AITA for installing a camera in my room to see if my mom is lying to me?
This is a repost sub. I’m not the Original OP (OOP) OOP: u/King_Jake200 Published on: r/AmItheAsshole Story is: CONCLUDED Story timeline Main Post: April 15, 2026 Final Update: May 11, 2026 Main Post April 15, 2026 AITA for installing a camera in my room to see if my mom is lying to me? I (19M) and my mom (49F) have had numerous fights the past few weeks. Most of which are on the same topic. That being her going into my room and looking around without me knowing. Basically, every time I would leave the house for work or anything else, I would always leave my door fully closed, but would come back to it open. Also, I would be incredibly positive that certain things had been moved around or straight up gone. So naturally, I’d ask my mom if she had gone into my room. She would always say no. Now, maybe the first couple times I could play it off and me forgetting to close my bedroom door. But once it stated happening multiple times a week, I knew that wasn’t the case. So, yesterday I went out and bought one of those Bluetooth surveillance cameras. At this point, I was positive she was going in my room behind my back and then lying about it. I just say wanted proof, because I knew this would just continue happening otherwise. This morning, before I left for work, I made sure the camera was working, closed my bedroom door completely, then headed out. At around midday, I got a notification on my phone that the camera had detected some motion. So I pulled it up to view the recording. Wouldn’t you know it, there was my mom going threw my drawers, closet, and desk. She was even grabbing certain things and tossing them out into the hallway. I closed the video feed seething, making sure I saved it first, and planned to confront her first thing when I was done my shift. When I got home, I immediately asked her if she had gone into my room. She said no. I responded by pulling up the video and holding my phone in front of me so she could see it. Instead of apologizing, she exploded. She screamed at me for installing a camera in her house without her permission. I responded by demanding an explanation for her going in my room. She insisted that she had a right to as my mother. She began questioning certain things in my room, to which I said it’s none of her business. At this point I was done. I stormed off and went to my room. Within the hour, my phone started blowing up with messages from family, all siding with my mom, telling me I’m insane for putting up a camera. I kid you not, the entire family is on my moms side, except my dad. Unfortunately my dad can’t stop this himself, as my parents split up a yeas ago and he isn’t allowed in my moms house. I swear I’m doing nothing wrong here. Like, it’s my only space in the house where I keep my things, relax, and do my own stuff. Or am I just completely out of my mind? AITA? Extra Information: I have never stolen anything. Not from stores or other family members. I have never had a history of drugs or smoking/vaping. The things I saw from the video of her taking from my room have been these: A notebook, a pair of sneakers from my collection, a few pairs of my paints, some plastic cloths hangers, my second bedside lamp, and old pay-checks from my work. I also don’t pay rent. COMMENTS Puzzleheaded-Alarm81 Ask her what she's looking for? Seems like she's trying to find something? OOP I can’t get a clear answer from her. She just goes in a series of loops of denying, I’m your mother, and repeat. It’s very infuriating. But I literally have nothing to hide. No drugs, no alcohol, just nothing. veronica-volt NTA. You have a right to your privacy. HOWEVER... your mother owns the home you have a room in. I suggest you either save up to leave, or have a lockbox/safe to keep whatever is precious to you, hidden away. There is very little I can recommend since you are technically an adult and it is legally her home. Unless she threw away something expensive and not illegal to possess (drug paraphernalia for instance), you can't exactly call the cops on her. If you are paying rent, then you could ask for a contract with privacy stipulation and a key lock on the door, but given how everything has been blown up, I don't think your mother will give way. Parents use housing as a form of control, so really the only move is to leave and threaten low or no contact. What was thrown away? OOP From what I could see in the recording, she threw one of my notebooks, a pair of my many shoes (I have a collection), and weirdly some plastic cloths hangers. I also have no clue where they ended up. Not in the trash for sure but my moms room has a lock on it so checking there is out of the question. XeticusTTV NTA in anyway. You are and adult and have a right to your privacy. Do you pay rent or are living at home for free? OOP I live there for free right now. I know how lucky I am to not have to pay rent. But who knows if she’ll just randomly change her mind. brokemillionaire572 Can you move in with your dad? OOP I absolutely can and that’s probably what is going to happen. fl0werg1rlll NTA at all. shes the one snooping AND lying about it, you literally just gathered proof of what was already happening. the only reason shes mad is bc she got caught not bc the camera is some grand violation "i have a right to as my mother" yeah no, youre 19 not 9. and the fact that she was throwing your stuff into the hallway?? what was she even looking for. her exploding instead of apologizing tells you everything family piling on is classic, they always go after the person who exposed the problem instead of the person who caused it. youre not crazy. only thing id say is start thinking abt how to move out long term bc this dynamic isnt gonna get better while you live there OOP I’ve talked to my dad about this. He said I’m always welcome at his place and can spend as long as I want there. I’m probably going to his place, and I’m considering permanently. angel9_writes Show your family the video and ask them explain how that is normal and acceptable. How did she spin to them? Can you look into living with your dad? I'd start planning a way to move out. OOP I showed all of my family with video. Literally no improvements there. They say the camera is inappropriate or still hit me with the “she’s your mother” bs. And yes, I can move in with my dad if needed. Although at this point it’s likely. She wasn’t backing down to begin with and given the rest of the family (minus my dad) aren’t either. CONSENSUS: Not the A-hole Main post updates - made over 1 week period Update 1: Over the course of the week, I’m going to start moving things to my dads place. I’m also not telling my mom about it until everything is gone. I appreciate you all making me realize my mom was overstepping a lot. Update 2: I did what many of you suggested and checked my credit to make sure no money went magically disappearing. I’m pleased to see that nothing was gone, but that still didn’t stop me from locking it. As for as I know she doesn’t have any information on it, as the paystubs don’t actually have my card number or any information for my account, just the money I was payed over a certain period. Again, thanks to all of you who replied! I greatly appreciate all of you! Update 3: Moved my first couple things over to my dads. Lucky my mom wasn’t home when I did that, so it was really easy. I will continue to do this throughout the week. Update 4: I can no longer view the video feed from the camera. I just get a “unable to connect” pop-up. I don’t think I need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure this out, although I won’t know for sure until I go back tomorrow to grab more stuff. It was still in its normal spot earlier today when I went to grab stuff. Update 5: Sorry for the long wait on the next update. I wanted to stay away from the post for a bit just to clear my head. I have moved over a lot more things to my dads. Also, I have decided that I’m not going to move everything. Some things just aren’t worth moving. My dad said he’d help me buy some of the things I won’t move over. Oh yeah, and the camera is gone. Not in the trash, like straight up disappeared. I’ll just let y’all thoughts run wild on that. I’ll only update one last time, which is when I’m officially at my dads. Again, I greatly appreciate every single one of your support. Final update - after 26 days May 11, 2026 Final update: AITA for installing a camera in my room to see if my mom is lying to me? At my dads now y’all!!! I actually moved a week ago, just didn’t get around to update this post. My mom has tried to call me around 3 times a day, but I always decline the calls. I’m positive she will try to play the victim and blame me somehow (she has done that before over other things). But yeah, I feel much better at my dads. The room at my dads actually has a lock on it, so I don’t even need to worry about privacy. Not saying I don’t trust my dad, because I absolutely do! Again, all of your support over these past few weeks was greatly appreciated. I wish I could give you all a big hug rn lol. But this is last you’ll hear from me on this post. Take care everybody!!! AIO for not wanting to give my step daughter the room I finished renovating?
In 2017, my husband and I bought a house. Initially, Susan (now 16) was assigned to "room A." However, after a week of living there, she started complaining that she could hear every sound from our neighbor, who was partying a lot at the time. She also didn't like that her window faced a forest, and besides the neighbor's house, all she could see was darkness and trees in night. We ended up moving her to "room B." Room A has been empty ever since, turning into a bit of a storage room. At the end of last year I decided to take care of it and, using only my savings, I did a huge renovation - replacing the windows, soundproofing the walls, etc., etc. I also bought new furniture, painted the walls, laid a carpet, replaced the lamp, etc., etc. Now it looks like a very cozy library/office/living room. And I love it. But Susan isn't happy, and as soon as I started renovating, she started demanding that I give her the room back. Suddenly, she started claiming that her own room was too small (it's bigger than mine and my husband's, and the same size as our other two children), that she hated that all she could see through her bedroom window was a brick wall, and that it wasn't fair that I'd taken a room "for myself" that had its own walk-in closet and so on. My husband is on her side, but I think it's unfair. My husband has two rooms in the basement to himself, one he converted into a gym and the other into work office. Children (7F, 12M, and Susan) have larger rooms than us, and much of the garden and main living room are converted for their needs. Furthermore, neither my husband nor Susan's mother paid a penny for the entire renovation. I did everything myself. So I told my husband that if he cared so much, he should give Susan one of his rooms, but neither he nor Susan liked the idea, and now they're both mad at me. submitted by /u/Bulky-Scale-7830 to r/AmIOverreacting [link] [comments]

Master Bedroom in Our Forever Home
My fiancé and I bought and moved into our forever home a couple of months ago, and I’ve been working on combining our stuff and styles. Still things to do and add in the master bedroom, like swapping out the white wall plates for black, and adding a long wood shelf to the wall above the headboard for some plants and art. I’ve always loved history, historic homes, architecture, art, and design. So getting to live in such an incredible home and make it personal and beautiful is one of my lifelong dreams. I’m really happy with how it’s coming together. The bed and nightstands are from Thuma, he had it in his previous place. It’s a great bed, but we might replace it with something a little less MCM in the future. The brass lamps came from somewhere like Home Goods, and they each have two lightbulbs with separate switches…which means that at night I can switch on the red lights. The carved wood piece by the mirror is a monk’s bench from about 1849, and is a Jacobean revival. I got an incredible deal on it. Fireplace dresser and rug are from Amazon. Agate lamp from the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show. The jersey duvet cover is from West Elm, the Tiger pillow is from a local boutique, the patterned quilt came from Target, I think. Wallpaper is The Gardens of Jaipur from Mind the Gap. It’s hard to get a truly representative photo of it…it’s much more beautiful, subtle, and playful in person! submitted by /u/UrbanDurga to r/interiordecorating [link] [comments]

My dog has developed a completely unexplainable ritual where he has to carry something in his mouth to greet me at the door every single time I come home and if he can't find anything he will stand there visibly panicking until he locates an acceptable object and I genuinely don't know what he think
I need to document this because it has escalated to a level I did not anticipate when it started eight months ago. It began small. I'd come home and Oscar four year old beagle mix, operates primarily on instinct and enthusiasm would grab his rope toy on the way to the door. Cute. Endearing. I assumed it was coincidence. It was not coincidence. Over the following weeks the behavior became unmistakably deliberate. Every single time I came home Oscar had something in his mouth. The rope toy. A sock. A tennis ball. A dish towel he definitely took from the kitchen counter. Once, memorably, a single uncooked piece of pasta that he had located from somewhere I still haven't identified and am choosing not to investigate. I started timing my arrivals against his preparation window. If I opened the door quickly he'd be caught empty mouthed in the hallway, and what followed was genuinely one of the more distressing things I've witnessed a dog spinning in a tight circle making urgent eye contact with every surface in the room, radiating the specific energy of a person who just realized they forgot to bring a gift to a party and is desperately looking for something, anything, to present as an offering. Last Tuesday I came home to find him standing at the door with one of my slippers. Fine. Normal Tuesday. But then I went to the bedroom and discovered he had clearly been unable to find the slipper quickly enough, had grabbed it from under the bed, and in the process had knocked over a small lamp which was lying on its side on the floor surrounded by evidence of what appeared to be a brief but urgent search operation. He broke a lamp because he needed something to give me when I came home. I've looked this up. Apparently some dogs carry objects to greet their owners because they're so excited they need to do something with their mouths and it redirects the energy. This is the scientific explanation. The scientific explanation does not cover the panic spiral. The scientific explanation does not cover the uncooked pasta. The scientific explanation does not cover the lamp. Oscar has decided that arriving at the door empty mouthed is simply not something he is willing to do and he will dismantle the house if necessary to honor this commitment and I respect it even though I now keep a basket of designated greeting toys by the door specifically to prevent further structural damage. Does anyone else's dog have a ritual so specific and so non-negotiable that you've just quietly restructured your home around it? Because I need to know I'm not alone and also that the pasta thing was a one time event. submitted by /u/Glittering_Ear_9904 to r/Pets [link] [comments]

We need to remember this sub is about kindness and support.
