Hello friends, we're back to reviewing and I'm finally getting around to trying Poesie. I held off for a long time because their EDPs are stupid expensive and I heard lots of general grumbling about the annoying dropper bottles and and unwanted rebrand a few years back. All very valid criticisms! However, I got to sniff Villa Diodati at a meetup and was so incredibly hooked I immediately ordered a 5ml as well as a sample pack. Let's get to it: Villa Diodati: I’m going to go off tangent a bit here, so buckle up. In the indie fragrance community, and especially amongst those who love atmospherics, I feel like we’re usually pursuing the olfactory equivalent of a very specific nostalgic memory. For basically my entire life I've been on the hunt for something that reminds me of my annual trips to the Adirondacks. I want to bottle the smell of the brooding, changeable sky, the tea-dark water, and the damp, loamy pine forests. Although I’ve smelled many an excellent pine (shoutout to Arcana and Pineward), nothing has brought me to that complete ADK experience quite like this scent. The first few minutes of Villa Diodati smell exactly like surfacing from the lake and smelling the trees on the shore. I’ve seen many, many perfume houses claim a water or lake water note, but nobody has actually delivered on it except for Poesie. I didn’t even think it was possible until I smelled this! The balsam and rosemary are pungent, herbal, and perfectly complementary. When I smell this I can close my eyes and practically feel the lap of the water on the shore and the dappled sunlight filtering through the pine boughs. And then, it quickly dries down into...vanilla? I don’t know why the vanilla is there. It’s not bad, but it’s not really what I want. I would pay infinite money to keep the lakewater/rosemary/balsam party going for ever and ever, but that’s just not in the cards. My husband says this smells “like aftershave” and I am inclined to agree once the vanilla comes out. Man, what a rollercoaster. Notes: pungent wild rosemary, fresh balsam pine, crystal clear lakewater, dry, and dark vanilla[8/10] Village Bakery: When wet this smells almost like cinnamon maple pancakes, which was delicious but unexpected. Once completely dried down though, it smelled more generically dough-like. Like just raw dough. Not yeasty and delicious, not in the middle of benign baked, but just kind of like uncooked dough. Nice in the bottle but just didn’t work out well IRL. It’s actually a bit gross and sticky on me as it wears, and takes on an unpleasant likeness to BO. Usually I do a few wear tests before reviewing, but I could only manage one wear test for this. Even the memory of it is...pungent. Notes: stacks of delicious Japanese milk bread [3.5/10] Madar: I get why people like this a lot, and I also understand why folks say this smells like potpourri. The dried rose petals are so, so, potpourri-coded for me it’s all I can smell for the first 15 minutes. Mentally if I can get beyond the dried rose petals then the creamy base is quite lovely. I don’t think I can though because the rose petals are winning! I have such a vivid memory of crushing those tiny dried rose petals in a neighbor’s bathroom potpourri basket circa 1997, and then guiltily trying to wash off the evidence from my potpourri fingers. My husband says this smells like “my grandmother’s silver polish” whatever that means. If they made a version of this without the rose petals, I would be all over it! [Edit, apparently they HAVE made a rice pudding scent, so now I might have to buy it.] Notes: comforting, creamy basmati rice pudding flavored with orange flower water, saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, dried rose petals, and sugared pistachios [5/10] OYSTER!: Straight out of the bottle this made me recoil for a second because of how much it smells like acetone. Maybe a sharpie marker? It softens a bit into something that resembles a briney note. Decidedly savory and interesting, but very very faint. Within a half hour it’s just a touch of salt on my skin. I was kind of expecting more from this one. Notes: grey musk, ocean brine, bitter cucumber, a twist of lemon, elemi resin, and angelica [5/10] Library Ghost (Freebie): This was a free sample, so I don’t want to be too harsh, but it’s not something I would ever choose for myself because I’m not a marshmallow girlie. This just smelled like a straight up dusty marshmallow, with a sticky, cloying vanilla dry down. Not for me. Notes: studious marshmallows surrounded by books, ink, and polished wood [3.5/10] Soft: It’s not exactly rice, but it’s vaguely starchy. Perfumed rice, maybe? I feel like a pure rice note should be bordering on savory, and this isn’t really giving me that. Soft, gently sweet, and uncomplicated. My husband denied being able to smell it all, even directly after application, and finally said “maybe it smells like patchouli.” On the dry down, I’m getting