RE:Lights flicking
A dodgy dimmer switch, or the use of non-compatible LED bulbs, can certainly cause flicker - it's almost inevitable. But, plugging in your phone? That's weird. Where do you plug it in to? Which bedroom light flickers - ceiling, wall, or bedside lamp (plugged into a mains socket)? And, what type of bulbs are fitted? And when were they changed to this? Is the flickering a new phenomenon?

Incompatible dimmer switches?
I recently had a kitchen remodel done and wanted premium electrical switches instead of the contractor-grade ones that were included in the bid. I chose three-way dimmer switches from Legrand, mostly because I wanted a sliding dimmer and also because they are available in an oil-rubbed bronze finish that looks and feels really nice. There are 3 such switches in one central location in the kitchen, and 3 non-dimming switches that control the same lights in a separate location, as I was told that having two dimmers in a 3-way circuit wasn’t possible. The contractors electrician spent several days trying to wire them to my lights and had nothing but trouble. He said the switches were bad, so we ordered new ones only to have the same issue. He replaced them with switches by Lutron and those didn’t work either. After several days of this and some other issues I had the contractor bring in a different electrician, who seems much more competent. He corrected the issues we were having that weren’t related to these switches, but he also couldn’t get the Legrand switches to work as we intended them to. He was able to get the Lutron switches to work though, and said the Legrand’s must not be compatible. How likely is this? The Lutron switches are the wrong color and just feel really cheap. I would like to make the Legrand switches work if possible. The each switch is powering 3 LED bulbs, that specify that are dimmable and well within the wattage range that both manufacturers require them to be. What would be the problem? Edit: the switches that are in and working are Lutron Maestro series. The ones we like better are Legrand Radiant series. Edit 2: by not working, I mean the dimmers wouldn’t work. submitted by /u/Important-Sun-7894 to r/AskElectricians [link] [comments]

New ceiling light bulb on dimmer won’t fully turn off or flickers
This is my first time posting on this subreddit and I thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice. My bathroom ceiling light is on a dimmer switch. The original bulb burnt out, so I bought new bulbs to replace it (pic 2). The new bulbs are labeled as dimmable, but: They flicker when I turn the dimmer up. They do not turn off completely when the switch is in the off position; they stay slightly on/glowing. I tried an older bulb from a random lamp in my house, and that one also does not turn fully off. It just stays very dim when the switch is off. The bulb that burnt out was fine so I’m not sure why this is happening with the new bulb(s). Thank you for your input as I am stumped. submitted by /u/oswegocaker to r/AskElectricians [link] [comments]

My project for this weekend, super excited to replace my dumb toggle switches and bind these to lights in each room + make use of 15 mmwave presence sensors
Waited two months for these switches (and that's not even all that long compared to many it sounds like 😅) but very happy they're here finally. These are the newer presence sensing dimmers from Inovelli. The physical quality of these switches is great. Comparable to Zooz and Lutron. I have about a hundred lights in my home, all Hue RGBCCT, including several silicone diffuser LED strips (BTF FCOB strips in diffusers connected to Frankensteined Hue Lightstrip Plus controllers and powered by Meanwell LED drivers), BR30s, E18s, G30s, some wall fixtures like the Econic and Dymera, and of course a bunch of A19s. These switches will control them all. I already rarely ever touch the physical switches due to how heavily automated my home lighting is at this point, but these will replace a bunch of Hue dimmer switches mounted next to blocked-off dumb switches (2nd pic) and will be a lot more visually clean and visitor friendly. I already have reliable whole-home presence detection with a few dozen LD2450-based presence sensors wired in all over, but these will add some redundancy and I'm going to configure the indicator lights to turn on when someone approaches each switch and to be off otherwise. Should keep me busy 🔷 submitted by /u/4kirezumi to r/homeassistant [link] [comments]

Are there any Zigbee in-line cord switches without a relay or dimmer?
Hi! I can put smart bulbs into ceiling lamps and smart switches on the wall, then use decoupled mode and bind any switch to any bulb. That way I still have functioning light switches but I can also automate things. Now I'm looking for the same functionality with these in-line switches for desk and floor lamps. I tried this Samotech cord dimmer and it works fine, but it's a bit bulky and I don't actually need the relay and dimmer that's built in. It also has no decoupled mode. All I need is a button to bind to the smart bulb. I just want it to get power from mains instead of a battery. Thanks! submitted by /u/corruxtion to r/homeassistant [link] [comments]

