ESPN figured out how to use Danhausen before AEW did.
Danhausen is on ESPN. Let that sink in. A guy Tony Khan left sitting on his toy shelf for years just appeared on ESPN’s NBA Finals pregame show, where they’re openly discussing his “uncursing” of the New York Knicks and crediting it as part of the team’s Finals run. Meanwhile, AEW couldn’t find anything meaningful for him to do. This is the same company that constantly tells us it embraces unique characters and wrestling outside the WWE mold. Yet one of the most recognizable, merch-moving personalities on the roster became more relevant on ESPN than he ever was on Dynamite. Very nice. Very evil. And a pretty brutal reminder that ESPN figured out how to use Danhausen before Tony Khan did. submitted by /u/uncannynerddad to r/midcarder [link] [comments]

Custom Deck Boxes
Greetings! Just curious is anyone here makes/has made any ridiculous/fun deck boxes. I finished this up today. I bought it back in 2017 to hold my paint markers, (it was listed as a WWE toy) but found out it perfectly fits two 100 card single sleeved decks after making a wooden divider. So I got to work making it look realistic. After trying out various ways to keep the lids shut, I decided to drill holes in the sides and use a kabob skewer to simulate a lock bar. Not sure if this sub let's people reply with photos, but if any of you have made anything for the game, I'd love to see what you've come up with! submitted by /u/IyeetSec to r/mtg [link] [comments]

Why were kids attending wwe shows during the tv 14 eras? And why were WWE toys sill being made during that time?
And by those eras, I obviously mean the Attitude Era and the Ruthless Aggression Era. In those times we've had stuff like Beaver Cleavage, the divas and the hot stuff they did, Triple H pretending to be Kane to do you know what, Bra and Panties matches, Edge and Lita (almost) having sex on the ring on tv, Shawn Michaels getting his head violently thrown against a car's window (resulting in a bloody mess), Kurt Angle wanting to have "bestiality sex", Undertaker "murdering" the Big Boss Man, Christian and Trish Stratus having a very sexual and passionate kiss, girls apparently appearing topless in the 2002 - 2006 RAW intro, the lesbians segment with Eric Bischoff and Three Minute Warning, Torrie Wilson and Dawn Marie apparently going to have lesbian sex, Val Venis, the Girls Gone Wild thing and Dawn Marie flashing the whole audience before the GGW show, hell even people like Stone Cold and DX themselves were very adult stuff. Plus, we've had more violent matches like Eddie vs JBL Judgement Day '04, Mankind vs Undertaker KOTR '98, inferno matches, Mick Foley vs Edge WM 22, Foley vs Orton Backlash '04 (well pretty much any Foley match was a very violent one), Cena vs JBL Judgement Day '05, Angle vs Shane at KOTR '01, and many other matches that were also part of what made those times very adult. However, at some old WWE shows I've seen during those times, I've seen a few kids on the crowds. And I can understand children watching WWE in private trying to hide it from their parents, but then being in the audience didn't just mean that their parents knew, but also that they approved it and WWE themselves didn't seem to have a "no children's allowed" announcement in each show or in their tickets. Or maybe they did for a few show but not for all of them but hey, not everything that is seen on tv is previously announced, and even though a match might be announced beforehand as a no DQ match, you never know if it's going to be a bloody violent mess or not (Edge vs Cena at Unforgiven didn't have any blood, despite the match being a no DQ match in 2006). And also, during those times, WWE was also still making toys, that didn't just mean WWE knew that children were part of their audience and that didn't just mean WWE themselves were ok with that, but also that they wanted to promote the product to that very young audience as well, despite knowing very well what was seen on their shows during those times. So, where there any limits to what shows children could attend and what shows they couldn't? Or where they allowed at any show back then? Was there a previous announcement saying "this show will contain adult stuff" besides the TV-14 rating on tv? Was there any announcement of that type on the tickets or outside the arena? How were things back then? It's like if Matt and Trey knew that South Park was being watched by children and then they made toys for them (not adult collectibles, but straight up actual toys to play with). submitted by /u/2003KM to r/SquaredCircle [link] [comments]

Eminem soon to be leaving Top 50 most subscribed YouTube Channels as list gets filled more and more with brainrot and companies
Around 54% of the top 50 is companies now and around 33% of it is simply brainrot with lots of cocomelon-like channels in the list too. Only 2 channels in the entire top 50 list, would fit the original mid 2010s idea of a youtuber (PewDiePie and Mark Rober) of broadcasting yourself. With the rest ether being companies (majority 54%) or fake kids channels or cheap mrbeast copy cats or brainrot shorts creators all doing it for the money. Just take a look at the list. submitted by /u/Alone_Yam_36 to r/youtube [link] [comments]

Mike Johnson, via PWInsider: SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE - A WARNING
Someone is going to die. It is, unfortunately, just a matter of time. When I was a young kid, my family and I were visiting a now-defunct NYC event called Queens Day in Flushing Meadow Park. It was a day of carnival games and attractions - everything from dance troupes to a Medieval Times-style joust to CPR classes from The FDNY. As we were leaving for the car, my mother stopped, looked at me and said, “Isn’t he one of the wrestlers?” There, inside a carnival tent that beckoned you with a handwritten sign, was none other than what in my mind was one of Hulk Hogan’s most formidable foes, Big John Studd, signing in order to get people to come and learn about Brooklyn-Queens cable (Time Warner would later acquire them). My parents took us on the short line and we were ushered in to meet Studd, who didn’t seem Big, but Gargantuan in person. I am sure the meeting was perhaps two minutes in reality, but as a kid, it was magical and lasted forever in my brain. He kiddingly joked about my younger brother hiding his Hulk Hogan t-shirt, talked about Bobby Heenan when asked and was just the nicest guy a kid could hope to meet in running into a television star ten minutes from your home. I will always think of John Studd in high esteem, because without that meeting and his kindness, who knows how much further I would have fallen in love with professional wrestling. I have no idea if I’d be writing here or even caring about what the next Wrestlemania main event is. All I know is that in many ways, that meeting for me in 1987 was the kickoff of me loving pro wrestling so much more, because of that interaction - and somewhere in my files, I still have the autograph he signed on, of all things, a pamphlet for BQ Cable. There’s no photo, but a memory that even as I head into my 50s, I do cherish. That memory was free and thanks to my mother spotting Studd as we were heading to our car in the parking lot after a long day. It was decades ago. Today, fans line up at massive conventions like Fanfest or Comic-Con, plopping down lots of money for photos and autographs as they are quickly whisked through lines and at times, even yelled at to move along. I doubt the quality of the experience is anywhere near what my family was lucky enough to have when my siblings and I were young, but there’s a good reason for that. There isn’t a day that goes by where some WWE performer doesn’t have their life threatened in some way, and security measures have to be taken, because sooner or later, the law of averages is going to catch up and someone is going to die. I can’t even say someone is going to be hurt or traumatized, because we’ve seen enough instances in the recent past. Bret Hart and Nattie Neidhart were tackled by a fan who leaped out of the crowd in the Barclays Center and tackled them in the middle of a WWE Hall of Fame ceremony. As satisfying as it was to watch Cash Wheeler deck the attacker, that doesn’t make up for the fact that Bret Hart, a cancer and stroke survivor, was physically assaulted before thousands of fans live and many more watching on streaming devices. Seth Rollins was tackled and attacked by a fan on a live Raw in the Barclays Center (Brooklyn, what are you doing?) because some fan believed a fake Rollins online had wronged him. Sure, the fan was arrested, but to this day, I have no idea what the outcome of the case was, and neither does anyone I’ve asked. Is this fan walking around heading to The Barclays Center Summerslam weekend? Professional wrestling exists in a world that transcends and cascades back and forth between fantasy and reality and the best performers have always been the ones who made you believe or made you angry - The Terry Funks, The Roddy Pipers, the Ric Flairs - all of whom had been attacked at different points of their careers by fans. We all know the stories of Blackjack Mulligan or Ole Anderson nearly dying at the hands of fans with knives. There was even a fan who tried to shoot Jake Roberts at The Spotatorium in Dallas during a WCW event. Tod Gordon recently recounted a story on his podcast of having to talk fans out of assaulting Bill Alfonso in 1995. Heels regularly had their cars overturned or set on fire in the territory eras. None of it is excusable but there are some fans who will look back on that as when “real men” were involved in wrestling and how “real heels” got “real heat.” The reality