a phantom rice-y playdoh note. I don’t hate it, but it’s a bit of a miss from what I wanted it to be. Notes: basmati rice soliflore [6.5/10] Amaterasu: In the opening of this the sandalwood incense is doing a LOT of heavy lifting and it reminds me of an expensive craft store owned by tasteful ex-hippies. I can almost smell the upscale wind chimes in the far corner and the tastefully curated section of locally made ceramic mugs. My husband unhelpfully adds that “it smells like soap.” The drydown smells like slightly powdery, perfumed almost-rice/playdoh, and when I put it elbow-to-elbow with Soft I find the dry downs to be very similar, except for an additional yellowish floral note from Amaterasu. Notes: golden sandalwood incense, rice milk, bright cardamom, amber, dry wheat, and sunflowers [6.5/10] Full Moon at the Temple: There’s that beautiful lakewater note again! This time it’s underneath the yuzu but it’s light, lovely, and elegant. Very quickly though it all dries down into an herbal yuzu soap, and then ends in a nondescript, powdery, sweet vanilla situation. My husband says he “can’t smell anything” and then, when pressed, said “well it smells like something, sort of, but not much.” This one could’ve been really good but it fell a bit flat on the finish. The powdery rice base of this is very similar to Soft and Amaterasu. Notes: fragrant white rice, shiso leaf, bitter yuzu zest, hinoki wood, green tea, and lakewater [6.5/10] Well, I guess it's no exaggeration that Poesie's base is incredibly distinct and, at least to my nose, smells like playdoh. It's a bit heartbreaking because Amaterasu, Full Moon, and Villa Diodati have such gorgeous openings! I've actually never smelled a house with such a distinct base - the closest I can think of is Sorce which has a very "cookie dough" base for some of their gourmands. I think the base is just a dealbreaker for me. Has anyone ever experienced this with Dr Browns or maybe have an idea on what could cause this? Tonight while washing our daughter’s bottles I noticed that two of the vents have this weird orange discoloration on them and ended up just throwing them away. My first ever BPAL lunacy event and it was so wonderful! I'm still swooning about it a little, to be honest. I had a marvelous time there, everyone was so kind and welcoming, and I got to connect with a fellow BPAL fan while trying to find where it was located lol. If you're reading this (and you know who you are, then, hi! I was so happy to chat with you today :)) It was very quaint in there, although there was a fellow customer that was chatting it up, so it wasn't quiet in there. It was so nice to hear others talk about BPAL in person! I had a great time listening to them talk about their experience even thought I was personally preoccupied with the scents. On the display there were nail polishes (as pictured on the left), and on the same display there were some Haute Macabre collab scents available. Behind that and to the right of the display were atmosphere sprays, hair glosses, and lotions. And in front, of course, were the oils. There was a mix of weenies, GC, yules, and lupers/shungas. Mainly from this year, but there were some past LEs in the mix as well. They provided physical lists to flip through, with scent names, notes and prices provided in alphabetical order. Besides my wallet, I also brought along a little notebook to jot my thoughts down. Although, I wish that I brought a skin safe marker along to note which perfume I sampled on my arm, and where (wasn't very convenient doing that with a pen.) Because it's so very easy to get caught up in the huge display in front of you. The most recent offering they had available were Milk Moon items. (Sorry to the friend that asked me for single scent note impressions!!) In total, I tried 19 scents, only two of which were retests, so 17 new scents! Despite my best efforts, I was caught up in the moment, and my thoughts are sort of jumbled, as are the scents on my arms, so I'll try my best to decipher them. (Scents weren't open mouthed, they had wand caps for easy testing. Except for the Haute Macabre collab ones, they had roller balls.) Jareth (Ethereal lilac fougere and gleaming leather with ti leaf, tonka absolute, white musk, and oudh.) A soft cologne like scent. I found it to be clean, and maybe a little soapy. It had a slight sweetness to it, maybe from the lilac? But it doesn't really read as lilac to me. This one changed dramatically, and a lot of leather came out on the dry down. Because of that, I didn't end up buying it. Theodosius (Earl Grey tea leaves, a white fougere, jasmine leaf, pearlescent white musk, and vanilla bean.) BERGAMOT! BERGAMOT! BERGAMOT! There was a HUGE wave of bergamot in the beginning. Overwhelmingly citrusy, so bergamot haters please beware (I LOVED it though.) Not much fougere that I can discern, and no jasmine either. There's just a tiny hint of sweetness from the