AITA for asking to have my name removed from condo patio request?
I live in a condo building. We have a small sahred patio, nothing fancy, but we love it. Like a week ago neighbor posted in chat that she wanted to replace lights there. She found option for about $200 and said that if a few people put in some money, it would come out to about $30-40 per person. I agreed to contribute up to $40 for the lights. A few days ago, I received eamil from condo board. Email included a list of residents supporting project and my name on it. I opened attachment and saw that it wasn't just lights anymore. It included outdoor rug, decorative pillows, planters, new chairs and delivery fee. The total amount was nearly $900. My name was listed next to the full project, not just the lights. But we didn’t agree on these, I (as other of my neighbors) agreed to contribute only to lights. I messaged her privately at first and told her that I hadn’t supported the entire plan. I had only agreed to the lights and only up to $40. I asked her to correct the request herself before the board reviewed it or to remove my name. She replied that it was all part of a single idea and that the board takes requests more seriously when it sees resident support. Then she said she wouldn’t change anything now because it would cause confusion and delays. I said she could have found more people to join, but she just ignored it. So having no other option I replied to the condo board myself. Once again, I support replacing the patio lights up to $40. I did not approve the full patio refresh and the attached budget as it was too expensive. After that two more neighbors wrote similar comments. Condo board asked her to revise request. Now my neighbor says me and others have embarrassed her and derailed community improvement project because of our green and wording. How could I clean these outdoor polyester pillows? Marks are from the coconut fabric of the pergola cover above.
The couch is under a pergola with a coconut thread cover (last picture). The rain has caused what I believe is dye from the cover to leak on the pillows. The cover no longer drips, but I just can't get the marks out. I tried rubbing extra hard with water and soap, but it won't disappear. Any idea? submitted by /u/divonelnc to r/CleaningTips [link] [comments]

New chairs for IKEA arrived. A single piece of molded plastic perfectly combining form function and affordability. Covers well with pillow or blanket, a market is outdoor patio but Ill use it any damn where I please.
Honestly one of my secret loves in this world is finding tools, clothes, furniture and other objects that well built and versatile in their application. Take: black ankle socks for instance, they go with most clothing, wash easy, and cover right above the ankle so they're just warm enough to be worn in the winter but not too hot in summer. Similar concept with dark jeans or futon bed/couches I like my creature comforts to be multifunctional. I want the products I consume to live up to my ideals submitted by /u/Playful-Succotash-99 to r/evilautism [link] [comments]

Gustavo: The boy who saved himself has no more ringworm!
Gustavo is finally ringworm free, no more sweaters! He can finally realize his dream of being a nudist. Rabies QT is over March 1 then hes getting neutered. After that, he'll meet the rest of his roommates. For context, he hung out with me over the summer as a restored a car. We assumed he was indoor/outdoor as we never saw him at night. Turns out he was sleeping below my steps. Buddy begged us to take him in the first night it hit freezing and he was so sweet that we couldnt say no. He had a tail wound that has since healed, ringworm that has been defeated, and soon he will lose his trouble pillows. submitted by /u/LowkeyEntropy to r/CatDistributionSystem [link] [comments]

At my wits' end
I have a 1 year and 2 month old female, sterilised Bengal. She get regular check ups and is full vaccinated, has 24/7 access to the outdoors through a small cat flap, and is fed day round dry feed and 2-3 times a day given wet food. Everyone who sees her falls in love with her, thinks she's gorgeous, really confident and playful. Except me. I can't stand her. She's not the first cat I've owned, but she is the first Bengal, and the reason for this is my partner's cat allergy, and the fact that we live in Scotland, and this was the only Hypoallergenic type breed we were able to find here and test his allergy with. My issue is, she's an absolute menace. She has access to the outdoors, with a big garden, away from main roads. We have a 2.5 year old Cockapoo who loves chasing her and they often rough and tumble in the garden or even in the living room (no accidents yet, I'm lucky). She's got access to a floor to ceiling scratching pole in the living room, another scratching pole in my office, we play with her twice a day with a cat wand, we got her a flopping fish toy, a tunnel, several boxes she likes playing in (see picture) and an igloo shaped cat bed with a pillow, but no matter what I try in terms of enrichment, she ALWAYS finds the one thing to do that sets me off. - Jumps on the sound bar in front of the television. - Jumps in the bookshelves behind the television and knocks down books and games. - Jumps on the kitch counter where we used to keep her food. - Jumps onto the laundry hamper, then falls in and is upset (but keeps doing it again and again) - Swats at my Monstera plant leaves - Swats and chews on the fairy light (but somehow has left the Christmas tree alone) - Claws at the carpet at the bottom of a closed door, but then when we open the door she doesn't go in. - Jumps on the dresser in the bedroom and climbs behind the tv (which is a hazard as TV can fall over). - Jumps inside my bookshelf and climbs inside a stash of paper gift bags (then falls off the shelf and stays inside the bags) And on, and on, and on. But it's not like she doesn't understand. There's plenty other things we taught her how to do that she's managed to pick up fine. She doesn't jump on the table, nor on any other part of the kitchen counter where we didn't keep her food. She comes when her name is called, is happy being fed a tube treat, cutely sleeps on the same pet bed as our dog and leaves her alone when she indicates she doesn't want to play. But no matter how I dissuade her from doing these particular things I don't like, from calmly picking her up and putting her down, to scaring her away with something, or picking her up and putting her in a different room or outside as "punishment", it never stops. And she only does is when we're around. We work from home and she's almost never alone for long, but when she is and we come back, there's nothing knocked off the shelves, the laundry hamper hasn't fallen over, there's no trace of her having done anything other than lie in her hanging bed and eat. On top of this, she's not giving me any of the cat benefits that my previous cats did. She hates being picked up, she doesn't sleep/lie on our laps, she doesn't curl up next to me on the sofa or bed, she barely lets me pet her without swiping or biting (not to hurt but to indicate she doesn't like it). So I have a terrorist in my house who's not giving me any emotional repayment to make up for it. So Reddit, what am I missing? I've given her all the enrichment she could possibly want, she's healthy, reasonable free to go where she wants, no obvious needs missed. But I can't go on like this. EDIT: I honestly don't know what I expected from posting on Reddit, except that my experience with this sub was more positive than most. I appreciate I haven't put everything relevant in my post here, but it's not like I've done no research like everyone is suggesting. I know Bengals need more stimulation, and attention, but I can't make playing with my cat a part-time job. Suggesting anyone plays with their cat 1.5-2 hours a day is simply not realistic for lots of families out there, and to suggest that they then shouldn't have a Bengal isn't fair either. Lots of cats are solitary creatures and can entertain themselves very well, and it's not like we don't play with her either, we do. Bengals aren't untrainable, and that's what I was hoping to learn here. I tried the advice that I read online, to pick them up from wherever they were being "bad" and take them away from the situation, but this advice doesn't seem to work for this cat unfortunately. From the few people that did give genuine advice and understand that humans don't have unlimited time to play with cats, I'm going to try the redirection technique. Regarding the going outside or being an indoor cat, this will always be a divisive issue and we're never going to agree on it. My vet okayed it for her to go outside so that's what I'm doing. You keep your cat inside if that's what's best for you. submitted by /u/Mee_Kuh to r/bengalcats [link] [comments]

This is why I rarely leave five-star reviews, so if you’re an owner, here’s a tip…
Just wrapped up a four-night stay in New Mexico. Owner request five-star review w their checkout message, but it’s not happening. Place was solid throughout but lacked one of the most important things: comfortable bedding. Mattresses matter. A lot. Same goes for pillows, sheets and blankets. I may not use your fire pit, pool, hot tub, outdoor grill, retro record player, board games, fancy stove or any of your other neat amenities, but I promise you that me, my guests and every one else who rents your property will spend about 1/3rd of their entire stay in the beds/bedding you provide. Please invest in quality mattresses and frames. Spend a few bucks for decent pillows, too. And while you’re at it, add a comfortable set of sheets—heck, Target sells excellent 400-thread count sheets for under $50. Guests pay note when the bedding is excellent. Ditto when it’s not. For me, it’s ALWAYS the difference between five stars and something less than five. I and my sore back thank you!! EDIT: Should not have used the word “comfortable” to describe the mattress bc what I commenting on was “quality.” The mattress in our VRBO was trash. Sagging and ancient. Box spring that creaked and squealed in pain when we moved. Terrible support. That’s the point I was trying to make here: Just pls give guests a quality mattress of medium firmness (or maybe a firm mattress with a pillow top like one poster suggested). There is no pleasing everyone on comfort, agreed, but quality is quality. Same for pillows and sheets. Peace out, y’all, and sweet dreams!😴 submitted by /u/Hey_Hi_Its_A_Guy to r/vrbo [link] [comments]

These ARE OUR people!