is this, however - as insane as that behavior was, it was somewhat of a controlled environment and while there were certainly near-tragedies, thankfully they were a rare occurrence and for the most part, the pro wrestlers got to go home. Today, however, thanks to the Internet and social media, going home isn’t even an option for some talents because even when they shed their public persona, they have to worry not just about who they may cross paths with in public, but who’s going to break into their homes. Over the weekend, details came out surrounding a Canadian man named Shawn Chan, who “allegedly” believed that WWE star Liv Morgan had wronged him online in an online forum, so he acquired a passport and flew to the United States the same day it was issued, made his way to Florida, where he entered Morgan’s backyard, attempted to open the doors to her house, picked up her property and left a note so disturbing that Morgan contacted WWE security with the video footage from her property. Chan was arrested by federal authorities outside the WWE Performance Center, but what if he had entered the PC? What could he have been planning? Worse, what if Liv Morgan was home? What if her mother or another family member answered the door? It could have been tragic. Sadly, this isn’t even the first instance of such a thing happening. Former WWE star April Mendez wrote in her excellent memoir Crazy is My Superpower about frightening instances of hotel staff trying to enter her room and being followed from a gas station all the way to an arena by someone. Either of those situations could have ended tragically. Former WWE star Sonya Deville literally lived through the worst case scenario for being a public figure, having a deranged stalker break into her home with all the intentions in the world of kidnapping her. The stalker, now serving many years in prison, had relentlessly sent messages to Deville that were ignored. By not getting the reaction he desired online, the stalker intended to harm Deville, who by the grace of God, escaped her home with friend and then-WWE star Mandy Rose. Deville’s stalker was caught and is in prison. Liv Morgan’s is awaiting arraignment. The attackers of Bret Hart and Nattie Neidhart and Seth Rollins were at least arrested, but what is going to happen when there’s a moment that someone is assaulted or worse when they least expect it? If someone knocks on your door, you answer it, but what happens if that person pulls out pepper spray or a knife or a gun? You certainly hope you’d be able to defend yourself or be safe, but there’s no way to know until you’re in the middle of a dangerous, unthinkable situation and for many, it would be too late before they could even process it. In 1989, an actress named Rebecca Schafer answered her door and on the other side was an obsessed fan named Robert Bardo, who had been stalking her for several years. Schafer had, as many actors and actresses did in that era, answered his fan mail. He showed up trying to see her on a TV set but was thrown out by security. He returned with a knife a month later. He was ejected again, so obviously, he was known to be a threat - but that didn’t stop him from finding, even well before the advent of the Internet, Schafer’s home. He arrived with a gun and when she answered the door, expecting a script to be delivered, Bardo murdered her. Now think about the wealth of information that can be found online with relative ease and imagine being a WWE talent traveling the world and going in and out of hotels and restaurants and arenas. Not only are you living in a fishbowl, but there are websites, social media accounts and more that are pretty much tracking your movements in real time. My brother, the same one John Studd teased as a kid, texted me yesterday showing me a Facebook group his friend belonged to that showed where a WWE star was getting their Ubers in Pittsburgh yesterday. His response and my own were the same - this is insane. When WWE stars landed in Pittsburgh yesterday, on a private chartered flight from Saudi Arabia, there was a crew of fans waiting to try and get autographs and photos. Now, I’m the biggest Mark Hamill fan you can imagine, but I can’t even envision the idea of standing around a baggage claim in an airport hoping to get a photo with a jet-lagged and exhausted Luke Skywalker. Yet, here they were, lined up with photos and toys and whatever else will make them Ebay riches, asking talents who had just flown across the world, hours after taking bumps, to sign their lives away and pose for selfies. One talent told the fans, “No thank you.” One of the fans immediately barked back, “Why not?” The fact that the question is asked out loud by anyone who is allegedly an adult is the proof of the problem. We live in a world where far too many are seeking the mental or emotional reassurance of their worth through their pretend relationships with celebrities. When they don’t get it online, or believe they have been wronged by someone impersonating said celebrity, it escalates in their brain because emotionally, there was always the potential of something setting them off - and sometimes, when it comes to celebrities, they’ll never know who is set off or why until it’s too late. There is no doubt that social media has exacerbated all of this and made it worse. There are all sorts of stories of disturbed people entering the properties of names like Taylor Swift and Sandra Bullock, but while that is equally inexcusable, Hollywood names often have their own security, something even the average WWE talent cannot provide for themselves. WWE and AEW have their own security team and there are outfits like Atlas Security, but for the most part, WWE and other wrestling talents are off on their own, the last vestige of vaudeville type performers running from town to town. Unless you are one of the few who have earned and received a private plane or bus, you are traveling amongst the masses, and that means you never know who you are running into - or who is seeking to run into you, that you’re not even expecting. In the past, the era where I grew up watching WWF, it was relegated to a few hours a week on television and then it was gone until the next weekend. Now, with social media 24/7, endless streaming and YouTube accounts and TikToks and TV shows on every day plus PPVs, pro wrestling has never filled more hours weekly for the average person who wants to watch it, which means, sadly, for those who are likely to become obsessed or hinge their importance on one fantasy subject, there’s no off-switch. They are going to be more overstimulated than a child walking through Disneyland, going from Twitter to Discord to Twitch to YouTube to whatever. We’ve all seen the online responses to articles or message board authors over the years that make you tilt your head and wonder what they are thinking. These are those who may end up one day being the most dangerous person your favorite pro wrestler ever encounters. There is so much vitriol aimed at WWE talents online these days, it’s disturbing as someone who cares about pro wrestling and sees it as a third-party to witness. A few weeks ago, it was all about what an awful person Charlotte Flair was. This week, you’d think CM Punk had been the new Chris Benoit because he decided to apologize to Saudi Arabian fans. Sami Zayn was being compared to Hulk Hogan because Karrion Kross lost at the Night of Champions PPV. Jade Cargill was attacked because how dare she be booked to defeat Asuka? Everyone has an opinion about their sports, their celebrities, their movies they care about, but they don’t own these things. Star Wars fans can, unfortunately, be pretty unhinged at times, which saddens me, but watching some of the attacks on Punk for going to work Night of Champions and then, playing a babyface to the crowd before a show he’s supposed to be a babyface character on, has been mind-numbingly insane - especially given it’s not like Cody Rhodes, John Cena, Jade Cargill, Asuka, etc. were receiving the same level of anger. Is CM Punk truly a terrible person or have fans bitten too hard into the persona he portrays on television, much as they did when Roddy Piper and Terry Funk were terrorizing their television screens? No matter what the opinion is, Roddy Piper was stabbed several times over the course of his career and I don’t think CM Punk, or anyone, deserves that treatment, but if you look through some of the discourse online, you would think CM Punk deserves to be marched to the electric chair, which is insane. And, that my friends, is the crux of the true problem facing WWE wrestlers and other talents today. It’s discussed openly in locker rooms about how scary the online communities are, the threats that are shared, and how they have to have their heads on a swivel all the time, even when they are traveling together, because you never, ever know. I have friends and family members who have shared similar fears, but they work in law enforcement and have admitted that every time they pull over someone for a traffic violation, they have to worry about whether someone is going to attack or pull a gun on them, because you just never know what could happen. The difference between them and your favorite pro wrestler is that at least those in the law enforcement world are armed. No matter how tough these talents may or may not be, no matter how much they entertain and inspire or even enrage you, none of them deserve the worry, the PTSD, the assaults, the threats or the fear that they live with regularly, just because they want to put on a costume and entertain you. If I saw Big John Studd at a fair today, my first thought wouldn’t be awe. It would be: where is his security? I implore everyone in a position of power in WWE, AEW and beyond to implement everything they can to help protect talents on the road. Counsel with sports teams to see what they do to protect their players. Add more security to meet talents at airports and/or oversee hotels. Put everyone in the same place. Hire drivers with security experience to transport the talents. Minimize the potential of risk on the road. I am sure there are a lot to the security protocols that WWE and others already enact that the average person will never see, but the real worry to me, is that when some of these talents go home or even more onto the independent scene - where security is haphazard, unless Atlas Security is in the house - that is where the real danger will lurk, in the shadows, where no one can see it coming, because the worst threats are usually the ones that are unknown until it's too late. Someone is going to die. It’s just a matter of time. That is my fear. I pray it never comes to pass. submitted by /u/Tornado31619 to r/SquaredCircle [link] [comments]

