I (F30) own a synthetic sleeping bag rated for 0°C / 32°F comfort bought two years ago. It fits me perfectly from head to toes, with no empty space inside. I’ve slept in it several times from 1°C to 10°C (34°F to 50°F), and I always end up getting really cold, waking me up several times. It sucks because it causes me a lack of energy and ruins a lot of my hikes. I can't walk long hikes because of that. I tend to sweat a lot sometimes, which can make me feel colder because I get wet. My sleeping pad is the Sea to Summit Insulated Ultra Light with an R-value of 3.1. My tent is a Nature Hike Cloud 1. Before going to sleep, I eat a big meal, drunk a cup of tea, and do a few exercises to warm myself up before getting into my sleeping bag. Despite that, I wake up several times freezing and shaking like a leaf, trying to put myself. I often end up putting on my gloves and even considered putting my hardshell on. I’ve tried sleeping with proper sleep synthetic clothes, naked, half naked, with a buff on my head, etc., but it always ends the same way. At this point, I honestly can’t tell whether I’m actually getting too warm at first and sweating, which make me freezing afterward or if I’m just a very cold sleeper. I know that the recommended comfort temperatures aren't always suitable for women and are often calculated based on the average man; maybe that's the reason of my problem. I'd like to buy a down sleeping bag to reduce the weight but not knowing why I get that cold stops me to buy one for now since I want to fix that issue first. Do you guys have any tips to help me ? im pretty upset right now. went to pull out my backpacking gear to start airing things out for spring and found that mice had chewed a hole through the stuff sack on my REI half dome tent and nested INSIDE my sleeping bag. a $300 sleeping bag with mouse piss and nesting material in the insulation the gear was stored in my garage on shelving units. i always figured keeping it off the ground was enough but apparently not. also found droppings inside my cook kit and gnaw marks on the handle of my trekking pole. basically nothing was safe i know hard sided containers are the answer long term but i cant fit a 2 person tent and sleeping bags in plastic bins. at least not without compressing the insulation which you're not supposed to do how are you guys storing gear over winter? there has to be a middle ground between "shove it in the garage and pray" and building a climate controlled gear room which id love but cant afford submitted by /u/whatever_blag to r/CampingGear [link] [comments]

TL;DR at the end This happened about 9 years or so ago but effects me to this day. Back story to paint a better picture. I never met my biological father. He was killed by his girlfriends son and then his ex wife reached out to my mom so I could meet my sister, and after this, the rest of my dads side of the family reached out to meet me. My dads side of the family does an annual camping trip on one of their properties by a creek. I went a couple times and it was nice meeting this new side of the family. The last time I went I was more comfortable around them and over 21 so they offered me drinks and I took them. I was drunk or buzzing all day, which led me to making some questionable decisions. The most obnoxious was probably me deciding to go skinny dipping in the creek that night that my fathers ashes were poured into earlier on that day. Anyways after everyone went to bed, my (I think 16 at the time) cousin and her friend were scared about some sounds they heard outside their tent. I went alone that year and was awake, so I said they could sleep in my tent if they were scared. My plan was to have them go to my tent, then I’d just sleep outside my tent on my blanket wrapped in a Sleeping bag. I was pretty drunk at the time so what ended up happening was I offered my tent, they said ok, walked over and by time they crawled in I was passed out. I woke up the next morning against the tent wall, one leg on my air mattress, the other off. I saw two others sleeping in my tent and then remembered offering them my tent. My cousin and her friend woke up after me and crawled out of the tent. I then crawled out after and realized some of the other family members were staring at me. Mouth open. It was then I realized my fuck up. All they say was two underage girls crawling out of my tent, who to them, was a stranger. Someone they just met. The looks they were giving made me feel disgusting. Other than what it looked like, all that happened was I offered my younger relative and her friend a place to sleep to feel more comfortable. I can’t imagine what the rest of the family thought but i know it couldn’t have been good because they stopped inviting me to those trips after that. TL;DR Passed out after offering my tent to my underage cousin and her friend because they said they were scared. Throwaway because family knows my main. Okay, here goes. This pissed me off to no end but I think mostly because it was unexpected. I think if they'd just been honest there wouldn't have been a problem. So I was planning on going home to see my family for a bit. My parents moved recently into a smaller place so no longer live in the family home, and there's nowhere for me to stay. My brother also recently moved and I had yet to see his new place, which he said was massive. He's got two kids so I assumed as much. He offers to let me stay with him rather than getting a hotel. Obviously, money is money so I eagerly accepted his offer. He specifically said he had a spare bed. You can probably see where this is going bearing in mind the title of this post. I get to his house, ask where I should dump my bag, and he shows me to the bed. The bed is actually an airbed, which is outside, in the back garden, inside a flimsy fucking tent. There is a single pillow and a sleeping bag. I mean jesus. So I laughed, I thought it was a prank and felt completely played. Fair enough, I thought. Just another in a long and storied tale of brothers getting one over on each