vanilla, and it dries down to a sort of powdery, dusty facsimile of an earl grey. Skipped out on FSing this one. Dorian (A Victorian fougere with three pale musks and dark, sugared vanilla tea.) Dorian, Dorian, Dorian, alas you break my heart Dorian. It was so sour it was off putting in the bottle, and it was tannic and sour on skin as well. No sweetness to speak of. Between Jareth, Theo, and Dorian, my #1 is Theo, #2 is Jareth and #3 is Dorian. Theo and Dorian are most similar, and I found that Jareth, despite the similar notes, wasn't comparable to the other two. Smut (Three swaggering, smutty musks sweetened with sugar and woozy with dark booze notes.) An astoundingly accurate notes list, it reminded me of Snake Oil's sweet musk but without any of the spice and bite. Was slightly boozy but you won't smell like a liquor cabinet. Hiss and Hearse (A dribble of Dorian and a squiggle of Snake Oil, delicately stirred with a moss-crusted muddy shovel.) Dirt and green grass (noticeably NOT freshly mowed grass, as I hate that) but most assuredly it was mainly the moss crusted muddy shovel hitting me in the face. There was a little snake that slinked past me, but Dorian was no where to be seen. Gentle Spring (Crushed dandelion stem, a riot of pansies, warm bare skin, sheer vanilla silk, cherry and apricot blossoms, wild strawberries, wild roses, sun-warmed grass, and a gust of white clover honey.) To be honest, I forget where I tested this on my arm (womp womp) But it was sour in the bottle? And on skin it melted into something softer, and floral. And it was most assuredly pink smelling. I didn't really catch any of the more fruitier notes. La Dame Aux Pamplemousses (Billowing bulbous blobs of grapefruit marshmallows.) Less grapefruit and more marshmallows, and when I say less I mean none at all. Just a sugar bomb on me, boo hoo. Grumbolch's Salt (Pale crystals poured from a chipped glass jar, emitting a brittle whiff of bitter almond and cinnabar, swirling, undissolved, into sugar-clotted lemonade.) This one was so sooo interesting to me. It was half part almond, and half part lemonade (and it really did smell like lemonade) in equal measure. Now it smells like salted lemons on my finger. I was considering FSing this one, but I wasn't in love with the dry down. [I am however, very delighted that the lemonade had enough back bone to stand up to the almond, despite that note usual steamrolling everything else on me!] Gloomily, Gloomily (Soft grey musk, pink thistle, lavender ash, tea leaves, pale iris, grey lilac, and rain-soaked moss.) Another one that got caught in the whirlwind of scents I've tried and I have little remembrance of. I know this one has earned its praises, but it wasn't very memorable to me. I remember it smelling like laundry, but not quite soapy. More like clothes in the middle of being washed? With a light hand of soap. (They did NOT, have donkey's tail available to test.) Is She Y'know? (Sweet 13-year aged patchouli, peru balsam, white oakmoss, spikenard, bourbon vanilla, sugar cane, and a sprig of lilac.) Smelled different compared to the one I've tested before, less full head of lilac bush and more herbal smelling. Wasn't nearly as sweet either. I also passed on it because of that. Dahlia (Sugared amber, orchid petals, and vanilla chiffon spiced with smoked cardamom.) Smelled exactly, like how it did before but a little stronger. Gentle cardamom with vanilla to support it. I like it better this time around compared to when I tried it last year. I considered getting an FS. Mouse's Long and Sad Tale (Vanilla, two ambers, sweet pea and white sandalwood.) I couldn't really smell much of anything to be honest. It was vaguely floral and sweet? But I couldn't make much out of it. Black Butterfly Moon (Shadow-dappled tuberose and black orchid, buffeted by crumpled violet leaves and ink-dipped tea roses. A glint of obsidian musk slinks beneath, woven with scorched vanilla resin, dusty myrrh, and the faintest touch of crushed blackberry skin.) Honestly? Cantaloupe. I asked a fellow Lunacy go-er to sniff it and make sure my nose wasn't broken and it was confirmed, yup, cantaloupe. Fruity, but it didn't lean into berry territory for me. Juliet and Romeo (Crushed red rose and night-blooming jasmine unfurl over Verona stone warmed by summer dusk, sugared violets and bitter orange peel steeped in pale cypress smoke, with a single thread of myrrh rising like a whispered vow in the dark.) Oddly enough it smelled like air to me. Like... their Smoky Moon? It smelled like recirculated air, which was, interesting, but not at all what I expected. Milk Moon: (Milk and White Musk) Not quite lactonic or foodie, it's quite mellow. The musk is the same, or very similar to the one that's in a previous lunacy offering, Jasmine Rice and White Musk. If you've had that, but are more inclined to milk scents, you might fancy this one. I don't know how to describe BPAL's milk scents, but