These are OUR people. Out of 238 men, 179 have ZERO criminal record, not here or abroad! Yet, they have been arrested without due process, sent to a torturing prison in El Salvador for the amusement of a Theo-Fascist regime of plutocrats and oligarchs! This is what A modern concentration champ looks like. The facts: "Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo” or (CECOT), the prison in El Salvador where the Trump admin is sending men that they believe are “in gangs”, with no due process. Again, the overwhelming majority of these humans have No. Criminal. Record—Whatsoever. 75% have clearer backgrounds than a lot of the people you know. The names of possibly innocent men are towards the bottom of this post. I’m going to try to break this down in easy to understand sections. About CECOT Designed and completed in 2023 in response to overcrowding in other El Salvador prisons. Built to house up to 40,000 inmates. For the “worst of the worst” gang members. Its aim is to be a PERMANENT solution, no rehabilitation, no return to society. The justice minister bluntly stated that prisoners at CECOT will “never return to their communities.” 8 pavilions with 256 cells. Cells house 80 - 100 men, sometimes more. 100 square meters in size. 19 guard towers, multiple layers of fencing, 24/7 surveillance. CECOT officials refuse to disclose actual population. DAILY REGIMEN Total lockdown. Prisoners are confined shoulder to shoulder in their cells 23.5 hours a day. No outdoor time whatsoever. Fluorescent lights remain on 24 hours a day. They have no sense of time and no sleep cycle. They receive 30 minutes a day of tightly controlled corridor exercise. No jobs, no classes, no books, no programs of any kind. Nothing. CCTV watches prisoners 24 hours a day like “silent Gods.” COMMUNICATION AND ISOLATION No visits from family or lawyers. No letters or phone calls. All cell signal is blocked for a 1.5 mile radius. Mass virtual trials via video link with up to 900 prisoners at a time. Most inmates have never been formally charged or sentenced. DISCIPLINE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONTROL Prisoners arrive barefoot and shackled with their heads bowed. Forced to kneel in tight rows with their heads shaved upon arrival. If they are to be punished, they are put into an even smaller cell that is completely dark. Swift violence for perceived “disobedience” or breaking of any rule. No sunlight, ever. No clocks. No time markers. Inmates experience “profound psychological deterioration.” Juveniles, around the age of 16, are in cells with hardened gang members. Inmates are required to be “alert and obedient” at all times during the day. Most sit idly. They are often required to remain silent. The rest of the time they remain mostly silent out of fear. Some inmates have reportedly lost their voices from prolonged silence and stress. Journalists who have been allowed in reported an atmosphere of “unnatural, tense silence.” The guards are armed and wearing balaclavas to increase fear. LIVING CONDITIONS Sleep + Each cell is designed for 80 people, but often it far surpasses 100. + Inmates sleep on concrete floors without mattresses or on iron bunk tiers where they must lay across the metal slats. + Cells are so crammed full they sleep standing up or take turns laying down. + No pillows or blankets. Food + Meals are minimal, rice and beans. Sometimes a tortilla. Sometimes an egg. + No utensils, prisoners eat with their hands. + Water is extremely limited. They share a jug within their cells. + Malnutrition is common and has been contributed to multiple deaths. Hygiene + Each cell has 2 toilets and 2 sinks for 80+ men. + No privacy, ever. Constant filth and foul smells. + Bathing and “laundry” is done by buckets inside the cell. + Diseases are rampant. TB, scabies, fungal infections, stomach illnesses. + NO outside medical care is allowed, ever. + Over 350 inmates have died and most were due to medical conditions or abuse from guards. + If someone falls gravely ill, they are treated (if at all) in an on-site infirmary. “No prisoner ever leaves the premises alive” for medical care outside, a CECOT official told journalists, a chilling acknowledgment that even medical transfers are off the table. ABUSE AND VIOLENCE Much of the abuse is only recorded from President Bukeles former facility, the secrecy and lack of oversight at CECOT makes all reporting difficult. Nobody comes out, and dead bodies are viewed through photos. Human rights inspectors are denied access. Beating by guards are common, especially upon first arrival. One man temporarily detained said he watched guards beat all new arrivals for an hour straight. When he tried to tell the guards he was wrongfully detained, they broke his ribs and threw him in a “dark hole” with 320 other men who also beat him. Reported use of water torture and extended kneeling. “Simulated drowning” has been repeatedly reported. Guards often choose to humiliate. At the former CECOT facility, guards would strip inmates naked, push their faces into ice water until they nearly drowned while calling them “dogs” and “scum.” Solitary confinement is used as punishment. In the 350+ deaths since 2022, there were signs of asphyxiation, fractures and blunt trauma seen in photos. Bodies are buried in mass graves, with no family notification. Rival gangs are mixed together as punishment. Government claims gang hierarchy is broken, reports suggest otherwise. One of the few people ever released from CECOT said they often had to sleep and live next to the corpses of their cell mates until the guards got around to removing them. Another man said they had to kneel for hours and if someone collapsed from exhaustion, they would “drag them out like an animal.” He said many of the men there were “not even gang members.” LEGAL Held without trial. Virtually NO releases Officials state openly they will never leave. Many are serving decade long sentences without a trial. The United States has sent 238 perceived Venezuelan gang members, 179 with no criminal records in the U.S. or abroad, under a $6,000,000 a year deal. Humans rights refer to it as a “transnational penal colony” and a U.S. judge has referred to it as “wholly lawless.” President Bukele has acknowledged that thousands of men in El Salvador prisons were “actually innocent”. Many of those men were released from those prisons, but prisoners in CECOT go through a one way door. TESTIMONIES FROM INSIDE CNN and CBS report that inmates sleep on concrete or bare steel. Gang members claim it “breaks them emotionally.” Inmates describe it as a place of “torture and death.” Witnesses report having to sleep next to dead cell mates. Guards claim “brutality is necessary.” Police whistleblowers have admitted innocent men have been detained and abused. One guard stated “they have nothing, so they have nothing to lose.” HUMAN RIGHTS AND GLOBAL RESPONSE Condemnation from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Inter-American Comission on Human Rights CECOT violates Nelson Mandela Rules (UN Standard of Prisoner Treatment) Cristosal reported 3,300 violations in the first year alone. Human rights organizations refer to it as a “black hole for human rights”. Some things I’d like to add: Our country has sent innocent men here, we already know that. Some for tattoos that they misunderstood, some from “administrative errors”, some have been swept up simply for being neighbors, family or friends of the “perceived gang members.” These men go into CECOT knowing they will never see or hear from their families again. Imagine being innocent? Is this what you really wanted, MAGA? Do you think Jesus thinks this treatment of his children is ok? Or do you understand human rights exist for a reason? What does your gut tell you? If you know this is wrong, please help us. Please get involved. He didn’t tell you he was going to do this, you didn’t vote for this cruelty. The best time to do the right thing was the election, but the second best time is right now. Use your voice. ——————————————————- NAMES OF MEN WHO MAY BE WRONGFULLY INCARCERATED AT CECOT The names of the men we need to push to get back or at minimum, due process: Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old Salvadoran national and Maryland resident, was mistakenly deported to El Salvador’s Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) prison in March 2025. Despite a 2019 U.S. immigration judge’s order protecting him from removal due to credible fears of gang persecution, Abrego Garcia was apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 12, 2025, during a routine check-in. He was subsequently deported on March 15, with the Trump administration later acknowledging the action as an “administrative error.” Andry José Hernández Romero: A 31-year-old gay Venezuelan makeup artist seeking asylum in the U.S., Hernández Romero was deported based on tattoos interpreted as gang symbols. His attorney clarified that these tattoos were religious and cultural symbols common in his hometown. Despite having no criminal record and a credible asylum claim, he was sent to CECOT, where concerns for his safety have been raised due to his sexual orientation and the prison’s notorious conditions. Jose Franco Caraballo Tiapa: A barber who entered the U.S. seeking asylum, Caraballo was detained after an immigration officer noticed a tattoo of a clock on his arm, symbolizing the time of his daughter’s birth—a common design in Venezuela. Despite lacking a criminal record and having a pending asylum case, he was deported to CECOT under allegations of gang affiliation. Jerce Reyes Barrios: A 35-year-old former professional soccer player from Venezuela, Barrios fled persecution and sought asylum in the U.S. He was detained and deported due to tattoos, including one resembling the Real Madrid logo, which authorities misinterpreted as gang-related. Despite providing evidence of his innocence and lack of criminal history, he was sent to CECOT. E.M.: Identified only by initials for safety, E.M. fled Venezuela with his girlfriend to Colombia before being granted refugee status in the United States. Upon his arrival in Houston, he was detained and deported based on tattoos of a crown, soccer ball, and palm tree, common symbols in Venezuelan culture. His family was not informed of his deportation and later discovered his fate through media reports. Francisco Javier García Casique: A 24-year-old Venezuelan hairdresser, García was deported and featured in a Salvadoran government video showcasing shackled prisoners. His family and advocates assert he has no gang affiliations and was wrongfully detained based on superficial indicators like tattoos. Mervin Jose Yamarte Fernandez: a Venezuelan national, was deported despite having no criminal record. He was apprehended during a routine immigration check-in, with authorities citing alleged gang affiliations based on superficial indicators. He is currently detained in CECOT, with ongoing legal efforts seeking his return. Jhon Chacin: a Venezuelan tattoo artist, sought asylum in the U.S. After his asylum application was denied, he agreed to voluntary deportation to Venezuela. However, his flight was rerouted, and he was instead sent to CECOT in El Salvador. Chacin remains imprisoned in CECOT, with his family and legal representatives advocating for his release. Maiker Espinoza Escalona: Espinoza Escalona was detained by U.S. authorities and held at Guantanamo Bay before his deportation. Despite legal challenges and a court order prohibiting such deportations, he was sent to CECOT on March 17, 2025. He is currently incarcerated in CECOT, with limited information available about his well-being. HOW TO HELP Raise Public Awareness • Speak out on social media • Share the stories of men like Andry José Hernández Romero and Jose Caraballo Tiapa, whose cases highlight the injustice and lack of due process. • Tag journalists, members of Congress, and human rights organizations when sharing posts to increase visibility. Contact Your Representatives If you’re in the U.S. (or another democratic country), contact your elected officials and ask them to: •Demand accountability for wrongful deportations, especially of asylum seekers. • Pressure the State Department to work with El Salvador for the release of innocent detainees. • Support oversight of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). You can use sample language like: “I’m calling to express deep concern about the deportation of Venezuelan asylum seekers to El Salvador’s CECOT prison, where many are held without charges under abusive conditions. I urge you to call for their return and an investigation into this violation of due process.” Support Legal and Human Rights Groups Donate to or volunteer with organizations that are actively working on these issues: • Human Rights Watch (HRW) • Amnesty International • ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project • RAICES • Cristosal (El Salvador-based human rights org) • International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) These groups can: • Help mount legal cases. • Collect testimonies. • Apply international pressure. • Assist families of the detained. Engage Media and Petition Platforms • Start or sign petitions demanding that the U.S. and Salvadoran governments release innocent detainees from CECOT. • Share firsthand accounts, where available, to humanize the crisis and move it out of the “policy” category and into the public conscience. Pressure International Bodies • Write to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights or the United Nations Human Rights Council. • Demand they investigate abuses in CECOT and intervene diplomatically. • Urge them to monitor deportations from the U.S. for violations of international refugee law. Connect with Families and Survivors • If you’re able, amplify the voices of affected families, especially those with loved ones trapped in CECOT. • Many are already speaking out through platforms like CBS News, The Guardian, and El País, reaching out or supporting those efforts can magnify impact." AITA for "Permanently Destroying" my cousin's hand me down wedding dress?