All the changes made to Captain America: Brave New World during the rewrites and reshoots
We all know by now that the film's original script (and story) were written by Malcolm Spellman & Dalan Musson (writers of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and polished by director Julius Onah & Peter Glanz, but went through a few rounds of rewrites after the writers' strike ended. First, Moon Knight writer Matthew Orton was hired to rework the script before its upcoming reshoots, but he wasn't credited in the final version of the film. Writer Rob Edwards on the other hand was not only credited as a writer, but also got a "Story by" credit, meaning his changes had a pretty significant impact on the final plot of the movie. Then, the film had 22 days of reshoots during June 2024 and an additional round of pickups for a few days during November. This is everything that changed from the original script/cut of the film to the final one we got in theaters: The Serpent Society and the Airport Fight The Serpent Society was initially supposed to consist of 5 actually serpent-related super-villains, led by Rosa Salazar's "Rachel Leighton/Diamondback"), who initially played a similar role to Giancarlo Esposito's Sidewinder. The other notable member of the team would have been "Klaus Voorhees/King Cobra") played by well-known WWE wrestler Seth Rollins. Rollins' role in the film was given to Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson who played a version of "Copperhead" (only named in the credits), the Serpent Society goon which Sam had a hard time with (relevant clip). Below you can see a set photo Rosa Salazar and Seth Rollins in the original Serpent Society matching costumes when they were filming the opening fight sequence of the film, which originally took place in a Mexican airport instead of the Mexican monastery we saw in the final cut of the film. https://preview.redd.it/1b42ou8jjwje1.jpg?width=498&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ff5dd31296e055df247c845307fd51f3c640708 The weirdest thing is that Rosa Salazar was supposed to remain a member of the Serpent Society even after the rewrites, since she was also spotted on the set of the reshoots last June, this time with her comic-accurate pink hair. https://preview.redd.it/3adejqc0kwje1.jpg?width=373&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8802d631f5e064bd6b90bef13d0f26af278103df She even got her own McDonald's toy last year when McDonald's had to run their Brave New World campaign early because of pre-existing contracts which were signed before the strikes delayed the film's release. https://preview.redd.it/af5l78ockwje1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fc1058523694279856b88696703b5a2e58f56c16 The extremely reliable scooper CanWeGetSomeToast, who was sued by Marvel Studios last year for leaking promotional posters of Captain America: Brave New World, and was the first person to report both the inclusion of the Serpent Society in the original cut of the film as well as its exclusion after the rewrites, also revealed the other members of the Society and details about their powers. The members of the Serpent Society in Captain America: Brave New World consisted of Diamondback, Constrictor, Rattler, Asp and Cobra. They all would have segmented tattoos that would spread apart like seams to reveal cybernetic enhancements. Together, they made the "Serpent". -Diamondback (Rosa Salazar): She had diamondspike tattoos on her hands. She was able to shoot projectiles from her fingers. -Rattler: Sonic Booms came from his legs that "rattled". -Constricror: Charged coils that went up his arms -Asp: Had light-up fire fists -Cobra (Seth Rollins): Fangs came out of his mouth that spit out acid. The rewrites also removed the other 3 members of this team as well as their unique powers, their most important characteristic that separates this team of goons from all the others in the Marvel Universe. What's more, according to CanWeGetSomeToast, the original fight against the Serpents in the airport also included Isaiah Bradley fighting alongside Cap and Falcon in his own "Cap" suit, gifted to him by Sam. The Leader and his Big Head The Leader's look in the final cut of the film has been polarizing among fans, but that was also something that changed in the reshoots. Tim Blake Nelson had revealed 5 months ago that they basically shot "the movie twice", because his scenes were indeed all shot again last Summer, since Marvel Studios decided to change his classic Big Head from the comics, which was supposed to be his cinematic look as well in the first cut of the film, to the one we all saw in the theatrical cut. Sadly, merchandise for the film also had to be released last Summer due to the pre-existing contracts they signed before the strikes and the film's delay, so there is tons of merch with Sterns' original look out there, including his Funko Pop. https://preview.redd.it/y0yk40gzmwje1.jpg?width=275&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10294ef2840169b660a7fd459b9dea1a15e3916f There's also many pieces of concept/promotional art which show the original look of the character: https://preview.redd.it/xjwtutf6nwje1.jpg?width=207&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a92ded83775f01db762746d8662fca09a4778ca6 https://preview.redd.it/itoz2ml9nwje1.jpg?width=189&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=774d38fb820a36b027547d32fc40789bc304de39 https://preview.redd.it/we2itzxbnwje1.jpg?width=184&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8de2ac61cf1c4a07e07e35b41bd0014f9fafc0e6 Adamantium's original properties, Cap vs Red Hulk fight, Ross' fate and the original post-credits scene Once again according to CanWeGetSomeToast, Adamantium was supposed to be able to absorb gamma radiation in the original cut of the film. That would have been Cap's secret weapon to defeat Red Hulk, as he would use Adamantium to drain Ross of his power, which would eventually lead to his apparent death. That would have led to the funeral scene they shot during the original production of the film, a set photo from which you can see below, featuring Sam and Leila. The day they shot this scene was the day Liv Tyler first came on set as well, with a paparazzo leaking her cameo in the film, prompting Marvel Studios to officially reveal her return through the trades that same night. https://preview.redd.it/87x0wgwiowje1.png?width=531&format=png&auto=webp&s=5b3efb39af66729b5b8f2a4cd016b300ef38bc97 Well-known, but controversial leaker, MyTimeToShineHello had revealed in 2023 that the post-credits scene of the film would have featured Betty as well, but didn't give any more context other than that. Leaks from a person who had reportedly watched an early cut of the film before the reshoots during a test screening, revealed that the post-credits scene featured Betty seeing fiery footsteps in her backyard, followed by Red Hulk’s glowing red eyes before he vanished, revealing that he actually survived and is still out there in his Hulk form. Theories back then on the spoilers subreddit were that this was Marvel's way to keep using Red Hulk in the future without having to show Ross/Harrison Ford. Amadeus Cho.. added in reshoots and removed again during pickups In the original cut of the film, Sam never got the pills he found at Sterns' cell investigated. Then in the reshoots, they decided to add a scene where Sam and Joaquin visited Stark Industries to find "the smartest scientist working there" in order to have the pills investigated, and that scientist was Amadeus Cho), Helen Cho's son, played by Logan Kim. Then, when Amadeus finds out the pills are coated with gamma radiation and tries to call Sam to inform him, The Leader shows up to stop him, but doesn't kill him like he did Dennis (Sam's Navy Seals friend). This was revealed by another person who watched a test screening of the film, this time post-reshoots, and he got everything else right about the film, so we know he is legit. During pick-ups however, they decided to scrap all that again and replaced Amadeus' scenes with Dennis' scenes. I'm not even sure if Dennis was even in the film before the pickups in November, because as of now, 2 out of his 3 scenes were NOT in the film, even after the June reshoots. What's more, again revealed by the person who attended the test screening, the current post-credits scene we see in the film had a few additional lines in the beginning where Sam asks The Leader if he gave Amadeus "Hulk juice", setting up Amadeus as Brawn, his gamma alternate persona in the MCU. This is what the leaker said: “Sam visits the leader in the raft, mentions some thing about giving hulk juice to Amadeus Cho, and Sterns goes ‘something big and bad is comin” and Sam is like ‘I’ll be ready’. Ruth's mutant powers According to the person who had watched the original test screening before the reshoots, Ruth had her mutant powers and used them to stop Isaiah after he attempted to assassinate Ross as well as to stop the brain-washed guards in the Echo One base. Then, after the fight, she talked to Sam about how she had those powers since she was a young child. These scenes were removed after the reshoots and they made Ruth a regular ex-Black Widow. You’ve earned it, TK. More WWE castaways. You need that final piece of the Hurt Business. You need 1/3 of PFC. And AOP? They’d just be icing on the cake. All you gotta do is push further down the card Cole, Archer, and Shida. After all, why push those loyal to you when the new toys are right there?