it's definitely their accord. Like straight up milk? But without sweetness? Seule (Amber-bedewed skin musk, golden honey, vanilla cream, and a trickle of sugared lemon.) Ah, I was so happy to see this one on display but alas, it wasn't meant to be. I thought it would be more sweet vanilla cream and a kiss of lemon but it's a straight lemon punch to the face. Like a warhead candy, almost? Very, very little sweetness, and certainly no vanilla or cream. Oh well, better to be disappointed sampling rather than blind buying! Persephone's Ascent [Haute Macabre] (A glorious blend honoring the benevolence of spring: Sandalwood-Infused Vanilla, Vines of Pale Spring Blossoms, Honeysuckle Nectar, and Sweet Cream.) I was also, super duper excited to try this one, but the rollerball didn't disperse much so I couldn't smell it very well :( From what lingers on my arm it's a gentle floral, but I sadly can't discern much else. What a shame! What a shame, I was so looking forward to this one. Mummies of Mexico [Haute Macabre] (Mummies of Mexico City contains notes of church incense, ornate gold, old lace, and dust. A sacred, secret scent, recalling residual whispers of incense settling into the ancient, forgotten dust.) The lemon variant of frankincense, and lots of it. I'm partial to all sorts of frankincense and this is no different. Hate that I have trouble distinguishing the dry down on my skin though. Mary Shelley (The scent of absinthe, lightning, stormclouds, and laudanum crashing through a veil of soft Victorian perfume.) An absolute sleeper hit, there was something in here that hooked me immediately. I had to reapply to my art to get a good reading for it. There was something so... alluring about it I suppose? It's not one that I'd usually go for from the notes list. And it was one I sampled by chance (as I did watch Del Toro's Frankenstein very recently) and it was my sleeper hit! Gentle, alluring absinthe melts into that veil of soft Victorian perfume, and the lightning, storm clouds and labdanum are in the background. I went home with a bottle of this beauty :) (So glad it's a cheaper GC offering!!! I got off easy in that regard!) All in all, I adored my time there and would absolutely love to go again! I've gotten the boxes from Babylist, Target, Amazon, and now Walmart. Walmart's actually may be the best one if you're going off sheer amount of useable items and size (not just a bunch of coupons or advertisement books like a lot of the others seem to give you). It took way longer for Walmart's to come than any of the others (edit: I checked and it was 5 weeks 0_0). I got a very cute Carters onesie, two pacis (one Bibs and one Nuk), another Dr Brown's bottle, vitamin D drops, Sudocrem, 3.4 oz Johnson's baby lotion, sample of dapple dish soap, water wipes sample pack, TWO 24 packs of Huggies wipes, more Aquaphor, and then like 4 different sample diapers. NF uses dapple bottle soap and it’s been DESTROYING my hands. It started on one finger, burning red skin that started to flake off. Now it’s spread to both palms and is so painful. It’s looking like contact dermatitis or something. I would totally ask NF to change soaps, but my contract is up after the holidays and they have an entire stock of it. I’ve been using disposable gloves to wash but sometimes forget or am just in a rush! Been resorting to lathering hand lotion and wearing cotton gloves to sleep. We’re considering buying the Momcozy Kleanpal Pro. LO has decided over the past few months that she doesn’t like the taste of dishsoap anywhere near her bottles, or my pumps, so we’ve been handwashing everything with dapple. We were originally using a dishwasher basket too, but she was rejecting bottles that had anything to do with that as well. Not even just silicone parts either- everything. Anyways, she starts daycare soon and the thought of handwashing 5+ bottles and pump parts every day gives me the ick. My reservation with the bottle washer is, is she going to taste whatever the tablets are and start rejecting bottles again? Hi! I am a breastfeeding mom and recently took a 3-day, 2-night solo trip without my baby. I pumped the whole time I was gone and kept the milk to travel back with. Pumping and milk storage requires a LOT of cumbersome equipment, and I am a reforming overpacker. However, I did not want to feel like I was heading out on the Oregon Trail, so when I was preparing for the trip, I searched here and r/onebag to see if anyone had advice for light packing with breast pump equipment. I didn't find any posts -- so I wanted to share what I did! Constraints and concessions: I flew Spirit and did not want to pay for a checked or carry on bag. Breast pumps do not count toward your baggage allowance, so I was able to bring a 25L personal item sized backpack (clothes, toiletries, tech) and a tote bag (breast pump stuff) without paying extra. Breast pump equipment bag: Madewell foldover transport tote