Hi all. We just purchased this home and are trying to figure out how to improve the kitchen layout without doing a complete gut remodel. Overall we like the look (the white trim + lighter floors are the current finishes. Note the darker trim photos are just to show additional angles of the kitchen). Functionally, it feels a bit small and awkward. Main issues: The fridge is placed in a way that makes the corner cabinet really hard to access. The double doors are currently the only pantry storage. Counter space is decent, but the layout feels inefficient. No integrated microwave or trash can. We’d love to add more cabinet storage if possible. We’re wondering: Should we move the sink under the window on the right? Ideally, we’d like to keep as many of the existing cabinets as possible. We’re considering turning the fridge/pantry wall into a full cabinet wall. However, there doesn’t seem to be enough space with the island in its current orientation. Would rotating the island 90 degrees make better use of the space? Or would that make traffic flow worse? We don’t want this to turn into a full-scale remodel, but we understand some reworking will be necessary. Would love layout suggestions, especially from anyone who has dealt with awkward fridge placement or limited pantry space. So I’m getting ready to start planning our kitchen remodel. A few owners ago the kitchen was “upgraded” and they added an island in our small kitchen. Kitchen is about 10’8” x 11’ 6” with a dining room of one side and opened to the living room. The island sits right on the divide from kitchen to living room and even has carpet going around a portion of of it. I’d like to turn the island into a peninsula kitchen, but that means giving up my tall pantry. I’ve seen a few pictures of a tall cabinet put on the corner of a peninsula kitchen and was wondering if that would work well because it’s over a longer countertop or would it make an awkward cabinet to get into. Any recommendations or ideas would be great! Took a long time, initially I was going to do everything by purchasing furniture but the layout of my apartment is kind of awkward and un-ideal. Only option was to do custom furniture to really maximize things. So had to learn basic woodworking and decided to build everything myself. I started off with basic equipment I bought myself at home depot, including a small job site table saw and 2x4s. Repurposed that walk in closet into a longer desk. Eventually had to get a membership at a local woodworking shop to build the kitchen island as that was a whole new thing and was way too complicated to do at home. Super long journey but overall so happy with how things turned out! I have seen videos of apartments in Tokyo with nonexistent kitchens and I UNDERSTAND! My place is perfect except for my ridiculous galley kitchen. I don't even have a full size fridge. There's two 6 inch wide counters, one of which is covered by my tiny dish rack, the other is the only space there is between the sink and the stove, so I try to leave it as open as I can for when I do cook and need space for accouterment. I have a small kitchen island in the living room I can clear and use as counter space, I also have a dining table. So while I have almost no room to cook, I have room to prep. But I hate making such a huge mess having to clean all those areas and then do a whole meal's worth of dishes (which will inevitably sit in the sink for a week). I HATE the kitchen!! I have major chronic pain, doing the dishes hurts! I try to have as few as possible. I miss my dishwasher. :( I don't know what I'm even doing with this post! I'm complaining for sure. I think I'm also looking for advice. I have so many things that would be so great to use if I had counter space and a dishwasher like a rice cooker, electric kettle (I haven't even made tea since I moved here last May cos I am just so frustrated by not having space), food processor ... ugh. We almost finished with our kitchen remodel (just need ceiling lights, under cabinet lights, and paint). Our previous kitchen was ridiculously small, with a tiny, useless island with zero storage. The only solution we could find to improve functionality and create storage was to design a large island. The pantry is next to the refrigerator, so our perimeter cabinet space is minimal. The new island definitely provides storage, but it looks huge to me. I’m very worried we made a mistake. Is it out of proportion to the room? Is it possible to modify (reduce the size) an island once it’s installed? We are putting in a large chandelier above it, as well as new rattan bar stools that will provide more contrast. My new kitchen is just over 3 metres wide so fairly narrow. It’s closed off from the rest of the house. For this space do you prefer the U shape design with a small seating peninsula or the L shape with an island? I like islands but feel like it could be too cramped so I’m thinking the U is better? Hi guys. My boyfriend and I are turning a space that was once a man cave into an in-law apartment. We have done all the work ourselves and we are working with what we have. Im aware it is unconventional, and the window is low, but it wasn’t in our budget to move it. I’m completely ok with our split kitchen. There was no way to make an “L” layout anyways because of how