other. Not something we have done much in our family, but to be fair after the initial surprise I ended up thinking it was quite funny. I did try and sleep outside but found it kinda rough, so I ended up coming back inside in the middle of the night and sleeping on the sofa. I should say that he left the backdoor unlocked for me so I could use the kitchen, the bathroom, etc. Anyway. Next morning I wake up and he tells me I've got to go. As in, leave the house altogether. It's like 7am. Turns out his wife has completely freaked out because I'm sleeping on the sofa. It's a brand new sofa and people can't sleep on it?? As if that's a thing. The next day my mother tells me my brother was seriously offended that I didn't sleep in the tent, talked about all the effort he'd put into it and how he'd been planning it for ages. On April 26, 1970, at approximately 7:30 AM, 11-year-old Terrence “Terry” Bowers was found deceased, suffering from multiple stab wounds, in his sleeping bag while on a Boy Scout’s camping trip in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The camping trip began on Friday, April 24, when Boy Scout Troop 275 traveled from Upper Darby to St. Basil the Great Church, East Pikeland Township, Chester County. Twenty three scouts and their six adult leaders set up camp on an open field near a creek about 200 yards from the church building, just beginning their much anticipated trip. After setting up the camp site, the scouts spent their day engaging in typical Boy Scout activities. Nobody noticed anything strange about any of the children’s behavior, including Terrence. The children rolled out their sleeping bags and went to sleep in a circular fashion around the campfire. Tents were pitched, but some scouts only slept in their tents if they had gotten cold from sleeping outside. It wasn’t until the early hours of the morning when fellow scouts discovered Terrence, motionless in his green sleeping bag, surrounded by a pool of his own blood. The medical examiner determined that Terrence was likely murdered just an hour prior to his discovery, about 6:30 AM. Terrence suffered stab wounds to his back, right arm, and chest. There was no indication that Terrence had been sexually assaulted. The medical examiner believed that the knife used to murder Terrence was a small blade. Though twenty two other scouts and two adult leaders were only feet away from Terrence at the time of his murder, there were no witnesses. Nobody had even heard anything unusual. The investigation was hexed from the beginning. By the time the authorities arrived, Terrence’s body had been moved and parents were on the scene. In the days and weeks after the murder, hundreds of people in northern Chester County were questioned by a six-man police investigation team. Boy Scouts were hooked up to polygraph machines and had their knives confiscated for evidence. The murder weapon was never recovered, despite three searches with metal detectors. There were no witnesses, no suspects, no motive, and no murder weapon. Investigators were dumbfounded by the random and brutal attack. Just days after the murder occurred, investigators already found themselves facing a dead end. All scouts and leaders were questioned extensively. Their stories of their whereabouts at the time of the murder were all verified. Authorities investigated patients from the nearby mental facilities, Pennhurst State Hospital and Valley Forge Military Hospital, who were AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave) or out on passes. Each Sunday around sunrise, police set up a checkpoint near the church to ask drivers if they had seen anything unusual on the morning of the murder. Still, there were no viable suspects that could be linked to Terrence. The only leads investigators would have wouldn’t emerge until 1972 and 1983. In 1972, investigators questioned a man who had newspaper clippings about Terrence’s case in his apartment. In 1983, an inmate reportedly claimed to have information about the case. Unfortunately, both leads went nowhere. In a short amount of time, the case went cold. It wasn’t until 2012 that the freshest lead would emerge. In The Boy Scouts’ “perversion files,” records that name pedophiles and others that the Scouts want to keep out of the organization, there were documents that included letters a Boy Scout wrote in 1971 referring to Lawrence Wakely, a former Scout who is currently serving time at a state prison for rape. These records indicated that Wakely once admitted to stabbing Terrence in retaliation for being kicked out of the Scouts. The confession was never reported in the news at the time, but James Wenner, a state police investigator, said he had interviewed a man who fit Wakely’s description around the time of the murder. Wenner said that Wakely’s confession lacked details that only the murderer would know, and though its known to be inaccurate and oftentimes inadmissible in court, Wakely failed a polygraph test. Though Terrence’s father passed away of a heart attack at the 48 in 1978, Terrence’s mother and siblings still seek justice for their son and brother. Terrence’s family struggle to comprehend who could have murdered their loved one. Terrence’s brother, Chris, who has a tattoo of Terrence’s portrait on his bicep, speculated, "These are some of the biggest organizations in the world [Roman Catholic Church & Boy Scouts]. If they wanted to find out where a bunch of young boys were hanging out, they were privy to that information. If they wanted this thing shut down, they'd shut it down real fast. I think they did. But if this happened today, it would have been solved." Maureen, Terrence’s sister, suspects that someone from Troop 275 knows something. She said, “They were scared little boys then who are men now with children of their own. They might say, 'Yeah, I did hear something or see something.’ Anything is possible. I'd like to give my mother some closure in this lifetime. It haunts her every day.” Almost 50 years later, the murder of Terence Bowers remains unsolved.
