My apartment building has shared laundry in the basement. Its coin op and theres only one washer and one dryer (there are only 10 units in the building but still). I always dreaded doing laundry. Its such a pain to have to get quarters, go down to the basement, and have to wait if one of my neighbors is already using the machines. I finally just went for it and bought a portable washing machine that I can hook up to my kitchen sink. It was about $240, which felt like a lot, but thats also how much I would spend in a year of using the coin op machines. Laundry is so much less of a chore now that I can just do it in my apartment. I set up a clothesline to dry everything and I've been surprised by how fast stuff dries on the line (dry air in the winter is probably helping) Im honestly annoyed i didnt do this years ago. If youve been debating getting one I highly recommended. I live in an apartment complex with shared laundry and it's been driving me insane. There's one washer and dryer for like 10 units and someone is always using it. I'd have to plan my entire weekend around doing laundry which felt ridiculous. I finally gave up and bought a mini washing machine that hooks up to my kitchen sink. I was skeptical it would actually work well but honestly it's been so much better than I expected. It's small so I can only do like one outfit at a time basically, but for everyday stuff like underwear, shirts, and workout clothes it's perfect. I still use the shared machines for bigger items like sheets and towels but now I'm not fighting over the washer just to clean a few t-shirts. My only regret is not doing this sooner. I spent way too long researching options before buying and somehow ended up on Amazon and Alibaba at one point during my search. Eventually I just grabbed one from a local appliance store that had decent reviews and it's held up well for the past few months. Just came back from doing laundry. Been going to same place since 2020. A washing cycle was $4.75 then, drying was $0.75. They just raised the price again, so now washing is $7.25, drying is $1.50. I think I'm okay with using them for actual loads, but I've been looking at these smaller machines for my wash clothes and shower curtain. Just me in a studio apartment. No washer hookups. Laundromat every week is getting old. Saw this Giantex portable washing machine for $124 and honestly tempted. Buyhatke chrome extension shows it was $111 a few months ago so not the best price but also I'm tired of dragging my laundry down the street every week lol. My landlord is very hands off and recently hired property management, which has been nothing but a nightmare. They suck. They came to check the smoke detectors today and I got this message 30 mins after they left from the property manager (not the owner, she’s alright and pretty fair so I’ll call her in the morning to explain the situation) Anyway, he wants me to get rid of my washing machine and now has decided my countertop dishwasher I bought with MY MONEY is considered an upgrade and now belongs to the unit. I am so confused right now because when I went to talk to the on site manager about my mom's lease and renewal, they went over the fact that you can't do laundry AT ALL inside your unit. Examples, not hand washing, nothing. They said its because it uses too much water. And if we wanted to wash our clothes then we needed to do it in the complex's dedicated washing room which uses money. But almost every other neighbor I know in my complex has one of those really big washing machines. One of my neighbors even brought me in to show me their set up. They literally just hooked it up on the wall in the kitchen, right when you walk in. There's no way you can miss it. So I am so confused as to how this works. Maybe I'm just spoiled by my previous setup, but I get the most crippling anxiety going down there, and it was starting to affect my laundry habits. I'm also cheap, and the idea of spending about $4-$5 in an quarters per load just annoyed me. Also, I can't find any damn quarters anywhere! Usually I'd just go to my parents' house on a weekend and do wash my clothes there like I did in college, but due to COVID, I'm trying to keep my elderly grandmothers safe and healthy by social distancing, so that's no go. After a couple weeks of hand washing and researching (plus re-reading my lease), I learned about portable washing machines and realized how perfectly this would fit in my bathroom and in my closet if I needed to hide it. I found this one on OfferUp for brand new for $100, but offered the seller 65 just to start haggling. But she accepted! Picked it up yesterday and have already done 5-6 loads. I don't pay for water, so besides the little electricity used (I'll check my bill to confirm), I'm basically washing my clothes for free. Edit to add: Just answering some questions people are asking so you don't have to scroll through comments to find them... •I use about a tablespoon of detergent, MAYBE 1.5. People already use way more than necessary in full sized machines. Don't do that here, it will take more water to rinse all the suds. •I hang dry everything. I'm about to invest in a bigger clothes rack from IKEA because I'm washing everything I can find and they're almost fully dry in 3 hours. I haven't washed bath towels yet, but I know they won't be "fresh from the dryer" fluffy after hanging. I don't care though lol •I watched a ton of Youtube reviews on how people used them, so I suggest you do the same to see what size is right for you. Mine is the 18 lb. capacity version (11 lbs of washing, 7 lbs of spinning). You may need bigger or smaller. Edit: 4/7/2021-I've since gotten a portable dryer off Craigslist (Magic Chef brand) and I officially never have to leave the house to do laundry! The washer spinner already gets rid of so much water, it only takes maybe a half hour on warm to get my load fully dry. This might be a little long. I ordered it on Amazon, one of those smaller, almost portable washers and dryers for apartments and stuff like that. I got it SPECIFICALLY to not have to use their washer and give them no rights over my cleaning habits. (I have rats and "rat laundry" as we call it has to be washed quite frequently and they don't like that.) So I respect their choice. I buy my own little washer (and detergent) by myself and when it gets here, I want to set it up and run a load. They tell me I won't do it, that I CAN'T do it because I don't have many skills admittedly because they kind of made me reliant on them for my entire childhood. I did not do things on my own, and I was frequently told I was incapable. And you wanna know what? Even AFTER I went through the effort to buy everything on my own, and try to set it up without any help at all, they STILL bitched at me. Saying I'd get electrocuted, that I'd flood the house, that I was incapable of doing an everyday thing like washing clothes on my own. That I was being ridiculous. Cussed out and yelled at at the top of his lungs. So I sent a text to my NDad: "Dad. I paid for it with my own money. It is mine. I was setting it up MYSELF. I did it SPECIFICALLY to not bother either of you. So there is absolutely no reason you should yell at me or tell me I cannot do something that I earned MYSELF. I didn't ask for any favors from y'all, just to be left in peace. If you don't like it, then don't help me. I'm not asking you to. But let me be and treat me with respect. But I'm doing it because you have no right to tell me otherwise." And so I went in the other room and got my new washer, being yelled at the entire time. In fact I was crying. But I plugged it in, and yeah I wasn't perfect or anything, it took me a while to entirely figure out, but I DID it. I do not always need help. I am a capable human being! My laundry was perfectly cleaned, rinsed, and dried afterwards and my ratties seemed very happy with the result. I am a person and I can decide to do things on my own. In this case I earned all the items I was using so it was entirely of my doing that it got done. It was something they couldn't control and tried to anyway. So you know what? Fuck that attitude. I can do whatever I set my mind to, even if I am bitched at the entire time. I ran some laundry with my own washer yesterday and I feel triumphant. They were irritated with me afterwards because they didn't WANT me to be able to do it but I did. It felt like a huge victory and I went to bed with a smile on my face that night.
