So I recently acquired a Marmot Helium sleeping bag for $85 second hand and am curious what benefits I can expect over my cheaper synthetic fill sleeping bag. Reading some reviews, I'm happy I didn't have to spend $500 on the bag, but are there any valid concerns one could have with it outside of the price tag or mainly just preferences and nitpicks? The synthetic bag I have is definitely heavier, haven't weighed it and boasts 0°F however I doubt that. The first 8 chapters are basically the tutorial for the tutorial. Controls are fine too. You just need like 25 hours of uninterrupted play before your brain adjusts and you stop fighting for your life every time you move. Just skip sleep, lock your wife out the room, cancel life for a day, and lock in. Totally worth it. Once the stockholm syndrome kicks in it feels pretty smooth actually. Inventory is not even a real issue either. Just do all the side quests, find about 427 vendors, unlock bags, grind about 92 factions, and progress the story enough to finally carry more than 4 rocks and a dead squirrel. Very simple. I really don’t get why people are acting like managing 9 different systems just to hold basic loot is bad design. Combat is also amazing once you stop expecting your inputs to matter right away. You people are too spoiled by responsive games. Crimson Desert respects your time by making every action feel like a long-term commitment. Every swing has weight because it feels like your character is making a serious life decision before doing it. Total immersion. The mount system is actually amazing too. I really do not understand the complaints. They show you bears, wolves, dragons, wyverns and all this other cool shit, and then the game teaches you a very important lesson about expectations by letting you keep a horse. That is called depth. And the quests are extremely well designed. I love talking to 17 NPCs, running across the whole map, forgetting why I was there, getting attacked by random shit on the way, then coming back for half an apple as a reward. Not even bitten. That is called progression. Sorry you need jingling keys every 8 seconds to stay engaged. Also the performance complaints are exaggerated. Yeah maybe it stutters a bit, maybe sometimes the camera fights you, maybe sometimes the game forgets what it is doing, but you guys are so obsessed with having a stable framerate for some reason. Finally, if you filter out the reviews below 300 hours, the game is basically a masterpiece at a whopping 99.7% positive. Best game of the century bro just trust. People just don’t have patience anymore. They want story, good controls, good performance, clear progression, and basic quality of life right away. For a while I was going wild camping maybe 10 times a year, but haven't been in over a year being busy with work etc. Most of the time I'm camping in woodlands so just bring a tarp and I've got a warm woolly blanket that does the job, but looking to do a bit more hiking this year so looking to buy a sleeping bag that's a bit more lightweight. Does anyone have experience with this sleeping bag? I see many reviews of iceflame quilts and flame 5f sleeping bags but can't find any reviews about the core sleeping bag. Full box construction with 880g 850fp rds moscovy down in size large for 283,53€ (including vat and free delivery) seems attractive. I currently have a large thermarest boost 650 20F/-6C but bellow 0C I'm freezing my butt when sleeping on my side. The down distribution seems designed for users sleeping on their bag. The expansion zip + arm zippers is quite nice in temps above 5-10C but I believe these zippers also introduce cold spots and unnecessary weight/bulk. I usually hike with my dog. So I also have to carry his sleeping bag and food. So minimal weight and volume is critical. So I want an affordable long but compact sleeping bag (I'm 187cm) that is a bit warmer, lighter and with ethical sourced down with 50/50 front/back distribution... I know affordable, warm and light is hard to find but iceflame core seem to offer what I'm looking for. The core features adjustable down distribution. I'm wondering if this will be a huge annoyance? I'm hoping upgrading from 800fp to 850fp and ordering +100g overfill will stop, or at least mitigate, unwanted down shifts while I'm sleeping. Hi all! I’m currently shopping for a sleeping bag so that I can go on my first backpacking trip. After looking through various different bags, i’ve found one that seems like a great fit for me at an enticing price point as well. The only problem is, the size that I figure I would need is sold out. I’m about 5’10 and was wondering if getting the long option that fits up to 6’6 would be a mistake? I assume that extra room probably means inefficient heat distribution, but also would allow me extra room to move around in my bag more. I would love to do my first trip over spring break, so in approximately 3 weeks, thus I need to get the rest of the gear I need fairly quickly, but I also don’t want to impulsively buy an item now and regret it later. I'm trying to find a good quality sleeping bag, quilt, or combination that will keep me cozy and comfortable in an unheated cabin/lean-to for about a week at a time. I already have a 4.3R rectangular self-inflating pad from Sea to Summit, which will be placed on simple wooden "bunks" in unheated