I wrote the statement below on a now-deleted post today. It is a gentle reminder that kindness is free. "Please be kind to others who are on this thread. We are all at different stages of life and wealth, and sometimes health that shapes our living spaces. Kindness is free, and on top of that, it balms your soul and lifts others who are struggling." If you saw the post about her bf in a princess bedroom, she was open to advice. She had a lovely brass bedframe that was painted white, with princessy white and pink bedding, a cute princessy lamp on her night stand and fabric panels on her ceiling. She was proud of what she had achieved so far, but was open to advice. Nowhere in it did she ask for snarky, bitter or flat out mean comments. But she got them, in droves. A lot of women on this sub are struggling. Divorce, breakups, job loss, abuse, and physial or mental illness is something that can strike anyone without warning. AITA for telling my boyfriend not to treat me like his secretary
This morning, as my boyfriend was getting ready to leave for work, he asked me a succession of questions (Do you have a USB-C cable I can borrow? What am I cooking tonight? Do we have beef? Is it going to rain today?). He was in a rush and I was having breakfast at the table, from where I can reach the under-counter fridge. After the ‘do we have beef’ question, I just shrugged like I didn’t know and opened the fridge so he could see inside. He went ‘okay, cool’ from across the table and then asked me about the weather. I said ‘I don’t know, I’m not your Siri.’ He went ‘I’m just asking you a question’ and I went ‘You’ve asked me lots of questions’ and then something like ‘people ask their mom or their secretary things like this’. He got annoyed and said I was being weird, then left saying ‘you’re just angry cus I asked you to turn off the light in the bedroom’ (we disagree over what counts as ‘wasteful’ use of electricity - I don’t think having one small lamp in the other room lit so I can see where I’m going when I walk in there in twenty minutes is wasteful, he does). This was all sort of joking, but I could tell he was annoyed. For context, we’ve been together over six years, we moved in together nine months ago, and we’ve spoken many times before about gender roles/division of labour/partner expectations, including in couples therapy. I know he has good intentions and that he was in a rush. I could’ve answered his questions and told him later to please check these things for himself and not leave the mental load up to me. On the other hand, these are the moments where I feel it’s most productive to call out the dynamics I want to avoid. AITA for being snarky and telling him in the moment? TL;DR Longtime boyfriend asked me four questions in a row as he was rushing out the house and I told him not to treat me like his secretary, which he thought was weird and unreasonable. submitted by /u/SignalDay2587 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Me [23M] with my girlfriend [22F] of 4 years, I think she is cheating on my with our roommate
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/chuckitaway- Me [23M] with my girlfriend [22F] of 4 years, I think she is cheating on my with our roommate TRIGGER WARNING: Mentions past infidelity, false accusations, anger issues, paranoia Original Post Nov 25, 2015 My girlfriend and I have always had a lot of fun together, she is my best friend and the absolute love of my life. I planned to propose this Christmas, already have her fathers blessing. Recently I noticed her acting differently with our roommate, who is also one of my oldest friends. He's known for being a womanizer, always has different girls leaving in the same clothes they had the night before. I came home from work and they were quietly whispering in the kitchen, it sounded like a serious discussion, and when the door closed I swear I heard her say 'Shh! He's home' and when I walked into the room they shot apart. It could have been paranoia on my part I guess, but then last night when we were all sat watching some stupid reality show that she loves, she was on her phone the entire time. His phoned buzzed and I saw her name on his screen. They were texting while we were all in the same room. That can't be good can it? How do I bring this up? Do i confront her? Him? Do i need to sneak for evidence? tl;dr: Girlfriend and roommate were texting while in the same room. Tried to deny it and hide it from me. I smell a rat. RELEVANT COMMENTS inspctrgdgt Really? Your mind jumped to cheating? 'Cause mine jumped to "Christmas surprise"... ~ mr_shush You've got some circumstantial evidence here. It certainly could be bad, but it could also be nothing. Christmas is coming up - maybe she's working on a surprise gift for you? Talk to her. A ruined surprise is a small price to pay for preserving what sounds like a good relationship. ~ DoubleDickedUrChick It is a Christmas surprise......"Surprise, I am cheating on you!" ~ [deleted] Why is it the first thing that comes to mind is that she is being unfaithful to you with the roommate? I think that area needs some more exploration. Has she cheated before? How does she treat you? Has anything changed from how she used to treat you? It is really a big jump to accuse an SO of cheating on you, especially with no background information. I have acted in a similar way with my boyfriend's male friends (two of which were roommates) and I have never cheated on my boyfriend. I was acting secretively because I had a suprise for him and they were in on it. Update Nov 27, 2015 (2 days later) Thank you to anyone who replied with advice, etc. I really appreciate it. As one redditor rightly guessed, I have been cheated on before. It was one of those, after I found out and ended it, it turns out some of my friends had noticed and never bothered to tell me. So now i worry I look for the signs a bit too much. She's never give me a reason not to trust her, until this whole roommate thing came about. I'd like to clear up a few points: When he first moved in, she didn't approve of his 'promiscuous ways', she was worried about lots of different girls having access to our home when we're not there, and while she made her feelings clear, they still remained civil. Stayed out of each others way, small talk, etc. He told her his only rule for sleeping around is that everyone involved had to be single. He's a strong believer of 'bro code', which makes this harder to swallow for me. She has never made me feel the need to snoop, she charges her phone on my nightstand, instead of her own because hers is full of books and a lamp. if she had something to hide, she wouldn't leave her stuff so out in the open would she? After the other night, she left her phone on my nightstand as usual and pretty much went straight to sleep. I admit, I tried to look. her password had changed, which shocked me a lot. she only has a password to stop from butt-dialing people. everyone knew her password, she's a very open book about stuff. I got so angry I couldn't sleep, this is another red flag right? But I couldn't exactly wake her and demand her new password could I? without giving it all away. I fumed for ages, got about two hours sleep. Last night is where everything went wrong. She messaged me, saying she was on her way home and she'd meet me there, did I want anything specific for tea? I said steak, she said can you pick up this and this from the store on your way home, I said yes, see you later. Still angry and hurt over my failed snooping attempt the night before. I get to the store after work, knowing she was home, and when I went to pick up what she had asked for, they had ran out. So I decide to ring her to see if there was any alternative, or to just leave it. There was no answer. I rang again, no answer. My stomach was in knots at this point. I ring my roommate, no answer. stomach doing backflips. I rang the house phone. No answer, so something in me snapped and I rang over and over, let it constantly ring until one of them picked up. She eventually answers, sounding out of breath, [another red flag to me]. I was so angry at this point i snapped at her saying where the fuck have you been? she claims to have been in the shower. I ask where the fuck is he? she claims to not know, the house was empty when she got home. I don't believe her, and say I'll be home in twenty. I gave her an incorrect time, so if they were up to something I'd catch them in the act. I was home within five, and when I got there she had got back into the shower. He wasn't home. Her phone was on the table, so I guessed her password again and again until I disabled her phone. I was so angry I didn't even care. I banged on the bathroom door and told her to get out, we need to talk. She came out, wrapped in a towel, eyes worried. I demanded to know what was going on. She said she had no idea what I was on about. I told her to unlock her phone, because I know they are up to something. She started to get upset and begged me not to do this. She said I was ruining everything. Sounded like an admission to me, so I called her a slut and said if she didn't show me her phone right now, I was leaving. She started crying, unlocked her phone and threw it at me, then went to our bedroom and shut the door. Instead of following, I started reading. Well reddit, half of you were right. It was a Christmas surprise. Our roommate works at a sports shop, she had arranged for me to get a whole new football kit, not just for me, but for my entire sunday league team. She had been asking the guys their sizes, and messaging them to my roommate so he can keep them to one side for her at the store. I felt so sick, this amazing girl has been trying to do something for me that I really needed. I'm captain of the sunday league team and I'd been moaning about the cost of a new kit, so she's using her own money to do this for me. And I've just called her a slut and accused her of sleeping with our roommate. I heard her crying from our bedroom, so I knocked on and started apologizing. fuck it, I even got upset and started crying. I can't believe i caused this. she wouldn't answer the door, kept telling me to fuck off. then she used the phone in our room to ring her dad, he came for her, asked no questions on why she was upset, just gave me the look that makes my ass leak. She packed a bag, and she's gone back to her parents place. I broke down and confessed I 'd been planning on proposing, I don't know what I expected it to do, but she got really angry and told me after four years together, if I can jump to an extreme conclusion so quickly then I'm not ready to be married, I don't know her at all, I clearly don't trust her, and there is no hope for us. I've been blowing up her phone since, until she either blocked me or turned it off. Well reddit, I let my anger get the best of me and now I've lost the best thing that ever happened to me. She told my roommate too and he came home pissed at me as well, he said he can't believe I think he would do that to me. She left me, roommate is pissed at me. Safe to say I've ruined Christmas and lost my incredible girl. Any advice how to fix this? I don't want it to end over something so fucked up on my part. tl;dr: Girlfriend wasn't cheating, I called her a slut, she left me. Christmas is ruined. FINAL COMMENTS youcancallmecal "after four years together, if I can jump to an extreme conclusion so quickly then I'm not ready to be married, I don't know her at all, I clearly don't trust her, and there is no hope for us." Buddy, I'm sorry, but I'm fairly certain your relationship is screwed beyond all repair. Whether or not she takes you back, you really need to look into getting some therapy for yourself. Frankly, it wasn't fair of you to judge your girlfriend based on your ex's mistakes, and you will destroy many more relationships in the future due to your lack of trust, and your inability to resolve conflict fairly without name-calling. [deleted] In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I am thankful that I am not dating OP. ~ heroineoftime Holy shit, you have some serious anger issues, dude. I don't think there is any fixing this. You called her a slut for trying to surprise you with an extremely thoughtful gift. If she was the one posting this, I'd be telling her to run like hell. You need to accept that you fucked up big time, leave her alone, and get some goddamn therapy. Are any of you “sleep divorced”?