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/person_shaped Originally posted to r/CharlotteDobreYouTube AITA for "Permanently Destroying" my cousin's hand me down wedding dress? Editor’s note: added paragraph breaks for readability Trigger Warnings: accusations of property damage Original Post: August 5, 2024 I, (18f) am getting married in the middle of October to my boyfriend (19m). We're planning on a smaller-scale wedding with mostly just friends and family, and considering that we both have large extended families it was definitely a challenge planning for that many people. (For a general idea of how big my family is, just my mom has 7 siblings who all have children of their own). With our small budget, I was looking at redesigning or upcycling a wedding gown instead of having to devote a huge amount of money towards a brand new dress. I mentioned my plans to a couple people and was in the process of looking at options when my mom's oldest sister's daughter (my cousin) reached out to me. Megan, (40f) got married in 2015. The marriage didn't last very long and they got divorced soon after. I barely remember the husband, as he never came to family gatherings and Megan and my mom aren't particularly close, so I was surprised she was offering something so important after a long time of distance. Regardless, Megan had offered to give me her wedding dress, as it was in my size and she knew we were trying to avoid spending a crazy amount on a small budget. I loved the idea and the dress was beautiful. I did make sure she was comfortable giving it to me rather than loaning it, and she assured me that it held no emotional significance and she couldn't care less if she didn't have to hang on to it. I thanked her and took home the dress. One thing about me however is that I am a very chaotic seamstress, and I make the majority of my own clothes. And while I did love the original dress, I wanted to make some SMALL changes to the hem and neckline to fit the theme better. The original dress was super full-skirted with a long hem, and since my wedding is outside, I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be dragging in the dirt. So I took some layers off the underside, removed the trim, and removed the sleeves to tighten the bodice. I was so happy with how it turned out, and my mom and friends agreed that it was perfect. Here's when the trouble started. My mom had taken a picture of me trying on the dress and decided to send Megan a picture alongside another Thank You. However she responded with a cold comment over text and called me later that night. She said that I should have asked her permission before "ruining" her dress, and that if I had thought it was so ugly before I should have bought my own. I tried to explain that the changes I made were small, and that I did ask before I took it if she wanted it back afterwards. She blew up at me saying that it was "too different" and that she could never wear it again, (even though she never gave the impression that she wanted to. Megan has already started before that she has no interest in getting remarried ever) I asked what she wanted me to do, and she snapped at me that it was too late. She hung up and has apparently been telling people I "slutted out her wedding dress" and made sure I would embarrass her by out-doing the original dress. I don't know what to do about it, the wedding is way too close to consider making myself a dress, and I have my heart set on having something unique and personal for my wedding. Her mother called both me and my mom saying I should have asked, that I am a "spoiled brat" for taking advantage of Megan's kindness and generosity. My parents and a few family members who I've told think I should uninvite Megan and just wear the dress, but my aunt is saying I would "break Megan's heart" unless I find something else. Should I give up on my dress and see what else there is? To provide some context and answer some questions, Megan and I are not super close, from both the age gap and different lifestyles. (Megan is the third cousin out of 21; I am the ninth.) Megan, being the first girl child in the family, grew up with a lot of expectations and pressure, and ended up marrying a very religious and controlling husband. After her divorce, Megan went through what can best be described as a breakthrough and reevaluation of her life and ambitions. Since then, she completely changed her job, apperance, and opinions. She is no longer an active member in family events and only takes part in "important" ones like birthdays, funerals, and weddings. Despite this we have NEVER had any problems between us and our interactions have always been civil and kind. Secondly, the alterations I did were only limited to the skirt and bodice. The "slutted-out" comment apparently stemmed from my removal of the sleeves, (turning it to a sleeveless top) and raising the hem to a tea length. (My ankles are exposed now.) Someone had pointed out to me that Megan's anger was a product of her own self-esteem, as she has naturally grown and gained weight since then, which I could definitely see even though she is still beautiful. And thirdly, I am definitely planning on regular updates if any more incidents happen up to the wedding, and a full breakdown with photos after the ceremony. Thank you to everyone for their kind messages and loving support. You've all made me feel so much better and I appreciate you taking the time to comment. UPDATE: As of yesterday, I found out from my fiance that Megan had reached out to him with false concern about how my home-styled dress "gave the wrong idea" about our wedding and had the AUDACITY to ask him, the man I've been in love with for nearly three years, if he was sure he wanted to marry a woman who wouldn't "put in the effort" of getting a proper dress. (She says this as if I hadn't spent WEEKS sewing the dress to make sure it was perfect.) Thank goodness my fiance wasn't upset by her attitude and responded that I had put way more effort into the dress than she put into her marriage, and that shut her up REAL fast. She turned around and apparently has been crying to my elderly grandparents, her mother, some of the other cousins, etc, that I am a "trashy whore with a cheap shotgun wedding" (I'm not even pregnant lmao) with a fiancee who is only interested in our family's money. (My fiance is a mechanic, and regardless of the fact that he is doing really well and makes a pretty good salary, she still seems to think he's beneath her.) Some of my older cousins; the ones I don't talk to as much, have actually expressed concern about whether or not they want to go the ceremony at all. I blame my aunt for spreading misinformation, which I managed to assure them wasn't true. After all of this, I reached out to Megan saying that because of all her comments and insults she is no longer invited to the wedding. I admitted that I was sorry for the situation but I can't keep pardoning her rude comments on what is supposed to be a happy time in my life. She snapped that she wouldn't show her face at my pathetic excuse for a wedding, and that she "can't wait to see how I act when he leaves [me]." Overall, I am pretty confident that Megan and I's relationship might not recover, but at this point I don't regret anything. Here's hoping everything else cools down in the next couple weeks and I can go into our day with no negativity at all. (Am the asshole for altering my cousin's hand me down wedding dress after she told me I could have it?) Top Comments Commenter 1: Wear the dress invite the cousin, use the pieces of the dress to make a decorative pillow for your rings and present it to her at the reception as the best cousin ever for gifting you the dress. It will be a public aaaahhhh moment and you will never hear about it again. Commenter 2: Totally NTA. Your mom blew it by taking photos and posting. That was unfortunate issue #1. Issue #2, do you have that text or email agreement (paper trail) of her "idc about the dress" convo that you can refer back to? Sorry that you're going through this. This isn't something any soon-to-be bride needs to deal with. Truly, sounds like she was more emotionally connected to that dress than she thought. There's nothing you can do at this point other than add a note of appreciation of her "selfless" offering of the dress. 😈 Don't uninvite her, just make sure one of your MOH are watching her on your day. Commenter 3: NTA. If your cousin didn’t want it changed, she should have said, don’t make any alterations. It sounds like you made some sensible changes, don’t let her ruin your day. Commenter 4: Your cousin specifically told you that she was gifting you the dress and she didn't want it back. So now you are the owner of the dress. You can make any changes you want to it. She can't come back later and attach conditions to the gift. It's your dress OP, you should wear it. Let aunt and cousin know that you will be wearing the dress and they are welcome to attend, but you understand if that's too much for them. Update: October 21, 2024 (two months later) Hi everyone! I made a post on this subreddit a few months ago about my (18f) wedding dress and all the surrounding drama that came from it. (I had been given my (40f) cousin's old wedding dress from a failed marriage and altered it to better fit the needs of my ceremony and my style. She did not appreciate the changes and became very rude and hurtful) My wedding was six days ago and I was asked to do an update, and I am happy to share how it all went down! I am still so happy how my dress turned out, and was very glad to have shortened the train, as there had been rain the night before and morning dew on the grass. The shorter hemline saved me a lot of mess and damage in the long run. Plus, I felt beautiful and it made such a special day all the more amazing. I had told my cousin (Megan) that her behaviour was rude and unnecessary, and that I did not want her bringing her unpleasantness to my day. However her mother, who had been one of her primary supporters, had "apologized" in order to go to the ceremony. So while Megan herself was not actually at the wedding, I had not completely excluded the issue. Megan's mother, (71f) my aunt, is your basic senior white woman, and usually expresses her opinions in a loud and unspoken manner, so I was uneasy in the beginning when she arrived. She didn't make a fuss throughout the ceremony though, and everything went smoothly. (I sneezed while walking down the aisle but that wasn't anyone's fault in particular) The reception was at an outdoor garden where we had set up under a gazebo with a temporary floor for tables and eventually dancing, with a slightly elevated platform for the big table and speeches. This is where my aunt decided to make sure everyone knew about her daughter's dress. After a few speeches, following my friend's champagne rendition of "that time we went camping and the tent slid down a hill", she made her way up to the podium. She started her speech in the usual, unassuming way, congratulating us and remarking on how far we've come as people. Unfortunately she decided to tie this statement into a comment of "You've even made your own dress. I mean, not really, actually, it was Megan's first." She then went on into how she remembered shopping for the dress with Megan for her own wedding, and going on and on about how it was perfect and "made for her". At this point in the speech I was just staring at her in confusion, while my husband and everyone else just sat there awkwardly waiting for her to be done. She finished her speech with a half-assed backtrack to me looking lovely and wishing us good luck on our marriage. She ambled back to her seat and let the ceremony keep going, looking entirely too proud of herself. Other than that, the only other trouble she caused was her apparently showing everyone she could manage a photo of the original, which is really not that bad in the grand scheme of things. I am so happy that my family and friends were able to be there and celebrate with us, and can't wait to see what comes for us next. Thank you again to everyone who commented and reassured me in the beginning, you've all been so kind. Who knows, I might even dye the dress another color and keep it around just in case an appropriate event comes up...😉😉😉 Relevant Comments Commenter 1: When you got the dress, did you get permission to alter it? Perhaps there might have been an expectation for it to go back to her when you were done with it. OOP: I did! I mentioned in my original post that I had asked specifically if it was mine to keep and she agreed. That was a big worry of mine in the first place but she told me she had no attachments to it Commenter 2: You should reach out to your Aunt and "thank her" for making a speech showing her support of you and your marriage. You got so many compliments on the work you did to the dress after she pointed out that you did all that yourself. Everyone was super impressed by the before and after pictures, so you wanted to give her a personal thank you. I think that they would've made comments about it being cousins dress, and shown pictures, if you didn't make adjustments. So I think you picked the better path. Commenter 3: Once someone gives you something it is yours to do with as you wish. If she didn’t want you to alter it in any way she should have put that condition on the give. Then that way you could have refused it since it wasn’t as you imagined your dress to be. You weren’t wrong and your aunt and cousin need to suck it up and never mention it again. The saga of Red Wine Girl and an unhinged MIL, seasoned with tasty recipes.