but enclosed cabin or lean-to structures like you see at some summer camps. Weight isnt a concern, as i'm setting up once per location, but lower bulk is nice to minimize the number of setup hikes from the cars. I'm looking for a setup that will be good for 4 seasons in most of the continental US, so about 0F at coldest. Ideally, whatever i'm using as a sleeping bag in the cold weather could be unzipped and used as a blanket in warmer weather. Also looking for some durability; sometimes people place tools etc. on the bunks, and i don't want someone to sit on a screwdriver and tear a hole in my brand new $200 sleeping quilt. I had considered an EE Revolution Apex 20 plus a cheapo sleeping bag to layer together, but the durability concern of the fancy ultralight quilt fabric worries me a bit. Most of the advice and reviews i've found have been backpacking/ultralight focused, but I don't have the same weight focus for my use case. I'm also trying to avoid simply going to an outdoor store and getting whatever looks decent, as I've had too many cheap, drafty-zipper, impossibly-small-stuff-sack sleeping bag experiences. Looking for quality, comfort, and durability primarily, cost is secondary, bulk/weight tertiary. I love wool and recently got the Rewilder wool sleeping bag from Lucky Sheep. It is pretty much the only wool sleeping bag option for backpacking on the market. I now have spent five nights in it across three trips in the last month. I've never written a product review and I don't like how gear conversations dominate the backpacking culture, but this product is unique and met my expectations. Seeing that no one has written a review of it, I thought I should do it. I have no affiliation with the Lucky Sheep and I am not paid to write this review (no one is rich enough to make me write a paid review, though I am open to offers). Rewilder is made in the USA (North Carolina) with US wool. Lucky Sheep is a small workshop producing unique, all natural hiking/camping products. The Rewilder comes in different sizes; I got the long and wide one (I am 6' 3", 190 lbs) and it fits me very well. It is rated at 20 F and I comfortably cowboy camped in it in the 30s (see the crappy pictures I shot), so I would say the temperature rating is accurate. The long/wide one is 5 lbs, which is about 2-2.5 lbs heavier than synthetic/down 20 F sleeping bags. Wool doesn't compress like down, so the packed up bag is bulkier than comparable synthetic bags (see the pic). If you haven't quit reading after seeing the "5 lbs", you might be asking, "why the hell are you happy about it then?" Well, I slept in this thing like I've never slept in my decades of camping. -The outer surface of the bag is waxed cotton (I believe 10oz). The guy who designed the bag, Patrick, is obsessed with using natural materials, so the wax is a combination of beeswax, linseed oil, and pine resin I believe. This helps with not soaking in dew if you are sleeping out in the open. Though, of course waxed cotton is just water resistant, not water proof. Cotton canvas still breathes, and it does so very well I must say. -On the middle layer, you have a thick layer of wool insulation and on the inside, it is merino wool lining. It feels fantastic to get inside the sleeping bag, especially with all wool clothing. Wool breathes and doesn't get soggy. I feel the cold first on my feet usually, especially when sleeping without a tent, and combined with the diy three layer loose wool sleeping socks I made (last pic), my feet were completely warm and dry throughout the night. - I love that you can use this bag both as a quilt and a sleeping bag; when you open the zipper it completely opens and functions as a quilt. As the night gets colder, you can zip up to preserve heat. The area around the zipper is uninsulated and you are supposed to rotate the bag and put that area under you. The bag doesn't have a hood, it just has a flap to cover your head, if needed. I think this is a good design decision and works with the quilt/bag design. -The feet part is open but can be tightened, which leaves only a very small opening and a little flap in the bag blocks that opening. I was suspicious of this design, but it works, given how warm my feet were. Finally, I loved that the bag was sent just in a cardboard box, no plastic bags or packaging. Here are the cons and features that can be improved: - It is obviously heavier and bulkier than synthetic/down bags, but there is nothing to improve here, since this is how wool is. It takes up quite a bit of space in my backpack, but I am still able to fit in everything I need, in my Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 40-60 L bag. I am not a thruhiker, but if I were to do a multi week/month trip in winter conditions, I would still take this thing with me. An extra 2(.5) pounds (would be less for shorter/narrower models) is worth the wonderful sleep it provides, not to mention the environmental impact. When my days are over, they can bury me in this thing and we would compost together, except for the zipper, which might confuse future archaeologists. - The zipper can only be opened/closed from the inside, which can be improved by using a slider that can be used both from inside and outside. I thought I should write at least three cons to prove that I am objective, but I couldn't find a third