Okay now that title sounds terrible, right? But hear me out..... I live near a handful of apartment complexes thats right off a fairly busy street, like you open my door and the road is right there. It's also a low income housing area so people are constantly moving in and out. A few months ago before winter started, a new cat started coming around. He was clearly a young kitten and newly adopted. We have a water bowl on our porch for the critters who come by, and he'd always come over and go straight for the water. He'd come over frequently throughout the winter when it was below 20°f and snowing just trembling on our porch looking inside. I made him a heat box with a low temp heating pad, insulated foam, and straw. I asked on a local page to try and find an owner as he just keeps coming back and our three cats go crazy seeing him! The owners reached out to say he is an outdoor only cat and basically told me to mind my business. This cat comes by every day and drinks water like he has never been given any before, for a solid 10 minutes before he lays down and always goes back for the water before he leaves. He is so small. He loves being loved on and pet but you can feel all of his ribs. He has long fur that is filthy and matted, especially between his toes. He's also unneutered, and I can only assume unvaccinated from that too. He sprays everything that possibly smells like our cats which isn't his fault but still. He'll also just walk into our house when the door is open like it's his own until he gets chased out by one of our cats. I'm thinking of keeping this cat or finding someone who can take him in. I've offered to pay for his neuter but the owners said no. Would it be wrong of me to catnap him? To me, a cat with no collar and unneutered on the street is a stray.... and he clearly isn't getting his needs met at home. I have been working out for a few weeks using the walking pad, usually early afternoon or the evening i have a weird schedule from classes, and my work schedule. Last night I couldn’t use it till 10 pm and my down stairs neighbor slammed on their ceiling for a good thirty seconds. Understandably, I stopped and switched to a low impact work out. Today, I started at 5:30 pm when I got home (I also wanted my bf to be home incase of conflict), I am not going to do it at night anymore but they slammed on their ceiling again. I feel like it shouldn’t be an issue during daylight, although i know it could be annoying. I especially will watch the times i’m doing it since she has kids like early morning/night but I am only usually on it for 20-40 tops minutes at 3.3 mph during the day. I really don’t want to quit I get anxiety walking outside and I cant always get myself to do it. I am going to get a yoga mat to try and reduce the impact. Their kids also are always running through the building slamming doors and leaving things in the hallway that make it hard to open doors sometimes and they always park terribly in spots closest to the building that aren’t even spots that block other real parking spots but it’s frivolous it doesn’t even bother me (the parking does occasionally bother me) but its not a big deal. I just want to work out a solution but before I proceed I want to know if I am being an asshole for using it during the day time. UPDATE: I bought shock absorption pads 1/2 inch thick and a mat, i will be talking to them to see if i can find a good time of day for them TLDR; my downstairs neighbor slammed their ceiling telling me to stop using the walking pad around 10pm, super understandable so now I will only do it during the daytime unless that makes me an asshole i’m submitted by /u/ritzrosiee to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Hey guys, So I wanted to share my experience with getting from barely 3 - 4k steps to 10k steps per day, as consistently as possible I really enjoy walking, since forever. I have been taking walks, since my high school days, and in my undergrad it became all the more easier to reach 7 - 8k steps, since I studied in a large university But since my first job, I was not able to reach even 6k steps. I work a desk job, and it was tough to incorporate 10k steps with all the other major life changes that come with the first job. WFH added to this, since the steps that I was doing while working from office went POOF. I was able to make up for it by visiting my local park after work. That way I could a little bit of jogging & get that 8k steps within an hour But then I moved countries, and I found myself in a completely new environment. The place was really pedestrian friendly & walkable, making a consistent routine proved to be tough & I found myself going back 3 - 4k avg steps per day Then I bought a walking pad I already had a standing desk when I was setting my home office in the new place. While going through reddit, one day I had an idea of throwing a walking pad under it, to get my steps. I first tried having the walking pad in the living room so I can watch TV & walk, but that didn't work out for me. Then after several things, I decided to throw it under my office desk & it was a game changer Previousy, as I showed, it was impossible for me to hit the 10k steps a day without making the extra effort to get the steps in. But this thing enabled me like nothing else Now I don't only reach 10k steps, I have been on a streak in my Pacer app. Ofcourse there are still days on which I do not have the motivation to get up & walk (mostly 2 days per week, since that is what pacer Allows without breaking the streak) but overall its been really helpful in getting me up & walking and hitting the 10k step mark, consistently Now, a word of caution. As I have carpeting in my room, I was initially walking barefoot on the walking pad. It was a bit uncomfortable in the beginning, but I was trying to remove barriers to get up & walking. But unfortunately, I developed painful cracked heels which I guess were due to the same reason. So I bought a cheapish sneakers and put them next to the walking pad I have yet to experience fully what walking in shoes is like, vs barefoot. But overall I would say Im very happy with the walking pad. Its been a game changer for me & I would certainly