The saga of Red Wine Girl and an unhinged MIL, seasoned with tasty recipes. I am not OOP. OOP is u/Theloniou5. The original post is in r/JUSTNOMIL Learn a new word to avoid spoilers on Mobile App: Concuñado/Concuñada. Phonetic transcription:/ konkuˈɲaðo, konkuˈɲaða / Simplified transcription for non-linguists: /kohn kuh NIA do, kohn kuh NIA da/. From Spanish, 1) Sibling of the spouse of the sibling of a person, IE. The brother of your husband and your sister are concuñados. 2) Spouse of the sibling of the spouse of a person: IE. The wife of the brother of your husband is your concuñada. Trigger Warning: Horrible MIL, humorous mentions of threats of dismemberment and bodily harm. and assault with a pork chop. Mood Spoiler: Kinda satisfactory. The White Dress, Posted on April 23, 2017 This story is about my friends MIL, and her wedding. Strap in guys, this is a wild ride in which I did THE THING that got me banned from any of her family functions. (Plus a few threats of dismemberment and bodily harm) A good friend of mine from university was getting married! They had been a couple since Junior year of college, through her 2 years in the peace corps and currently her return to this continent. 6 years in total. She had been to all manner of family functions and always came back with a strange story about how she thinks her MIL secretly hates her. But she being a very quiet and sweet person pushed those thoughts aside. Point 1: She is vegetarian and jewish, husband is not. She was invited and went to Christmas dinner and figured she would just eat sides, as well she brought a vegetarian casserole. MIL, after knowing her for THREE years, and being told by husband a few weeks before about not to forget friend doesn't eat meat...proceeded to put meat in every dish. Friend drank water and ate her casserole the whole night while MIL cried to everyone that friend was so rude for not eating her cooking. Anyway, back to the story. A few friends and I were asked to be in the wedding. Friend has a HUGE family and so this was not going to be a small affair. Neither of them is particularly religious, but friend said it was would be nice to be married under a hoopa. (Think an arbor but 4 poles and covered with a white cloth and lots of flowers) Husband said he could care less, and told her to go and rent one for the wedding. I was at the bridal shower when MIL found out the "pretty canopy" was actually a hoopa. She almost lost her shit in front of a bunch of people, but managed to compose herself and laugh angrily that "if the jews were being represented so would the catholics." In my head I heard a record screech, guys... they aren't catholic. So after much fighting, a lot of screaming, crying, threatening to pull money (which is funny because she contributed nothing), MIL lost. The boot was firmly placed, and nothing was moving it. Hoopa yes, catholic priest no. Things got stupid quiet, my friend texts me the night before the wedding that she has a bad feeling. I tell her it's probably just nerves, she is getting married and this is a big deal! Oh how wrong I was. We all show up, get our hair and makeup done. Slip into our bridesmaid dresses and hang out waiting for the bride to be finished with her hair. She makes a comment saying she hadn't seen MIL all day and that she skipped her hair and makeup appointment. We all side eyed each other, took a few sips of wine and hoped the eerie feeling would go away. 30 minutes later as we are helping the bride into her dress; guess who shows up. If you guessed MIL, you win a cookie! Flushed from coming up the stairs, (she is not a light woman) in full hair and makeup...and a white dress. Not ivory, not cream, full snow-fucking-white. The dress was clearly a wedding dress; it was even from David's Bridal (which she would later shout at me). Floor length satin with a sweet heart beaded top, a bit of a train and off white lace on the bottom. The dress was even tailored to her, this has been a long con she has orchestrated. The bride burst into tears and aunts and friends ushered MIL out. We did our best to console the bride, touched up her makeup, and I made her a promise that the dress would never be seen in a photo. She looked me dead in the eye and nodded. The game was on. The venue only supplied white wine and champagne for the wedding party. But I grabbed my purse and ran down into the reception area and managed to flag an attendant by the bar and bribe him with a cool 20$ to give me a bottle of red early. I cracked the baby open, filled a solo cup to the brim with it and stalked outside. After a few swigs from the bottle for courage, I went over to where everyone was getting ready to take photos. With one last hard stare at my friend, I got her nod of approval. I pulled out my phone, held it in front of my face like I was reading a text and walked straight into MIL. I poured the entire cup of red wine down the front of her dress, jumped back and gasped. The look on her face was murderous. She screamed, yelled, threatened, and promised she would sue me. People had to hold her back because she wanted to fight me. Eventually she switched from screaming to sobbing and sank to the ground and threw a tantrum on the floor. Everyone moved back and just let her go at it and walked away to go take photos. It was surreal, as if everyone just hit their limit and noped out from around her. The 12 year old flower girl whipped out her phone and snapped a few photos much to our amusement. This is already super long, but I will say that MIL went home and changed (only 20 min from venue) into a nice dark green too small and low cut dress. Because of this she missed all of the photos. Wedding was beautiful; I got death glares from everyone she told that I attacked her with wine. No fucks were given as I drank and danced with friends. Bride thanked me in secret and 3 months later took me to the spa for a day of pampering. But I am officially "that ISIS cunt" to MIL, and I'll take it with pride. EDIT: You guys are awesome! Someone gave me gold?! WINE FOR ALL! In all seriousness, I'm glad you all enjoyed this story. I am not a super hero but I am a woman who has been kicked around a lot due to ethnicity by this MIL and had zero fucks left to give. Lone Ranger style my fight or flight reaction is permanently stuck on fight. The couple has been NC for the last year and half since the wedding. Edit.2: HOLY WAFFLES THIS BLEW UP Edit.3: RIP my inbox! I'm trying to grant you all your cookies! Also, I'm happy to explain the situation but the rude "YOU R LIEING" messages aren't appreciated. And I'm working on those photos! The White Dress PSA, Posted on April 26, 2017 OP here! Hi Everyone! Sorry if this violates anything, but since comments was locked (Thank waffles) on the thread I wanted to put this message out: Holy Waffles guys this is crazy. I can't believe how much this is blowing up. PLEASE stop sending me gold! You guys are so sweet and awesome! But if you really want to gild, please send a donation to the Nation Domestic Violence Hotline instead and help keep the lines of communication open for all. http://www.thehotline.org/get-involved/donate/ You guys all rock my technicolour socks! Edit: My best: I look baller like Maria Hidrissi! OOP posted a photo of the MIL dressed as a bride for her son’s wedding, but the image was deleted Posted on May 31, 2017 EDIT: shoutout to u/loadingdeath because they found the photo of the dress. From the comments I could extrapolate that definitively it was a bridal dress, not a ballgown, not a prom dress, but a freaking bridal dress with beading, lace, tulle and sparkles, complete with bridal white shoes, and also she was kinda dancing with a column as a pole because she wanted a photo shoot in the area where they were do the bridal photos. Also, MIL bragged about ordering the dress from a bridal shop. Absolute Easter Chaos Posted on April 6, 2018 It has been two-ish years since the red wedding incident. NC from the moment that wedding ended has been absolute bliss for my friends. This past weekend was my gal pal’s birthday. And she decided why not have a brunch on Easter on her badass rooftop in the city. So I fired up my cooking skills and make my famous vegetarian, crispy, turmeric, saffron Persian rice with roasted almonds and pomegranate seeds. (Tahdig for all my desert brothers and sisters out here) What does this lovely brunch have to do with my sister from another mister’s MIL she has been NC with for almost 2ish years? I’m glad you asked llamas. Because bitch showed up. I’m not sure who’s Facebook she stalked, or what person she water boarded but she came from out of state and showed up at the front door of their apartment building. I will rewind just a little. Friend and I are setting up on the roof, tossing pillows on the outdoor furniture and laying out some linens on the tables. Their apartment building is only 4 stories high, live on the top floor and are the only apartment with roof access. Because we were not sure that people would hear the buzzer inside of the apartment we put a sign for people to ring the bell and give a shout up to the roof (or text) and we would buzz them in. So I’m meandering about fluffing pillows while happily balancing my mimosa when I hear someone yelling. I figured someone came early and friend went to go lean over the rood edge to see who it was. She immediate reeled back and spun to look at me. “It’s (name redacted)!!” She shouted as she ran for the apartment to stop the hubs from accidently buzzing her in. I peeked over the roof and watched her for a bit. Pacing, freaking out, pulling on the handle of the door. She hit the buzzer maybe 10 times and then looked up and saw me. She was… angry. Flipped me off and went back to tried to yank on the handle and shout something about wanting to give her baby his Easter basket. The woman seemed unhinged. She was in fact carrying one those drug store giant plastic green baskets filled with crap so high to was wrapped in plastic. So I did what any sane person would do, just parked myself there and sipped my mimosa watching her lose her shit and occasionally look up at me and shake her fist. Friend came back with husband and he peeked over to see her pacing like a damn hyena in front of the door. Since people would be arriving soon they worried she would force her way in with others. I posted on the Facebook group a quick rundown on what was happening, so people knew what they were possibly walking into. MIL then had a brilliant idea. She buzzed ALL of the other apartments, hoping someone might let her in, while she continued to call out for her son who at this point was hiding on the roof drinking straight out of the bottle of champagne. Someone let the bitch in. She charged into the building and at this point friend’s husband whipped out his phone and dialed 911. He said and I quote “My unstable mother I haven’t spoken to in 2 years traveled across the country and showed up at my apartment screaming. She just broke in to the building and we are scared she is a danger to us and herself. We live XXX.” I’m pretty sure by the time this “I have bad knees and a thyroid problem” lady made it up the stairs to the 4th floor the cops were rolling up. She never made it inside the apartment. When the cops confronted her she turned sickeningly sweet and begged them while she fake cried to see her baby. She tried to get the cops on her side to talk to him about going with her. Cops were having none of it and asked her if she was invited here and if she knew she was trespassing. Husband went out and told the police he wanted her to leave. This is where shit hit the fan. She lunged for her son and threw the basket at the police and tried to drag husband down the stairs. When he pulled away, she decided to just make a run for it. One of the cops grabbed her arm as she started down the stairs, which threw her off balance and she took the cop tumbling down a flight of stairs with her. There were plastic toys, candy and that crinkly cellophane crap all over the hall and down the stairs. Watching her be put into handcuffs face down in all of was fairly amusing. Friend and I sipped our mimosas from the top of the rail. Trespassing, assault, assault of an office and two more charges are pending. It was a lovely brunch though. Edit: Recipe Tax 3 cups basmati or jasmine rice 4 ½ cups cold water 1 ½ tsp kosher salt 4 TBSP ghee or clarified butter ⅓ cup plain yogurt 1 egg yolk 1 tsp saffron 1 tsp turmeric 4 TBSP ghee or clarified butter 2 TBSP vegetable oil 1 cup toasted slivered almonds ½ cup pomegranate seeds Add 3 cups of basmati rice to a nonstick 4-Qt pot. (Enameled