one. I simply love this thing. Oh, Lucky Sheep is terrible at marketing. The website has some inconsistent information on the sizing (inaccurate feet-cm conversions, which I msged Patrick about). It is also pricey (around $550). I now think it is worth every penny and I will probably be using it until I die, but I had doubts before purchasing it. It is risky to buy something that almost no one has ever reviewed online. I searched for more info, but couldn't find anything except for Patrick's videos on youtube. If they were more cunning (and I like that they are not), they would ship this thing for free to all the youtuber backpacking characters reviewing products. Granted, given the misguided extreme emphasis on lightness and volume, they probably would have given it bad reviews, but who knows? I am also very bad at marketing. I am looking to buy myself a winter sleeping bag. I mostly be backpack in the Olympic mountains. I expect temperatures around 15°F. FYI, I am 5'6'' 145lbs and a tossing and turning side sleeper. Peter is home and fast asleep. He was very excited to see me and seems like his normal self, so that's good. Karen did not bring him out to me. She sent her daughter. No words were exchanged except they forgot what bed was his, so she brought two out. I grabbed his, and left. Thank you to everyone for the kind words and advice. I appreciate it. I want to answer a few questions people asked in previous posts and try to clarify a few things. First, Peter is a bugger. I'll be the first to admit it. But I am also very honest with all his pet sitters. I've been using Rover for Peter since he was six months old and he has had two regular sitters. The first one, a dog trainer and sitter, never had a complaint. She provided him a lot of structure and play time and he did very well there. He was always welcomed back. Unfortunately, she suddenly passed away. He next sitters, his current ones, have said that he is a handful, but the only complaints they have had are - he chewed an insole of a shoe - and he snuck some food off of the coffee table. They have been his sitters for about a year. He's been there four or five times - probably totaling about 40 nights (one stay was for 21 days). Unfortunately, they are traveling over the holidays. I picked Karen for several reasons. Peter is used to me being at home (I work from home), Karen is retired. Her profile states that she only leaves the house for mass and funerals (I know, random). When she does leave, her adult daughter watches the dogs. So the dogs are always supervised. That was a big plus for me. Peter would be with someone during his entire stay. She has about 230 reviews, 4.9 star rating and has been pet sitting for 40 years. 12 of those have been with Rover. At the M&G, Karen asked a lot of questions and took notes. I felt good about that. I told her Peter was a grazer, no problem. I told her he jumps on furniture, no problem. We talked about where he would sleep. She said most of the dogs sleep in her room, in her bed. I raised some concerns because Peter does not like to be moved when he's sleeping and if he's in a bed with multiple dogs, that might be a problem. If it was going to be a problem, he could be kenneled (all his other sitters kennel him, he is not kenneled at home). I also said that if she needed a kennel I would have to go and pick it up at his regular sitters because that's where I keep it. She said not to worry about it. She would let him sleep in her room the first night, and if it was a problem, she would kennel him in Sirius' kennel (her daughter's dog). I said that was fine. I would never ever tell a sitter Peter could be left alone, especially for 8-10 hours. He still chews (mostly shoes, socks, toys, etc.. NEVER furniture), which is listed in his profile and I mentioned it in the M&G. I would be more surprised if he didn't chew something being left alone than not chewing something. I do, however, don't think he chewed the couch. I think he probably jumped up there to sleep, and did that digging, turning, digging, turning thing to get comfy (he does that at home) and while doing that, he ripped the couch. Not that it's an excuse, but that couch was already on its last leg. Bottom line, he should not have been downstair, left alone, uncrated for 8 hours. Anyway, I travel a lot, so I need a sitter for Peter (our other dog Woody usually stays with family). I will still use Rover, but I will find someone who can come to the house and stay with both the boys. Thanks everyone and thanks for helping me through this. It was very stressful for me, but in the grand scheme of things, nothing extremely horrible happened. I'm just glad Peter "Tweeter" is okay. I love that little bugger. She assured me that was okay and the dogs were fed separately. However, during the sit, she allowed Peter access to another dog’s food. This is unacceptable. Peter is only 22 lbs. What if the other dog was food aggressive?! Peter could have been seriously hurt. The next day she told me “Eating was not a problem. I was feeding the dogs separately all day yesterday. That took longer, but it worked out very good.” Yes, that’s what you should have done the first day. Complaint #2: First night, “Peter started barking at 4:30 am”, which in turned caused all the other dogs in her care to start barking too. “Kaitlin and I weren’t