Those extra 1,000 viewers. They’re the first step into reclaiming that million. Sure, WBD are happy with 600k. But wouldn’t they be happier with 700k? Or 800k? And wouldn’t that show your dad that you’re responsible and a good businessman. Think if you’d be able to stand on your own without his help. Nothing says “Dad, I’m my own man!” like adding Blair Davenport to your barely used women’s roster. submitted by /u/KingdomFartsOG to r/SCJerk [link] [comments]

I won a contest to see money in the bank 2024 but because I’m in a wheelchair they cannot accommodate me
I am NOT the Original Poster. That is u/BirdmanDodd. They posted in r/WWE Thanks to u/thatdudeman52 for the rec! Do NOT comment on Original Posts. The lates update is 7 days old. Trigger Warning: ableism Mood Spoiler: happy ending! Editor's Note: because there has been some confusion, the "money in the bank 2024" is a WWE (wrestling) event. That's why OOP posted in that sub! Here's a link to the event) and info. Original Post: July 3, 2024 I was thrilled when I got a dm on July 2nd that I had won two tickets to see money in the bank at the scotiabank arena on july 6th. It must be noted that I am a left leg amputee in a power wheelchair .My wife and I scrambled around to find a way to toronto on such short notice, but managed to find our local cab company with a wheelchair van that would bend over backwards to help us get there. Anyone who is in a wheelchair, or has limited mobility will know that pre planning is key when it comes to a successful outing. I let them know in my DM back that I am in a wheelchair so accessible seating is needed. They assured me that they were contacting the vendor to get the appropriate seating and that they were excited about me going. My wife was worried as she looked at the seating that was left ticket wise and saw it was a pretty slim amount of seating remaining. We were assured though that they were working on it. Today July 3rd @ 2 pm today I got an email from them saying that they were unable to secure accessible seating. I am absolutely devastated. To have such a cool experience offered to me was a true miracle. There is no way in my life that i would ever be able to afford to go myself as I am on disability support. (Disability supports are woefully inadequate and i have been a disability and poverty advocate for the last several years) Since I lost my leg 7 years ago I have not been able to afford to leave my city to travel very often as a wheelchair van is super expensive. It was a real stretch to be able to afford to even get to Money in the Bank, my wife and I have been saving wheelchair taxi scripts (like 1/2 price coupons that you can buy each month through our city) for years and were so happy that we figured out we had enough to go. They have offered me the rate of 2 tickets $300 as per their contest rules. But how can you replace an experience like this for a guy that cannot even dream to have an opportunity to see and experience a show like this and get to the city? It’s like dangling something so fantastic in front of you, being just out of reach, and yanking it back at the very last minute. I think this was very poor planning on the contest runners part. I am surprised that they would leave drawing the names of contest winners until 5 days before the event. Figuring out how to wrangle a trip is not easy for a lot of people these days, especially if you are disabled. This is disability pride month and I am a proud disabled person, but this makes me feel lesser than. I am so devastated. I fight so hard in my community to ensure that events are accessible to all. I’m on city council accessibility advisory committee, I speak regularly with local groups, organizations and schools about disability and Indigenous rights. This makes me so sad that nothing could be done because of their poor planning and lack of foresight. I have been an on and off fan of WWE since I was little and have been to a few house shows, even a network event in my manual wheelchair before I lost my leg. I was in such high spirits knowing that I was going to be able to see Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, the women’s division, and most of all Kevin Owens. I don’t expect anything to happen from telling my story, but I had to tell someone or vent in some way. I feel excluded and defeated. Relevant Comments: Commenter: Who’s “they” in this scenario? I think attempting to reach out to WWE directly would be a great move here. WWE ultimately controls the allotment of these giveaway/promo tickets and they’d be pissed to learn this is what’s happening OOP: It was Toys R US Canada https://www.instagram.com/reel/C8pHs0pouyr/?igsh=ZGQxZ3Fpd3ppNGJn Someone offers to start a Gofundme (for some reason): Oh god, no! I don’t want that. Its not warranted and i’d rather have someone else go like a Make a wish kid or something. If nothing happens from this except rules are changed and people think about accessibility than thats fine with me. Whatever happens and hopefully it works out for the best. I can’t miss what i never had but maybe i can turn this into an opportunity so that someone else doesn’t miss out. Commenter: I'm a little confused here. You mention you would never be able to afford this due to being on disability but four months ago were making posts asking about the accessibility of Disney World as you were planning on taking a trip. 25 days ago you went to a convention in Niagara Falls. 3 months ago you got a new Pokémon themed tattoo in colour. I know nothing about tattoos except that a good tattoo is usually expensive. OOP: Yeah, that was due to a possibility of something huge happening (it did NOT pan out) The TL:DR on that Disney thing is that i was involved in a lawsuit for losing my leg and it did not pan out unfortunately. It was from using a drug called Invokana which can cause lower limb amputation IF i’d won the suit, i was gonna take my wife to Disney world If we could make it work (It would have been too difficult likely due to my health to be gone for that long) My sister in law paid for the whole weekend (Her birthday gift for me) (birthday is in October but we wanted to celebrate together) The wheelchair van rental was 600-700 for the weekend plus we could only go for one day. It had been the first time i had traveled out my area that wasn’t for a doctors appointment or surgery. I haven’t left my home city for several years using my power wheelchair. The tattoo was a gift from family to celebrate my Indigenous name change that was coming (now is in process) That tat was relatively cheap cause the local shop here and artist is fantastic Commenter: Tag Cody on X , update this post with the link to the tweet or make a new post and I will share and tell others to do so as well OOP: Good idea Thank you friend. We have a word in my native language and its a simple one but its “Miigwetch” In Ojibwe (Indigenous Canadian) It means “Thank you” Update 1 (Same Post): Same Day, a few hours later Edit 1: Local CTV news station contacted me and am being interviewed tomorrow Link to my tweet-https://x.com/birdmandodd/status/1808589980664803675?s=46&t=k40TvXD0wmwl1AP17mPYvQ I wanted to say THANK you to outpouring of love and support from everyone and everywhere. I am utterly humbled by your empathy and kindness. Whatever happens, happens but i am blessed to have known such kindness for my situation. Update 2 (Same Post): Same Day Edit 2: I’ve been told that some people in WWE have been contacted. So whatever happens, happens. If i don’t get to go then i hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else. Like maybe people become more aware of accessibility and the like. It terrifies me that what if this had happened to a kid or something, right? I’m an adult and i can take bad news but this struck home hard for some reason. I’m a spiritual person and i want to thank you for the well wishes and thoughts tonight. It has been overwhelming and i’m not afraid to admit, it has made me very emotional and i’ve cried cause i don’t know what to do with all these emotions. I’ll update after i speak with the reporter tomorrow. Update 3 (Same Post): July 4, 2024 Edit 3 Update: WWE has contacted me directly and apologized profusely for what has happened. I am going to Money in the bank with all my accessibility needs covered. This is a good ending, whatever happens next is magical and unexpected. THANK ALL of you who posted and helped Update 4 (Same Post): July 4 2024 (a few hours later) Edit 4: Cody Rhodes just called me personally and we talked for like 5 minutes The American nightmare made a Canadian dream submitted by

Tony: WWE does contract tampering trying to steal my wrestlers! RVD: Tony called me for Dub TV, asked me what my current deal with WWE was & what they were paying me & was trying to work something out that would make me want to come for a hometown show & 4/20 show as a bunch of his toys were broken.

