to open it until after the return period was up, but now that it’s in I think it might be too big. I randomly walked into a furniture store today just to browse and somehow got completely stuck on this dining table. I really like the surface. It looks like travertine or natural stone, but it’s actually sintered stone, so supposedly way easier to live with and less maintenance. The texture felt soft and natural in person, not cold or overly polished. My boyfriend prefers a classic rectangular table because we host friends pretty often and he thinks it’s more practical, while I’m really drawn to this round shape and how relaxed it feels. Now I’m second-guessing myself a bit. For those who have stone or sintered stone tables, do they show water marks or stains easily? And if you entertain a lot, would you still go with round over rectangular? Hello everyone! I need some advice on how to restore this dining table that we inherited. It’s a danish-made table from around the 60’s-70’s, and I’m pretty sure it’s teak, but I could be wrong. It’s definitely veneer, 2-3mm thick on the main table and very thin on the leaves (0,5 mm or less) Now due to this being inherited from my partner’s grandmother, and thus having sentimental value, I’d like to give it the best possible treatment - I don’t want to make it “new” again, but it does need some love. - The first thing I need help with is figuring out what finishing it already has, I can’t tell whether is is varnished or just oiled? The problem is that right now the wood feels incredibly dry?? I don’t know how else to explain it, but it feels brittle and it’s *very* easy to scratch, I think I could simply scratch with my fingernail, and it would make little marks where the wood looks lighter. Picture 6 shows a scratch made by moving a cardboard karton (it wasn’t sharp or anything) - Another thing is that around the edges of the round table-ends, there’s a lot of dirt (?)/ dark discoloration (pic 4). I suspect this is 50+ years of grease and oils from people’s arms… and every time I wipe the table down with a damp cloth, it comes away grey. This is kinda gross, so I tried rubbing a bit more (still just with a damp kitchen cloth, no soap), but now there’s a light-colored matte spot (pic 5) - did I rub off the finishing? I didn’t rub very hard, is it really so easy to remove, or had the finishing been degraded from decades of literal “elbow grease”? - The water-ring in picture 7 is recent - does this mean it’s not varnished? (It’s on one of the leaves) - Is there a way to fix the damage in the last two pictures? - The leaves are also a very different color from the main table-top, are they stained? The color seems almost unnaturally red (it’s difficult to capture on camera). Is there a way to even out the color, or is it due to the main table having had mor uv exposure? So to summarize: - I need to figure out what type of finish the table has, find a way to strip it off and clean the ends of the table - Then I need to find out which way I should refinish it - oil or varnish?