able to get him to stop even though we yelled no. So, I got up at 5 am to be with half the dogs.” She also mentioned “she did her best to sleep without my c-pap machine. My cellphone was still upstairs.” So a dog who has never been to your house started barking when left alone downstairs with a bunch of strange dogs. That to me seems like normal, albeit annoying, behavior. Instead of reaching out to me and asking if there was anything she could do to reduce his stress, she and her daughter just yelled at him. Complaint #3: “He kept jumping up on my chair but used my chest to springboard to the stop of the headrest.” He definitely did this. He does like to sleep on the back of the couch or chair and occasionally he will jump on people to get there. Mary knew he would get on the furniture, but it is my fault for not mentioning he might jump on her to get to ‘his spot’. I will add it to his profile and mention it in future M&Gs. I will also work with him at home. I am sorry Peter hurt her. Complaint #4: “Peter started barking at 8 am.” “We go to bed at 12:30 am. We get up at 10 am.” Again he caused a chain reaction with all the dogs that were sleeping in her room and the dogs downstairs with Peter. Again, a dog waking up at 8 am is not a nuisance, it’s normal. However, Mary expected Peter to be on her schedule . She expected him to wait ten hours before barking and asking to go potty. Complaint #5: During the night, Peter ripped a hole in her leather couch. She then informed me that “Our profile states you have to provide your own crate for your dog. I hate to do it, but I guess I will put Peter in Sirius’s large crate.” She also asked me to pay her $20 for the patch she had to buy to fix the hole. Did Peter do this? Maybe. Maybe another dog did. He wasn’t the only dog down there. If he did, I’m guessing he ripped it while digging into the couch while trying to get comfortable. Not an excuse, but he didn’t maliciously destroy her furniture. Let me also state that during the M&G, Mary told me the dogs slept in her room, in her bed. I raised some concerns and said if that didn’t work out, Peter would need to be kenneled. I also told her that I would need to pick up his kennel from his regular sitters. Mary said that wasn’t necessary. She would try her room the first night and if it didn’t work, she would put him in Sirius’ crate. She offered Sirius’ crate, but seemed very annoyed when she actually needed to use it for the remaining two nights. I also told her at the M&G Peter could not be left alone unsupervised and uncrated. Never, ever would I say Peter could have free roam, unsupervised, while his sitters slept upstairs. His Rover profile also states that he must be kenneled if unsupervised and it was also listed on the instructions I sent with him. Yet she still left him alone, with other dogs he did not know, all night long. Complaint #6: Peter “…also chewed up about 6 stuffed dog toys, but no charge. I have him a substitute hard dog bone to chew on.” Really? Peter, a rat terrier, ripped up some dog toys that you had out for the dogs to play with? This is the craziest non-complaint complaint I have ever heard. Summary Mary is not equipped or trained to watch any dog that does not follow her schedule. She does not follow the instructions that were talked about during the M&G, that are listed in the pet’s Rover profile, or listed on the instructions sent with the dog. Peter is a rat terrier who is high energy and needs structure and supervision. I assumed with Mary’s 40 years of experience this would not be a problem. She didn’t even give him his daily meds, which again, I mentioned at the M&G, listed it in his profile, and wrote it down on the instructions I sent. When I unpacked his to go bag, his pills had been untouched. He went three days without her administering a single pill. This is quite concerning. All her feedback was about everything Peter was doing wrong with the exception of the first message which said he was having a great day. Everything else that followed sounded like she was doing me a favor by watching him and the whole time she was put out. She only sent three pictures on the third day. One of Peter at the back door wanting in the house, one of a chewed up dog toy, and one of the rip in the couch. Needless to say I was very stressed about the care Peter was receiving. I was out of the country and cut my holiday travels short so I could picked up Peter two days early. Mary did not bring him out to discuss any of this. Instead she sent her daughter. Side note: I have been using Rover for three years. No other sitter has complained about Peter. Probably because they provided the appropriate care he needed and followed the instructions I sent. Edit - thank you for all your replies I’ve been able to purchase a bag I think suits me best, I appreciate all the help you’ve given me! - Ive been looking round for a sleeping bag that can keep me warm in -10/15C as I’m a very cold sleeper and have been looking to do some winter camps at relatively high elevations, I found nortents lyng -20C which have incredible reviews from people using them and while heavy I wouldn’t mind the extra weight for the warmth. I have also looked at mountain equipment down bags which have varied reviews about them as I’ve seen many people say their temperature ratings are less than accurate. I