I’m not sure if this is the best forum but I was wondering how many people here sleep in separate beds than their spouses and when/why it started? Is this more common than most people think? About 5 years ago I finally got up one night to sleep in the guest bedroom because my wife was keeping me up. We both found we slept much better. I flip and flop all night, I like to stay up and read with a lamp on, and I like having a loud white noise machine with multiple fans going, she doesn’t like any of those things. If one of us has to get up to go to work we don’t wake the other. If one of us has to use the restroom, we don’t wake the other. Allegedly I occasionally snore. I also love to spread out on my own king sized bed and sleep with the door closed and locked whereas we would have to keep “our” bedroom door open for the cats. We both sleep better and as a result are in better moods and more rested, it’s great! Edit: Apparently using the word “divorced” has triggered a few people. Apologies, it’s a common term for this scenario. If I could change the title to “sleep in separate bedrooms” so I wouldn’t hurt any more feelings I would, but I can’t, so sorry again. submitted by /u/cfh64 to r/NoStupidQuestions [link] [comments]

40M living in a subsidised government apartment
Got my own space after living with my parents for 40 years. Now living on my own at the western part of Singapore. Anything else you think I can do? Edit: Thank you guys for the upvote and compliments! Never imagined that it would cause a stir. Responses to FAQs: Chair: HÅG Capisco Puls 8020 Monitor: Samsung M5/M50D 32" Smart Monitor Desk setup: I placed the desk in this configuration because it also serves as my TV console. When I’m not in the mood to work, I just sit on the sofa and use the smart monitor as my TV. Lamp: IKEA VARMBLIXT lamp Mat: Ngh Ngh pooping mat https://shop.wheniwasfour.com/products/ngh-ngh-bath-mat?_pos=18&_sid=1f142d36e&_ss=r Wall paintings: One is a purchase from a painter whom a priest knows, and the other was a gift from the same priest. Lighting: The lights are warm orange, but the iPhone camera autocorrects them to white. I can also adjust the lights to white or warm white. Mahjong nightstand: Can be purchased here: https://lofthome.com/products/modern-resin-side-table-huat Oven placement: The oven ended up on the sink-side counter as a band-aid. The initial plan was to place it near the stove, but it was too close. But it’s a regret I can live with anyway. Decor: Paintings for my bedroom and plants for the house are on the way. Housing in Singapore: Yes, this is a newly built subsidised flat. I live in Singapore, and every citizen is eligible to purchase a flat from the Housing and Development Board (HDB). Single citizens aged 35 and above can purchase either a new 1-bedroom flat with a fresh 99-year lease, or buy any flat type from the resale market through property agents. More details: https://www.hdb.gov.sg/residential/buying-a-flat/understanding-your-eligibility-and-housing-loan-options/flat-and-grant-eligibility/singles Fun fact: About 80% of Singaporean households live in HDB flats. Even fun fact: HDB works with architects and designers in private practice to design flats submitted by /u/jnt85 to r/malelivingspace [link] [comments]

AITA for threatening to cut my parents off financially to stop my brother from proposing at my wedding? (Final Update - VERY LONG Post)
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/Soon-to-Wed-Throway AITA for threatening to cut my parents off financially to stop my brother from proposing at my wedding? TW: favoritism, verbal abuse, harassment, suicide attempts, death of a relative Originally posted to r/AmItheAsshole & r/EntitledPeople BoRU 1 Posted by u/Screaming-Harpy Original Post Feb 2, 2022 I 27m 'll start this off by saying my wedding is scheduled for April because my fiancé 25F has always dreamed of a spring wedding. And I really like the idea too. I have an older brother though 30M. And last Saturday I was called over to my parents' house to talk about something. But they refused to tell me what until I got there. They then sat me down with my brother and told me that my brother wants to use my wedding as the perfect day for him to propose to his girlfriend. I was instantly mad and told them ABSOLUTELY NOT!! But they ganged up on me. I ended up so enraged to the point that I, one man, somehow backed all three of them into a corner. I told them that if they want to do this, then not only will they all be uninvited, but I'll also cut off the financial support I've been giving monthly since they paid to have my golden child brother go through college by taking out a second mortgage. I landed a decently high paying job and have been sending five hundred dollars to my parents monthly to help ease their mortgage. And I didn't ask for a stake in the ownership of their house either. It was entirely good will. And I can cut it off any time. I left without speaking anything more to them. But my brother came to my home the next day to yell at me that I ruined his big chance because now our parents are siding with me and say they'll evict him if he tries to propose at my wedding. He said I was financially blackmailing our parents, and that he just wanted a good chance to propose because he was afraid his girlfriend might leave him soon. I said that was his problem, not mine. Because my wedding day is not about him. And if he tries to propose at my wedding, I WILL have him thrown out. That's not a maybe, but a definite. And I doubt his girlfriend would appreciate her proposal followed up with being tossed out by a bouncer. He yelled a few choice words at me, then went crying to our only surviving grandparent. Our maternal grandmother. And she called to try and ream me over the phone. No surprise my brother heavily embellished the version of the story he told her. But she still sided with him after I gave her the real story. She tried to hold her ground, but the verbal backlash I ended up giving her left her crying. That got back to my parents, who are now pissed at me for taking things this far. But I told them I only went that far because I had to when they were all trying to get me to let my brother use my wedding as his springboard for a proposal. They ended up agreeing with me, but still stated they feel like I'm crass. And my brother showed up at my home again to scream at me that I'm an asshole, and I hope I'm happy with myself for not allowing him the opportunity. I thought I was entirely in the right at first. But maybe I really did take it too far with my brother. So I thought I'd come here to ask for an impartial ruling. AITA for everything I did and said to my brother and everyone else? Edit, My fiancé knows what my brother tried to do. And she's very angry about it. She's almost ready to have him uninvited if he pursues this any further. Also, I won't justify making my grandmother cry. Normally I have a very mild temper. But when it comes to certain people like my brother, parents and grandmother, I can easily get short with them because of all the past favouritism. My grandmother especially. She always sided with my brother and believed his lies no matter what he did. She's the biggest reason my parents favoured my brother too. She kept trying to convince me over the phone to let my brother propose at my wedding that I ended up losing it on her. And for those wondering why I've been sending my parents money. Well about a year ago they were on the verge of losing their house because of extra debt they took on paying for my brother's college ten years ago. They were too prideful to ask me for help. But I didn't want them to end up losing their home. I personally don't want the house in the future. But I want my parents to be able to keep their home. We have a plan for me to continue payments till I'm 30, and I have sent them to a financial advisor to help them get things settled. But my lazy brother isn't helping. He only pays $300 a month for rent and doesn't contribute to utilities. Years ago he also dropped out of the college my parents paid for and they couldn't get the lost tuition money back. So they are finally starting to get angry with him themselves. Edit 2, Yes my brother dropped out of college. But a few years later he got an online college degree. And barely passed to get it. I have no issue with online college. However after what my parents spent on him, it feels like a stick to the eye that he did that. But the online college degree got him a better job. He's never really changed though. As soon as he got that degree, he wanted nothing by praise for months. My brother has no bad habits like gambling, high spending or drug addiction. He's just a jerk, and always has been. VERDICT: NOT THE ASSHOLE Added Info/Small info Feb 14, 2022 (12 days later) OOP posted the same to r/EntitledPeople so I added the bonus content/small update, OOP also rehashed the first post so edited it out My fiancé knows what my brother tried to do. And she's very angry about it. She's almost ready to have him uninvited if he pursues this any further. I ended up speaking with my brother again and threatened to tell his girlfriend if he was still intending to propose at my wedding without permission. He took it poorly and called me an awful person. So I pointed out that my wedding isn't about him. Our parents were there for this, and they backed me up. I think my brother did a double take when they did that. My dad pointed out that he'd raised my brother wrong, and that was on him. So from now on my brother was to show them real respect. And they wanted to get an official lease drawn up for him to pay proper rent and utilities. He was only paying them $300 a month without contributing to any utilities or food. And if he doesn't want to pay, he can move out and they'll rent his room to someone else. My brother turned to our mom for help. But she just agreed with dad. He looked like he was having a conniption and then left the house. He came back a couple hours later, but spoke to no one and locked himself in his room. Two days later my brother announced he was moving in with grandma because she invited him. And our parents basically told him that if he wants to live with her, then to go ahead. My brother responded to this by saying we all hate him for just wanting to propose to his girlfriend. My parents pointed out that it's not that he wanted to propose, but where he wanted to do it. And he'd get no support for it. He's refusing to talk to our parents now. My grandmother did try to call me again. But it ended up with me telling her that my brother will not be allowed to propose at my wedding, plain and simple. So he can get over it, or not come. And the same goes for her. I ended up calling her out on her favouritism towards my brother since we were kids. Which she tried to deny at first, but couldn't keep doing so because of how much I'd pointed out. She ended up crying again while I told her that if she keeps trying to insist on this, then she won't be coming to my wedding. She begged me not to rescind her invite. But still said she doesn't understand why I couldn't let my brother have his way before ending the call. My fiancé is 100% on my side. And is fully ready to remove my brother and grandmother from the wedding. My grandmother hasn't called again. And she's not talking to my parents either. My guess is my brother went crying to her again to tell her mommy and daddy weren't enabling him anymore. So she offered for him to move in with her. But there's literally nothing she can do to sway me. And I think my last conversation with her made her realize that. I didn't wish to tell my brother's GF. But she called me up on a Saturday about my Reddit post. She saw it read in a online video, and then realized it might be me with the way I described my brother and grandmother. So yeah, now she knows. She ended up tearing my brother a new @$$hole. And he still tried to justify himself to her. That's when she told him they were through and cut all contact with him. My brother of course blamed me. Even though his girlfriend said that she's been ready to leave him for a while now, and if he'd tried to propose, no matter where, she'd have told him "No". So that's it. My brother showed up at my place one more time to have a fit, and said he is boycotting my wedding. He actually thought he had leverage that he and grandma won't go. I said I wouldn't miss him, and that he's in his 30s now and needs to grow up. Our parents have cut the umbilical and are no longer supporting him. And they're already repainting his room to rent it to someone else. And they plan on renting out my old bedroom as well because they need the money after the financial hole he left them in after dropping out of college, just to do mooch off them for a while and then get a degree with online college later, and then barely paying any rent while also making them pay for his food and utilities despite having a good paying job. They spent the world on him and he wasn't the least bit grateful. That made my brother just shut down and leave. And since then we've not heard a peep out of him. That's everything that's happened from my original post up till now. Edit, Yes I have very good security hired for the wedding. And they'll toss my brother out like bouncers in a heartbeat. Update 1 Feb 25, 2022 (3 days after last post) Well my brother and grandma are officially uninvited from my upcoming wedding. My grandma called me again to berate me even more for refusing to let my