i have an echo show and to play youtube videos on it, its annoying, i have to physically touch the screen to play them. the description of this says it can play youtube videos, does anyone know the process? is it cumbersome? ideally i just want to "cast" it to my tv, like how my old chromecast used to work

Been playing around with an old Echo Show 5 and managed to get it running as a Home Assistant dashboard. Using the Voice Assist Companion App + a custom dashboard, and overall it works pretty well as a small kiosk display. That said, the microphone is still pretty bad, I haven’t been able to get reliable voice control out of it, so I mostly treat it as a touch interface. The bigger issue for me was how it looked. The default design just doesn’t sit well in a clean desk setup, so I ended up designing a minimal case to make it feel more like a proper object instead of a smart speaker. I got myself an echo show 8 gen 3 out of a great deal over fb market place, and honestly I'm beyond disappointed. I don't know how people like this stuff that much. (I didn't knew about lack of yt / yt music integration) Anyways. Since I have a bit more time I'll build a custom alternative. - Display: 10 inch touch display from amz. - Raspberry Pi 5. Main features: - Youtube / youtube music integration - Idle mode: (Idk, pictures, calendar preview / weather) - Chatgpt voice integration (I don't know if someone already made this) - Basic tasks: Calendar event creation / iOS Notes integration - reolink camera integration (ideal, not a hard pass if not) Does that sound too complex? I'm planning to move out of dakboard in favor of this, There a few videos around but I don't know how much I want to invest myself into them without looking alternatives. I’ve been satisfied with my small echo show 5 devices for a while. I don’t expect a lot, and it delivers- large clock face, voice control of many smart home devices and features, some news headlines flashing on the screen, minimal ads. Been happy with the Alexa+ AI boosting the voice control ability, though not perfect, it’s been good. Last week, I had an eBay seller cancel my order for another show5 at the same time I found I was eligible for a 50% off promo on the show11, great, so I got it. As with many other people on this sub, I can say it’s underwhelming at best, it’s actually outperformed by my older gen show5 honestly. Though I’m not ready to give up on it yet because I know almost all my gripes with it are capable of being corrected in future software updates. I know that’s no guarantee to happen soon or at all. List of observations & complaints with the Show11: Majority of the time it’s showing me this empty screen, as in 1st photo attached to the post. Clock/date/weather in bottom left corner, too small, and totally empty rest of screen. Oddly enough, they’re not even filling that empty space with ads! (Great!) For that matter- it hasn’t show me ANY ads at all yet, in the week I’ve had it set up. Also great, just curious. The widgets screen, with 2-3 panes, would be nice if it was the default screen, but I can’t get it to stay on, no matter how I adjust the settings menus. Widgets 1st screen only allows for 2 panes + a “discover alexa+” panel that I can’t get rid of, sometimes that panel is full screen. I don’t need it at all as I’ve already learned Alexa+ features with my other show devices since summer. Can’t get rid of them. As with other people’s posts, I’ve noticed the Alexa voice is louder than the default setting for other system sounds. For me it’s not a big deal because I don’t play music or radio on the device. Settings menus not as complete or thorough as on my older smaller show5 devices. Silly that this product represents regression when it could simply just copy over all the functionality from the older/small show5 and it’d literally be better. Since I’m not in a hurry and I’m ok with the money spent (only due to the promo I found) I probably won’t return it, and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that many some month this year they’ll make some updates to make this a better product. submitted by /u/fatblast42 to r/amazonecho [link] [comments]
