Oak Console Table - My first hand tool build
This is a build that was all hand powered tools with exception of rips with the circular saw. Concept: This is a vernacular console table built with Oak leftover wood harvested about 25 years ago and stored away in a barn loft. The goal was to build something that complimented other pieces of furniture I had built and helped me gain experience with hand tools. For my previous builds I had access to a shop with router table, table saw, jointer, planer, bandsaw, dust system etc. Since then, I moved, loosing access to the shop. I wanted to really push the limits to see what I could reliably build in a small space with only minimal hand tools. Although I don't have any opposition to power tools, I am without a dedicated space at the moment big enough for a power tool shop, I wanted the independence of being able to build furniture projects without having to rely on access to big power tools. For this build I took rough milled aged boards to what you see here all by hand except for 5 rips I executed with the circular saw. Project Learning: Before this build I had very little hand-plane experience. Furthermore I couldn't expect to use a handsaw and arrive at anything approach straight or square. Every cut came with significant apprehension on ending with a ragged cut and off angle. Now, having completed this project, I'm pretty confident I could take rough wood down to just about any vernacular furniture form without access to a power-shop and just basic tools: Tools: Square, Pencil, Measuring tape, Glue, Ryoba, Circular Saw, Jack Plan, Sand paper, finish, Clamps, Vise, work bench and bench chisels. All the above with exception of ryoba could be had from many estate sales- just about every handyman from the generation passing on had these tools- for under 250 bucks and maybe under 100 if you hit the right sale. One of the other big unlocks for me in this project was to learn the basics of maintaining sharp tools. This was another investment made as part of this project and now I am pretty confident in making a chisel or plane reasonably sharp. An eclipse style angle guide and basic 2 surface diamond stone represent investment under 100 bucks. 3 years ago I built a dining room table and child's chair with wood from same tree: Table: https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/13r4463/vernacular_american_trestle_table_my_first/ Chair: https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/13xni23/salvaging_leftover_wood_from_same_tree_as_my/ submitted by /u/_abordes_ to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

What else should I add to this console table?
I recently added this table to the top of our stairs and want to add more to it but not sure what. I was thinking a large unglazed ceramic pot as one item. Caveat: I will not change the artwork, the table, the lamp, or the wall colour. I am only looking to complement what is there already. For items on the bottom shelf, they either need to be heavy or unbreakable. I have two large dogs with tails like weapons. submitted by /u/Salty_Television123 to r/HomeDecorating [link] [comments]

WIBTA if I asked my friend to pay me back for the console table her son broke while house-sitting?
(Second account incase she finds out!) So, for context, I (35F) was supposed to be out of town for a week for my childhood best friend’s wedding. It was a big deal—we’ve been friends since we were five, and I was part of the bridal party, so I knew I’d be gone for several days. I didn’t want to leave my house completely unattended, especially since I have a small garden that needs watering and a few deliveries that were scheduled while I’d be gone. One of my work friends (also 35F) mentioned that her 20-year-old son was looking for some easy work because he hasn’t been able to find a steady job since dropping out of college. She said he was responsible and could house-sit if I ever needed it. I figured it could be a win-win — I’d have someone watching my house, and her son could make a little money. I agreed to pay him $20 a day (keep in mind that means he was being paid 140 dollars in total), which felt fair for the tasks I asked which were watering plants, bringing in mail, keeping things tidy, etc. Before leaving, I gave him a walkthrough of the house—explained what to do, what not to touch, and made it very clear that there were certain things that were expensive and not to be messed with. He seemed polite and promised to take care of everything. Well, he didn’t—obviously. When I got back… my house looked like a frat party crime scene. There were beer cans everywhere, sticky floors, trash bags stuffed and left open, and someone had clearly slept on my living room couch because the cushions were all misshapen and covered in crumbs. At first, I thought maybe he’d just invited a few friends over once or twice. But I later found out from one of my neighbors that there had been multiple parties that week. People coming in and out every night. Loud music, cars parked all down the street, even someone vomiting in my front bushes. So of course, I was absolutely mortified. When I started cleaning up, I realized several of my things were broken. A $60 set of wine glasses, one of my $180 decorative vases, $41 sunglasses, a few of my lipsticks were ruined, and worst of all—my $1,600 console table that sits in the entryway. It’s one of the few “splurge” items I’ve ever bought for myself, and it’s completely ruined. The leg snapped, and there are scratches and dents all along the top, hell even my expensive liquor was slightly drained on it. And honestly? It not repairable. I called my friend (his mom) immediately, and she was so apologetic. Apparently, she didn’t even know he had people over. She said she’d talk to him and make sure he called to apologize, which he did—but it was one of those half-hearted “yeah, sorry, I messed up” type apologies that didn’t make me feel any better. I told him I wasn’t expecting him to pay me back for everything, but that I did want him (or his mom) to pay for the console table, since that was the most expensive item and something I can’t afford to replace right now. But the thing is.. my friend is recently divorced and has been struggling financially. I know $1,600 is a huge ask. Her son doesn’t have a job, and that’s why I even paid him to begin with—I wanted to help him out while getting something in return. So now I feel awful. Because yes, while it was her fully grown up son who broke it, she’s my friend and going through a tough spot right now. I don’t want it to be worse or anything. But consequences need to be paid—I don’t know what to do though. So to all my fellow potato’s that read this, wibta for charging her, and if I would be, what should I do instead? Edit to the post: I noticed that I didn’t add this but the things I listed were just a few things he broke. And the wine glasses were those fancy ones—like they were crystal wine glasses I got for my birthday a few years ago. submitted by /u/Least_Assumption_63 to r/CharlotteDobreYouTube [link] [comments]

