After what took me far longer than I thought, I finally finished this lounge chair that I designed in Fusion 360. This is my second woodworking project. It was much harder than I thought, and honestly the hardest thing I’ve ever built. Nearly every technique I used to build this had to be researched before being implemented. Last year I purchased a Curverk lounge chair (A++ Taller Ultra Premium option) after doing quite a bit of research. I was extremely happy with the customer service and build quality — everything about it felt solid, well-finished, and worth the money. After almost a year of daily use, it still looks great with zero issues. Recently, I decided to pick up another one for my office and thought I’d save a few bucks by going with a cheaper replica from Amazon that had great reviews. I knew it was a bit of a gamble — and unfortunately, it didn’t pay off. Here’s the one I ordered: 👉 Amazon Listing – Eames Style Lounge Chair Replica (Style 1, Upgraded & Tall options) While the laminate is on both sides of the shell, the quality just doesn’t compare to the Curverk. The edges aren’t as clean, the leather feels cheaper, and the cushions are noticeably imperfect. The buttons aren’t aligned properly, and even though they’re velcro’d on (so you can cheat it a bit), it still looks off. I’m admittedly pretty OCD, and since this chair will sit behind me in Zoom meetings, I know I’d constantly notice those imperfections. I’m also concerned about the longevity — if it only lasts a couple of years, it’s not worth the money saved. I’ve already set up a return for the Amazon chair and ordered another Curverk. There are definitely levels to these replicas, and for me, the Curverk (especially the A++ Taller Ultra Premium version) is easily worth the extra cost. 📸 Photo reference: - The first five images (in my office) are the Amazon chair. - The photos in the living room show my original Curverk chair. Maybe I just don't get it because I don't own one, but owning the chair just seems so cliche at this point. When I see a picture with it, my first thought isn't "Wow, this person has style" but rather "Wow, this person will buy literally anything that they are convinced is 'cool'." The number of pictures with an Eames seems so disproportionate to the number of people who actually should buy an Eames--like, for most people I'm sure there are better ways they can improve the style of their place for $3,000+ than one chair. That being said, at the end of the day, you do you. But I'm sort of over that chair. ​ A little over a year ago I put together a small group buy of Eames replica lounge chairs from Yadea. The group consisted of myself, a friend and a couple of people from work. It totaled five chairs; I bought two. I corresponded with Frank at Yadea for a few weeks prior to placing the order. My wife and I decided that the Italian leather option would be best for us, considering our three young children. My two colleagues each bought the aniline version, and so that’s been nice to compare. After a year my wife and I are extremely pleased. The chairs are durable and the fit and finish is well beyond what we paid. After a year each chair has broken in nicely and both possess the qualities one expects to see emerge in well-made leather furniture. The leather is soft and supple and obviously durable given the wear it’s already seen. It also cleans up nicely with Weiman’s spray leather cleaner. The construction is rock solid in general and I expect to get many, many years out of the chairs. Moreover, everyone in the group has been as pleased as us. I’ve only actually touched and sat in one of the aniline chairs, but for as happy as I am with the Italian leather on ours the aniline is ridiculous. It’s butter smooth and looks spectacular. What’s more, the aniline was only $35 more per chair. I do not regret purchasing the Italian version but if I weren’t worried about spilled milk, greasy hands, writing utensils, etc then the aniline would have been a no-brainer. Since it was over a year ago I am now a little fuzzy on all the details. I did a ton of research and learned quite a bit about Eames replicas, but with no problems since and being quite pleased with our purchase I don’t have a reason to keep up on all this stuff. I do remember that the order came out to an average of about $850 per chair, but keep in mind this was with all five shipped to my residence in Indiana. The only negative worth mentioning (besides the fifty-day wait on shipping!) is that while the plywood is beautiful there are several rough-to-the-touch areas. For example just under my right armrest there is an area which feels like it wasn’t sanded down adequately or wasn’t properly cleaned prior to the finish coat. Not a big deal to me (after all my hands are on a laptop or a book the vast majority of the time I’m in the chair) but I can see how some people might be bothered by this. Anyway, if you’re thinking of jumping on one of the group buys my recommendation is to do it. I’ll answer all the questions I can, should you have any.
