Why is Zoysia Grass Seed trending?

1
Drought Resistance
Zoysia grass is highly drought-resistant, making it an ideal choice for regions with limited water resources. Its deep root system allows it to survive prolonged dry periods.
2
Low Maintenance
Once established, Zoysia grass requires less maintenance compared to other grass types. It grows slowly in the spring, reducing the need for frequent mowing and fertilization.
3
Heat Tolerance
Zoysia grass thrives in hot and humid conditions, making it suitable for southern climates. Its heat tolerance allows it to maintain its lush appearance even during peak summer months.
4
Pest and Disease Resistance
Zoysia grass is less susceptible to common lawn pests and diseases, which reduces the need for chemical treatments and promotes a healthier lawn ecosystem.
5
Aesthetic Appeal
With its dense and carpet-like growth, Zoysia grass provides an attractive lawn that enhances the overall appearance of residential and commercial properties.

Is this zoysia or torpedo grass?
Hello, need some ID help. Located on Long Island NY (apparently older homes came with zoysia?) I have this grass invading my yard from a neighbor. It’s a very thick slowly spreading patch with slower vertical growth than my surrounding cool season grass. This is not in a wet/poorly draining part of my yard. The extensive googling and looking at pictures only left me more confused - it behaves like zoysia but the purple rhizomes with pointy tips are throwing me for a loop thinking it’s torpedo grass. The seed head picture is from last year. Other two pictures are a runner that I pulled from between my pavers today. Too late for grass seed?
Just moved into a new house. We are way too excited and already got to clearing most of the weeds in our yard. Is it ok to plant lawn seed in the next couple of weeks? Can I plant again in the fall if it doesn’t take? We are impatient and don’t want to wait until fall, specially if we just cleared out the weeds! I plan on raking/tilling then laying lawn seed and covering with garden fleece. Bermuda or Zoysia, still deciding. Our yard is mostly full sun. Any and all advice is welcomed, I am very much a beginner. Thank you :) submitted by /u/dressedtodepresss to r/AustinGardening [link] [comments]

Why no seed for Xeon Zoysia? Can you “pre-sprout” it like in a bucket/net setup
Hey all, I’ve been going down the rabbit hole on Zeon Zoysia and I’m honestly hooked. Love the look, density, and overall finish. What I can’t wrap my head around… why are there basically no seeds available for it (or at least none easy to find)? There has to be a reason. I’m the type that doesn’t mind the long game. I’ve got patience. I’d even be willing to try something like pre-germinating / “hatching” roots first, like those setups where people use a mesh/net and a bucket to get roots going before transplanting. Thought that might be a smart way to get ahead of the curve. But I’m starting to wonder if I’m thinking about this wrong entirely… Is Zeon Zoysia not grown from seed at all? Is there a biological or hybrid reason it doesn’t produce viable seed? Would any kind of “pre-sprouting” method even apply here, or is that just not how this grass works? Trying to sound somewhat intelligent here, but also genuinely curious before I go chasing something that’s not possible. What grass sod/seed would you put down in my backyard situation?
If you had about 1500 sqft of blank sand/dirt in Florida what sod or seed are you putting down. This is in my backyard and I want a softer grass that kids can run around in, so I think that eliminated st Augustine. Zoysia from seed plan - 8b
First time doing anything like this so wanted to get some advice on my plan to seed zoysia. I don't get enough sun for bermuda and I don't have the budget to buy sod so i've settled on zenith zoysia seed. My current yard is mostly dirt, sand, and weeds. Nuke current weeds with roundup Till existing soil a few inches deep Water dirt for a week or so to get any remaining weeds up Nuke all the new weeds Once soil temps are consistently above 70, get an inch or two of topsoil delivered Til old soil with new topsoil and level yard Add starter fert (decided on Anderson PGF 16-4-8 as I read it's good for zoysia) Use a hand spreader (yard is only 1600ft) to spread all 2 lbs. of seed Cover seed with peat moss using a roller Water 3-4 times a day until germination (I've read this can take up to 3 weeks for zoysia?) Drop watering to twice a day Once grass is a couple inches high it's ready for the first mow? Does this mean I can walk on it too? Let me know if I am missing anything or doing anything wrong. Appreciate all the help submitted by /u/Trevor301 to r/Zoysia [link] [comments]