low the walls are on the left and right. The island is going to help bring it all together as well as give us more counter space. My question to you is: Is this island too small for our space? We plan to have an overhang large enough for stools on the opposite side than the window, as well as some on the left and right. But I’m wondering if we should have added another 15” cabinet to it (to make the island 75”) as the window is 74”. Would that be more astetically pleasing? Right now, the island only looks centered with the window if you stand in the dead center of the room. If we stand back and look from anywhere off centered, it looks as if the island is not centered. Bought the house 10 years ago because we loved the location and view but HATED the kitchen. Only one person fit in the kitchen at any given time and it was the Ikea idea house. Learned a lot in the process. Not sure I would do rift white oak cabinets again - or at least would spent a LOT more time making sure everything was correct so I didn’t have mismatched grain patterns all over. We went with GE Cafe appliances. I really like the look of them but 1) icemaker SUCKS which you think is no big deal until you have more than 2 guests over and have to run to the store for ice every time. 2) Matching the “bronze” handles was a challenge. Everyone’s version of bronze is different so trying to find a faucet with soap dispenser, garbage disposal button and hot water dispenser was rough. Thanks Waterstone but $$$&. For cabinet pulls we found Atlas Homewares Thin Square 7-9/16 Inch Center to Center Handle Cabinet Pull in “champagne” bronze which we love and fits well with the GE Cafe “bronze” handles. Has just enough of the red tint in it to make it more bronze than the bright gold options we kept running into during our search. We went with a longer island versus adding a dining area by the window (now glass door). Haven’t missed it. Bought a transformer table we use for holidays and gatherings and it works great. Removing the wall which had structural implications was hard but not as expensive as we were told by multiple contractors it would be. One contractor told us to “fall in love with the post” coming from the island as our only option. It cost us about $4k for an engineer and maybe $20k in framing and the beam to eliminate that dumb wall that caused the 1p kitchen design. We were made to feel crazy for wanting to put a beam in and eliminate the wall separating the living area and kitchen and it just took persistence and a great contractor to help us see the vision. Favorite things so far are the island double waterfall with calacatta miraggio gold engineered quartz countertops and the drawer fridge in the bar area (near sliding door for indoor/outdoor entertaining). We like the wood and white look but again not 100% excited about rift cut white oak cabinets. Another thing we really love unexpectedly is all drawers below compared to lower cabinets with doors. SO much more storage!! I wouldn’t do the 5 in one oven (GE Cafe) again. Just get a microwave. The amount of work to go through every time you want to use it as something other than a microwave (along with risks of accidentally leaving something metal in there before switching back) is not worth it. Just get a microwave. It will save you a lot of money and you have an oven you can use in convection to air fry (or get a countertop air fryer). We went through a lot on our 10’ island and the outlets because we wanted extra deep seating on the island so you didn’t hit your knees when you sat there. We ended up finding a way to build outlets on the inside of each side of the island that could pass our electrical inspection. We didn’t want a “pop up” on the island and had a really hard time figuring this out but ultimately built a small wood frame inside each side of the island on living room side in order to install outlets. Just got back from helping move furniture out and wanted to share with you guys. I work at a well known beach resort in Florida in a small kitchen open for the guests on the resort. Just in August, we opened a beautiful new fine dining seafood restaurant that cost whatever millions of amounts of dollars. It was supposed to be hurricane proof from what I’ve heard in the construction, but this is clearly not the case. The entire island the hotel is on was essentially underwater as well as the first floor of the hotel. Mud is everywhere. Lobby, the prep kitchen, my kitchen, the nightclub in the building, everything flooded. Even the stage where band plays is completely destroyed. Never seen anything like it since I’ve lived in Florida. Chef told us we won’t be back for another week minimum. hello! this is my parent's house — I'm in college so l live at home. I wouldn't describe them as hoarders but the rest of the house is as cluttered as this.