I made a "wreath" for my front door with a clear umbrella hung upside down by the handle--on a Valerie Parr Hill hook. Ed has written a very cathartic piece on his substack today. I'd recommend reading it. I love this quote: ‘You can’t tell people to go vegan, what about the people in Africa who don’t have access to plants?’ ‘You can’t tell people to go vegan, what about indigenous people who rely on subsistence hunting to live?’ ‘You can’t tell people to go vegan, what about the person living in poverty who works three jobs, has no spare time and lives in a food desert?’ Funnily enough, it’s never these people who vegans are debating veganism with. It’s also not these people who are on Instagram and TikTok getting outraged by comments made by a celebrity. Instead, vegans are speaking to people who can go vegan but don’t want to, so instead these people appropriate the situations of others in order to justify why they go to In-N-Out Burger. Here is my original farm before auto planters. Getting good as to when to hold the hoe button and letting off is still a problem as you see me break rails….but I harvest, with hat, 2 rings all level 20, and kelpie ball I am pulling like 6k total crops. Full run took 4 min 20 sec with mentioning some rails and re-hoeing a space. I think that just like faux fur has nearly completely replaced animal fur, cellular and plant based meat will replace dead animals. Synthetic faux fur was introduced in the 50s, but it took until 2014 to start seeing a dramatic collapse in real fur. Faux fur was just "not realistic enough" for most of that time according to people. However, as technology progressed, permanent progress was made and the war on fur is probably the greatest vegan win in history. With faux fur, there were moments of progress, followed by moments of regression. In the early 2000s, the fur industry boomed despite faux fur. A lot of people say that the current expansion of the meat industry and the shrinking size of plant based alternatives show that vegan alternatives failed. Hover, that ignores the fact that progress often comes with backlash. What can we do as individuals? I really love the Corpo Plaza apartment from Cyberpunk 2077, so I decided to model my new home after it! 🥳 (My first requirement for the designer was that they must have played 2077, lol) 1) This will be a 70-square-meter basement, mainly serving as the master bedroom. However, it will also be fully equipped with a bathroom, a tv area, a workarea, and a small kitchen. 2) There will be solar power and a rainwater recycling system to ensure self-sufficiency—just in case there's a zombie outbreak on the ground. 3) I'm planning to avoid using any real wood in the renovation, relying entirely on faux wood and artificial plants. This aligns with the Cyberpunk theme where real plants are rare, but people still insist on keeping fake ones for show. Mood Spoiler: ok for OOP Meme Spoiler: well that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast. Original Post: September 2, 2024 Before I begin English is not my first language, so apologies for typos, bad grammar and punctuation. I’m also on mobile and using a throwaway just in case. So last Friday night my (24m) friend (we’ll call him Peter) celebrated his 28th birthday. His coworker (that is what he refers to her as) “April” offered to organize and host the party. The dress code was as she put it “Your gothic best” - Peter loves anything morbid and macabre so it would fit his taste perfectly. Now I prioritize comfort over looks, which leaves me dressing mostly in scrubs at work or sweats and hoodies when I’m out and about. Hence April decided to remind me multiple times in increasingly condescending tone to “follow the dress code”. So I did just that. I wore a black velvet trouser and waistcoat set with a white 18th century men’s shirt (a “pirate” shirt if you will). All of these items I made completely myself: from drafting the patterns to sewing the shirt completely by hand and adding an embroidery moth across the back of the waistcoat. Now, to the party itself. I ended up arriving later than most people due to being held up at work longer than expected. I warned both Peter and April about it: Peter said it was no problem at all, but I better show up and April left me on read. So I arrived 40 minutes late greeted April, congratulated Peter and gave him his gift. Moctails were drank and pleasantries were exchanged. Over the course of the night I got a lot of compliments on my outfit and my craft skills were a topic of conversation several times over the evening - it also didn’t really help that when someone asked me where I got the suit or shirt from Peter would loudly tell then all about how I made everything myself. I remember being spun around a couple of times so people could look/ touch the embroidery in the back. Everyone had a good time, or so I thought. Over the weekend April and her friends ended up bombarding my phone and any social media that they could find with absolutely nasty messages. How I was an attention seeker, how desperate I came across, how I absolutely ruined the party April had been planing for weeks, how dare I steal attention away and overshadow Peter and April. You get the idea. I feel like I’m going a bit insane - overshadowing anybody was never my intention (especially my friend at his own party) and I don’t think that I did. But all of these comments are making me rethink my choices. So am I the asshole here? I really need some outside perspective. Relevant Comments: Peter is behind this: I doubt that it’s the case. Know the guy for 10+ years and he never had a problem with people “overshadowing” him. He is not insecure and if he’s got a problem with someone’s actions he’ll say it. He wouldn’t send his coworker’s girlfriends to harass a person on his behalf. Commenter: NTA. April has a thing for Peter, and sees you as a threat. She's going to find ways to criticize you and tear you down no matter what you do. OOP: I guess it also didn’t help that Peter kept his hand on my back for most of the evening and when he got absolutely wasted put his face in my hair. Commenter: So maybe it's not just April's imagination that you are a threat to her attempts to connect with Peter. OOP: I think the biggest threat is Peter being aro/ace and the way April behaves, not me Commenter: Could he possibly be demiromantic? Because Peter’s behavior that you’re describing present as a little bit more than platonic. Keeping his arm around you, smelling your hair… those are often actions (though not exclusively ofc) exhibited by people towards a paramour (or crush) of some degree. And yes April is the problem. OOP: According to him, he is aro/ace. And he wasn’t smelling my hair more like rubbing his face on the top of my