OOP asks AITA for admitting to her son that she never wanted to have a child?
This OOP was very rude and abrasive to a lot of people. So, her update, which was posted on her account, was removed when I believe her account got deleted. I used Reveddit and CAMAS to retrieve this. Remember I AM NOT THE OOP. Jan 10th 2023: 1st Post: AITA for admitting to my son that I never wanted to have a child? So, I saw a post here that reminded me of my situation and it made me think to post. I have a 15 year old son Jakob. When I was 18 I married a classmate I was dating, we were stupid teenagers and I got pregnant. He really wanted to have a kid so I was pressured into having Jakob even though I hated being pregnant and taking care of him. Our families were so disappointed that they demanded we give the baby up to somebody so that we can focus on our education. We didn't and Jakob was about six months old when his dad died in a motorcycle crash. About a year after I gave Jakob up to my great-aunt, she legally adopted him and my life got so much better. I finished up my education and by the time I was 26, I became the manager at a club. When Jakob was 11, my great-aunt was diagnosed with an illness and it was determined she could no longer care for him. So, as per her wishes, I took Jakob back and began working nights so that I could care for him even though I hate working nights. I have changed my entire schedule to accommodate for him. I never wanted to take somebody to basketball practice, drop off and pick up a bunch of kids in a carpool or have noisy Xbox games played through my apartment. But I do now and have sacrificed my entire existence for him. And here's the kicker, I actually started to enjoy it because Jakob was so great and up until a year ago I was even thinking this was a nice way to live. And then something changed, he got rude, starts throwing his backpack when he comes home, will throw away the lunch I make him, will swear and he won't even hug me anymore. We had an argument yesterday because he started watching WWE real loud instead of doing his chores and that woke me up way too early and I got very upset when he said I wanted to give him away because I don't. I admitted that I never wanted to have him but he's not some toy I can just toss away. But instead of thinking about what I said, he just started crying really badly and this morning he wouldn't even get out of bed and go to school, he just won't stop hugging me and crying. I've called in sick for tonight but I'm just wondering if I was wrong to handle it how I did. One of my friends said she would have divorced her husband if he said that to their son. Comments by OOP on 1st Post: OOP insists she is not abusive: "It is not abusive, it can't be. I was trying to be the opposite of that. I have never been abusive in my life." OOP reveals why she didn't take her son to therapy: "I tried to take him to therapy after my great-aunt died but he refused because she was no longer in her right mind and instilled it in him that if the state (we're Canadian so you can tell from that how far gone she was) tries to send him to therapy they're up to no good. So he would adamantly refuse." OOP states she still would not want a baby: "No, if I am being honest, I don't want to be a parent in the same circumstances I was in when I gave Jakob to my great-aunt. But to Jakob right now I do. To a crying, whining unable to clean himself baby, I don't. But to a smart growing young man, yes I do." OOP reveals when her son began acting out: "It has only been the last year, he's changed into somebody unrecognizable practically. And he is not being placed away from me. My whole point was that I would never give him up or the life we have together up." OOP reveals she does say I Love You to her son: "I do say I love you multiple times. When I wake him up, when I drop him off at school, when I pick him up, when I make dinner when I send him to sleep, when we huggle and so many more times I can't even count." OOP clarifies her toy comparison: "Oh my God like a toy is a simile, you're not supposed to take it literally." OOP clarifies when she got her son back to somebody assuming it was recent: "I've had him for four years. Not four months! We have reconnected! We had a good relationship until he started suddenly acting out a year ago!" OOP shares what she wants from her son: "I want that closeness and openness with him. I want to know why he's changed so much in the last year so that I can help him get better. Maybe my real problem was that I saw him as more mature than he is." Jan 11th 2023: 2nd Post: To everybody who keeps sending me harassing messages The stuff you are saying about me and about me losing custody of my son is not funny. I can accept where I went wrong: I made a simple mistake while attempting to do something good. I love my son and I am not who I am as a teenager, I am not somebody who would give him away. I want him to stay with me. One thing that I didn't put in my post was that I am planning on moving us to an apartment closer to our city's top university because I know that a boy as smart as him will be able to go there. My son is a wonderful child and I love him. As for everyone asking me whether or not I apologized, of course I apologized what I said made my son cry so bad he wouldn't stop hugging me and wouldn't go to school. I'm not made of stone and I'm not an abuser even though that's what so many of you tried to paint me as. For the people who did offer helpful suggestions because you're good people instead of those of you trying to get some kind of moral high ground because you live online and contribute nothing to the world, I thank you all so much. I had a conversation with my son yesterday when I got him to come out for dinner about things. I made it clear to him that I did not envision the last four years of my life but they have been the greatest. To have him call me mom and hear him talk and have fun and to get to give him hugs and kisses and make him food makes my life amazing, that's why even though he's been so different this last year, I'm never sending him away. I explained that what I meant by the toy simile was that I didn't want him to think that I saw him like that because I'm not who I was when I gave birth to him, I'm not the stupid teenager who let him be adopted by a rich aunt. We both hugged and he forgave me and told me that he knows I love him but what I said made him scared. We did then talk about what's been going on the last year and I don't feel like I can write it here, at least not now. But he was finally honest with me, he cried in my arms and I understand now that bad things were on the cusp of happening but now they won't. Because of what was going on, I have made it clear to him we will explore options for getting professional help but it doesn't mean what my great-aunt told him it means. So, to sum up: thank you and don't be malicious. Comments by OOP on 2nd Post: OOP reveals her state when she gave her son up: "Yes, when I was a suicidal teenager I gave my son away to a relative who could take good care of him. I am not a teenager who didn't want a son anymore. Are you incapable of reading now?" OOP justifying her mistake: "Just because my mistake had a complex reaction doesn't mean it wasn't simple. And making it about myself? I'm sorry I'm not fucking telepathic and can only tell things from my perspective. No shit I have thought about how hard it has been for him. That's why I wanted to take him into therapy and I would have if my aunt hadn't made him so afraid of it. Beyond that, you're misinterpreting the words I'm saying. Suddenly caring? Yes, it was an adjustment but I haven't suddenly started caring. Maybe you should be less upset I called out people like you for wanting to feel morally superior and actually read what I wrote." OOP commenting on why her son watches wrestling: "I never will. I hate how blind I was to what was going on and that I wasn't able to understand. What really scared me was when he told me he wanted to be big like his favourite wrestler so that nobody could ever hurt us. Not just him but us. I have a son who is so much better than me." OOP giving a little bit more elaboration: "I told you why I made a permanent decision. Because it was better for both of us. Can you imagine what would have happened to him if I killed myself and nobody went to check on him? I wasn't in the state of mind to take care of him. Until