I just got my car tinted and ceramic coated from a local shop which has a 4.9 stars google rating with over 500 reviews and over 15.2K followers on Instagram and 3 shops so I trusted them but I’m not happy with the tint job and now I’m not even sure if they actually ceramic coated my car or not. So I’m more or less of a clean freak once it comes to my vehicles. I have a membership at my local car wash in my area that allows me to run my car an unlimited number of times a month. Living in South Florida with the harsh weather and elements my car is exposed to daily, I tend to get my car washed about twice a week on average. I add an optional hand wax about every two weeks. I was thinking about getting my car ceramic coated to its entirety - a 2025 BMW 330i. I’ve had the car for 8 months now. My concern is for one, I’m not sure what a good price would be considering I have never gotten it done before. Also, I’m worried about getting the wrong person/shop to do the job and do a poor job or less than the job should’ve been done. These two concerns is why I haven’t been able to just pull the trigger yet. Before my Audi was totaled last year in an accident, I was quoted about $1,800 from a guy at a local shop in my area for the entire car to get ceramic coated. That was the only price I got. Mind you, however, that the paint on that car had been beaten by the automatic washes so there were many paint imperfections that needed corrected. I’m afraid I’m already doing the same to my BMW. I think I’m doing my car good in keeping it clean all the time, but alternatively it runs through the brush car wash so its paint is probably worse than the Audi was. So, what should I be anticipating when asking around a bunch of different shops on a newer vehicle? Are there any specific prices I should expect to hear, and others to completely avoid? How much will guys charge me in labor alone? I’m just trying to gauge what I should expect, if anything at all. Again, the only number I’ve seen was the $1,800. Hey guys, I took my new (to me) car in for a two stage polish and 5 year Gtechniq dual layer ceramic coating, which was pretty expensive! When I first washed the car afterwards, I've noticed that the water is only collecting on one side of the car, and it's almost perfectly down the middle - please see pictures. Does this mean the the ceramic coating has failed, or perhaps one side hasn't been done? The guy was very well reviewed and worked on the car for around 10 hours, so hoping nothing malicious here. For those that wonder if ceramic coating that is applied correctly is worth it. Please see the video of my wife’s car. This car was driven in the rain for 1-2 hrs yesterday. A mix of highway and city driving. Sat outside in the rain from 8AM - 5PM and then was parked in the garage overnight. This is what it looks like without being touched. Yes it needs to be cleaned but not bad at all. Outside of the deeper color and helping you paint keep its shine longer this is another big benefit. Got a quote for a truck normal price is 2500 for a presidential package all ceramic coated inside and outside all mirrors and windows all inside trim included with 3 year coating and brought the price down to 1800 got a good discount but just don’t know if it’s actually worth the price? Hello all. I have a 2023 sapphire black m240i I recently had my car 2 step paint correction with xpel ceramic 8 year coating done. I had xpel ppf on the front hood and bumper only. The rest of the car is just ceramic. The car was essential show room quality. Paint was absolutely perfect. Today I had my 20k service at the dealer ship and I specifically said DO NOT take it through the automated brush wash. Well the idiots did. And absolutely ruined the work I had done which cost me roughly $2600. I am absolutely livid. I immediately told the service rep and my sales rep and showed them. None of the managers besides the used car manager was there and I spoke to him as well. I have to wait till monday to speak with the GM and Service manager because its Saturday and they weren't there. I took videos of my car outside the dealership for proof and my sales rep is backing me up... but still. Its incredibly frustrating and I want them to pay for it to redone by the same shop. What do you think are my chances of getting this resolved? I will not accept them "fixing" it. I will not be happy unless the professional xpel shop who did it fixes it. I was suspicious of their BS claim, but detailing isn’t my area of expertise, so I wanted to make sure I wasn’t being ignorant. Since many of you asked for an update and had additional questions, here’s the full context. On the morning of Thursday, July 24th, I scheduled a ceramic coating appointment through the detailing shop’s rep. I was in the middle of a move, and had just purchased a new Lexus ES350 the week before. I told the rep I was moving out of town on Monday and needed the car back by Saturday. I confirmed that the car could be coated on Friday and would be ready for pickup Saturday in the afternoon. She confirmed in text that it would indeed be ready by Saturday. I dropped the car off Friday at 9 AM and again emphasized in person that it was imperative the car be ready Saturday and she again, confirmed it most certainly would. The next day, while waiting for the pickup call, I got