brother propose. Apparently he's beside himself with grief over his ex. Yeah... So beside himself with grief that he's already on Tinder looking for a date. Or so his Social Media says. Which I pointed out to grandma. She claimed that was just his way of coping. I said I didn't care. He's no longer invited to my wedding because I can't trust that he won't do something crazy if he's there. Then she gave me her classic line of "I don't understand why!". That's what she always says when I won't do something for my brother after he'd screwed me over. For example. I once gave my brother a loan back when he was still doing online college. He didn't wanna repay it despite promising he would. Even after getting a good job he hemmed and hawed about it when I wanted him to pay me back. He had the money, he just didn't wanna give it up. So I said I was never going to loan him money again. And grandma gave her line of not understanding why. Even when I told her it was because I knew my brother would never want to repay me, so he's not gonna get another penny. Her response was to say she still doesn't understand. So just hearing her say that about the issue of my brother being banned from my wedding made me lose it. I yelled at her that she does understand. She just acts like she doesn't because she doesn't want to. She's always been on my brother's side no matter what he did. And because of that she's no longer invited to my wedding either. And I don't care if she cries. Because I'm just plain done with her. She made her bed with the side she chose. Now she can live with it. Of course she exploded in tears crying like a sad whale and called me a bad grandson. I said she was a bad grandma for thinking I'm the bad grandson when she always believed my brother's lies and played favourites. Everyone else knew it too. And I'm sick of her pretending everything was rosy when she used to beat my ass and then tell me I'd be a bad boy if I told my parents she'd spanked me. I then told her not to call me again unless it was to admit the truth and give me a genuine apology. And then I ended the call. It went right back to radio silent from her. I also pre-emptively told my parents about what happened. And their response was that they don't care I yelled at her anymore, because she's never going to stop siding with my brother no matter what. My parents are actually doing so much better since my brother moved out. They've got two rooms ready to rent out and on the market waiting for a tenant. My dad is also working on clearing out the attic to make another room up there for someone to rent. They're basically turning as many rooms in their house as they can into liveable space. They're gonna need that rent money to help pay off their debts. And they're still thanking me a lot for helping them with the money I've been sending monthly. My parents sat me down a while ago and apologized heavily for everything that went on from my childhood till now. They said they can offer no good excuse as to why my brother was the favourite when they shouldn't have been playing favourites at all. And that what they did was completely unacceptable. And the fact that I was still willing to help them out, even after everything they'd done, made them realize how horrible they were as parents. And from now on they'll do their best to be better people. They've basically stopped caring about what my brother and grandma think too. They haven't been talking to them either. I've heard nothing from my brother's ex. She wants nothing more to do with my family. And I don't blame her. My fiancé is super happy about me standing my ground because she wanted my brother and grandmother out much sooner. Then she admitted something to me I never knew. Apparently the few times she was alone with my grandma, she was told all sorts of lies about me that my fiancé never once believed. She couldn't recall much. But basically grandma said a number of things that I remember my brother did that were pinned on me. But the gist of it is that my grandma was trying to tell my fiancé that I was a bad egg as a child. And that she better watch me closely in case she decided not to marry me. So yeah. Grandma was trying to poison the well with more lies. One story my fiancé remembered my grandma talking about was one I knew right away. It was the story about the broken lamp. My grandma used to have a beautiful hand crafted stained glass lamp. My brother threw a football in the house straight at it and the lamp fell and broke. It was old and frail, so it basically shattered. My brother said that I was throwing a football in the house, and that he tried to stop me. But it was actually the other way around. Grandma refused to believe me and spanked me bare bottomed with a wooden spoon. My grandpa knew my brother was lying. And even told my parents so. My brother was grounded and I was told I didn't have to visit grandma anymore if I didn't want to. And after my grandpa passed away, I stopped going. The fact that old hag was still talking about that stuff to people like my fiancé when I'm not around infuriates me. So I'm beyond glad that I've cut the tumors that are my brother and grandmother out of my life. I don't need them anymore. Update 2 March 5, 2022 (8 days after last post) Well my brother came pounding on my front door again a few days ago. And this time he was drunk. He drunkenly told me he found out about my Reddit posts because he tried to get back together with his ex, and she told him how she found out what he was planning. So his dumb@$$ thought it'd be a good idea to get wasted and then confront me. He even vomited on my porch step. And then did something I didn't see coming. He curled up on the ground crying. I figured he was gonna attack me or something because he was acting so deranged. But instead he just got in a sort of fetal position and cried in the grass while blaming me for his problems in between swigs from the bottle he was carrying. From what I could get out of him, he recently went to see his ex and begged her to take him back. But she told him he was a man-child and she'd never want to marry him. And then explained how she knew he was planning on proposing. He went home and searched online till he found my Reddit posts and read them. He went through a lot of the comments on my prior posts. And when he realized next to nobody saw things from his point of view, he broke his computer monitor and started pounding a bottle of vodka while walking over to my home since I only live a couple miles from my grandma's house. While he was sitting on the ground, he was drunkenly cussing at me and saying it's my fault that everyone but grandma hates him now. I had no sympathy and told him he did all that himself. Sure I aired our dirty laundry online by telling everyone. But he was still the entitled jerk who never really grew up and goes crying to granny like a spoiled brat when he doesn't get his way. Time to grow up and man up. He called me a few more things that I could barely understand, and then pretty much stopped talking to just sit there and keep drinking and crying. I ended up taking away what was left of his bottle of vodka, and said that maybe when he's sober he can see some common sense. Then I called for a taxi to take him home. I wasn't about to drive to grandma's house because I don't want to see or be anywhere near her. My brother didn't even thank me for calling and paying for the Taxi. Just flopped himself into the back seat and told the driver to get going. I got a call the next day from the taxi service stating my brother had vomited multiple times all over the back seat in the short time he was in the cab. And it took $200 to thoroughly clean it because it was everywhere. I apologized and mailed them a check for their trouble. It's been a few days since that happened. But the crap didn't end there. So I'll be making another post very soon. Update 3 March 7, 2022 (2 days after last post) I knew it. I just knew it. And some of you called it. My grandma couldn't leave well enough alone. She and my brother were already both uninvited from my upcoming wedding and borderline ghosted. But now she's gone and made a huge scene about it. She took my brother over to my parents' house to show them my Reddit posts. Thing is, my parents already know about and have read them because I admitted it to them after my brother drunkenly came to my home to yell at me. And my parents no longer care because the situation opened their eyes some time ago. I wasn't there to see it. But my grandma laid it on thick to my parents about how she has been thoroughly humiliated by me. And that she didn't understand why I'd do this over something so trivial as a my brother proposing at my upcoming wedding. Well this next part I never expected. My mom, ever the passive doormat to her mother for as long as I can remember finally lost it on grandma about how she's a narcissist, and how her influence made her and my dad seem like ones too. And they were idiots to let that happen. Then they told grandma and my brother that the whole wanting to propose at my wedding thing was a completely stupid and selfish idea. And then reiterated reasons I've stated as to why with it likely being my brother wanting to put his ex on the spot in front of the whole family. Then my parents told them both to get out. My brother especially they admonished because he'd used them as a veritable ATM for years and barely contributed financially after landing a good job. And then me, the son they'd regretfully ignored was someone they were far more proud of because I helped them start to undo the damage they'd done to themselves, and thus far I've asked for nothing in return. Grandma I'm told left in hysterics. And my brother was silent most of the time. The next part is from my own experience as grandma called me again to yell at me. I let her have her rant while my fiancé and I just let the phone sit on the coffee table while on speaker mode. After a while grandma realized I wasn't saying anything back and yelled at me to speak to her. So I said something one of the commenters I've had here pointed out in a prior post. That she's a coward who thinks she's in charge. But she's not, and never will be. She can't boss me around, she has nothing to leverage over me, and she always acts like she doesn't understand my reasoning when I know she does. But she doesn't ever care to admit it. Then I called her out on the lies she spewed about me to my fiancé. Which grandma immediately denied. But then my fiancé spoke up and said she'd told me everything grandma had said to her. Then asked why she would do that. Did she not want me to be married and be happy or something? And that's when it came out. Grandma yelled that she was pissed I am getting married before my brother. She'd wanted to see him married first because he's older, and her favorite grandson. And she believed the least I could have done was let my brother try to save his relationship by proposing at my wedding. I said that wasn't trying to save a relationship, that was trying to trap that poor woman in one by hoping she wouldn't say no in front of a crowd. But I've already spoken to my brother's ex before she cut contact with all of us, and I know for certain she'd have said no to him anyway. And she'd been ready to break up with him for months. I doubt the relationship would have even lasted long enough to make it to my wedding. Then I said I knew she was going to call me selfish. So I pointed out all the things that make her selfish and me not. I'm helping out my parents financially when I didn't have to. I didn't ask for money from anyone when I went to college. I actually worked hard at my relationship with my significant other and didn't scheme to try and find a way to take control of it. While my grandma would rather spew out any reason she can think of to make my brother the golden boy who can do no wrong. She lied about me just to try and ruin my relationship in her hopes my brother would marry first. And she openly admitted to having a favourite grandson. Now that's selfish! Then I said that if it'd turned out my brother had been in love with my fiancé or something, I bet she would have demanded I give her to my brother as well. Because that's just the kind of selfish narcissist she is. Then all I could hear on the line was grandma loudly sobbing and my brother trying to console her. He didn't say anything to me. And then the phone hung up. Either by him or her. I don't know. But I think it's fair to say I really verbally tore grandma apart this time. Much more so than I ever had before. And yes, this time I finally blocked her number. And my brother's too. Update 4 Apr 25, 2022 (7 weeks after last update) Well it's been a ride. A fair bit has happened since my last post. So I thought it best to wait till I'm married and settled in after my honeymoon to speak to everyone. Firstly, I wanna say that I don't know shit about taxes other than I pay them. But someone here questioned how I could write off the money I was giving to my parents monthly for their mortgage. And I honestly thought I could. But a person who actually does taxes contacted me and said that wasn't possible, or at the very least shouldn't be possible since I don't have partial ownership of the house. And that made me curious that I may be breaking the law. Well I looked into it, and long story short the person who was doing my taxes before, no longer is. I took my questions to the owner of the tax firm and explained to him that the guy who was doing