haven’t a massive budget at most I’d like to spend £600 as the Nortent bag is that after duties and taxes unfortunately. I’m only working 0 hour so don’t have a great income. Has anyone had experience with or can recommend OLIF (BCB) sleeping bags? I'm in the market for a secound hand or budget (£50 - £70) first hand sleeping bag 0 degrees comfort rating under 1.5kg. I'd like it to be lighter but I think that asking too much for the budget. Came across OLIF on ebay, it's an EN Rated bag with 0 Comfort , -7 Limit , -Extreme -27 1.6kg 70D Nylon Synthetic A close alternative would be the OEX 400 Fanthom which is lighter but I'v read some reviews that suggest the build quality isn't so good. I bought a sleeping bag for my first (supported) bike packing trip in the REI Labor Day Sale and it arrived last night. After looking at reviews, videos, specs for hours and hours I chose one balancing price, weight, temp ratings, features, reviews and went with the Nemo Disco Women’s 30 regular (https://www.nemoequipment.com/products/disco-womens-endless-promise-down-sleeping-bag). I got it last night and got into it and immediately got the vibe it wasn’t The One. I think I should have gotten a bag with better size inclusivity like the REI Magma or Thermarest Boost which both offer a short wide size. It wasn’t uncomfortable but I’m an active sleeper and am not sure how it would feel if I was layered up. My interests/goals don’t involve any cold weather camping but I live in the northeast so I have been looking at 3 season bags. I’m interesting in backpacking and bikepacking. I’m 5’4, size 16/18/20 depending on brand with wide shoulders and hips, think Eastern European peasant genes. Any advice on ways to figure out if my initial feelings have substance? Hi! 👋🏼 I’m new in the whole backpacking ultralight world but I am already super stoked and have 2 trips coming up. I already invested in some gear that I thought would help me in the long run. Including a Big Agnes copper spur tent(after reading many reviews and guides) and a sea to summit EtherLight XR Insulated mat(again after reading many reviews) But after testing it out the in 14 celcius night some things became clear. The mat was not insulated enough since I could feel the cold earth when my butt hit the ground through the mat. The sleeping bag I used was a cheap one since I wasn’t sure that it would need a big spending splurge. Boy was I wrong. I WAS SO COLD! I had on almost two layers mainly just cotton but a top layer of wool as well as wooly socks. So my question(if you have read this far, thank you so much!) is! Which sleeping bag should I buy, when I am so cold on only a 14 degree night? I will be hiking in weather between 30 - -10 degrees. I read that many recommend to buy different sleeping bags for the weather and since I already have a crappy cheap one that will probably work if I am around the 30-18 degrees I really want one for the 18 - -10 degrees if that makes sense? While my current trips don’t necessarily call for ultra light, my plan is for that. And since good gear ultra light or not is expensive I’d rather buy the ultralight to be ready for most anything even if the materials might be a bit more fragile. Hello! Me and a few friends are doing our first backpacking trip in mid August. We are doing Jackson Hole, rendezvous mountain to string lake. None of us have done a backpacking trip before and don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on all of the gear. I’ve used ChatGPT for various recommendations and reviews on each of the items seem good enough. But, figured this thread might be more valuable as everyone has real experience with the items they suggest. For a budget tent, pack, and sleeping bag what would you recommend? The attached screenshot is a shopping cart I’m considering purchasing however from what I can tell all of these items seem to be on the heavier side. I’m not majorly concerned about some extra weight, I’m fairly athletic. But, I may be underestimating what the added weight will do on a trip like this. This guest has stayed in our guest house for one month and has been nothing but cordial and respectful. He was supposed to check out today, and after hours of both myself and Airbnb trying to contact him, we got finally bagged up his stuff and removed it from the unit so that we could clean for a guest arriving tomorrow. I got a strange feeling about the situation, so I looked up our county's arrest records and discovered that he was arrested for assault with bodily harm last night!! What do I put in his review? This was literally our very first guest on Airbnb, and I was hoping for a great review from him, but now I am at a loss for how to review him! He was a good guest, but getting arrested the day before check out and having to bag up his belongings has tainted the experience, obviously. What would you write?? UPDATE: I followed the general consensus here and left a positive review about his stay up until check-out. He sent a message at 1am today apologizing and saying that he was "hospitalized" the night before and unable to charge his phone. He came over this afternoon and we gave him his things and some ice packs to keep his medication cold, and then he asked if we would refund him for the last night of his reservation since he didn't sleep in the unit 😂 Can't make this shit up.