my aunt got sick, I did not want him back because he had a much better life with her and I thought it would hurt him. When I learned she wanted me to take him, it was different because they were her wishes and if she could believe in me, then I could do it. I do want him and I have made very clear that who I am now is not who I was then. I am not a teenager who wants to kill herself. I am a woman who wants to be his mother and does not ever want to let him go. As for therapy, as I have said multiple times, after what I have learned about why his attitude was changing, I am taking him as soon as I can sort out all the legal processes I will need to this week." OOP responding to someone saying she was an adult when she gave birth: "I'm sorry, how do you pronounce 18? Is it eighTEEN or eighADULT? I let my aunt legally adopt him. I could not legally take him back and my aunt provided him with a far better lifestyle than I was able to. Being without him and becoming a manager is why I am able to support him and give him a good life now. You cannot use who I was to claim I don't love him now. I'm done arguing with you, you're just another idiot who wants to believe they're better than me without even trying to understand." submitted by /u/BludgeonBudgie to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

did failed SJW product kill Toys R Us? WorldClassBullshitters informs us that the toy retailer may shut all stores this coming week and shows nearly all the excess toys in his store are Star Wars and WWE Diva Dolls.
A Dying Toys R Us Can't Sell Star Wars Toys - WorldClassBullshitters in this 27-minute video, WorldClassBullshitters takes us to their local TRU to show off the excess stock that warms the shelves since nobody bought them. nearly all the stock seems to be StarWars toys that sometimes date back to TFA and Rogue One with the majority being the Buil-A-Saber line. the other shelfwarmers tended to be girl's dolls about boy's franchises mainly the Star wars Forces of Destiny dolls, the Marvel Fan Girls barbies, and the oddest product WWE Divas. virtually every boy's action figure is out of stock except for marvel's Toys-to-life brand Playmation. essentially all the stuff nobody wanted or asked for and they seemed to dominate the toy aisle making little room for worthwhile stuff and in turn, making trips to the toy store not that worthwhile. the rest of the video is just the narrator talking about how the uninteresting stuff clogging shelves made Toys R Us' sales drop into bankruptcy. he does mention how there could be some blame on brick and mortar losing to digital retail but how it's mainly bad toys. the rest reminisces about the nostalgia of toy stores. bottom line though have these SJW pitched products the cause of this bankruptcy like the comic Shops and Sony Pictures? Toys 'R' Us could go out of business next week. That's bad news for Lego and Barbie - CNN Money he cites the above article about how most of the major toy companies have dropped in sales the past few years, specifically the top two Mattel and Hasbro, who have been peddling the SJW type toys. though be fair Lego has also faced their lowest sales drop in 13 years and attributes it to customers already having enough bricks since their sales are a steady flat line rather than a true dip going by this article. and doing some math that was the same year Bionicle's Hordika saga debuted which was the franchises' least favorite wave. also the debut of the franchise' first female villain who was met with much ridicule. fun facts. Edit: apparently I was misremembering or misinformed as it seems Roodaka was well accepted as one of the few good things from that year with said "ridicule" just being jokes about her overtly feminine features such as Heels, Hips, and breasts. she was actually very cunning and menacing in the story. so are SJWs to blame for Toys R Us' demise? is it competition in digital retail? are kids just not into physible playthings when video games are available as some folks speculate? EDIT: Youtuber Company Man actually made a video on the topic showing what really happened: The Decline of Toys R Us...What Happened? - Company Man the gist of it is that they were bought using predatory debt loans where they put up toys r us themselves as collateral if I am making sense. others in the comments have explained it better and more concise. EDIT: another video that tackles all the other factors: How Amazon Destroyed a $6 Billion Retail Giant - A Case Study for Entrepreneurs - Valuetainment in short an endless string of missed opportunities and bad business decisions letting them fall behind leading trends. as an aside learning that Lego's decline is due to oversaturation of their product makes me seriously wonder about Bionicle's reboot failing so hard it didn't even reach its 3rd year when even filler themes did so. EDIT also hello to the TopMinds subreddit who linked this post. sadly i doubt you will see this as you do not read the whole thing or even past the submission title. EDIT: hey again TopMinds! I'd suggest making it a policy to have any reddit submissions be archived so they won't get the attention of the subjects in question since dups always show up in the "other discussions" tab. also to discourage calling said subjects to your sub. way more amusing to have them discover you by chance as they get more animated with emotion and are unprotected by their echo chamber. it's okay to gawk at the crazies but it's in bad taste to mess with them. EDIT glad you took notice of my edits TopMinds! unsure how you failed to notice the original edits that showcase the reality of the topic and thus debunk my previous notions but it's amusing how you obsessively check in every time to read those edits while you need to ping me each time to get my attention :) surprised you took such offense at my suggestions of running a gawking forum that prohibits bullying ( okey to watch and document not okey to provoke and harass) letting the lolcow you gawk at come willingly by their own discretion keeps you from being liable from accusations of bullying :D calling them to the topic about their own mockery screams harassment though:( not good. mocking behind one's back is gossip mocking them to their face is bullying. if you are that concerned about me spreading misinformation just to sew more SJW hate you are free to come by and call me out on it. that's what 90% of this thread did and what I acknowledged in my original edits :) I mean I understand how gawking subs are more about taking the piss rather than seriously debate (hence why I didn't address the inaccuracies like it would mean something) but you seem to be taking this topic seriously and I think personally. so you can come on down and engage with the crazies like you want to or just sit back and laugh at their nonsense, but just bugging them for their attention is just poor taste mate. submitted by /u/KaltatheNobleMind to r/KotakuInAction [link] [comments]

15 years ago today, Cartoon Network gave three hours in the middle of the night to an experiment called Adult Swim. (x-post /r/adultswim)
Adult Swim (join us in /r/adultswim!) 15 years ago today, Cartoon Network gave three hours in the middle of the night to an experiment called Adult Swim. For the last 10 years in a row, the network has ranked No. 1 among adults 18-34 years old in basic-cable ratings across the total day. The median age of the Adult Swim viewer is 24 years old, about half that of viewers across all broadcast and cable channels. It saved Family Guy and is responsible for making Seth MacFarlane a TV powerhouse with three shows, three movies, a nine figure net worth, and a relationship with Emilia Clarke. (not a good thing to everyone) It saved Futurama. It turned Tim and Eric from two weirdos who were mailing unsolicited DVD’s to Bob Odenkirk to comedy superstars with a multimedia and multichannel entertainment kingdom with two movies and thirteen television shows, including Nathan for You, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Review, W/ Bob & David, and Check it Out! With Dr. Steve Brule, which stars an Academy Award nominated actor. It boosted the careers of Killer Mike, Flying Lotus, Odd Future, MF Doom, Danger Mouse, and completely made the career of MC Chris. It introduced Killer Mike and El-P, who went on to form Run the Jewels. It gave Brendon Small a platform to launch his multimedia Metalocalypse franchise of a