😄 the kitchen in particular is so unwelcoming and I hate walking into it. I'd love any opinions that could help me make it look better or cleaner. I'm considering painting the cabinets because I can't rip them out (this is a condo). I'm going to clean it out today, but my parents refuse to clean it or let me make big changes, so l'd love to know if anyone has any opinions to make it more aesthetically pleasing by replacing/painting/ getting rid of things/rearranging kitchen I do want to eventually try to make a little island but I want to first make it at least somewhere I would feel comfortable in. Also note that the kitchen does not get a lot of sunlight during the day, and the wall next to it is the bathroom, so I can't make it more open. Please let me know!! Like that title said. Neighbors garbage disposal leaked, ruined my light. To buy a new one and have it installed is going to run me about $1200. My deductible is $1k. Her insurance claims they are not responsible. She has offered me $300, “as a neighbor” Should I just accept it? Or do I have a chance in small claims? I live in Rhode Island, in a mill condo building. If her insurance is determining that they aren’t liable will that be the case if I take her to small claims? (Well, it's 99% done, if anyone wants to cut some cabinet filler panels, hit me up) Edit: To all those saying "this is small???" this is a 10x13 kitchen with 10x10 of functional space. The other 3 feet are the path of travel from the door to other rooms. I guess 100 square feet is on the top end of "small" kitchens and the bottom of end of "medium" kitchens. It's definitely not large by any means. Timeline: 8 weeks (not including a month or two hiatus in the middle for the birth of our daughter!) Cost: about $20,000 Labor: $6k (demo, window installation & wall repair, electrical & plumbing) Appliances: $5.5k Countertop: $2.2k (incl. installation) Backsplash & Materials: $300 Cabinets: $3.4k Flooring: $400 Lighting: $600 Materials & Tools: ~$1.5k. Wood for shelves & trim, screws, circular saw, power drill, osc. multi-tool, random orbit sander, miter saw box, clamps, levels, pocket hole kit, angles/guides, sawhorses, wood glue & filler, caulk & sealant. I basically had nothing but a hammer and screwdriver. Story: We bought our first house in June, as we were expecting a baby in August and needed more space than our 1-bedroom apartment could offer. We started looking in March/April, but the market in our area was (and still is) crazy. We initially looked at houses that were fully done, but we lost a few bids since everything went way over asking. Since I'm in the architecture industry (but not much practical construction experience...) we decided to broaden our search and agreed the kitchen would be the best compromise. We found a small-ish Cape Cod style house in a good area that was perfect except for a dated and bare kitchen. We budgeted out a kitchen remodel and put in a bid for 9% over asking. There were 15 other offers and ours was only the 3rd highest, but we won because of the good terms, etc. Planning: From contract to closing, I made a lot of measurements and spreadsheets, and thoroughly researched all of products, down to what type of screws I would need. We chose IKEA for the cabinets, mainly due to cost (and their great kitchen sale events) and I made multiple designs using their excellent online planning tools. We ended up with a U-shape layout, as the kitchen was too small for an efficient L-shape layout and we couldn't fit an island or peninsula. We decided to remove the window on the back wall as it was too low to run counters under. To keep natural light and a view of the backyard (and to keep an eye on our future kids while preparing dinner) we added (2) new windows on either side. For the sake of time (and safety, I didn't want to injure myself in demo when I would be a dad soon) we opted to use a General Contractor for the demo and window construction, and for the electrical and plumbing. I was the project manager and coordinated everything. The DIY work included the cabinets, flooring, backsplash, shelves, and details. Design: I'm more of a modernist while my wife is into the farmhouse style, so we compromised. The left side would be more farmhouse-y and the right would be more modern. We're basic in that we love gray and white, subway tile, and clean lines. These decisions will also help resale value when we decide to sell later on. We initially ordered the IKEA LERHYTTAN Gray cabinets (shaker-style) but half the stuff was backordered and they ended up pulling the entire line for QC reasons. We had to return it and settle for our 2nd choice, BODBYN Gray. I heard the LERHYTTAN is coming back early 2019. Construction: Overall it went pretty smoothly, but lots of issues arose, as they always seem to. See photo descriptions for more info on tools and materials used. We closed on Wednesday and scheduled the contractors to start on Friday. They didn't actually start until Monday. Demo was done in a few days. The window took the longest, and wasn't done until one month later. This delayed our cabinet installation as we needed finished walls to hang the SEKTION rails. Electrical scope was small, just some GFCI outlets and a few hardwired power locations. The pendant above the sink used to be a hardwired flourescent tube with a pull-chain, and no hard switch. It was more cost-effective (and better for me since I'm making a Smart Home) to use Hue bulbs and a wireless dimmer switch instead of having the electrician wire up a new switch. Plumbing was relocating a gas line, moving a drain and h/c water lines, and adding a cold water line for the fridge. It was easier to run things up through the floor, but made it more challenging to get some of the appliances in properly.
