What is Vinyl?

Vinyl is a type of synthetic material made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that is commonly used in the production of records, also known as vinyl records or simply vinyl. These records have grooves that contain audio information, which is read by a turntable needle to produce sound.

Is Vinyl trending?

Yes. Vinyl growing with a month-over-month change of 1.25% over the past 5 years, with approximately 246,000 monthly searches.

This is a seasonal trend that peaks every December. The seasonal demand is forecasted to grow over the next year.

Why is Vinyl trending?

1
Superior Sound Quality
Vinyl records are known for their warm and rich sound quality. Many audiophiles prefer the analog sound produced by vinyl records over digital formats, as vinyl can capture nuances and details that may be lost in digital recordings.
2
Physical Interaction
Listening to vinyl records involves a physical interaction with the music. The act of carefully handling the record, placing it on the turntable, and gently lowering the needle creates a unique and immersive experience that cannot be replicated with digital music.
3
Collectibility and Nostalgia
Vinyl records have a nostalgic appeal and are often seen as collector's items. Many people enjoy the process of building a vinyl collection, searching for rare or limited edition releases, and displaying their records as a form of personal expression.
4
Artwork and Packaging
Vinyl records often feature larger artwork and elaborate packaging compared to digital formats. The album covers and inserts provide a visual component to the music, enhancing the overall listening experience and allowing for a deeper connection with the artist's vision.
5
Resurgence of Vinyl Culture
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in vinyl records, particularly among younger generations. This resurgence has led to the establishment of independent record stores, vinyl-focused events, and a renewed appreciation for the tangible and tactile nature of vinyl.

This may completely miss the point of vinyl, but I built it anyway
I’ve been building this object for myself over the past few months. I own a lot of records, but I found myself spending more time browsing Spotify than actually listening to music. I also missed having album artwork visible in the room instead of being shown on a small phone screen. The idea is simple: place a record on the stand and the album starts playing on Spotify. Remove it and playback stops. (It’s basically NFC tags, WiFi and Spotify. Each record sleeve contains a tag linked to an album. The stand reads the tag and tells Spotify what to play.) I realize this may be mildly offensive to vinyl enthusiasts. The whole project started as an attempt to reduce technology until it almost disappears. No screens, no menus, no apps once it’s set up. Just a physical object and a record. Part of the appeal is practical. Anyone in the family can start or stop the music without touching my stereo, finding the right input, or setting the correct streaming device in Spotify. Still prototyping different designs, but curious what the vinyl crowd thinks: completely missing the point, or does the physical interaction make some sense? submitted by /u/Known_Window_1901 to r/vinyl [link] [comments]

Vinyl doesn’t sound better - but your brain treats it differently:
Most vinyl vs digital discussions focus on fidelity. Digital clearly wins there: lower noise, lower distortion, perfect repeatability. But I’ve been wondering if the difference some people feel isn’t accuracy, it's attention. The brain is predictive. When a stimulus repeats identically, the brain models it and gradually allocates less processing to it. It becomes familiar and drifts toward background perception. Think ringtones, door bells and microwaves) Digital playback is sample-identical every time, so over repeated listens the signal becomes fully predicted. Vinyl playback isn’t identical between plays. There are tiny variations like speed drift, tracing behavior, noise modulation and it's usually below conscious awareness, but enough that the waveform is never perfectly the same twice. So instead of changing fidelity, it may change how the brain treats the sound: Digital: Quickly categorized as a known recording. Vinyl: Remains an ongoing sensory event. Not a “better sound”, just sustained perceptual engagement automatically leading to deeper information processing by the brain. The track keeps pulling attention. Curious whether others notice this because I feel it - decent vinyl setup needed - not high end. I can listen way longer via vinyl and it doesn't bore the crap out me. (Yes the process of vinyl also captured attention and makes for more attentive listening, but I'm trying to keep that out) submitted by /u/evil_twit to r/audiophile [link] [comments]

Larian replaced my melted Baldur’s Gate 3 vinyl <3 mi
A little while ago I posted here heartbroken because my Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Vinyl (a birthday gift from my wife) got warped by sunlight after stupid me leaving record in the player. I mostly just wanted to warn other collectors, but amazing Larian team surprised me by reaching out! Today, the replacement arrived not only the vinyl set, but also three beautiful pins as a bonus!!!.(edit-not bard "Harpers Pin" submitted by

My Baldur’s Gate 3 vinyl is gone 💔
I’m honestly heartbroken right now. This Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Vinyl was a birthday gift from my wife, and I just discovered it melted after being left where the sun hit it directly. The curtain was mostly closed, but I’m pretty sure my cats managed to open it and that’s how it got exposed.🥲 Sharing this as a warning to fellow collectors: please make sure to store your records safely away from sunlight and heat. I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through this. It hurts even more since this edition is pretty much impossible to find now. Maybe (hopefully) the company might see this and help me out somehowbut even if not, I just wanted to spread the word so others can protect their vinyls. RIP to my favorite gift💔 submitted by /u/Naoness to r/BaldursGate3 [link] [comments]

My vinyl collection
I started collecting vinyl in 2006 and here is what my collection looks like now. I could not find storage solution for both 7" and 12" so i designed this cabinet years ago to store all together. When you start collecting vinyl, you cannot stop 😅 before this cabinet my vinyl collection was in different room and at some point that room become so small for vinyl collection so i moved all to another room. I hope i will not have to move out from this home since it is so hard to carry all stuff 😃 submitted by /u/NoPepper3820 to r/vinyl [link] [comments]

Aren't most vinyl, especially newer, technically digital?
I have a friend who is in to vinyl and is convinced it sounds better because vinyl are "analog", not digital (ones and zeros aka binary). As they claim the grooves in the vinyl are the actual soundwaves recorded. But.. If the source was recorded digitally as almost everything is, then said track was made in vinyl, then the vinyl is technically digital too right? In other words if you copy a source of one's and zeros you will still be ones and zeros, it won't magically become analog. submitted by /u/gymleader-misty to r/vinyl [link] [comments]

Is vinyl worth it?
Hopefully this discussion is okay in this sub. I've been getting intrigued by vinyl since I learned about Discogs a few weeks ago. It was a blast looking up some of my favorite artists and seeing some original pressings from the 70s and 80s. I was born in 1976, so I had some vinyl back in the day, but I mostly had tapes in the 80s to mid-90s. Then I got into CDs, and I still have most of my collection of about 350 discs (I threw the crystal cases away and only have the discs and booklets now). Now I use Spotify almost exclusively for my music consumption since I listen at home, work, and in the car/truck. My older son will be graduating college in a couple months. Even though he went away for school, we still kept his bedroom intact for when he came home for break, but him completely moving away from home is on the horizon. When he does, the plan is to turn his room into an office for my side-business and general use. When I get the office set up, is it worth getting a record player and starting a vinyl collection, or should I just keep streaming through Spotify? I have some decent speakers for my computer, so the sound is pretty good. (I'm not an audiophile.) Is nostalgia a big reason why people are into vinyl? Is the "experience" that much better? I would mostly be playing music while I'm working or goofing around on my computer. Thanks. ETA: If it matters, I listen to mostly hard rock and metal; mostly traditional metal, some metalcore, some melodic death metal. submitted by /u/red-wingnut to r/LetsTalkMusic [link] [comments]