show, albums, and even live tours. It caused a terrorism scare that cost the head of Cartoon Network his job. (See my Aqua Teen retrospective here) Let’s set the scene It's September 2, 2001. The animated adult comedy landscape is nascent but sparsely populated, and you still (barely) live in an innocent, pre-9/11 world. Mission Hill has been off the air for 1 year, Space Ghost and Dr. Katz for 2 years, and Beavis and Butt-Head and Duckman for 4 years. (The Critic has been off for 6 but who cares?) Home Movies only lasted five episodes before being canceled by UPN 2 years ago. The Simpsons is already arguably in decline with Oakley and Weinstein gone. Family Guy has been granted a last minute reprieve of a third season, but its likely to be canceled again as Fox continuously shifts its schedule, and would you really miss it anyway? King of the Hill is going strong, but that's kind of an acquired taste. Futurama is great, but like Family Guy, Fox is fucking with its schedule so you worry. And of course, there's South Park, but nobody wants to enjoy just 1 show forever. The future seems bleak. South Park, the Simpsons, and Beavis and Butthead are popular. Why won’t anyone else give shows like these a serious chance? You’ve heard rumors that Cartoon Network aired some really strange shows with no warning last year. You even caught a random new episode of Space Ghost over the summer! They’ve experimented with weird late night stuff before, like ToonHeads and Late Night Black and White, but even that was still mainly for kids and they canceled Space Ghost in ’99! The bastards. You resign yourself to channel surfing when you hear this. What does it mean? What could it be for? What the hell is “adult swim’? (LOWERCASE INTENDED). Curious, you keep watching, and you can’t believe it, it’s Home Movies)! And it’s… a new episode?!?! Enraptured, you keep watching. A show about fast food? A show about Birdman as a lawyer? A show about an underwater research station full of insane people? Brak got his own damn show! And even Cowboy goddamn Bebop! One of the greatest anime of all time! What the hell is going on?!?! Beginnings In 1993, Mike Lazzo was senior vice president of Cartoon Network, a subsidiary network of Turner that was just a year old and hoping to challenge its more established competitors, Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel. The decline of cartoons on the networks due to FCC regulations and market shifts (see: Wikipedia) gave an upstart like Cartoon Network a chance. Even back then at a children’s focused channel like Cartoon Network, however, it was obvious animation wasn’t just for adults, so Ted Turner asked Mike Lazzo, a high school dropout who’d worked his way up from Turner’s shipping department[1], to create a cheap cartoon that would air late at night and appeal to adults. “What, reasoned Lazzo, could be more low-cost than to take animation frames from the old Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning children's cartoon series Space Ghost and Dino Boy and superimpose them over newly filmed live action sequences? Going a bit farther, Lazzo decided to use the old reedited Space Ghost footage as part of a concept he'd been toying with for year: a satirical David Letterman-style talk show, with a thoroughly clueless and humorless host asking celebrity guests a steady stream of stupid, non sequitur questions. As a result, Space Ghost Coast to Coast was not only the Cartoon Network's first original cartoon series, but it was also the first animated talk show in TV history!”[2] “The original name of the show stemmed from early 1993, while Andy Merrill and Jay Edwards were coming up with names for a marathon of the original Space Ghost TV show to air on Cartoon Network, trying to find things that rhyme with "Ghost".”[3] Space Ghost got 6 seasons and even a kid friendly spin off (Cartoon Planet) before being canceled, or at least put on hiatus, in 1999. Space Ghost family tree Dave Willis Aqua Teen Hunger Force Squidbillies Sealab 2021 Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell Perfect Hair Forever Young Person’s Guide to History Too Many Cooks Matt Maiellaro Aqua Teen Hunger Force Squidbillies Sealab 2021 The Brak Show Perfect Hair Forever Adam Reed Sealab 2021 Frisky Dingo ARCHER Matt Harrigan Late Show with David Letterman KaBlam! Celebrity Deathmatch Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law Perfect Hair Forever Tom Goes to the Mayor Assy McGee Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! FishCenter Live Kickoff While entertaining pitches for a variety of adult-focused cartoons, Lazzo realized the potential for packaging them as a complete adult-focused block. Different names were considered, including “ibiso”, Spanish for “stop”, and “Parental Warning”, but he eventually settled on Adult Swim. Cartoon Network aired pilots for Harvey Birdman, Aqua Teen, Sealab, and Brak unannounced on different late night hours in December 2000, and aired two new episodes of Space Ghost in May and July 2001 to test the waters. After greenlighting the pilots, reviving Home Movies, and securing the rights to Cowboy Bebop, Adult Swim was born, starting off with the first new episode of Home Movies, “Director’s Cut”. Family Guy Family Guy was created by Hanna-Barbera veteran Seth MacFarlane, who’d worked on several Cartoon Network shows developed by Lazzo, including Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly dog, and Dexter’s Lab, as an adaptation of his thesis film for his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. The show struggled under Fox’s infamously fickle scheduling, which saddled it with low ratings. Adult Swim began reruns of the show in April 2003, and the show was canceled by Fox the same year. It immediately skyrocketed to Adult Swim’s highest rated show, with ratings 239% higher on the late night network than on Fox. The ratings success, coupled with strong DVD sales, convinced Fox to renew the show for a fourth season. Family Guy has since aired 14 total seasons and numerous specials. Show creator Seth MacFarlane used the success of the show to successfully negotiate for two additional shows on Fox, American Dad, which has aired 13 seasons and which airs in reruns on Adult Swim today, and The Cleveland Show, which aired for four seasons on Fox before being canceled and also still airs in reruns on Adult Swim today. Futurama The brainchild of Simpsons creator and television icon Matt Groening and Simpsons writer David X. Cohen, Futurama also struggled with Fox’s capricious scheduling and only lasted one more season than Family Guy before being canceled. Adult Swim picked up the show for reruns in 2003, and producers used the high ratings to convince Fox to greenlight four direct-to-DVD movies. The success of those movies convinced Comedy Central to pick up the show for a revival and reruns. Futurama went on to air 52 additional episodes on Comedy Central. Tim and Eric Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim met while studying at Temple University, and began producing comedy shorts shortly thereafter. In 2002, they mailed a packet containing glossy headshots, a letter, a DVD containing early versions of Tom Goes to the Mayor, and an itemized bill for all of the above to Conan O’Brien, Robert Smigel, and fortuitously, Bob Odenkirk. Bob was the only who responded.