dutch oven is the jam) Wash the rice with cold water, drain and repeat 2 more times. Drain as much of the water as possible. Add 4½ cups of cold water, 1½ teaspoons kosher salt, and 4 tablespoons ghee or clarified butter. Cover the pot and bring it to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to medium low and continue cooking for about 10 minutes, or until all of the water has been cooked off. Remove from the heat. Transfer the par cooked rice to a shallow container and set aside. You will use the same pot to steam the Kateh. Now make the tahdig: Add one egg yolk, ⅓ cup yogurt, saffron and turmeric to a medium bowl. Whisk gently until combined. Use a large spoon to fold in 1 cup of the par cooked rice that is in the shallow container. In the same pot heat 4 tablespoons ghee and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil over medium low heat, until it sizzles. Add the yogurt and rice mixture to the pot and spread evenly to cover the bottom of the pot. Mix in the almonds to the remaining rice and add it to the pot and level off the top and gently pat down with the back of the spoon. (The reason I don't add the almonds in for the rice that is going to be crisped on the bottom, is that the almonds can burn and become bitter) Cover the lid with a damkesh or a large kitchen towel. Steam over medium low heat for 45 minutes to one hour. To serve, remove the lid, place a large serving platter over the pot. Hold the platter and the pot handles and invert the rice onto the platter. Pile pomegranate seeds in the center and some leftover almonds (or parsley) and serve! We eat it as a meal but you can roast chicken or lamb on the side. It pairs well with runny yolk fried eggs. Red Wine Girl and the Adventures with Crazy Bitch Posted on May 15, 2018 Alright party people, this Crazy Bitch MIL needs a name since she apparently isn’t going anywhere. I am writing on behalf of my ultimate bestie who is reddit (and computer) illiterate. Bitch bot will let you in on the juicy details, but yes. I am ‘That Red Wine Bitch’. Anyway, so I guess you are all wondering why I called you here. When we last left off Crazy Bitch MIL was booked for assault on Easter Sunday, after showing up from a few states away and 2 years of NC. She did not post bail and sat in jail until her court date a few days ago. In which a sympathetic judge ignored testimony from the son AND the police officer. Her charges were reduced and she was let go after having to pay a pretty hefty trespassing fee and being told she had to keep her nose clean for a year. So she then saw the error of her ways and pranced home. Yea. Fucking. Right. Let me set the scene, Mother’s Day, 2018. Sunny, warm, with a hint of coastal breeze to make the weather perfect. Friend’s mother lives across the country so they decided to join our friends group at an outdoor event with sunshine, beats, picnic food and booz. We all had a wonderful time on my side of the pond. They left to head home and a few hours later I received a very disturbing phone call from friend. Apparently Crazy Bitch MIL was staking out their apartment. She rented a studio a block away and just so happened to ‘run in’ to them when they were coming home. She was apparently upset that her son didn’t call her for Mother’s Day and wanted to let him know she officially moved here. Even though she literally owns a home in another state! She decided to rent an apartment in one of the most expensive cities in the country. Friend is disturbed, and husband is in shock. He started paperwork on an RO and they got a RING cam just in case. I invited them to stay at my place, because apparently when friend left for work on Monday and Tuesday morning she saw Crazy Bitch MIL sitting in the café across the street reading the paper. Husband has been working from home and trying to figure out alternative ways out of his building. He called some other cousins, aunts and uncles and told them what was going on. They are apparently not shocked. She had been planning this sudden move for YEARS. Spoke non-stop about her son and ME but never mentioned friend beyond making a face at her name. They never thought she would go through with it, and said she disappeared a week before Easter/never showed up to the family dinner. Bitch MIL is stalking me. Awesome. I expect two homeland security guys at my door soon enough. Sigh Friend and Husband are coming over tomorrow to stay for who knows how long. They alerted their landlord who is at least taking the matter seriously and passed out fliers to the other tenants with her name and photo saying she was banned from the building. He is also going to keep an eye on the camera footage by the main door to make sure she doesn’t slip in with deliveries. He’s a great guy, I’m going to send him some cookies. There you have it. I’m gearing up for guests and possibly a cash me outside moment with Crazy Bitch MIL. Ramadan Mubarak! Persian Recipe Tax: Nan e Nokhodchi 1/2 cup vegetable oil 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, sifted 1 teaspoon finely ground cardamom 1/2 tablespoon rose water (if you can get edible rose petals, those too!) 1 and 3/4 cups fine chickpea flour (roasted if you can find it) 2-3 tablespoons chopped or ground pistachios Combine the oil, sugar, cardamom and rose water in bowl. Using a hand mixer, mix on medium for 2-3 minutes until light and creamy. Sift chickpea flour into the bowl and beat on low for 1 minute until the dough is no longer sticky. Dust your work surface with some chickpea flour and knead the dough for 10 minutes until it is more workable. The dough is very crumbly. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and set aside for 2 hours. Do not refrigerate. Preheat oven to 300 F and line baking tray with parchment paper. Roll out the dough on a dusted work surface until it is 3/4-inch thick. Cut out cookies using a 1-inch clover-shaped cookie cutter and place the cookies on the baking tray, spaced 1 inch apart. Re-roll and repeat until all the dough is used up. Sprinkle chopped pistachios on top of each cookie. Place cooking tray in middle rack and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the cookies turn a light golden colour. Remove cookies from oven and let it cool on tray for a few minutes. Then carefully transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Be careful when you transfer the cookies as they crumble very easily. RedWhine, Ramadan and the Pork Chop Posted on May 24, 2018 Hey party people. If you have followed the shenanigans thus far you will know that RedWhine, (Thanks for the name u/clumber ) the crazy MIL that reappeared after 2-ish years of NC to throw metaphorical sugar in my friends gas tank of life. Friend and husband spent a few quiet days at my house across the pond and eventually went back last Sunday. They have been leaving and going through a back exit that their landlord gave them a key to. For a little update, the RO paperwork is in, family has been called to get her ass back to bullshit land and now we just… wait. I appreciate all of the comments here and the people who offered sound advice, my friend and her husband followed a lot of it. My juicy, hilarious and absolutely amazing tidbit for you all actually has to do with me! God I hate love this woman. So it’s Ramadan, and I’m on my fasting game. (Having weird fried chicken dreams) Headed over the pond yesterday to a fast breaking party called Iftar, which is when we are allowed to eat after sunset. Two other people headed to the party and I waited on the corner down from friend’s apartment building. We chatted, showed some memes and waited for them to come meet us. Suddenly I feel this tap on my shoulder. When I turn around I am met with a fried pork chop a few inches from my nose. (It’s kind of a sail on my face) Confusion, more confusion, sudden recognition that RedWhine was standing there holding a pork chop at me. She then starts to gesture WITH the pork chop. “You think you can just corrupt my son?! This COUNTRY?” She pointed the pork chop at me as the two friends I’m with start giggling behind me. And just for reference, they are two hijabis (kind of a slang we call young fashionable women in hijab) and I am not. I am the waist length wild curly hair trying to eat my head person. I pointed at the pork chop and asked why she had it. To which she responded she was waiting for me. UGH… GUYS…. There it totally a leak somewhere! She knew about the time of the Iftar party and was walking around trying to find us with a fucking pork chop! Hijabi 1 asked RedWhine if she was going to eat it, because she was hungry. Which seemed to piss her off since she yelled that she KNEW we didn’t eat pork! At this point I’m DYING; I have that ugly holding back laughter but not breathing face on. Friend and husband come jogging up as she’s lecturing my hijabi friends on their own religion. Something something Trump, deported, and god’s wrath for non believers. (You have to take this crap with a grain of salt) Husband gets between us and is yelling at RedWhine to leave and we all make a hasty exit down the road. I’m walking backwards watching her flail this pork chop around and point it in her sons face. And finally I just can’t hold it and laugh, full belly absolutely cannot hold it back anymore laugh. She points the pork chop over his shoulder at me and WHINES that he is hanging out with terrorists and she can protect him. (Apparently with her pork chop saber!) Husband pulls out his phone and says he’s calling the police, and like fucking smoke she disappears in the other direction. Glorious. Apparently she was telling him to come with her back home, that her sister was coming to get them (her) from our city of Sin and terrorists. We sat at dinner, stuffed our faces and regaled the other party goers of RedWhine the crazy lady who tried to ward us off like vampires with a pork cross. Lamb Tagine 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp butter 2 tbsp blanched almond slivers 2 red onions diced 3 cloves garlic smashed and diced 2 tbsp ginger paste pinch of saffron threads 2 cinnamon sticks 2 tsp coriander seeds crushed 1 lb lamb cubed shoulder or leg 8 dates seeded 8 apricots 4 strips of orange peel 2 tbsp honey 1/2 tsp of Ras el Hanout (optional) (This is a moroccan spice blend) kosher salt and fresh cracked black pepper Instructions Heat the butter and oil in a tagine or heavy casserole baking dish. Stir in the almonds and sauté until golden. Add the diced onions and garlic, stir and cook over low heat until golden. Stir in the ginger paste, saffron, cinnamon sticks and coriander seeds. Add the cubed lamb pieces and stir to make sure everything is coated with the onion and spices. Sauté for 4 minutes. Next pour enough water in to cover the meat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 1 hour or until meat is tender. Add the dates, apricots and orange peel, stir to mix and cover. Simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in the honey and ras-el-hanout (optional) and simmer another 10 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The sauce should be syrupy. If it is too watery, allow to simmer and thicken with lid off for 5 minutes, or add some water if necessary. Top with chopped cilantro and serve along side couscous and bread of choice. Rejoice pork chop wielding army! RedWhine has left the city! Posted on July 27, 2018 This update is… interesting. Friend’s husband called me up a few days ago to sincerely apologize to me for what happened. (for the 100th time) He told me that the very next day she showed up to his apartment and slipped in with the postmaster. He got home from work to find her sitting on his floor a hysterical mess. Mascara running down her face, dirty, crazy hair and smeared lipstick mess. He found out then that she hadn’t actually been paying rent for a place to stay here and had instead been staying at a weekly pay motel. (Which she had not paid in some time and was kicked out) She was broke, homeless and firmly believed the terrorists were after her. Without a beat he called the police and she was taken to lock up. He then called as many family members as he could to tell them she had a psychotic break and someone needed to pick her up. Only her sister showed up the next day and finally took her home. But she does back to come back in 3 months for her hearing of not keeping her god damn nose clean. (harassment and stalking charges) BUT!!!! The judge this time granted the RO. Glory!! Praise be, we have appeased the wine gods! He has only heard snippets from family members, but she seems to be absolutely off the deep end. She is telling anyone that will listen that her trip to our city was AMAZING. She had such a good time. She spent so much time with her son…bonding. But the city was too big! And loud! And scary! So she just had to go home. And that one day soon her son (apparently told her) that he was going to go home too haha…. No. They added a few more security measures and have returned to some semblance of normal. I feel awful for my friend and her husband, because there is this part of me that worries that this woman will never leave them alone until she’s dead or in jail. Hopefully her sister can do a better job of keeping her in their state. JOOJEH KABOB (GRILLED SAFFRON CHICKEN) • 4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves • 1 small onion, peeled and sliced • ⅓ cup fresh lemon juice • ⅛ tsp ground saffron powder • ¼ tsp salt • ¼ tsp ground black pepper • ¼ cup olive oil FOR THE GRILLED VEGETABLES: • Small tomatoes (whole) • Small onions cut in half • Sweet colorful mini peppers (whole) • Serrano peppers (optional) • Olive oil for brushing over the veggies • Sprinkle of salt and ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS Trim all the fat from chicken breasts and cut them into equal pieces (1 ½ - 2 inches) and place them in a medium glass container. Add the sliced onions, saffron, salt, black pepper and lemon juice to the chicken and toss until the chicken pieces are uniformly coated with saffron and yellow. Add the olive oil to the dish and stir to combine. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate 24-48 hours. Leave the marinated chicken out at room temperature for about 45 minutes before grilling. Prepare the outdoor grill for high heat because this Chicken Kabob needs to cook fast otherwise it will dry out. If using coals, they should be burned until they are covered with a white ash before grilling. The grill grates should be 4-5 inches above the heat source. Use narrow metal skewers to skewer the Chicken Kabobs. Skewer the tomatoes, onions and peppers separately because these vegetables do not cook at the same time. Spray or brush the skewered vegetables with a light coating of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper before grilling them. Place two metal bars (I purchased mine from hardware store) at top and bottom of the grill grate and rest the tip and handle of the skewers on the bars so the chicken and vegetables don't touch the grates. If there is not enough space on the grill for all the skewers, grill the vegetables first and keep them warm until you grill the chicken. Grill the Jujeh Kabob over high heat. As soon as one side starts changing color the other sides should be grilled so the hot fire seals in the juices. Then keep turning the skewers until golden brown on all sides and no longer pink inside. Check one piece of the Jujeh kabob by cutting through it with a knife, if it is white and juicy it is ready. Remove the kabobs that are ready from fire and keep them warm under aluminum foil and serve as soon as all are done grilling. Enjoy the Chicken Kabobs and grilled vegetables over Sangak (Persian flat bread) or Persian rice. If you are serving the chicken kabobs with white rice, add a dab of softened butter on top and toss gently with a fork to coat the warm rice, and sprinkle it with sumac for the traditional style. Serve the kabobs with extra lemon/lime wedges with a few wedges of fresh white or red onions. TIFU by being too nice and nearly dying
This happened today in New Zealand. I walked home after 1 am, drunk from a night out (an unsafe FU in itself) and upon arrival realised I had no house key. Not wanting to bother my flatmates by waking them up (in a classic too-nice-kiwi move of feeling apologetic simply for existing) my lizard brain decided to wait out the night in our backyard instead (a major FU, it’s winter in New Zealand). We have a creepy empty dusty shed that we never go inside so I thought this sensible. After 10 mins my phone died (so no light). After 2 hours I realised I might die of hypothermia so decided I should go back to the front of the house and bang down the door to wake the flatties. That’s when I realised I also padlocked myself into the backyard and couldn’t see the lock code dial to free myself again (major FU - now no choice but to wait it out til daylight). I Bear Gryllsed up and found a hose for water and a bag of soil for a pillow. After many (many) hours of shifting from sitting in a plastic outdoor chair, to sprawling up a set of tiny concrete steps, to lying on a patch of (wet) fake grass/turf, to huddling next to a brick wall for shelter, to lying in the foetal position on broken wooden slats - all while it rained and flooded, and all in and out of (slight) consciousness - after 7 am, it finally became light enough to see the padlock code, let myself out of the yard and bang down the front door to be rescued. My lowest point was when I found a spade, dug a hole, and shat in my own backyard. At least my apologetic drunk brain shat away from the crops and politely returned the spade afterwards. My flatmates are horrified that I didn’t just wake them in the first place, they would never have minded if I did. I might be lucky to be alive and well (albeit a fuckwit). Worst of all, this afternoon we found my key on the ground right outside the front door, under a container of melted ice cream (that I brought back from town, fuck knows why). Turns out I had it all along! TL;DR drunk me locked myself outside overnight in the harsh NZ winter and shat in my own backyard... but turns out had my house key all along. submitted by /u/apologetic-kiwi to r/tifu [link] [comments]

Updated my patio pillows with a yard of outdoor fabric ($12) and 7/32 cotton rope ($4) for the “piping” technique. I did sew this up but as someone who has never made an item I was fairly surprised with how great they turned out!

The Long Game
I’ve named this tale The Long Game, since it actually spans over the course of several years leading to the satisfying conclusion. Also, because its a long story. I’ll understand if you skip this one for a shorter one. Several years ago I was in desperate need of a job. I was recently released from active duty in the US Army under a medical discharge, met my girlfriend (who is currently my wife) who moved in with me with her two small children from a previous marriage, and I was bouncing around from dead end job to dead end job. I had very little real world skills to offer to employers so my options were limited. I took a chance and interviewed with a small security company and was immediately hired. They liked that I was prior service, grilled me with questions only a veteran would know, and sent me to work on their biggest contract. I was on a site of a massive multi-million dollar construction location. A large named oil company was building a new headquarters and well... massive construction project just doesn’t seem like a big enough description. As security, a bulk of our responsibility was checking and vetting all construction workers and contractors through the gate, inspect vehicles for possible stolen property, and generally serve as a deterring force. To put it simply, everyday my gate alone would process about 1-2 thousand cars during my 8 hour shift. The site was running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to meet the very tight construction schedule. I was only on one of 3 gates so thats about 3-6 thousand cars that came on site every day in an 8 hour period. Massive construction site. (As a side note that will become very important later in the story, each car that came through had to undergo a strict inspection when the driver is FIRST assigned to work on the site. Then the vehicle gets a sticker and is allowed to drive onto the construction site. We would ensure the car has the sticker, and then just process everyones badge through a verification machine. If all badges passed, and the car had a sticker, then we would let the contractors on site so they can get to work.) Working there was great. All the security were ex-military so, beyond a little teasing about who they served with, everyone bonded really well. We didn’t have sick days or vacations days, so when people would call off for personal reasons or illness, everyone happily chipped in to make up the lost hours. And, because of this teamwork, our big boss overlooked the call offs and let us make overtime money. No write ups, no punishments. Sometimes we were working 16 hour shifts back to back. I spent many nights sleeping in the parking garage in between shifts because it was easier than driving home, to sleep a few hours, only to come back to work for another 16 hour day. We were in outdoor conditions in all weather, and were on our feet on concrete the entire time. Sitting down was a luxury that we rarely saw. We couldn’t leave the gate for any reason unless we were relieved by a supervisor who would try to come by twice during an 8 hour shift to let you go to the port-o-potty or quickly eat your lunch. Rain, harsh summer heat, bug storms (yes thats a thing), hail... you were out by your gate with no protection other than a construction hard hat. I know these sound like horrendous conditions but really, it was the best job I ever had. Because of the conditions it was no wonder that 95% of the employees were male. We tried hiring females but most would last a few days before quitting. Those people who did not quit in a few days were lifers and loved the job. The problems began about 3 months into the job. One of the supervisors was quitting to go back to school so a position opened up. Everyone was given an opportunity to apply for the supervisor position. I was encouraged by the night shift supervisor (who was the one quitting) to go for the promotion because he thought I would be a good replacement for him, even though I was the newest officer on the site and had the least amount of experience. So, I threw in my hat just for laughs. Two other people applied. One was a guy who had obvious seniority. The other was a girl (one of three on the site) who had been there for about a year. We were given a face to face interview with the boss. We’ll call him Jim. My interview went well and Jim liked that I was ambitious. Jim was also the guy who accepted me onto the site in the first place. The next phase of testing was a practice run as a temporary supervisor. We were each given a day to be the supervisor in charge. Jim was there, along with a junior Supervisor named... Ray, yeah, thats a good name for him. (For clarification, Ray did not want the promotion and was happy performing his regular duties) both were present just incase situations occurred that was beyond our ability to handle they were standing by to assist. My test day went well. I finished all tasks assigned to me and I even managed to handle a minor emergency on my own. The other two applicants apparently didn’t do to well... The senior guy kept forgetting his list of tasks he was given to accomplish and kept going back to the office to ask Jim what he should do next. The Girl did ok, but every time she would check up on the guards she would flaunt around her temporary rank, make employees call her “ma’am”, and bragging about how she was definitely going to be getting the promotion. Imagine her shock when I was given the position as the new night shift supervisor. To say she was angry was an understatement. Apparently she was so upset that she didn’t get the promotion that she called me on my personal cell phone. She stole my number from the supervisor emergency phone. To add to the situation, I had not yet been informed I got the promotion. Nothing official had been put out just yet. Not a direct quote but paraphrasing as best as I can: Me: hello? Girl: How does it feel? Me: um... who’s this? Girl: what? You don’t know? I thought supervisors are supposed to know EVERYTHING! Me: (very confused) You called OP, I think you may have the wrong number. Girl: I know who I called! Don’t pretend like you don’t know. You got the promotion because you’re all sexists pigs! Me: I got the promotion? Cool! Girl: That promotion was supposed to be mine but I guess since Im not in the bro-club they just gave it to you. If you don’t resign the position to me I’m going to tell HR about all this sexism and you’ll all be fired! Me: What sexism? I got the position by passing the tests. Isn’t it sexist to assume you should get the promotion only because you happen to be born a female? Isn’t that act alone sexist? Girl: But only men get promoted to leadership positions!!! Me: 95% of the site is male! Odds are males are going to get promoted. Sorry you