my taxes was getting me a roughly one third write off on the money I was paying to my parents monthly. Well the owner said he'd recheck my records himself, and said he'd call me later. Took a few days, but he told me that the guy who was doing my taxes did a few things that he shouldn't. And that he had a previous record of doing this. The firm fired him. And the owner apologized profusely and asked me not to take my business elsewhere. I believe in supporting local businesses and shop from them when I can. So I told him that as long as my records are clean, I'll stay with them. And he assured me that he'll make sure everything is. I do find it stupid the owner didn't fire my former tax guy after his first offense. And I get the feeling he rug swept a lot of things. But he's assured me that my taxes will be done by him personally from now on. So I'm gonna give him the chance to make everything right. Since my last post my parents have also managed to rent out both of their spare rooms. Both tenants are young women who are first time renters. And they've each taken a room. Both are pleasant enough, but I've barely spoken to them. My parents say they're pretty good tenants. So we'll see how everything goes. My father has also begun remodelling the attic into another room that they can eventually rent. It's gonna be a slow process as he doesn't have a lot of time to work on it unless it's on weekends. But he's determined to get it done. Now on to the period before my wedding. Well.... My grandma went mental. Apparently after I told her off over the phone about a month ago, she went off her rocker even further and actually lashed out at my brother. Which is something I thought she'd never do with how much as he loves and enables him. After about a week, a neighbour heard all the commotion and ended up going to check on her. And she attacked him over it. Police were called and took grandma into custody for a psych hold, and she tried to attack one of the officers as well. But she's a frail little old lady with false teeth. Not a lot she can do to one of them. My parents went in to see her, but visitors weren't permitted until the three days were over. And when they were my parents met with her and told me she was hamming it up playing the victim and trying to get my parents back on her side. My mother said grandma was still blaming me and also saying that she still had a right to be at my wedding. Well my mother let her have it by saying that she lost that right after everything she said and did. All the lies and gaslighting. And being mad at me for something as petty as getting married before my man-child older brother that she outright said was her favourite grandson. Meanwhile my brother was chilling in her house because he had it all to himself until my grandma was allowed to return home. Don't have much information from that point since my parents didn't bother to see grandma or my brother again thus far. Next is my wedding. The outdoor venue my wife and I picked was beautiful. There was a good sized man made pond with paddle boats, and plenty of wild ducks and frogs. Though the ducks came right up to people begging for food. We brought some loafs of cheap wheat bread so the kids in the family could toss some to the ducks. The venue was also near a golf course, so kids were having fun hunting for lost golf balls like they were Easter eggs. They actually found a lot of them. That was some good wholesome fun. Yes I did have security there, and yes my grandma did show up and tried to get in. Even though her invitation had been officially rescinded, she still had the paper one she'd gotten in the mail since she refused to return it after being uninvited. My brother wasn't with her. But she drove 200 miles herself just to try and get into my wedding. She showed up acting sweet, but then turned into a crazy bitch when the guard refused her entry. She screamed out my name and demanded to be let in. And she refused to leave till she spoke to me. Until security threatened police. She ended up screaming at him and then waddling back to her car. And that was it for that. But this was not the end to the story. Oh no! Because now that the only person still talking to grandma was my older brother, I guess she started taking things out on him. No family scapegoats left for her to yell at, so she started going crazy on my brother since he was under her roof now. I know this because he sent me a letter since I have him blocked on everything but snail mail. I got the letter after coming back from my honeymoon. It was a letter with a mix of apologies and blaming me. He said he was sorry for wanting to propose at my wedding, and sees how crumby it would have been to try that. And that I was right about him being underhanded in trying to ask his ex to marry him in front of so many people. But then said he was angry he didn't get to go to my wedding because I couldn't overlook his traumas. Then he said he was sorry for letting grandma treat me the way she did for so long because now he's getting some of that himself. Then blamed me for getting grandma so worked up in the first place over yelling at her and then not letting her in to my wedding. Then went on to blame me for our parents kicking him out of their house, and being stuck with grandma because she's driving him up the wall. (They didn't kick him out. He left when they wanted him to pay rent properly) So now he's apartment hunting. He did apparently ask my parents to move back in with them, but they outright refused and told him to get his own place. And that's about it on that. And on a side note, my brother's ex girlfriend still has not reached out or spoken to anyone in my family since she last spoke with me. Not that I blame her. I barely knew her anyway. And we have no mutual friends. I checked her social media recently though, and she seems just fine without my brother in her life. So if she reads this, I'll just say "Good for you! Live well and don't ever let crazy like my brother back in again." And to my brother, whom I know will likely find and read this soon. Get a life man! Stop blaming your shit on me and grow up! You're on your own now, and the rest of us aren't gonna hold you up anymore. And if you do manage to date again, don't screw it up like last time. You and I both know why things didn't work out with your ex. And I hope you realize now that running to Grammy and getting drunk won't help you anymore when you're 30 years old. The world doesn't revolve around you. So let it go. As for me, my honeymoon was great. We went on the road and made it all the way to the coast. My wife also insisted we go cycling. I'm not much of a bicycle rider. But it was fun to go a couple miles down a coast road. Ended up dead tired though. Need to get in better shape. Anyways I'd like to thank everyone here for listening to me and offering their advice. It really helped. FINAL UPDATE Update 5 - An extra update to the saga Feb 13, 2023 (1 year after original post) Content Warning: Threats and actions of self harm. I know the post I made last year was supposed to be the end. But I just wanted to tell this last bit now that it's all over. This compiles some events that happened from then to just recently. At first my brother and grandmother only got worse. My grandmother turned into a crying whale again when my brother told her he was moving out. Then he had the gall to ask for mine and our parents' help to move his stuff because grandma was saying she wouldn't let him leave. But our parents just reminded him of the shit he'd done to end up in his current situation. And rather than act like a rational human being, he decided he'd do just the opposite. He blamed me for ruining his life again. And my father told me he actually busted a gut laughing at my brother when he said that. Then laid into my brother over how he was blaming his own shit on me. And my 30 year old brother curled up in a chair crying. He refused to leave our parents' house that night and stayed curled up on the couch with a bottle of booze until the next day. In which he was kicked out by our parents with a raging hangover. Our father told him he needed to apologize to me for real face to face. And that they'll no longer consider him their son if he doesn't. It took my brother a couple of days. But he showed up at my place with a piece of paper in hand, and read out an apology he'd pre-written. He said he was so sorry for everything he's done. He's been a shitty person and an even shittier brother. He looked for any way he possibly could in his own head to make me the bad guy. But the excuses just aren't there anymore. He can't ever undo the things he did. But he wants to move forward and try to mend our relationship as siblings. Starting with GTFO of grandma's house. He told me he understands why none of us want to be there, and that he'll hire help. We ended up shaking hands and having a hug. And thus far he's actually been working hard to improve on himself. Even cutting down on his drinking by a lot. As for my grandma. She did try to keep my brother from moving out. And she refused to let the movers he hired in. He had to get the help of a police officer to keep her at bay. They only had to move out one room's worth of stuff. And with the movers and my brother working at it, they got all of his stuff out of there in record time. My grandma ended up threatening to un-alive herself while he was leaving. Or so my brother said. But I'm pretty sure that was the exact truth because she did actually try. But in the most attention seeking way possible. She took a bunch of pills and then called 911 on herself. They took her to the hospital and got her stomach pumped. Which was a bit redundant as she'd thrown up before the ambulance even arrived. But they wanted to be sure. My parents ended up getting APS involved as grandma ended up on another psyche hold, only this time in a hospital bed. During her stay they did several tests on her because she avoided doctors for years, and she was found to be in bad health. Her kidney function was low, her lungs weren't in very good shape, and she was at heavy risk of diabetes. So grandma had to be put in a care facility for her own health and safety. It actually didn't surprise me much. She was a little woman, but had some weight on her. And all her teeth had to come out when she was in her 50s because the only thing she would drink is soda, and she ate a lot of sugary foods. She especially loved chocolate. She also used to be a heavy smoker in her younger years, and I guess that did some lasting damage to her lungs. She'd been having breathing trouble for some time, but somehow hid it from us all. Doctors found that she needed to be put on oxygen, and that she can't live alone anymore. She wanted my brother to come back and become her full time care-giver. But he refused and said that he just can't. He's got his own life to live, and he's got a lot to make up for with the rest of us. Well my grandma went crazy crying and throwing things in the hospital while screaming at us all to all get out. After she was out of the hospital, my parents worked to have grandma put in a care home. They moved a few of her personal belongings into a room there to try and make her more comfortable. But that didn't really do much of anything. She was there all of a week and said she was incredibly miserable. All the employees treated her like a child, and she had to have an oxygen breather attached to her at all times. She also said she hated being there because in her words, the place was filled with old people. And she hated being reminded that she's old too, and would rather be alone. She was there nearly a month before trying to un-alive herself again by refusing to wear her oxygen breather and saying she'd hang herself with the tubes. They had to put her on close observation 24/7, which only made her even more miserable. Each time we saw her, she begged us, even begged me, to take her out of that place. She missed her home, and she missed her old life. But she wasn't going anywhere because she was considered a danger to herself. Well eventually she just seemed to accept her fate that she would spend the rest of her life living in the care home. And my grandma pretty much just shut down. She became that bitter old woman that hardly talks to anyone. We paid her regular visits, but she was never happy to see us. Me especially. And the months just blurred together with this routine. Things seemed to change a little when we told her my wife was pregnant. And she perked up at that. My wife reluctantly let her feel her belly when we visited. And that seemed to make her day. If anything, it made grandma a bit nicer to all of us. But she was generally still her mean old self. Then some time ago we found out grandma had a stroke in her sleep and passed away. The funeral was a bit lackluster. My mother was really the only one who cried. Most of us were just really quiet the whole time. And then we had a small family reunion at my parents' house. But if anyone here was thinking we'd be singing "Ding-dong the witch is dead", well no. It was mostly just awkward conversations as a lot of us didn't have much good to say about her. And she'd already passed away, so what good would it do any of us to talk about how toxic of a person she was in life either. So there wasn't much to do but stand around and get drunk. And get drunk we did. But it was more like a party full of sad quiet drunks. Everyone dressed in black and gulping down beer or wine. Any time someone wanted to do something fun, it just got really awkward till they shut up or decided to stay quiet or leave. And my wife wasn't there since she stayed home after the funeral because she couldn't drink, and didn't want to be surrounded by people drinking. My brother is showing some genuine improvement. Grandma was his biggest enabler. And she's no longer with us. He applied for therapy last year to try and better understand himself and make a better effort to change. For now he's trying to help out our father with remodeling the attic in his spare time, and things are still awkward between us any time we see each other. Right now I can't say how things will go in the long run at all. But without grandma's toxic, hopefully everything will change for the better. As for Grandma's estate. Well her will was surprisingly fair. We were all certain my brother would get everything since he was her favorite. But instead my parents got her house. And they are working to get it ready to be rented out. The rest of grandma's money and assets were pretty evenly distributed. Well, mostly... I didn't get much. But I didn't want it either. I'm doing fine. I didn't need it. I guess that concludes everything. TLDR: Grandma tried something crazy, got put in a care home, and passed away there. I (33f) Told My Boyfriend (33m) That I'm No Longer Interested In Marriage