Grass seed for Soccer
So I’m fairly knowledgeable about lawns. I have zoysia in my front yard and manage all my maintenance, weed control and nutrients. The question I have is does anybody’s kid play soccer and recommend a grass or seed to continuously overseed for them to train on. I have a small part of the back yard that they have a goal and train on that I want to clean up instead of just cutting weeds low as some of them can be hard and mess us dribbling. I’m in Northeast Florida. submitted by /u/danford6 to r/lawncare [link] [comments]

Zoysia from seed - week 3
Hello r/lawncare I am planting zoysia grass on a lot that used to have a concrete foundation on top of it. It's very sandy soil for the most part. I know it's still early on, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions to ensure the lawn survives dormancy over the winter season in Southern LA. I've been watering the entire lawn about 1/8" per day at 6am (using an Oto sprinkler). There's patches of dense seedlings, and everywhere else the seedlings are spread out (and hard to see in the pictures). I understand that I'm currently in the "root-focus" stage of growth, and they'll grow taller in another week or two. A couple of questions I have: Should I add mycorrhiza fungus to the lawn? Is 1" total water per week OK at this point (sandy soil) Does this progress look OK for 3-3.5 week from seed? Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Trick-Gap7317 to r/lawncare [link] [comments]

Zoysia grass in 7b
TL;DR Is Zoysia grass likely to grow in our yard and will it outcompete all the weeds, or should we do artificial turf? Hey all! Definitely a novice here, looking to replace some sod in the small area behind my townhouse. 3/4 of it gets sun much of the day, and about 1/4 is basically always in the shade (under the deck). We laid sod and couple years ago (I think it was fescue?) and tended really carefully, but it just never fully took and is now just dirt and tons of weeds. Our yard backs to a wooded area, and it essentially throws all kinds of seeds and stuff back there (including tons of trees of heaven). Initially, I wanted to do artificial turf. I have some limitations when it comes to upkeep, so I need it to be minimal, and turf fits the bill. BUT I’m concerned about the environmental impact. A neighbor suggested Zoysia grass since it tends to crowd out weeds and doesn’t need to be mowed as often. We also hope to sell in the next year or so, so maybe the investment in turf wouldn’t make sense. I just want to reclaim that area so my kids can play out there. What would you do? Thanks for any advice! submitted by /u/Overwhelmed-Empath to r/landscaping [link] [comments]

What type of grass to seed?
I live in MD, zone 7a. Finally hired a company to dig out the bamboo in our backyard and install a barrier. Now we have a clean slate and need to put down seed asap to prevent erosion since we live on a big hill. We have zoysia in our front yard that I love but I’d like something a little softer for you backyard. The zoysia gets so dry that it isn’t very comfortable for kids. Any suggestions for soft but hardy grasses that can stand up to kids, some disturbances, and doesn’t require a ton of maintenance? Thanks! submitted by /u/jj246875 to r/lawncare [link] [comments]

Growing Zoysia Grass Plugs (central Florida)
I moved in to this house about 5 years ago, i mow once every two week. In June, I helped a friend with laying empire zoysia sod, took two pieces with me. The pieces were about 18" x 20". The two sod pieces had about 1/2" to 1/4" of soil on them. They I planted sod piece #1 in a bare spot in my backyard, it's doing well. Zero watering or soil amending. Sod piece #2, i cut up in to approx 1.5" squares. I took away about a half wheel barrow worth of soil from the area. I then drilled with a garden auger and stomped the little pieces. I then added one bag of top soil. Another bag of top soil a week later. This area is in a heavily shaded area and was previously covered in large bulbed crab grass and other weeds. I gotta say i am pretty impressed with them. Most of the piece have doubled in size - no watering, no fertilizers. I have mowed it only once since i stomped them in. Just pulled some weeds in the 'plug bed' by hand a few times over this last month. Anyway fast forward to last week - i bought a 2 oz bag of Zeon Zoysia seed from eBay, a pack of seedling trays and a bag seed starter soil. I used a little bit of that seed, i sprinkled maybe 25-50 seeds per cell. The seed trays came with humidity domes, i left two humidity domes on - one off. Any insight on what one would expect from this in the coming days or weeks from theses seedling trays? If these seeds are legit - when would be the time to transplant the formed plugs? I am hoping these seeds are legit, and if they are, i'll buy more seed trays and seed and start growing and planting zoysia grass plugs all over my yard. submitted by /u/TenTwenyDollaBillsYo to r/lawncare [link] [comments]