didn’t make the cut but none of this is my problem. So I hung up the phone and called both Jim and Ray to inform them about the call. I was assured that I was promoted, they didn’t know how she found out, and they were going to file harassment on my behalf to HR for her stealing my phone number from the work phone and contacting me with threats. And thats where the story SHOULD end. But oh no fellow readers... it has only just begun. Now would be a good time to get some popcorn and a drink. So about two to three months roll by and I’m getting into the role of Supervisor. Girl, has since been removed from the site, and the employees are really happy that Im the new supervisor and that Girl is gone. Things continue as normal and I begin bonding with my staff. I especially bond with a guard that no one liked. His name for this story is Victor. Victor is a marine veteran, he was in the initial invasion of Iraq and developed severe PTSD. It makes him very confrontational, argumentative, and a super big A-hole to anyone who talks to him. I liked the guy from the get go and we quickly became close friends. Every night I would hang out with him between my duties and we would talk. I eventually convinced him to seek help from the Veterans Association, and go to PTSD counseling. He was also going to school to get his Masters degree (Thanks to Ray who convinced him to not give up on his education) and would just need to vent sometimes. I was that vent. He would blow up at me, yell and scream, and when he was done we would hug it out. It was therapy for him and I didn’t mind. All seemed to be going well until one day I came to visit with Victor. What I didn’t know was that Victor was pulling a 16 hour shift and actually worked the afternoon and the night shift. So when I showed up to work he had already been there a majority of the day. He asked me if I spoke with Jim recently. I hadn’t. Apparently Jim didn’t show up to work today. A few days go by and well... Jim mysteriously disappeared. After 3 or 4 days of his disappearance, Ray called an emergency meeting with the supervisors. In attendance was myself, Ray, and another supervisor from the second shift who is not important and does not require a fictional name. The meeting was to try and figure out what happened to Jim. We pooled our knowledge together and decided the best course of action was to contact the main headquarters branch to see if they knew something. He wasn’t answering the phone when we called him so we feared he was in the hospital and no one bothered to tell us. When we called we were given the run around, but eventually an HR rep who was friends with Ray spilled the beans. Jim had quit the job. Girl (from earlier) apparently made good on her threats. After she was kicked out of the site, she got ahold of a lawyer and began the process of suing the company. Not only for sexism and favoritism, but also sexual harassment. As it turned out, Jim was a lonely man. Girl and Jim began flirting and eventually sexting... and the idiot used the company supervisor cell phone to do it. She not only had copies of the messages, but when the company dug into the phone records they had all the evidence needed to see she was not lying. There were pictures... lots of pictures. Girl was brilliant. Evil, but brilliant. She knew that the old supervisor was going to go back to school eventually so she began flirting with Jim. She pursued him. Each conversation in person she would be flirtatious, rubbing him and even having sex with him. On the phone, however, she played coy and made him take charge. In the end, the evidence looked like he pressured her to have sex with him... and promised a promotion (in a bout of pillow talk and before anyone knew that the position was going to be open) to her in exchange for sex acts. At the time it was role play, but now it appears like this was all part of her insurance plan to get promoted for real. That was more than enough for the company to do something. When Jim caught wind what was happening he took off. This left us without a boss, and worse, in order to avoid a lawsuit, the company rehired Girl to her old position, replanted her on our site, paid her enough money to cover her missed salary plus a bonus and a raise, and promised to get more females on the site and on supervisor positions. This was enough to satisfy Girl so she dropped the lawsuit. As the only form of authority on the site, we three supervisors took it upon ourselves to run the site as best as we could until a new boss was assigned to help us or one of us was promoted to the position. Almost two months went by and Girl was a huge nuisance. She was constantly calling off her shift at the last minute and since everyone didn’t like her, no one was willing to cover her shift. We attempted to write her up for the situation but she quickly threw it back in our face and threaten to call her lawyer for harassment. After all, “none of the male employees get written up when they call off... obviously this is sexism and boys club all over again.” She pushed her luck too far one day, however, and severely disrespected one of the oil company representatives during his visit. He had her permanently removed from the site. When the security company tried to take her side (for fear of another lawsuit) he said either Girl is gone or he’ll get another security company to take over the contract. The company gave in and moved her to another site. But even though Girl was now out of our lives forever, the absolute nightmare she started was still forming overhead. The company finally found a suitable replacement for Jim, that was also female to satiate the terms set forth by Girls lawyer. Our new boss was named... well, i have lots of names for that sea hag but for now I’ll refer to her as Tasha. Tasha was a handful from the get go. As the new boss she was working on the site for nearly two weeks before she ever introduced herself to either the second shift supervisor or myself (i still worked nights). What boss does that? Two weeks before you introduce yourself to the supervisors? It took her another month to eventually meet all the guards. The site was busy but it wasn’t that big. Already she was off to a bad start. She was also non-military and didn’t seem respect the fact that every guard and supervisor was a military vet. Most of us served in war zones, lived in the dirt, and were very self sufficient. She saw everyone as a brainless meat head who needed CONSTANT supervision. The term micro-manager isn’t strong enough of a description to understand the level of hands on she needed to have. And it probably would have been much different if she was improving things, or making things more efficient... but she was barely able to perform the simplest tasks, made constant poor decisions, and just kinda ticked everyone off whenever she was around. We three supervisors tried to train her and bring her up to speed with the site but she wouldn’t hear any of our advice. After about another week or so from her introduction to everyone she began to get worse. We started seeing a ton of write ups flooding across our desks. Like, dozens and dozens for a single employee. And the write ups, while technically correct, were of the most petty things imaginable. Her favorite was writing up employees for breaking uniform regulations. You have a stray string on your uniform? Write up. Shoes dirty? Write up. A haircut she didn’t like? Write up. Glasses smudged? Write up. The best was her writing up a guard because his uniform was wet... because it was raining outside, and we were not allowed to seek shelter because of our duties. Every gate had a “guard shack” available. It was a small space with just enough room for a chair and a table to write on. It had a small A/C and a mini-fridge to keep water, Gatorades, and our lunch cold. But no one could use the guard shacks because they were so far away from the gates. Still within eyesight, but we had to physically badge in vehicles and employees and the verification machine was set up next to the gate. When you swipe a badge, a green or red light flashes and it makes a little beep sound to say wether or not someone is allowed on property. But if you’re in the guard shack you can’t physically hear the beep (reminder, this is a construction site) nor can you see the lights because the lights face the vehicle. So you have to stand there and swipe the badge and physically look at the lights to know wether or not to let anyone in. Also, remember the car stickers? They were positioned on the windshield so you can’t see them from a shack 30 feet away from the gate. And because of the massive volume of cars coming and going, there just wasn’t any time to walk to the guard shack, much less sit down. We tried to explain that to Tasha who just didn’t seem to care. It also became very clear that she was focusing on one guard at a time. Every write up and disciplinary meeting was laser focused on one individual. Eventually that person would get so sick of the harassment that they would quit. As soon as they were gone she would focus on another guard. The entire site went from a dream job to the most hostile work environment i’ve ever bore witness too. I served 10 years in the Army and served three tours to Afghanistan. I served under some of the most idiotic leadership imaginable, people who only got promoted because they were in the army soooo long that eventually they would get promotions. Ask a Veteran, they’ll understand what I mean. And all that time, all those dead end jobs with king of the tiny pond managers i used to work for, were NOTHING in comparison to Tasha. After two months under her reign 12 employees quit... including Ray. Yes, apparently supervisors were also under fire. I feel that I’m obligated at this point to mention that Ray is the best damn leader I’ve ever had the luxury of working with. Even though he was technically under me, he was and is the most professional man I have ever known. Period. Everyone on site respected him, everyone would have followed him to Hell and back, everyone loved Ray. Even when I was promoted above him, instead of being petty he encouraged me to do better. He trained me and became a role model to myself and many others on the site. Including Victor. Remember him from earlier? The PTSD guy that no one liked. Apparently he had two friends in this world. Me and Ray. And now Ray was bullied out of his job. Protip: Never fuck with a Marine. Especially one who has nothing left to lose. To put into context how bad this really is, no one quit the company before Tasha took over. Some people left to better opportunities, or were new hires who couldn’t hack it, but overall people had worked on that site since construction began 5 years prior. Some people had been with the company going on 10 years. These were the people she was going after and who she forced to quit. I had quit smoking for three years and things got so bad everyone started smoking again, even myself. You would think with as many people quitting that we would have a worker shortage but then you would be mistaken. As soon as someone quit, the next day the position was filled again. But 2nd shift supervisor and myself quickly learned that these people were not ex-military. These people were moody, had very bad attitudes with other guards and the many contractors we were dealing with on a daily basis. They were lazy, would often hide in the guard shacks and would not verify wether or not cars could enter the site. They were messy (both in personality and their surroundings) and generally what one would consider horrible employees. We called Ray to see if he could contact his HR buddy to find out where these people were coming from. And here is where the story gets even worse... Remember when old boss Jim took off? Well, someone had to take the fall for the sexism lawsuit that was forming. So the company terminated another employee. That employee was responsible for staffing the oil company contract. He was also responsible for hiring veterans and verifying them. Remember the questions I was asked at the beginning of this story that only a veteran would know the answers to. Yep, that guy. He was gone. So unfortunately no more veterans were selected from the hiring pool and sent our way. He was terminated because he originally hired Jim. As it turned out, Tasha (the new terror boss) was actually in charge of an office building contract in another part of the city. She lost the contract to that building and herself and all her guards were now in limbo and out of a job. Some of the guards were issued to new contracts but pay in security