The Hue Dimmer Switch V2 is a massive downgrade compared to the V1
Seriously, what was Signify thinking when they designed the 2nd version of the Dimmer Switch? The V1 is perfect, looks and feels like a classic glossy light switch and adapts well to existing switches in modern as well as historical homes, plus the buttons are easy to understand for everybody (including guests who aren't familiar with Hue lights). The V2 on the other hand looks and feels like a Temu copy of the V1: Cheap plastic, washed-out grey color of the button prints, confusing layout for guests who have no idea what the "Hue" button does or think the brightness toggle is a touch/swipe sensitive area and no dedicated OFF button which is a pain in the ass when you want to make sure a dimmed down lamp is really off and not on again by pressing the I/O button on the V2 (and I know you can re-purpose the Hue button into an OFF button in the app but d'uh, that'd be even more confusing!) Sorry, I really don't wanna sound like a hater here and usually I love the Hue sytem including its upgrades and newer products, but when it comes to the Dimmer Switch they really messed up the V2, so I'm currently only buying the V1 when I need another switch and I also hope the V3 will be like the V1 again. What do you guys think y'all? submitted by /u/ItsIrinaBitch to r/Hue [link] [comments]

Do almond/ivory light switches and outlets ALWAYS look bad?
I have gotten used to how they look, but my first impression was definitely "Ew, they look discolored from age, dirt, or possibly cigarette smoke." I'm wondering if everyone has the same impression. They are definitely clean, to be clear, and functioning. The home builders went all in with the bone/almond/ivory fad of the 90s. (I really wish the fad skipped the bathrooms..) I am glad they are Decora style, at least. There are probably 50+ outlets and switches, so replacing them all would be a lengthy and costly process. We are currently replacing light fixtures (also functional and well-made, but so so ugly) and we have to update our dimmer switches. We are debating making the full switch to white, but I am on the fence. Would you replace them? (Side note: Not sure what the vision was back then, but idk what people were thinking. I'm guessing they thought it was a subtle, dirt hiding color. I cannot confirm because I was a baby when this house was built. It reminds me of the recent trend of painting trim and doors a darker, creamier color than the walls, though.) submitted by /u/annamv22 to r/InteriorDesignAdvice [link] [comments]

My gameroom is complete after years in storage
Storytime: I finally have the gameroom I've wanted for years. It took many, many hours and late nights but it's finally done. My wife and I bought this house last year as we outgrew our last place (kids). This room needed a lot of work which was primarily done by me. I dont have a background in anything related to renovation/contracting but I do have the internet and have had some help with the flooring from my father and FIL. Down below I linked an album showing the progress made over the past year. DIY stuff: For flooring I laid down high traffic vinyl planking across the entire basement (~850sqft) over an underlayment which rests ontop of tile. For paint, my color scheme was inspired by the most legendary game console ever, the NES. The walls reflect the two tone greys along with the semi-gloss black and red accents. The floor trim was measured, cut, and installed by me (very satisfying to get this done). The shelving I measured, cut, primed, and painted from poplar wood since it's a stronger than pine which tends to bend. Poplar is a great stiff wood and is cheaper when compared to oak. I got the idea for these style shelves from youtubers Saturday Morning Gamer and Morts Garage. The lighting is slim LED lighting that has a "nite mode" at the flick of a switch. I have never done electrical beyond changing a fixture so this was a fun learning project. I also installed a modern lutron dimmer for dimming on both lighting types. All the cardboard and fragile things are lifted well off the ground because I got some toddlers that love to grab things. I decided to go with custom shelves because I didn't want to have those cheap media tower shelves that sit on the floor. My house is also a raised ranch so I had to figure out how to make shelves from scratch to go above the permanent shelf that surrounds the room. https://imgur.com/a/uMVwHYK Now that the DIY stuff is out of the way... For games, I only collect what I used to play back in childhood and ones that interest me. I'm not into collecting full sets or games that are "valuable". I have about 900-ish games and I'm mostly content. Looking to add more boxed games but i'm in no rush. I always wanted a gameroom that is practical hat is meant to ENJOYED. I will never understand the museum mentality where everything is in glass cases with no where to sit down. I try to beat as many games as I can each year, thanks to inspiration from the "games we played" videos from MyLifeinGaming on YouTube. I'm currently having a blast playing Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS. I recently 103%'d Donkey Kong Country 3 on SNES, then before that beat Resident Evil 2 and 3 on Gamecube. The CRT is a 32" Sony trinitron KV-FS120 which I have a Wii, PS2, and OG Xbox running through a component switcher. The SNES and N64 are on S-video, and the NES is on composite. The 55" Sharp LED has an HDMI switcher for Xbox One, 360, PS4 Pro, Switch 1 and 2. Everything is run through a surround sound receiver and sounds amazing. The wiring and organizing for this was a pain FYI. submitted by /u/suicidalkoala to r/gamecollecting [link] [comments]