recommend if anyone is struggling to hit 10k steps, just get a walking pad from Amazon (there are so many, some with even great deals) and they will change your life. Before buying, I was also hesitant, because I have seen people buy expensive ass treadmills & then just using them to hang their clothes. I also come from a background where people prefer convenience vs any physical activities. So the decision was a tough one, But overall I would say, Im really happy with it & I would encourage anyone who is looking to get active, pls invest in a walking pad TL;DR Working a desk job & getting to 10K steps is not easy (almost impossible). I’ve been wanting a walking pad for a few months now and have been doing my due diligence on researching and continuously reading Reddit posts. However, the more I read, I’m concluding that a walking pad is just not worth buying. Reasons I’ve gathered from this sub: - walking more than a few miles (~4 miles) a day causes motor burnout - cheap walking pads (~$350 or less) have resulted in error codes, burnt out motors, leaving residue under the pad, and the pad misaligning —> having to buy another walking pad within a few months/within the same year. - the need to oil the pad/perform maintenance Note: - there are people who have cheap walking pads who don’t have any issues but it seems they aren’t the majority. After first learning about them on tiktok, I spent a long time really wanting a walking pad in my home, but I just wasn't sure if it would be worth the money. I finally bought one and I can say 100% without a doubt it is the best large purchase I made all year. Before I bought a walking pad, I only ever saw thin female influencers on tiktok using them, so I wanted to share my review here in case anyone else is like me and was worried about whether or not it would be a good fit for you. My Background In 2017, I weighed 240 lbs, my highest weight ever. I was only 22, so it really concerned me because I knew it was likely I would continue gaining if I didn't do something. Luckily I found this sub and managed to lose ~60 lbs before getting pregnant with my second child. I maintained a healthy weight throughout pregnancy, then went back down to 180 not long after giving birth. I felt amazing! I had done it, I thought I was one of the few people who would only have to lose weight one time and then would be able to maintain it for life. BUT in 2020, for reasons that are probably pretty obvious, I began gaining it back. Unfortunately the pandemic combined with a stressful job led me to gain all the way back to 230, almost up to my highest weight. In spite of wanting to lose weight since I hit 230 in 2021, I have NOT implemented regular calorie counting into my life and have struggled with a serious lack of motivation. My job led to extreme burnout and I ended up quitting in 2022. Up until July of this year, I still weighed 230 lbs. I currently weigh 215 lbs. Concerns Before Buying I weighed 230 lbs when I was looking and a lot of them have a 230 lb weight limit. I am 5'8" and a lot of them are fairly short, so I was worried about being able to walk normally on it. I did not want to invest in an expensive one and was worried about overall quality if I went with a cheaper option. Would I actually use it as much as I thought I would? Or was I just being influenced by the thin, beautiful women on tiktok who I wanted to be like? Thoughts Now That I've Owned It For 6 Months I managed to find one with a 265 lb weight capacity. Although I was still worried that I was cutting it close, it has worked just fine for me. After 6 months of use, I now weigh 215, so my weight has been somewhat consistent but hasn't caused any significant wear and tear. It easily holds me up and I haven't noticed any issues whatsoever. It's plenty long enough. My 5'11" husband with much longer legs than mine has no problem walking on it (although he doesn't ever walk for as long as I do). I do notice some tightness in my hips after awhile of using it, and I think that's because it is a tad narrow. I offset this by making sure to stop and stretch every couple of miles. The only issue I've had is the display has gotten all wonky. It's an LED display but some of the lights don't light up, so I can no longer see how far I've gone. That is annoying but not really that big of a deal in the long run. Considering the price, I'm just happy that I can still walk on it after all this time. YES! This is one purchase that I have stuck to using quite a bit. I do not have a standing desk, but I have a counter that has worked perfectly for putting this under. I keep my laptop charger there so that I am more encouraged to just walk anytime I'm on the laptop. I am a SAHM and ghostwriter, so before I was sitting down for long periods of time while writing, but this allows me to easily get several miles in every day. I usually keep it on a fairly low pace of about 2 mph so that I can just mindlessly walk on it without really thinking about it. For days when I want it to actually feel like a workout, I bump it up to about 3.5 mph and will go for an hour. I bought a desktop USB fan which is great for staying cool. One thing that I've found that makes it easier for me to get on and walk was getting a pair of house slippers that have a real sole in them, so they're comfy to walk on. I bought fairly cheap deerform ones from Walmart. As you can see, I have NOT lost a significant amount of weight since owning the walking pad (went from 230 to 215) and that is because I have been extremely inconsistent with calorie counting. Always keep in mind that it is much easier to reduce your food intake than it is to exercise away excess calories! If you are thinking that buying a walking pad will magically help you lose a ton of weight, you will only be disappointed. BUT if you are hoping that a walking pad might help you become an overall more active person and maybe offset a few extra calories here and there, then you're going to love it. Please feel free to ask whatever questions you might have. Like I said, before buying this thing I felt like I had never seen anyone in my situation who had one, so I hope to be the resource that I didn't have at the time.