Seeding zoysia is frustrating. Am I on the right track?
Zone 8a coastal VA, seeded my yard in zenith zoysia, using Pennington seed from local big box store. Having spectacularly failed at seeding warm season grass before, I tried pregerminating, the seeds this time. They received a 24 hour soak, then rinsed them every 12 hours and back into bucket with 2 bricks on the bottom so no seeds were in standing water. I never got to the point where I saw roots beginning to emerge, because a week of rain came up in the forecast. So on day 7 after I started the process, the seeds were mixed with milorganite and fine sand. I used a broadcast spreader on the lowest setting that would work. I got 3 passes, north/ south, east/ west and a spiral. Since then, between rain and irrigation system- the soil has never been dry. I started on May 19, today Is Day 19. Is this just kinda the way it is? The pictures: 1. About 1800sqft with 1.5” screened top soil, on top of a few inches of mostly clay top soil. 2. A Close up of a good area, some areas don’t have much at all. 3. A heaping teaspoon of seed spread onto good organic potting soil. I started soaking this small sample 24 hours before the rest of the seed, so I had a little warning when they absolutely needed to get in there ground. 4. The thing that frustrates me. Just sharing, and I understand why it’s like this. I’m currently undergoing a whole yard renovation with pool landscaping ect. This is a separate area on other side of yard that gets dense shade. I put down annual rye grass seed on the same day as the pre germinated zoysia, this is day 12 and I mowed it 3 days ago. Also, for those that have seeded zoysia, are the tall grass sprouts in the 2nd pic also zoysia? Or some other grass, they were the first to sprout in pot and the area I seeded submitted by /u/Apprehensive_Disk478 to r/lawncare [link] [comments]

Zoysia/Tall fescue mix from seed
Hey all, Would really appreciate some guidance here. I am looking to reseed our back lawn with a more durable grass due to having four dogs. I have settled on zoysia. I’m looking to minimize the length of time we are without use of the backyard so I was considering mixing the zoysia seed with tall fescue in hopes the fescue will get us a usable lawn sooner and the zoysia would eventually take over. Is this feasible or is seeding both at the same time not going to work? Will the fescue just choke out the young zoysia? Do I need to just bite the bullet and wait for the zoysia to establish first? submitted by /u/Arnathis1 to r/lawncare [link] [comments]