[4] From that pitch, we got one of Adult Swim’s strangest shows and the beginning of perhaps the most controversial Adult Swim success stories. One look at Adult Swim’s social media presence will tell you that there is perhaps no bigger demarcator in the Adult Swim fan base than feelings on Tim and Eric. A switch from the dialogue driven animated “stoner” comedy of the early crop of shows to the live action surreal “cringe” humor of Tim and Eric, which relied heavily upon video editing, is still, in my opinion, the biggest cultural inflection point in Adult Swim’s history. T&E leveraged the success of TGTTM to negotiate for their next show, the most controversial Adult Swim show ever, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! which ran for 5 seasons. The show was followed by a Christmas special, a movie, a failed pilot with Gregg Turkington in his Neil Hamuburger, the Twilight Zone inspired anthology show Tim and Eric Bedtime Stories, and a direct spinoff, Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule, starring Academy Award nominated actor John C. Reilly, which just concluded its 4th season. Tim and Eric are no longer just late night TV alt comedy stars, however. As their success on Adult Swim grew, so did their reach outside of the network. They’ve produced shows on IFC, Comedy Central, and Netflix, including the breakout hit Nathan for You, and the Netflix revival of their comedy mentor Bob Odenkirk’s show Mr. Show. Eric has built up a career as a major music video director, producing videos for Ben Folds, Beach House, Major Lazer, and more. Tim has established himself as a (semi-serious) musician, and acted in mainstream hits like the hit film Bridesmaids, The Simpsons, the Office, and more. Together with Sarah Silverman, Reggie Watts, and Michael Cera, Tim and Eric created the popular YouTube comedy channel Jash. The Abso Lutely train shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, and the divisive reactions it incites among Adult Swim fans show no signs of abating. Metalocalypse Brendon Small was no stranger to Adult Swim. They’d been a savior to him when they’d saved Home Movies from UPN obscurity and cancellation, but the show ended in 2004. During this time, he began attending metal shows with his friend Tommy Blacha, former writer for Conan, SNL’s TV Funhouse, and Da Ali G Show, and the former creative director for the WWE. From these shows, the idea for Metalocalypse, originally titled Deathclock, was born. Small, a guitar geek and graduate of the Berklee College of Music, worked to ensure that the show was as faithful to real guitar playing as it was funny, carefully syncing the animation of realistic finger and hand movements to the show’s music. Almost every episode featured an original metal song, and the list of guest stars soon became a Who’s Who of the metal and rock worlds. Dethklok wasn’t just a fictional band, however. Small and Adult Swim released three full length albums and an EP as Dethklok, and even conducted full nationwide tours in “Gorillaz style” several times, with video depictions of the animated band and a real band on stage, featuring Small and others. But all good things must come to an end. In it’s third season Metalocalypse became the first of only two Adult Swim shows ever to increase its running time from one season to the next (the other was China, IL) going from the more Adult Swim traditional time of 11 minutes up to 22. This did not last, though, and for the show’s fourth season its running time was brought back down to 11 minutes. In what proved to be another one of the network’s most controversial decisions ever, the fourth season would come to be the last, as Adult Swim canceled the series. Contentious negotiations followed (Small told one interviewer that he hung up on Lazzo in fury the last time they ever spoke by phone), but the show ultimately concluded its broadcast history with an hour length rock opera titled The Doomstar Requiem. TRILL-I-AM’S CONJECTURE Mike Lazzo is famously hands on with Adult Swim creators, to the point of driving the development of individual characters. “He suggested that 14-year-old Morty should show more backbone, because that’s the character whose perspective the audience gets most. The producers took his advice and added a new scene to the first episode in which the grandson seizes control of a space ship from a drunken Rick to prevent a catastrophic explosion. “That’s how we found [the characters’] relationship,” says Mr. Harmon. “You don’t want to let Lazzo down. Which, as a writer, is such a crazy thing to hear yourself say about a suit.”” So basically, if you have a show on Adult Swim, you’re not insulated from the bigwigs by layers of bureaucracy. There’s just one bigwig and he’s directly involved with the creative process of almost every show. So if you have a show, he better like it. Fans will tell you that Mike Lazzo doesn’t appreciate good art and that his cancellation of Metaltocalypse makes him worse than Hitler. I think this misses the point of why he canceled it. From bits and pieces of interviews and one-off appearances on Adult Swim streaming shows, I’ve basically put together that Mike Lazzo thought the show had forgotten that Adult Swim was a comedy network, and its increasing emphasis on telling a serialized serious story involving prophecies and talking whales instead of telling jokes with music on the side meant the show was no longer suited for Adult Swim. The only other Adult Swim show that’s ever attempted to tell a semi-serious serialized story, The Venture Bros., has dealt with the balance between story and comedy by staying light-hearted throughout and grounding the serious elements in a world and web of characters that’s constantly being lampshaded and being put in your face as inherently less than serious. The Boondocks would make serious points (Return of the King and The Passion of Reverend Ruckus) but was balanced out by many more comedic episodes. Do you think serious storytelling has a place on Adult Swim? If your answer is yes, then you probably think Lazzo was wrong to cancel Metalocalypse. If your answer is no, it would seem that Lazzo made the right decision. Anime In the 90s, Toonami used hits like Dragonball Z to pave the way the normalization of anime on American children’s television. Adult Swim followed it up with the first full-throated introduction of mature action anime to American audiences. With shows like Cowboy Bebop, The Big O, and Samurai Champloo, Adult Swim blew the doors off of anime in America, exposing audiences to an entire catalog of shows that no other network would have been willing to broadcast. Even Toonami could never have aired a show Trinity Blood. Breaking even more new ground, Adult Swim has even helped finance original Western-friendly anime like Space Dandy and the upcoming second season FLCL. While anime on the network is currently limited to only one day a week, it’s still a testament to Adult Swim’s relative bravery in the world of television that they’re willing to air a category of shows that almost no other other American television network has been willing to air in the 15 years since AS started, except for flirtations by G4 and SyFy. Streaming Adult Swim currently has 10 different 24/7 streaming channels, only two of which require a cable or satellite subscription. They have a daily animation marathon, a daily live action marathon, a marathon of Tim and Eric, a marathon of The Venture Bros., a stream of their growing companion online channel of shows like FishCenter and Stupid Morning Bullshit, a marathon of the experimental video/music show Off the Air, a Toonami marathon, a marathon replay of the online show FishCenter Live, and an east and west coast live simulcast of the television block that requires cable or satellite. While their deal with Hulu took a great amount of content off AdultSwim.com, the amount of episodes they offer on their website for free and with unimpeded access is still completely unparalleled in the American television landscape. infomercials/Off the Air Adult Swim is more friendly to experimental video and comedy than any other television brand or network in American history. No other network would be willing to air a show like Off the Air (albeit at 4 AM). And while hits like Too Many Cooks may briefly capture the internet’s attention, it’s just the tip of the iceberg of Adult Swim’s insane and daring series of shorts known as Infomercials. There’s “M.O.P.Z.” a full feature length film sped up until its only 11 minutes long. There’s the disturbing “This House Has People In It” from internet famous experimental fillmmaker Alan Resnick, complete with its own still yet to be fully resolved ARG. There’s the (literally) sedate “Joe Pera Talks You To Sleep”. CONCLUSION I could go on and on and on. If i’d started this earlier, I would’ve gone into Xavier Renegade Angel, Moral Orel, The Boondocks, and so much more. Suffice it to say, Adult Swim has changed American television and American culture. While it may not have the flashy success of the more “grown-up” networks like HBO, FX, and Comedy Central, it’s a sleeping giant that those very same networks are falling all over each other to learn from. The only other TV network to ever have a strong cultural brand identity, MTV, was already arguably in decline at this point in its life. Adult Swim is still going strong as hell, and I hope it’ll still be here in another 15 years. I’ve given it a lot of nights in my life, and like a body pillow, it’s been there for me.