Everything else: Patagonia 25L Black Hole backpack I was traveling for a concert and knew I would want/need to pump at the show, so I brought stuff to enable me to pack for THAT within a fanny pack. I stayed with a friend at my destination so had access to a fridge and sink for milk storage and pump part cleaning. Photo descriptions: Breast pumping gear. I spent a lot of time trying to really dial down into what was most needed and I feel like I did a pretty good job! I pre-lubed the flange which is a move I thought was particularly genius haha. I ended up just dumping the milk I pumped at the show because I felt it was probably a little too warm for a little too long (made it back before 4h but it was more than 80 degrees outside), but I was proud I was able to make it all work in this small bag! 7) Milk storage: I traveled with two Ceres Chills and two Nalgenes. I flew to my destination with one Ceres that I used for travel day storage (added ice to outer chamber in the airport) and one empty Ceres; I filled one Nalgene with socks/underwear and put it in my backpack, and used the other Nalgene as my travel waterbottle. Once there, I emptied and cleaned both Nalgenes, and used them for pooled milk storage in my friend's fridge. I used one Ceres for storage if I was out and about during the day. For travel back, I filled one Ceres completely (took out inner chamber - Ceres guidelines say you can store pre-chilled milk for 12h like this), 3/4 filled the outer chamber of the other one and then used the remainder of the space for storage during travel (added ice to inner chamber once I was through security). Ended up traveling back with a little under 55oz, I believe. I again cleaned the Nalgenes before traveling back, and used one for water, and one for laundry (pictured). 8) Patagonia 25L Black Hole backpack (old version) containing all my clothes, toiletries, cords, etc. Laundry Nalgene is inside. Side pockets hold other Ceres Chill and other Nalgene 9) Everything fit under the Spirit seat! 10) Pumping in a Mamava pod at the airport Thoughts: Breastfeeding is a wild ride and can be quite emotional. Thanks to some advice from the r/breastfeeding sub, I spent some time before the trip emotionally preparing to not bring any of the milk I pumped home, just in case. The mantra: I am pumping to avoid mastitis and maintain my supply. Any milk that makes it home is a bonus. My baby got a mix of formula and thawed milk at home with his dad I spent a lot of time debating also bringing a wearable pump (I have Elvie Stride and Eufy S1 -- like them both ok but I don't get consistent output with them and so knew I couldn't rely on them for the full trip). I ultimately decided not to bring one in the interest of space. I had a flight delay, and while it ended up working out that I always was able to find a comfortable place to pump with sufficient privacy for me (and I had my nursing cover as backup), I did sort of regret not having the option for a wearable. I did not end up using the milk storage bags, but they were pretty small/light so I'm glad I had them just in case. If I'd needed more milk storage, I would've used the bags in the Baggu lunch box with a ziploc of ice. I pumped in an airport lactation room, a Mamava pod, several friends' living rooms/kitchens, and a large bathroom stall at the concert I wished I'd brought Lysol wipes or similar for the pumping rooms/pods I used pump wipes only for the travel home, and otherwise washed my pump parts after every use, either air drying on my friend's counter or drying with the microfiber towel. Spirit was surprisingly cool about the extra bag. I was anxious so made sure it was only breast pump equipment in there -- on the way out, when asked I told the gate agent I was traveling with a breast pump and she was like "okay!" and waved me right through. My husband constantly critiques my bottle washing, which is ironic because I still end up doing most of it. I pull apart all the bottle parts in a tub in the sink and fill with soapy, hot water (use the Dapple bottle soap) and let it all soak for 20-30 minutes sometimes longer if I’m busy doing stuff. Then I use a bottle scrubber and touch every surface and rinse under hot water in the tap, and then use the Phillips sterilizer every time. It can hold 6 bottles so I wait until there’s 6 dirty bottles in the bin and then do them all at once. Does this seem sufficient? Hello, we have a 5mo. old. We’ve been using Dapple Baby dish soap since the beginning to hand wash and then sterilize bottles and pump part. I am not kidding, every single one of the 5 dapple baby dish soaps have had broken pump mechanisms. They work fine to start then, after about 1/2 full, they start to fail and no longer pump. I have a Dr.Browns microwave sterilizer (I don’t have a dishwasher btw). I’m reading mixed opinions online about how often to sterilize things and I guess it also depends on if the baby is preterm?