Edison bulbs making dimmer switch hot. Am I risking a fire?
We moved in about a month ago and I’m slowly making some changes to some peculiar design choices the previous owners made. I replaced a light fixture with 3 bulbs with this one that has 6 60w Edison bulbs. The dimmer switch says it is rated for 700w and for incandescent lights but I notice it and the faceplate getting warm to the touch after an hour or two. I am only at 360w, nowhere near 700w. Is this ok or am I risking an electrical fire? submitted by /u/All_Hail_Dionysus to r/AskElectricians [link] [comments]

How many of these recessed lights can I use on a dimmer switch?
I want to put 6 sunco 5000k LED downlights in a room and run them all off a single dimmer switch. The lights say "14W Equivalent to 100W" and the switch says "LED 150W" and "Incandescent / Halogen 600W". My first thought was that my LED load would be 6 lights at 14W each = 84W and the switch can handle 150W so I can put 6 lights on the switch. But when I look it up I see some instructions saying the switch rating needs to be divided by 10 and some don't mention that, neither give any explanation as to why. Neither the instructions for the LEDs nor the switch seem to address this clearly. I'm completely confused. What switch ratings need to be divided by 10 and why? submitted by /u/notscammed to r/DIY [link] [comments]

Please help me wire 3-way light switch!
I have a chandelier over a staircase with: - a switch at the top - a dimmer at the bottom The dimmer slider broke off so I bought replacement. First weird thing: none of the small breakers seem to work, so I have to shut off the main breaker (perhaps it is wired through multiple small breakers... I don't know). Second weird thing: the wiring in the instructions don't match what I see. Wiring of the switch at the top: Uses two black and a red. The white is in there but not used. Wiring of the dimmer at the bottom: Uses one black, one red, and one white (and obviously green/earth) How should I wire the dimmer? Should I rewire the switch too to make it look more like the diagram? https://ibb.co/hyfw3MH https://ibb.co/tDt1WgB https://ibb.co/FKW83JG FYI, the chandelier uses LED bulbs, so not much current compared to the old chandelier that was there when we moved in. I would really appreciate your help! EDIT #1: House is 1980s Chandelier worked fine until the dimmer downstairs degraded mechanically and became finicky I have a voltmeter, and measured downstairs dangling wires against Earth and obtained the following after toggling the upstairs switch: Red / White / Black Switch up: 0V / 120V / 14V Switch down: 44V / 120V / 0V https://ibb.co/z4hdzHW So I'm thinking to wire the new dimmer as follows (per diagram markings): Bk: white YL: red (hopefully joining the red on the switch) Other YL: black Makes sense? What's the worst thing that can happen? EDIT #2: I found the breaker... No idea why I couldn't find it before... Just one (20 Amps if I recall correctly). I wired according to my first edit, and everything works perfectly. 👍 Thank you everyone for your help and time! 🙏 You are all amazing! 🙌 submitted by /u/EnvironmentalOwl3729 to r/DIY [link] [comments]

LPT: When wiring up a bathroom, install dimmable lights and light switches. They are MUCH easier on the eyes for those middle of the night events, and can double as a night light when you have guests.
I did this to our main bedroom years ago, and have installed them in other bathrooms since then. In many cases, it's as easy as replacing the light switch. Of course, this doesn't work with fluorescent bulbs, and I'm not at all sure of the state of the technology with respect to LEDs. Edit: This earned gold!?!? No kidding! When I turn down the dimmer switch on my lights, do I actually use less electricity, or is the difference between the bulb's nominal wattage and the actual wattage vented as heat by the dimmer?
There are three bulbs in the light, each nominally 60 watts, and I turn it down to roughly the same brightness as 3 40 watts. I assume I would notice the 60 watts of heat coming from the dimmer, so I'm guessing it actually uses less electricity. Edit: Thanks for all the responses and upvotes!
