I am going to be building a bit of an outdoor kitchen but due to its position its not really possible to cover it. What work surface would be the best as an all weather work surface left to the elements? I guess wood would need lots of maintenance so maybe granite? At our previous house, we had a big freestanding braai, but it was so bulky and heavy that we left it behind when we moved. Luckily had a little extra money back from the close of escrow and was able to get this project done way quicker than I expected. Solo project and took about 3 weeks in my spare time in the evenings/weekend. Didn’t have the budget for a full built in outdoor kitchen and wanted something a bit more modular. Went with a Monument 4 burner with the side sear and a Rectec Patio Legend. My wife really wanted a griddle so I snuck in a Royal Gourmet 4 burner griddle I found on sale. It took me about 2 months and a TON of YT videos lol I started with extending our lanai with some pavers, added this aluminum pergola, and had a concept in mind for the kitchen and gave it my best shot. It’s not 100% finished. I am going to stucco the back and also add this little propane door thing I saw so I don’t have to constantly remove the propane tank from under to make pizza. Everything is DIY except laying the quartzite which is a white Taj quartzite. It’s about 10 x 12 L. As the title says, its finally finished, we'll kinda*. After a couple of long months I am using it and loving it. Did the frame myself using BBQTubes. Contracted the brick and granite countertops. Did as much as I could myself. Which is why it took so long. Ask me anything you'd like. Took tons of notes on labor amd cost. A ton of gotcha's and lessons learned. Wife: “We’re hosting a baby shower.” Me: “Cool, we’ll… uh… sit on the grass?” Also me, two months later: Venetian fence, garden beds, lighting, and a full-on outdoor kitchen. Before this, I’d never built a single thing — not even a fence. After scrolling through all your epic projects, I figured… why not? What I actually did: • Built a Venetian-style fence (and slapped some lights on it so it looks fancy at night) • Made flower beds and planted them up • Built an outdoor kitchen from scratch (timber frame + cement board) What I didn’t do: • The porcelain patio — it’s on a slope and I like my sanity. Hired a pro for that bit. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and it was ready in time for the shower. It was my dream to do more outdoor living so we totally changed our lives, moved to a warmer climate and it’s been great for the soul. We paid for a large covered area and concrete, but I winged the bbq area and we couldn’t be happier. I framed it, and stucco’d it. My wife mixed all the concrete in a wheelbarrow and I installed the countertops as fast as she could mix it. The countertops are 31’ long. People asked about how much everything costed us, I don’t have an exact breakdown because I bought and returned so much to home depot that I’ve lost track but I’ll give a quick breakdown. The outdoor covered area $25k The concrete $8k. Plumbing and gas line $2,200 Electrical $1,800 After those major purchases we did most of the rest of the work. These are approximate prices: Treated Lumber for framing $600 Special stucco (comes in 5 gallon premixed buckets) $600 Forms for pouring the concrete $500 Countertop concrete $1000 Stain and sealers for concrete) $300 Sink and faucet $300 Stainless doors off of Amazon (6 double doors total) $600ish Flat top burner $1200 4 burner cooktop 800 Hood vent $200 (almost brand new on Facebook marketplace) AMG dual fuel grill $2000 (this is the best deal of my life, I bought is 3 years old in like new condition from a rich guy who was moving, these retail for over $13k on Amazon. In my opinion it’s not worth that price but it was a steal for me.) I have a background in construction, so I was able to figure out the building aspect but I watched a lot of YouTube videos.