a text at 11 AM Saturday saying the coating was just then being applied and needed 24 hours to cure and asking if I could now pick the car up Monday instead. I expressed disappointment and explained that unless I changed my travel plans, I wouldn’t be able to do that. I told her that she had confirmed twice and that I’d be leaving town on Monday and I could only give them an additional day, so we agreed on a Sunday 9 AM pickup (their not normally open on Sundays). When I arrived Sunday morning, the shop was locked. I called the rep, who said she’d been trying to reach the owner but hadn’t been able to. She then told me to Zelle her personally since she couldn’t get ahold of the boss and would be unable to confirm payment until she got a hold of him and didn’t know when that would be. I asked why I couldn’t just go inside to pay, she said the mechanic there wasn’t authorized to handle payments and this was the only way to get my car back that day. With no real alternative, I reluctantly sent the payment and got the keys. When I got into the car, I noticed the odometer had gone from 81 miles when I dropped it off to 108 miles. That’s when I started asking questions, the screenshots of our full text convo begin from there. As some of you suggested, I contacted XPEL directly. Their warranty team emailed me this: “XPEL understands the importance of taking excellent care of your vehicle. While curing techniques may vary slightly between installers—each having their own tips and tricks—it’s important to note that this is not a standardized XPEL practice. To help answer some of your questions, I’ve included a maintenance guide that outlines best practices and recommendations for care.” I also confirmed by phone that driving the vehicle, luckily, did not void the warranty, but they were concerned about the shop’s practices and said they’d forward the info to their regional distributor. During our text exchange, the detailer rep tried to change the story, claiming the vehicle was only driven after the 24hr cure. That’s impossible based on the timeline. The coating was applied Saturday at 11 AM based on her text. Their shop closes at 5 PM Saturday and I picked it up Sunday at 9 AM. That means the car was driven within 6 hours of application, not after 24 hours. Even if they took it home, it was driven during the cure window. I will point out, I did misspeak when I said they stated they drove the car immediately following the application. What I should have pointed out, is that they drove the car within the 24 hours and likely on the front end of the window based on when the coating was applied and when their shop closed that day. I agree with others, no one’s taking an ES350 on a joyride lol. It was likely driven out of convenience, which is still insane given the liability risk if something were to happen. They drove a brand new customer car without consent and risked damaging it or voiding the warranty on the coating, all without disclosing any of it. I never got a response back from the rep after pointing out the timeline contradiction. I’ll be leaving a review to help others avoid having their vehicles used without their consent. Thanks again to everyone who weighed in and confirmed what I suspected, the excuse they gave was total bullshit. I had my car professionally ceramic coated with XPEL at a local detailer. When I picked it up, I noticed the odometer showed 27 additional miles since I dropped it off. I didn’t expect them to drive it at all aside from maybe moving it in and out of the bay. When I asked them about it, this was their exact response: “The car was driven primarily to help the ceramic coating cure properly. Controlled movement and exposure to natural airflow can assist in the drying and bonding process, especially in humid climates like ours. It ensures the coating sets evenly and performs as intended. We take every precaution to protect your vehicle and appreciate your understanding as we follow the necessary steps to deliver high-quality work.” This doesn’t sound right to me. From what I understand, coatings cure through time and temperature, not from driving around. And 27 miles is a lot. I also checked my Lexus app and the GPS location hasn’t updated since the car was at the shop. Even after I personally drove it 20 more miles, the app still shows the old location. I’m starting to wonder if they disabled something to avoid logging their trips. Is this kind of thing normal or acceptable in the detailing world? Got Ceramic Pro applied on my car by a high end detailer about a month and a half ago. At first the beading was pretty obvious but now much less so. I washed the car only 2 or 3x since (twice with ONR rinseless with a BRS and once with a pressure washer/two bucket method), no other chemicals. I don't have a pressure washer or access to a water source so not sure if this test helps you guys determine the condition of the ceramic - if not I can remake the video and reupload. I try to take good care of my current car, I only do touchless and occasional hand washes, and I use spray wax pretty frequently. Besides having to apply it more frequently, is there much of a difference with a regular ceramic coating over using the spray more often and is it really worth the high price? What was originally supposed to be a fun weekend project quickly turned