Hall Console Table [Mostly Hand Tools]
This project is my yearly challenge to do something as much as possible with hand tools, within reason. It's a hall console table made of ash. The client (my wife) specified that it must be sleek. I found a design in the book pictured, and went from there. (I sought advice on this subreddit about wood movement). I cheated a little and bought S4S lumber, all 20mm. Milling is my least favourite part of any project. It's all 8mm mortice and tenons, done with my favourite chisel, an old picksticker I got for €7 at a car boot sale. I didn't go for the splayed legs, but I did put a small taper on each side of the legs using my bandsaw to rough cut and clean up with my hand plane. My tenon shoulders could be better, my sawing technique is not yet good enough to go right to the line, and my chiseling could use some work. The mistakes are mostly hidden. I will try not to point them out to any visitors Sanded using my ROS, up to 240, and finished with a matt poly varnish. submitted by /u/Halycon365 to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Behind the sofa console table!
Here are photos of my sofa console table project! It spans 10ft and has a receptacle built-in and an upstand and made from maple. I started with sourcing rough-sawn maple boards. I CA glued all the checking on the boards then proceeded to sand 80 then 120 grit. After 120 grit I cut boards to size with circular saw and chamfered the horizontal portions of console with a 1/8” router bit. I then proceed with 220 grit sanding. I used a dowel jig to drill 3/8” x 2” dowels every 2ft to connect the upstand to the console, I decided to not glue the dowels. I stained and semi-glossed the maple with a wet sand in between semi-gloss coats. For the apron I used 2x4’s with maple scraps fastened every 2ft to keep the 2x4’s rigid. I used a forstener bit and oscillating tool to notch pockets for the figure eight fasteners. I used figure eight fasteners every 2ft held with #6 screws. The apron was given slack in the screw for the figure eight fastener to pivot freely. Here’s the console table assembled. All fasteners to maple were pre-drilled. Here’s the electrical fastened to console table. Cutting out the rough-in hole burned through one of my carbide oscillating blades. The junction box was held with #6 screws. The electrical box consisted of a tamper proof receptacle connected to a 14-gauge whip. The electrical components were assembled to mitigate as much liquid and dust intrusion as possible into electrical. To be on the safe side I added a GFCI into the wall plug where console is plugged to prevent electrocution! submitted by /u/Epic-sanya to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Console table finally finished
I finally finished my first console table. It took me a few months using what little spare time I have. I used reclaimed wood, milled them down with a table saw, but finished the joints with hand tools. It's also the first time I've done angles they weren't 90 degrees. It fits nicely behind our sectional so I finally have a place to set my whiskey... Only issue is my wife already posted up in the corner, and I'm not sure she'll ever leave. Let me know what you guys and gals think. submitted by /u/numberheadman to r/BeginnerWoodWorking [link] [comments]