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/DeviceKnown4500 Originally posted to r/AITAH I (33f) Told My Boyfriend (33m) That I'm No Longer Interested In Marriage Trigger Warnings: theft, emotional manipulation, gaslighting Original Post: January 19, 2025 Throwaway Account I (33f) met have been in a 10 year relationship with my boyfriend "Carl" (33m). After the first year of our relationship I made it very clear that I intended to be a wife someday. By the time I was 28 I started to remind him of my goals and expectations and Carl told me that while he knew he wanted to marry me he just wasn't ready yet and didn't like how I was pressuring him and called me controlling. Eventually we broke up but six months later we got back together and even moved in. Looking back on it now, I realize that that wasn't the best decision but I was so emotionally attached to this man and felt so invested that I was willing to go back to him. Carl and I have now been living together for four years and while I stopped being happy about it after the first six months, living with him isn't a bad experience. Plus I always thought that us getting married was just around the corner, because he said he was ready to commit to me but he wanted to wait for the right time because I deserved a "perfect proposal" and a more stable husband. I've been going to therapy for the past two years and recently had an epiphany. Since childhood I have always wanted a wedding but never really gave much thought to being a married woman 24/7 and what that would mean. Given my country's shift in politics and new laws that politicians are trying to pass, I realized that not only am I fine with never getting married but I'm starting to lean more into no longer possessing the desire to do it. Since then it feels like I've been set free in a way and started focusing on myself. One of the major things that I've done is tell Carl that I'll no longer assist with babysitting his nephews and niece and instead focus more of my time into getting certified in something to increase my earning potential and just relaxing. Carl seemed nonchalant about it at first but then said that we needed to have a sit down when I sent Carl's mom and his brother a text that they had three weeks before I stopped helping out completely. Carl said that while he understands my desire for more personal time, it's important to be there and sacrifice for family. I told him that he could switch around his own work schedule and help with the kids since they're technically his family, and he said that the children love me and that one day they'd be my family too once we were man and wife. It was in that moment that I told him that I no longer desired marriage and while I gave my reasons Carl still took it as me wanting to break up with him and/or thinking that he would make a terrible husband. That is not the case at all but he's starting to lash out and get suspicious and I just don't know what to do. How can I get my boyfriend to see that it's me not him? TL;DR: I realized that I no longer want to get married and my boyfriend of 10 years is taking it as a personal strike against him. AITAH has no consensus bot, OOP received mixed responses, but was leaning toward NTA Relevant Comments Commenter 1: I am curious what Carl’s mom and brother required your help with that you needed to give 3 weeks notice that you would no longer be helping with? Was it the niece and nephews childcare or something more? OOP: Carl's brother has 50/50 custody of his children but childcare after school is expensive where we live so his mom was initially watching the kids but it was getting to be too much so I offered to help out and it's been that way for about three years. I don't feel right just quitting on something like this without notice and wanted to emotionally prepare the kids that they may not see me as often as before. Commenter 2: Given my country's shift in politics and new laws that politicians are trying to pass, I realized that not only am I fine with never getting married but I'm starting to lean more into no longer possessing the desire to do it. what does this mean? OOP: I live in America and in one of the Southern states. There are some politicians who want to put in laws that I personally don't think would be for my benefit in regards to marriage and if they're successful then I definitely never want to be married someone. Does OOP live close to her family or Carl's family for any additional support / help? OOP: We don't live close enough to my family for Carl to consistently offer any help on a regular basis. Downvoted Commenter: YTA flat out. You string him along for 10 years with the goal to get married and now do a 180 without warning. Of course he gets suspicious. Also you never said why he wasnt ready for marriage. Does he have financial problems? Mental health issues he wanted to work on before? Also it reads like you dont even see him as a partner anymore but as a roommate. You just pulled the rug under him. Of course it looks like a breakup. And i dont understand how people are defending you. You fucked up bad time. I would not be surprised at all if he packs his bags now and leaves OOP: How was I string him along when he was the one who kept putting it off? Also what was there to warn him about? I can't speak for Carl as to why her never felt ready. I can only tell you what he told me. We've lived together for a couple years and he's never talked about having mental health or financial issues. I've noticed no change in his behavior either. I also made it very clear that while I no longer desired marriage I still wanted to be in the relationship. So I don't know where "break up" would come up. Commenter 3: Do the two of you want children? If not, there's no reason to get married. OOP: I don't know what to call it but I'm between wanting kids and being childfree. I could really go either way. Although given where I live in America right now I would NOT give birth in the state that I live in. Update: August 10, 2025 (almost seven months later) UPDATE: I (33f) Told My Boyfriend (33m) That I'm No Longer Interested In Marriage Hello everyone! Sorry for taking so long but a lot has happened and I ended up forgetting about this and focusing on other things. Then I saw a notification from a recent DM so I thought I'd give an update. TL;DR: We broke up and live separately. For more details please continue reading below. Okay so things were a little tense over the next few days because we were either fighting or just not talking to each other. He even moved into the spare bedroom one day and he stopped giving me money for his share of the streaming services that we both use and I technically pay for. I even but to mute his mama and brother for a little bit. Then once Valentine's Day was right around the corner he did a complete 180 and started speaking to me again and even apologized for his initial reaction and seemed really receptive to hearing my reasons. He then he told me he planned a special day for us the weekend after Valentine's Day which I was delighted to hear. On the day of I woke up to him gone but with breakfast laid out for me and a text message saying that there was work emergency and that he had to go in for a couple hours and told me to go meet him at the movie theater downtown by 3PM. I thought cool. I chilled for a bit then got ready and headed out. By 2:55PM I sent him a text message asking where he was and responded by saying he accidentally type the wrong time and that the movie wouldn't start until 5PM, and he meant was that he wouldn't be able to leave work until 3PM. He's had a case of fat fingers and butt dials before so I initially didn't think much and just decided to go walking around by outlet close by to kill time. Then I got another text saying that he'd change our online ticket reservations because he was still stuck at the office and to just chill until 7PM. This time I grew suspicious but instead of calling or texting back with questions I just gave him a thumbs and sent a selfie of me at one of my favorite stores, then started to drive back home. Normally getting back to our apartment from the downtown area where I was at around this time of day on a weekend can be a bit of a challenge but today traffic was decent. Then when I pull up to complex I see a moving truck. No big deal January/February is when a lot of people have moved out or in before so I understood. Why did I see some of Carl's friends near the truck? Why did I see some of Carl's friend moving the couch that I paid for into the truck? I called the police and told them that I was actively being robbed. I stayed in the car for a while trying to calm myself down until I saw Carl helping a man load my bookshelf into the back of his pick up truck. I got out and confronted him. This man was trying to keep me out of the apartment all day so he could quietly move out and take my furniture. And I say "my" furniture because I was the one who picked it all out and paid for most of everything and I readily shared the email confirmation order number(s)/receipts that I had archived when the police showed up. The man tried to take my bookshelf because apparently Carl had sold it to him, but that wasn't my problem and that I'd press charges on everyone if my stuff wasn't back in my place. We got into a huge argument and the police tried to brush this off as a civil matter since Carl and I lived together but I went into the station the next day and spoke to a female officer who was of better help. My dining room set, spices, blender, groceries, lamps, TV, coffee table, and mattress were gone but Carl's friends did put back the couch which was a pull out. The middle man between my landlord and me did speak to Carl about wanting to take his name off the lease but did not follow the proper protocol and confirming with me that I would take on full responsibility of rent so I did file a complaint. I ended up leaving the complex and moving somewhere else and pressed charges against Carl and his friends if only to create a paper trail and help in my civil case against my ex. In the end I was able to get some financial compensation for what I lost and he has until November to pay it all. I wasn't even sad that he didn't want to be with me anymore just pissed off at how he tried to go about it. It is very clear that he wanted to "punish" me and I'm so glad that I never ended up marrying this man. I completed my certification, got a promotion and the pay raise that comes with it, and my dad has agreed to give me the money he was saving for my future wedding as a downpayment for house. After this entire experience I am now ten toes down in never getting married. Also as a side note since Carl's brother couldn't provide consistent child care on his days the mother filed for full custody and now Carl's brother pays child support. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: So I was expecting that Carl found his person and is engaged and getting married soon. At your ages delaying an engagement/marriage when you have been together that long and have your adult jobs is being comfortable in the relationship but not sure the other one is really "the one". Becomes a habit? OOP: I don't know about marriage but from what I was told by his mom (who I didn't ask) he does have a new girlfriend. So good luck to her. Commenter 2: My only question is, why did it take you so long ( 10 years, if I remember correctly) to figure out this guy was a complete loser?! Good for you! Better late than never. OOP: Because I always idolized the idea of getting married and just like I said in my original post I developed an emotional attachment to my ex. Plus a little bit of the "Sunk Cost" mindset, but I know better now. Commenter 3: You dodged a nuke. What a world class asshole. Robbing you on his way out. And you just know how much he enjoyed picturing you coming home to an empty place. You're getting the best revenge. A court judgment and living your best life. Commenter 4: Idk feels kinda suspicious... Who decides to wait TWO WHOLE HOURS instead of going back home? Like what? OOP: I was shopping. Thank you all. My first space of my own. At 46.