My neighborhood just had google fiber installed. They had to dig up part of my lawn to install the fiber. A Beginner’s Guide to Improving Your Lawn This Spring & Summer
-- PLEASE NOTE: While questions are very welcome in the comments, be sure to check the two part FAQ below this post as it gets into many of them! -- Three points of orientation: Make sure this guide pertains to you. This guide was written for those who are growing cool season grasses. What does that mean? Well, there are all sorts of different grasses grown on home lawns but they can generally be split into two camps: cool season and warm season. Cool season grasses include fescue, bluegrass and rye, and are most often grown in the central to northern parts of the USA or in milder parts of southern California. If you live in one of these places, you very likely have cool season turf. Warm season grasses include bermuda, centipede, zoysia, St. Augustine and bahiagrass, and are most often grown in the south and southwestern parts of the country. The differences between cool season and warm season grasses are significant and just like you can’t cook a strip steak and a beef shank in the same way, this cool season plan is simply not going to work if you have warm season turf. If you are unsure what type of grass you have use this guide or the links in the sidebar to identify your turf. Have reasonable expectations. Sadly we have to begin with what for some of you will be a bitter pill to swallow: if your lawn is in really bad shape, following the steps in this guide is not going to take it from a “2” to a “10” by the end of the summer. The reason for this is simple: the time to renovate and truly transform cool season lawns is in late summer and early fall. The goal here is to make big, noticeable improvements and get you ready for fall when you can truly take your lawn to the next level. About me and about this guide. I am a lawncare DIYer. Like many of you I bought a house and then had a realization that I had to take care of a lawn and had no idea what I was doing. This guide contains many of the lessons I learned in figuring things out. It also contains lessons learned from watching Allyn Hane (Lawn Care Nut), Pete Denny - u/gciturf (GCI Turf), Matt Martin - u/thegrassfactor (The Grass Factor) and Ryan Knorr, along with reading this sub and thelawnforum.com and listening carefully to the golf course professionals I know. That said, all of the writing is my own though I owe a significant debt of gratitude to u/SirThomasFraterson and u/Unabomber007 who generously read a draft of this guide and offered thoughtful suggestions and critique. Limitations. This is a free, generalized guide written for beginners. If you want more detail - and at a certain point you probably should - I’d suggest purchasing one of the Cool Season Guides written by either Allyn or Pete. These have far more depth than I could possibly provide in this format. Links + Recommendations. I have no affiliation with any lawncare supplier, retailer or educator. None of the links are affiliate links and I promise you I am making absolutely zero money with this post. I chose to recommend what I did either because I have used these products myself or someone I know and trust has. As with anything in the world, your mileage - both in terms of the products recommended and advice given - may vary. Late Winter (aka Where to Begin): This is where you start. While it is obviously intended for you to complete these steps in February or early March, if you have found this guide later in the season you still want to start here. Every other step will depend on these things being done. Step #1 - Measure Your Lawn. This step is not optional. If you don’t know how big your lawn is there is no way you can apply anything to it as you’ll have no idea how much to apply. There are online tools you can use to get a rough idea of your yard’s size, but I have found they can be off by as much as two hundred square feet. My recommendation is to buy an appropriately sized tape measure or measuring wheel and actually walk your lawn. Unless you have a truly tiny yard, you’ll probably want to divide it up into different areas. To do this take your measurements and draw a small map of your property and identify your particular zones. Treat each area separately. An example - and one we will stick with throughout this post: You have a Front Yard measuring 2000 square feet, a Side Yard measuring 1000 square feet and a Backyard measuring 2000 square feet. Feel free to round off your numbers. If your side yard is actually 1009 square feet treating it as 1000 is not going to make a noticeable difference. Home lawns are not academic research centers. Step #2 - Get a Soil Test. Like the previous step, this is not optional. When you are ill and go to the doctor, he (or she) performs tests before he takes any action. He doesn't just cut you open or prescribe random medications hoping everything will work out. Before you add anything to your lawn or do any work to it, you have to test your soil. You can do this at any point, I usually do mine in February. MySoil is an easy, though very expensive source for soil testing. A much cheaper option is to use your County Extension Office, which is staffed by state university employees focused on local agriculture and gardening issues. Find their site and then look around for soil testing; it’ll be there. (Once you find your office's website, it is worth bookmarking it. It will offer a lot of advice for lawncare that is particular to your state. Some of the advice might be considered conservative by the standards of many in this sub, but it is worth having, nonetheless). How exactly do you prepare a soil test? Here is a good video from Ryan Knorr on the subject. He is using Soil Savvy, another expensive option similar to MySoil, but the procedure will be similar for virtually any test. If you have the time and money and really want to dial things in, I highly recommend that you do a separate soil test for each area you established in Step #1. Step #3 - Buy a good-quality mower, sprinkler setup, broadcast spreader, backpack or pump sprayer and a scale. Lawncare is an equipment-driven hobby and there are tons of things you can buy but these five are are the essentials. Of course if you already have one of these items, only upgrade if you feel that your current equipment isn't doing the job. Mowers. The subject of lawnmowers could be a guide in and of itself. There is a nearly endless number of types, sub-types, brands, options and modifications to consider. However, what matters most is just two things: First, get the right size and type of mower for your property. Just as it would be insane to buy a tractor to mow a 500 square foot lawn in San Diego, it would be equally nuts to buy a manual reel mower to mow an acre in Pennsylvania.