head. He says it’s because he like how my hair feels (he plays with my hair often enough and when he gets a little too drunk he face plants into it - though he did it mostly back when we were in uni). Knowing him it could just be a texture thing The others liking the outfit: At some point I ended up with like 4 very drunk people rubbing the moth’s body ( I made it from faux fur) and by extension my back with their fingers. Was a weird experience to say the least The outfit: I had help when it came to drafting the suit from someone who actually knows what they are doing lol. The shirt was made from a bunch of squares so no problems there. The embroidery is all split stitches and faux fur for the body of the moth. I really made it sound to be much more impressive than it is. OOP is voted NTA Update (Same Post): September 3, 2024 (Next Day) Update: This morning showed Peter the post and all of the messages from April and co. Never heard him be this angry. Said he’ll “deal with them”. Turns out April is a pathological liar and had been telling everyone in the office that Peter and her are in a relationship, but are keeping it low key. She also was taking pictures of him every time she walked by his office and showing them to her friends as “proof”. So her friends thought that I was trying to steal her man. They aren’t even coworkers- she just greets clients at the front desk at the firm Peter work at. Peter ripped her a new one, their boss (April’s uncle) ripped her a new one, the coworker she lied to ripped her a new one. April ended up throwing a tantrum, police were called. The results: April is currently on a 48hour hold. Peter is moving to work from home full time. Had a debate with a friend about the ethics of vegan leather which in reality is just plastic. I argued it causes more harm to generations of organisms. It doesn’t break down, it causes micro plastic issues. It’s impact on the environment is just exponentially worse then real leather when you put into perspective the issues that come with plastic. To those arguing about toxic ways to process leather, yes of course! But there are also sustainable ways to process it too - unlike most vegan leathers. Real fur and leathers can be sustainably processed, and has been done by indigenous native peoples forever.. While the process of making leather by no means is perfect, it has less of an impact when done correctly, and it lasts so much longer and I purchase it frequently second hand. Edit: vegan leather has a short lifespan. In general it is frequently made in poor quality and discarded more quickly which contributes to wasteful fast fashion practices. None of my vegan leather goods have held up to the test of time. My second hand leather goods have been trucking along for 20 years now. So to those who argue that the leather production is more harmful - if I have a leather item that lasts 20 years vs this non-leather good that lasts barely a year, is that cycle of production when you buy it more frequently cancel out the good that users claim it to have ? Edit: a lot of alternative leathers that are not straight up PVC/Plastic, like mushroom leather, cork leather, etc is laminated or finished with some form of PVC or Pu process. Most alternative leathers contain a high percentage of plastics. Even companies that claimed to be 100% free of plastic was found to contain polymer plastic or even banned substances. polyester/PVC/PU or any other plastic petrochemical used in synthetic materials is toxic and also causes huge environmental damage as well on top of not being recyclable and not sustainable. A study found that vegan leathers was made with PFAS, a notorious toxic substance used to water proof materials. It’s been recommended that people AVOID indoor faux leather furniture because of PFAS and off gassing of VOCs. The solvents and chemicalswhen manufacturing faux vegan leathers are toxic. Different Studies just on synthetic leather also found extremely high levels of VOC pollutantsin the manufacturing process. There has been a study that predicts in 2050, the ocean is projected to contain more plastic then fish. A case study of synthetics saw that it released an average of 1,174 milligrams of plastic microfibers when washed. The study on the impacts of microplastics is an ongoing and well documented as a toxic phenomenon. More controversially, a study found that real fur was more sustainable than synthetics due to their longevity. Nothing that contains any form of plastic and has a short shelf life, can truly be considered sustainable. This is a hot take and love the discussion below! Keep em coming! Maybe I’m wrong but maybe I’m right, having tried vegan alternatives from high end to low, I have not found one that lasts as long as my second hand leather goods. Edit: it’s a debate, and welcome that a lot of you got hot and bothered but it’s important to practice mindfulness and ask questions. Is this vegan leather that’s 100% PVC/PU truly less harmful or just as harmful? Vegan leathers that contain low percentage of plastics means that it a un-recyclable and ends up in the landfill when it is no longer useful. Did you know that vegan leathers like cork and cactus or other plant leathers are bonded together using plastic? Even though this fake leather good is not directly harming an animal, it actually IS harming more organisms and environments a lot longer with short lifespan plastics and chemical pollution - the very ethics of it being vegan ends up backfiring. At the end of the day we need to transform buying habits into opportunities to shape an environmentally conscious market. When we prioritize durability and reduce our consumer habits over convenience or false promises, there is a path toward a healthier planet. I don’t buy new and don’t support the leather industry but I certainly don’t automatically believe that vegan leather is a sanctified alternative that it has been made to be. In fact, it’s part of the problem of wasteful consumption and plastic pollution. My go-to choice will forever be: second hand! Final edit: people accusing me of being an Anti-vegan bot - I find that amusing. There is a real issue here of a greenwashing/false narrative being made with vegan fur and leathers. Just because something is marketed as vegan doesn’t make it better. These alternatives are often deceptively advertised and We should as a conscious consumer question it, call companies out and make decisions keeping that in mind. If being speculative and conscious is reason enough to accuse me of being anti-vegan, then by default just being alive means you’re one as well. We as a society need to recognize that. Veganism and sustainability can exist together but when you refuse to listen to certain issues you are refusing to make it better.