I grew up poor. I married, had 2 boys and raised them alone after my divorce when they were 3 and 6. Long story short, I worked hard, moved a lot and sacrificed a lot for my boys. They are now grown and moved out. My last dog died in February and for the first time in my life, I'm taking care of no one but me. I've been involved in dog rescue for 25 years, focusing on hospice rescue for the past 7 or 8. I have lurked here since February, when my blind, diabetic Bullmastiff passed and I decided to downsize from a 4 bedroom house owned by a slumlord to this beautiful apartment (I couldn't move her. She was too old and she was comfortable in the crap house). I learned what I liked and didn't. I pinterested and ChatGPT'd stuff. I stalked this sub. Found my apartment. 3 days after I signed the rental agreement here, an animal chewed through my other rentals ceiling. I was DONE. For the first time in my life, I bought what I wanted, not what was cheap on Marketplace. I learned that peel and stick shit is your best friend in a rental and I'm acquiring all the rugs and plants. I bought a sunset lamp cuz I have a cathedral ceiling! Attached are some pics of my living room and kitchen (still in progress) as well as my Frankie for the pet tax and the hole in the roof where I used to live. Thank you all for being such a huge hope and inspiration for the past few months during my living situation glow up. submitted by /u/brainonvacation78 to r/femalelivingspace [link] [comments]

I moved into my bf’s house and I haven’t been able to sleep well for 3 weeks because he doesn't let me. I had a breakdown last night and broke a lamp. I'm going to stay in a hotel tonight….AITA?
I moved into my bf’s house (he owns) three weeks ago and it’s been really hard. We have been fighting a lot. Many of our fights are because he doesn’t let me sleep. I work 9-5 so I have to wake up at 8ish. He works whenever he wants so he doesn’t have a set sleep schedule. I use to go to sleep 11-1130pm prior to living with him. I compromised to 12-1230 am, but there are nights he goes to bed 4am, 5am, 6am, 7am. There is a master bedroom and a guest bedroom. I was sleeping in the master and he would go in and out disrupting me so I have yelled at him. He tells me “give me 10 minutes and I’ll be in bed.” Hours go by he is still not in bed, and making noises the kitchen or living room. He told me you can go to sleep without me. There is a lot of noise when he comes into the master and he says that's where all his things are there so he needs to go in and out. I tried sleeping in the guest room (does not have a lock) but when I do so he comes into there and disrupts my sleep instead of just going in the master. I have only been getting 5-6.5 hours of sleep for weeks now, very broken. Yesterday evening I told him I have a doctor’s appointment at 8am before work so I have to be up at 630ish. I got ready for bed at 10pm in the guest room and was watching TV on my computer with a plan to go to sleep at 11pm. I put a note on the door, saying "I have to be up early, please be considerate." I fell asleep at 1130ish with my eye mask on, fan on for white noise (always use this), sleep podcast, and he came in 3 times while I was sleeping and woke me up. He was drunk, turned on the light, pulled up my eye mask. I begged him every time to let me go to sleep because I have to be awake early. Then he started making alot of noise in the hallway saying he was “having 8 strippers over"..making sex noises in the bedroom.” I told him “I’m leaving, I just want to sleep, why don’t you let me sleep.” I was on my hands and knees on the floor crying and he said “I’m sorry..I’m sorry, I was just playing I’m a jerk.” I told him I need to go get some sleep and my plan was to just sleep in my car. It was now 1am. I left and he’s calling me telling me he is sorry and he’s in bed, can I come back and we can go to sleep. I come back and he is not in bed…he is in the basement getting laundry. I said I want to go to sleep. I try to sleep again and he then comes in and starts cuddling me telling me he loves me and he’s sorry. I ask him to come to my appointment with me tomorrow and he agrees, I said I have to go to the bathroom. I go pee and when I come out he is in the bathroom. 10 minutes go by and he’s still in there. I start screaming at him to come, he says he’s peeing. Then I go and open the door and he closes it before I can get in. He tells me he’s taking NyQuil. I just freaked out…I go into the bedroom and pull off everything on the dresser onto the floor. I then turn over the lamp night stands (ended up breaking one). He pushes me onto the bed and there is a necklace that he said he can’t find. He is freaking out and I’m scared so I tell him I’ll help him find it. We find it. It’s past 2am and we go to sleep in the guest room. He is on my side so I just go into the master and sleep there until my alarm goes off. I wake him up and he starts getting ready and he notices his front veneer is gone, was there last night. He accuses me of taking it. I said I didn’t, I try to help him but I have to go to my doctor’s appointment so I say let’s go and I’ll help you find it afterward. He says he wants to find it so he stays. On the way there he texts me “you don’t care about me…get out and leave me alone. You are one of the most selfish individuals I met.” I don’t respond. Then he calls me saying he found it. I go to my appt, get back home and I have to work 9-5:30pm today. I WFH, he is sleeping as I type this. I am going to get a hotel tonight and look into moving out this weekend. I feel horrible for throwing stuff on his dresser on the floor, but I can’t take this constant lack of sleep….AITA? Update: Thank you to everyone for the responses and for opening my eyes to the reality of my situation. I feel as though I have been in a daze, doubting myself and questioning my own sanity (absolutely do not recommend not sleeping). I logged off work early saying I wasn’t feeling well. I checked into a hotel. Not the closest one because I think he may look for my car there first. Going to sleep now. 2nd update: Context: This is a different relationship than my last posts. I started dating this guy in February 2024. He actually proposed to me at the end of May 2024 after a few months of dating with a stunning engagement ring. I said I wasn’t sure because it was so soon, wore it for a day and gave it back. I said I wanted us to know each other better and live together before that step. I accepted a contract start up position in July with my job half way across the country and was gone for weeks at a time. He asked me to move into his apartment before I accepted that position but I told him I wanted to see it though. I would come back for 1-2 weeks at a time and we would stay together. He always stayed up later than me until 1-2am, but he would put headphones in, turn off lights, be quiet/respectful when I was sleeping. It was only after I moved into his house (mid November) that things escalated. He told me he wanted to put me on the deed of the house, however, I declined. There is a safe in the house where he keeps cash (probably drugs too? maybe a gun- he was quite dodgy about answering this). He asked me if I wanted the code. I said no, I didn’t want to be accused if ever anything was missing. The red flags were there and my intuition was trying to warn me, should have listened to it sooner. I slept for 11 hours!! Yay!! My parents live 5 hours away. I was planning to see them Christmas Eve. I called and told them everything. Staying with a friend tonight, my dad offered to pick me up tomorrow and I’ll be there for a few weeks, at least. I will be breaking up with my bf but I want to be a few states away before I tell him. If he shows up at my parent’s home, we’re going to call the police. My dad and my brother said they’ll come back with me later on to get the rest of my belongings, idk if I even want to go back there to get them. I just know I can’t do it right now. Thank you all! 3rd update: I broke up with my ex and he has been calling leaving VM’s. He accused me of coming to his home the day after Christmas sleeping in his bed until 2pm, stealing 10k as well as a “green bag.” I’ve never stolen from him and I was hours away in a different state. He is ADAMANT I was there. He has a ring camera, which would show that I wasn’t there.I went to a museum with my family, went out to dinner with friends. I have 8 people who can verify I was with them. VM of him saying he had thought about “ending it all on Christmas” because I am a selfish person and left him alone. VM of him saying “good luck finding your clothes.” VM of him accusing me of cheating on him. I have friends who told me that he has been saying I am a “prostitute” because I stayed at a hotel. I still have not gone back to get my stuff. I want my things, but I don’t even know what’s left. The thought of seeing him again makes me feel like I can’t breathe. I want him to leave me alone, I have thought about getting a restraining order, but I’m afraid it’s going to be denied because he has more money and resources than me. submitted by /u/Pretty_Step5094 to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

AITA for being 'greedy' and not giving our daughter's stuff to my pregnant sister?