into a nightmare. I started Saturday and finished late last night. Overall, I'm very happy with the results. However, I did see 2 small high spots this morning that I will need to polish off at some point. Not bad for a newbie though. I think what made this process longer than what it should've been was my own OCD. I wanted everything to be perfect and I believed if I took my time I could get the results similarly to a professional (I perform fabrication on aircraft for work so surface prep,sanding, and applying coatings, etc. is not uncharted territory for me). Everything was going fine until I got the the polishing stage. I did NOT expect it to take me so damn long and I did NOT expect my new 2025 ctr to be riddled with swirls in the clear coat. Not even a 1 step correction could get all the scratches out, although I did get most of them out and my car does look alot better. When I first started, I wanted perfection. It wasn't until 4-5 hours into it, I realized my expectations were unrealistic unless I were to do a 2 step correction, which I had zero desire to take off that much clear coat on a new car. So after awhile a few scratches here and there stopped bothering me. The difference between a hobbyist and a professional is time. A pro could easily get this done in a day. Whereas it took me 4 days to complete the job. 4 fucking days. I had to take PTO Monday. And Tuesday I was able to get a ride to work but only slept 3 hours since I was up all night trying to get this done. I was no longer having a good time. Polishing is a pain in the fucking ass and is nightmare fuel if you have OCD. Oh, and it didnt help that my brand new Griots G9 random DA polisher died after only a couple hours of use. I changed the brushes and tried everything else I could to troubleshoot it. But no avail. So beware of their polishers. They stop working for no reason and are overpriced. I went to Harbor Freight and their polisher worked like a damn charm for almost 1/3 of the price. I used adams advanced graphene ceramic coating which is TRICKY to work with at first. I didn't realize until I already started that it's not recommended for beginners. I had to redo the entire hood and roof because there were high spots everywhere that I didn't see until I took it out in the sun for better lighting. My advice is to absolutely make sure your overlaps are 50% and apply little to no pressure during the coating process. If you read this far, thank you. After how frustrating these past few days have been, this post is therapy for me right now. Would I do this again? Fuck no. Well, not for at least a couple grand lol. I get now why a ceramic coat is so expensive. Salute to all the detailers out there who do this for a living. And it was worth it! Only been about 3 weeks since I applied Adams Advanced Graphene Advanced (from the tiny bottle, not the spray). It took way longer than I anticipated with the strip wash, clay bar, surface prep, then ceramic coat. I was satisfied with my paint so I didn’t polish. Overall it was fairly easy. The ceramic is impossible to see flash or rainbow on the white paint, so I went by feel. I probably didn’t level it enough but who knows. It looks perfect in all kinds of light. The UV light helped when I missed a spot or had a high spot. I did the glass 7 months ago with their glass ceramic. Not super impressed with the glass tbh. Debris still really sticks to it. If I could do it over, I would level with the suede towel and then go over it again with the white plush towel that comes with the kit. Hopefully it’ll last a while. I'm done with ceramic coatings. For myself at least. I was an early adopter of ceramic coatings, and helped a lot of shops to adopt their use, and trained detailers on how to properly correct paint to get the most out of them. I love ceramic coatings for this, because not every customer wants to spend money on paint correction, but the promise of 5-10 years of protection with the addition of brand new looking paint was enough to get even average customers interested and willing to spend significant money. To be clear, I think coatings are fine. They're shiny, they protect the car somewhat better than wax, make cleaning easier, et cetera. But I've never loved them. What got me into detailing initially was buying my first paste wax on my first "real" car. I had no idea what I was doing and scoured online forums to figure out what I was supposed to do. As a result, I ended up learning how to clay my car, and then polish it by hand before applying Autoglym's HD Wax. I loved this wax. My car seemed to magically develop a deep lustre and smoothness that I didn't know was possible. As a result, I loved washing my car sometimes 2-3 times a week, and the nearly meditative practice of waxing every month or so, whether the car needed it or not. And this is the crux of it for me. As a car enthusiast, and as a detailing enthusiast, coatings bring me no joy. They're great for making money, and I suspect those who want an easy solution will continue to enjoy them, but to me it's like the difference between the early 128kbs mp3's and quality 180gram vinyl. Yes, digital is easier and more convenient, but there is always something more special about the real physical thing. I'd love to hear other peoples experiences, especially when it comes to their own vehicles.