is usually pretty lousy. Normally about minimum wage. But our job paid very well. $15 an hour to start off because the company was supposed to offer it only to ex-military guards due to the site contract. I discovered years later that Tasha actually lost the building contract not because the contract ended naturally, but because she and her guards were useless that the building hired other people to do their jobs. The person in charge of contracts... was sleeping with Tasha. They covered up the contract loss so she can still have a job. Oh, and since military guy got fired during the lawsuit... Tasha’s fuck buddy took over his responsibilities. Hence, Tasha got another site contract, a pay raise, and was selected only because she was female and sleeping with the contract guy. Hows that for ironic sexism? And... it gets better... and the write ups and harassment on our site were a ruse to get the Veterans to quit their jobs, forcing the company to fill the spot with whoever was available due to a loophole clause in the oil company contract. It basically allowed the security company to staff open positions with non-military employees in an emergency employee shortage incident. And guess who the new lazy employees were? Yep, the old guards that served under Tasha, who were so bad at their job that they lost their own contract. But why them? Because they were requested, by name, by the largest contract supervisor Tasha. One by one I watched my fellow veterans and employees fall under attack and quit, only to be replaced by useless people and backstabbing thugs. I really could go on, there is a TON that happened during that time period, but its well past the time for some Malicious Compliance. I was the next to be targeted... and I was the next to quit. The malicious compliance, unfortunately was not caused by myself initially. But, by Victor who now watched his second and only friend quit from the job site. Victor is my god damn hero. After I left I started working for another security company. Ironically, the guy who hired me was Jim. My direct supervisor? Ray!!! We three were back together again and worked for another oil/gas company. The pay was awesome and info was shared about Jim getting set up for the fall and what not. We tried to get Victor to quit his job and join us at the new company... but the old marine was on one last mission. Remember those car stickers? Well, as it turned out, Victor had a super power. For whatever reason, he was able to spot forged stickers from across the gate. Ok, so forged stickers? Yep, they were a problem. The construction site had very limited parking and safety regulations were put in place that only licensed drivers could come onsite. The cars also had to pass crazy tests in order to meet the safety regulation compliance. The problem is that construction companies and sub-contractors often hire illegal workers, or people with criminal history, or people who just have crapy cars that probably aren’t registered or even inspected by the state. No one really cared, but without licensing they could not drive onsite. So, someone began forging car stickers and selling them to all the people who would not legally be able to get them. At first they were crude, obviously crayon on tape. If you glanced at it, it was passable but any close inspection would reveal that the sticker was fake. If a fake sticker was found, regulation stated that the car must be pulled over, and a security supervisor would need to be contacted. The security supervisor would have to get ahold of the site foreman, a supervisor from the fake sticker driver, and a police officer who would remove the sticker and permanently remove the employee from the site forever. Now, because all the replacement guards were really bad at their jobs, the fake sticker business was in full swing. They were getting better, laser printed on vinyl, and nearly indistinguishable from the real stickers. But Victor was now on a mission. He took a position at the main entry gate and began pulling over as many cars as he could with the fake stickers. He pulled over sooo many that a security supervisor (Tasha) was assigned to be nearby at all times. The site had to hire an additional police officer and the Site Forman had a permanent representative at the gate... Everyday Victor was pulling over car after car. He started training some of the least useless guards how to do it and what to look for. It became a HUGE nuisance for Tasha but she technically couldn’t do anything about it because he was following the site rules to the letter. After a month of aggressive crackdown on the fake sticker problem, the Oil company representatives held a special meeting with Tasha and Victor to plead with him to stop. He had singlehandedly removed so many construction workers and contractors that many companies were pulling their long term contracts with the oil company. Construction came to a sudden halt, and the oil company was hemorrhaging tons of money to either keep on contractors or find new ones willing to pick up the job where others left off. Best of all, the construction should have been WAY ahead of schedule so the Oil Company sold their old headquarters to someone else in the expectation to move into the newly constructed headquarters. However, incompetent security replacements were not checking vehicles exiting the properly and thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of tools and construction supplies were stolen, causing massive set backs. Then, the sticker fiasco cause any progress that was still going on to come to a sudden halt. The Oil Company now had to pay and greatly inflated rent at their old headquarters because the building was sold but they had nowhere to send the employees!!! So the new owners let them stay and jacked up the rent so high that it was causing the oil company to lose massive revenue and stocks were beginning to drop. During the meeting Victor only asked one question, “So, are you changing the regulation to state that illegal drivers are now allowed onsite?” Of course they didn’t change it. They couldn’t and Victor knew it. The meeting came to a close. Victor returned to his gate and continued his mission. After a few days, an accident occurred onsite. The blame was the drivers, but the buck was passed to Victor who became the fall guy and he was terminated from the security company. Everyone knew it was Bullshit and that he was obviously the scapegoat... but Victor didn’t care. He waged his war, and in my eyes, he won. So thats the end of the Malicious Compliance and if you made it this far then good on you. I hope you enjoyed this slice of my life and I leave you with a wish: I hope the best of your past is worst of your future. If you’re still here then you’ll be pleased to know there is a little justice in the world. Victor left security permanently. He finished school with honors and got his Masters degree. He also took my advice and sought help for his PTSD. He ended up getting 90% disability from the VA and gets a fat check every month. He technically does not have to work anymore but took a job as a maintenance supervisor at the local city college. He is doing much better mentally and is looking forward to buying his second home. We still talk regularly and is considered a very close friend of mine. Jim, Ray and I worked together for years at another security company. Jim left that company for better pay at a different security company and has only spoken to me once since his departure. From what I hear, he got married and is doing well. Ray took over as a contract manager for an even different security company much closer to his residence. He is still happily married and adopted his two nephews to raise along side of his son. We still talk semi regularly and go drinking at least once a year with Victor. I became a big time security supervisor at the company and have only recently left due to political conflict. I now am an HVAC technician and me and the wife are doing well. And what of Tasha? Well... she was eventually fired for the hell she caused. It took years to unravel the drama but eventually karma caught up to her. Jim called me once (after he left to work somewhere else) and warned me that Tasha was looking for a job in a new security company. He just denied her application when he realized who she was based on the stories Ray and I told him. She then interviewed for the position at my company. Guess who did all employee hiring? This guy! I had another officer send her into my office. She walked in all dressed up, smiling and ready to do her interview... then she saw me. Her smile faded and she walked out without ever saying anything. I then made a call to Ray and gave him a heads up that she was out there. Several weeks go by and she walked in to interview with Ray. He told me that when she saw him she broke down crying. She confessed that since she was terminated she has been unable to find a job. Everyone who interviews her just so happens to be an ex-military veteran who used to work on an oil company construction site. She was losing her home, her husband left her and took her kids (he found out about the contract guy she was sleeping with), she was living out of her car... she pleaded him for a job. And Ray, the most professional man I had ever met, was an ex-marine. He knew what happened to Victor, about how she threw him under a bus. He told her to beat sand, and to tell Satan “hi” for him when she goes to hell. Protip: Never mess with a Marine. —————— Edit for added info and concerns: Firstly, thank you all for the overwhelming response. I figured my story would be overlooked and possibly read by a handful of people. I never would have imagined I would get this kind of response. Thank you all for the awards, the updoots, and the kind words. It really means a lot to me and yes, I read them all. Wish I could respond to everyone but I can only say “thank you” so many times before it loses its sincerity. But thank you to everyone. Also, I will pass on your good wishes to Ray and Victor the next time I talk to them. Secondly, few commentators correctly noted that this story is very one sided and sexist against the female employees. I’m just popping this here to address their concern on a few points: 1) The female character named Girl should have a real name and not just labeled as a gender. You’re right. Didn’t even think about it while I was writing this and frankly I don’t care enough about her to justify giving her an identification. If this upsets you then I understand and accept your criticism without any negativity on my end. 2) This is a boys club, all females in the story are depicted as evil or were oppressed, ect... the story most certainly had that vibe and really that wasn’t my intention. Consider it a big oversight on my part. The whole story is incredibly long and there were so many people involved that if I got detailed it would be like a marvel movie. In fact the persons Girl and Tasha were the only females on the site that were a problem and were not liked. We had other female officers on site that were well respected and were treated just as equally as everyone else. One female in particular tried to be a huge help to us and she was one of the replacements. She was an ex-police officer from Chicago who helped us legally build a case of workplace harassment and even coached us on how to lead the investigation. The case was ignored and nothing productive came of it. Its a story all on its own so I excluded it due to length. 3) Jim was not a victim. You are correct. What he did is idiotic and an abuse of power. I will not argue with you there. However, note that I don’t talk to Jim anymore. There are reasons for that and the fact that his loins caused numerous people grief and sorrow is a big factor. What he did was reprehensible. However, Girl using the sexual relationship to push her own agenda also negates her being able to claim victimhood. If she was a victim, she should have sued instead of going right back to a company that allowed this to happen. At least, thats my opinion which really means nothing. 4) If this story offends you then too bad. Hate to be the jerk but I can’t change events that happened in real life to suite your political correctness. Things happened, and as the world crumbles around you sometimes the moral compass get spun. It’s not an excuse, just a very sad fact of life that is highlighted when you are trying to claw your way out of a shitty situation. Either way, thank you for everything and I’m greatly humbled by you all. submitted by /u/Noodle013 to r/MaliciousCompliance [link] [comments]