Throwaway. I'm going to keep this as short as I can, I honestly think this whole thing is ridiculous. I'm 33 and my husband and I have 2 kids, 8M and 7F. We didn't plan having them back to back but it happened, my husband got a vasectomy and we're set. When I was pregnant with our son, we were living in a rented 2 bedroom house and decorated the nursery with olive and wood tones. We kept it the same when we had our daughter and just made room for the baby. When our son was 6 and our daughter was 5, my husband got a big promotion at work that allowed us to look for and buy a 4 bedroom forever house. Since it was permanent, we thought it'd be fun to give the kids theme rooms. We asked them each what they wanted and our son picked dinosaurs (my husband likes to joke that we have a mini Ross on our hands) so we did a wilderness theme and my daughter picked Aurora so we did a fairytale theme. We went all out since it'll be their bedrooms until they're teens and we gave the nursery furniture away since we were done having kids. We asked our families first but none of them were planning kids at the time so it went to friends. Present- my sister is 21 weeks pregnant with a babygirl- their first. She was over at our place and said she was leaning to something like my daughter's room for the nursery but nursery stuff are expensive. I told her that she should go with neutral tones since it'll be used a lot- they want a big family. She was like 'nah, I want themed ones for each baby like you did with [my kids names]'. I raised my eyebrows because that's going to be expensive but nodded because who am I to talk when I kind of did the same? We continued chatting for a while and she grabbed my laptop and started going through the website I used and complained again so I suggested that she put some of the reasonably priced stuff on her baby shower list. She gave a noncommittal hum and then said that I can give her some stuff as well. I was confused because I thought she meant the old nursery and I reminded her that we gave it away. She shook her head and told me she meant stuff from our daughter's room. I asked her what she means because she's using that room, it's not like she doesn't live in it. She waved her hand and told me it's not a big deal, we can part with a few things. I asked her what she thought we can part with and she casually said stuff like the drapes, a lamp, the mirror etc. I asked her sarcastically if she wanted the sheets as well? Or maybe the clothes off our daughter's back? She just glared and told me I could tone down my greed and help out with this. I told her a flat no, it's unreasonable that she's even asking because she and her husband are well off just like us. It's not like she's struggling and I'm refusing to help. She told me that it's different because they want a big family so they need to save more. I told her if that's the case, they can save by using the same the nursery for every baby. She just glared again, called me a greedy bitch and left. She's not replying to my texts and my mom called to ask me what happened because she called her to complain about me without specifying anything. She was just as bewildered as me when I told her. My husband thinks I'm in the right and I do too, I'm just confused and maybe there's something we're not seeing? Edit: Thank you guys for all your opinions and advice. After talking about it with my husband and my mom, I'm going to give my sister a couple of days to cool off before I try to reach out to her again and hopefully have a conversation. You may find this naive but all three of us agree that this isn't like her. Maybe she and her husband are going through a rough financial patch or maybe he pulled the plug on multiple themed nurseries- whatever it is, I'm not ready to go scorched earth and cut my sister off after one bizarre, entitled demand. She's still my sister, the one I grew up with, the one that held me down when I was going through stuff and kept me grounded, the one who let me nearly break her hand from squeezing too hard when I was in labor until my husband got there. All of that doesn't just go away. If you're interested in an update once there is one, I'm happy to and if not, Thank you again. submitted by /u/Internal-Soup906 to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

Literally in tears from exhaustion. Cat will not let us sleep. Please help. Serious replies, I’m begging.
I’m at my wits end. I don’t know what else to do. This is Jack, he’s a bit over a year old, and he will not let us sleep. He’s not looking for attention because once one of us gets up, he just fucks off to do whatever and reappears the second we try and fall asleep on the couch or go back to bed. We have an automatic feeder that goes off twice overnight. He has two sisters and countless toys to play with. We’ve tried keeping him up during the day, doesn’t work. Tried tiring him out before bed. Doesn’t work. Been to the vet (as recently as three weeks ago), no issues. Ignoring him doesn’t work. He just yells and yells, then starts doing things we can’t ignore like knocking over bedside lamps, messing with the expensive shades (came with the house, we aren’t masochists) and jumping on top of the mounted TV. Squirt bottle chases him away but he comes right back. Locking him out of the bedroom results in him howling and scratching at the door all night. Literally. He doesn’t give up after any length of time, we’ve tried waiting him out. I don’t know what else to do. It’s severely affecting my quality of life, I need sleep. Sometimes it’s not until 4:30 but lately it’s been nearly all night after 2am. Hence me posting this at 3:30am. There has to be something else we can do. Please for the love of god let there be something. I am so tired. submitted by /u/romanticheart to r/cats [link] [comments]

AITA for telling my mom I’m staying with dad full time until I don’t have to share my room
I (15f) live one week with my dad and another with mom. They divorced 3 years ago and my mom has been dating John for a year. John and I don’t hate each other but not close. We all live in the same town as most my dad’s side of the family so other than my music lesson I also hung out a lot with my cousins and didn’t spend a lot of time around John. A month ago John and his daughter Trisha (11f) moved in temporarily into my house because there was a fire at theirs. My house has 2 bedrooms so Trisha has to stay in my room. My bed is a bunk bed because I was getting a sister but my mom miscarried. Trisha and I hung out only a few times before this but I can say the same about her and John—I don’t hate her. But she turns out to be hard to live with. She has long hair and her hair is everywhere. She talks in her sleep and I was woken up 5 or 6 times since her stay. She also sometimes tried to speak to me when I already turned off my lamp, a sign that I was going to sleep. I talked to my mom and she said I needed to be nicer to her since she’s been through a lot. That my issues were just minor inconveniences. That Trisha would be back at her own home soon (in late January). I talked to my dad and he said I could just move in with him until Trisha leaves. I then packed my bags and told my mom I’ll be staying at dad’s. She blew up at me, saying what a spoiled brat I am and that I’m making John and Trisha feel horrible for imposing. I just left. It’s been a week now and my mom never reached out to me. She dropped my Christmas presents at my grandma’s because my dad and I would celebrate Christmas there. I don’t think my mom can get the law involved because I’m 15 and I just have to tell them the living situation and they should understand. Besides, it’s only till I can have my room back again. Still, AITA? submitted by /u/ButterscotchPastry to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITA For going out my bedroom window at 1AM during a storm to climb over to my neighbour's bedroom to fix his loudly banging window so I could sleep? He was not happy to see me hanging out there, silhouetted against the street lamp. Frankly he made quite an undignified fuss about it.
I'd assumed he was out because he'd not be able to sleep through the banging if I couldn't? Anyway, he saw me hanging at the window like Dracula and made such a frightful noise. You know when you're dreaming and you think you're shouting for help but you wake yourself up and the noise you are making is, "nuraghrurARAAAGAHAH!" It was like that. Pitiable, really. No sangfroid whatsoever. And vampires aren't even real. Anyway, after the initial screaming I was able to explain my reason for hanging there, and he agreed that the window banging was a problem, but he blamed his landlord for not mending it! Which also, to me, showed a lack of gumption. As a renter I'd fix problems as they arose without bothering the landlord. I wouldn't just sit there in my room blubbing like Lucy Westenra as some helpful neighbour took matters into his own hands. It was an easy fix, too, I just wedged it shut with a load of blu tak. Which I never got back, actually. Also, it was quite a tricky climb. It's not a hobby I've ever gone in for. At one point I had my feet on something but my hands down near them pulling upwards to stay on the wall, which really didn't feel safe. This happened years ago but another post on here about someone coming in to a house at night reminded me of it. I won't say it led to a rift between me and the neighbour, but there was a coldness thereafter. Edit: Reading your judgments has been interesting! I do seem to be a less sound person than I thought, both ethically and mentally. I can accept that I am an asshole, if maybe a rakish, gentleman diamond thief kind of asshole. A loveable rogue, if you will. Thank you all for an entertaining and enlightening evening. Edit2: this is probably me being too sensitive but I didn't like people saying I had made it up so I got my diary out of the loft and took a picture of that page. I don't know if anyone can zoom in and see that it was printed on a word processor? Also the details aren't quite as I remember them. I know it doesn't constitute proof and I guess I could have faked it if I still had a word processor. Final Edit, sorry: This has really taken up a lot of my thoughts lately so I wanted to just explain (for anyone who comes back to reread this post) what was going on in my head when I wrote this. Everything that I describe doing is true, but not what I was thinking. I didn't think that the guy was making a fuss and that vampires aren't even real so what's he scared of. I am seeing it and writing it through the lens of the kind of idiot who would do this and think it was normal, even though I was the kind of idiot who did exactly this, whilst knowing it wasn't normal. I know he was scared of me, and I was scared of him. I was sure there was no-one there. This noise had been going on for weeks, and had often stopped me sleeping, and no-one answered the door because they were students away for the Summer, and I just foolishly assumed on the night of the storm that they still hadn't come back because the window was crashing much too loud for anyone nearby to sleep, and took matters into my own hands like an asshole. But what I love about the situation, and my focus in posting it, was the calm, polite conversation about whose responsibilty it was to fix a noisy, broken window, which actually took place whilst I was still hanging from the guy's window. It's like when Fafhrd meets the Gray Mouser at the scene of a crime, just have a civilized chat, and become lifelong friends. What I wasn't expecting from this was all the stuff about shooting (not a worry in my country), and about how the tenant should never, ever do their own repairs, even if something is a nuisance to the whole street, and people diagnosing me as autistic which seems presumptuous except they mention other things that are also familiar to me and made me wonder a bit, and when people were asking for other stories I thought of three other instances of me being where I shouldn't have been like a maniac. Everything is also true in the comments apart from the bits about ripping a cloak and wearing skin, which I just put in to go with the theme of people saying what if I really was a vampire. Finaler Edit: The type of houses. submitted by /u/Jonseroo to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
